Kerry did well overall to get a draw vs Dublin today guys. Considering we were 7 points down just after half time. The 1st half was a lot closer than the scoreline showed, the advantage goal disallowed with the almost immediate Con goal was the reason for the 6 point gap... Defence were sloppy in the 1st half and I think without Ryan and O'Sullivan,.. we would have conceded at least 1 less goal if they were playing. Kerry showed they were well capable in the 2nd half and most of all showed they weren't psychologically fazed by Dublin and were also fitter in that 2nd half. Dublin had more of a full strength team than Kerry playing with Kerry missing 4/5 players of our potential 1st team. Against what most people are saying I think Kerry are in a great place, 4/5 last games vs Dublin unbeaten (3 Draws), even Mayo couldn't say that in their peak. So I reckon Kerry are starting, but maybe not 100% their yet, starting to get a physiological edge over Dublin. This year and the next definitely look promising as long as they play front foot, attacking, football.

kerry need to look at their defensive system as 4 goals too much to concede

far too much negativity here - great display overall and great come back - showed the team has balls.
yes there was a few mistakes at the back but the second half display would warm the heart of any kerry fan and well done to all for getting an unlikely draw from 7 points down.

Was initially disappointed yesterday but the more i think of of it I'm fairly happy a lot of positives in that performance. Clifford roasted Fitzsimons couldn't handle him at all. Diarmuid o connor gave the performance we have been waiting for from him that interception was perfect. We outscored them by 6 points in the second half and really got a run on them. People will say they took the foot off the gas etc. James mcarthy kilkenny etc dont do shadow boxing and the subs they brought in showed the mentality Cooper howard mcmahon. This was w massive result for us given where we were at halftime a lesser team wouldve collapsed and lost by ten. We didn't we bloody well refused to go away. A few obvious ones from yesterday we need more ballast at the back too many of our defenders yesterday are on the light side , I think now is the time for Sherwood at full back we really struggled with the strenght of o callaghan, Kilkenny and paddy small. Two of the older statesmen really struggled yesterday in Moran and geaney take note pk they will be fine against most teams but not dublin! For me the really pleasing thing is we played front foot football as much as we could the downside as we all know is the space left at the back but its a price we have to pay imo we scored 1-18 o-15 from play , thats the way we should play of course we need to tighten up massively at the back but Sherwood Ryan and Tom sull will make a difference onwards to the Hyde now!

Positivies: Diarmuid O'Connor David Clifford Comeback Dara Moynihan
Negatives: full back line (bar Foley) Defensive organistation Kieran Fitzgibbon Kick outs David Moran Paul Geaney
League is league but we can definitely take plenty from today. Some new leaders stood up and showed great reserve to come back.
I think we need Ryan back in goals asap but his kickouts are still slightly suspect as well. Need Tom O'Sullivan back but need to protect your goals better. Dublin waltzed through but we didn't really threaten Dublins goal despite our players having the measure of their men up front. They never let themselves be exposed

My Sunday afternoon was dominated by strange sounds, some more welcome than others. First , from Thurles, there these was the harsh, abrupt sound of balloons being burst. Then the gentler, far more pleasant sound of balloons being reinflated at the same location with the final sound , again at the same location, of boot and leather colliding. The latter sound I have been told, I was behind the sofa at that stage, being generated by the Fossa freak as he stretched a balloon to bursting capacity. At a more local level, there was the sound of ambulance sirens carting off old men to UHK who had keeled over at the sight of those demoralising television pictures depicting, how shall I say this, a goal epidemic at the aforementioned venue. One of my pesky daughters forced me to board an ambulance too but I insisted on disembarking at the Six Crosses, swearing that I, having advocated a similar attitude to our players , was going to die with my boots on, if death was to be my fate. Incidentally, I have it on good authority that all those old codgers survived , being resuscitated, by having blasted into their eardrums, news that the earthquake in Thurles was not as catastrophic as first thought . They were warned of course not to expose themselves to similar toxins in the future. I doubt if they and I will adhere to that advice.
We started off so well, going 0-4 to 0-1 up. Then Dublin fired the first cannon exposing a softness and a naivety in our backline which was to become, more or less, habitual in that opening half. It is no exaggeration to say that our back line was riddled. The disturbing feature of our defending charade was that our marking was done via remote control. We were standing yards off our opponents. Clearly this is intrinsically a schoolboy approach, one consequence of it is that it gives your opponent couple of chances to recover a ball which he may have mishandled. Whereas if the back is on the heels of the forward it allows him to get a hand or a boot in when that occasion arises. It was frustrating to watch Dublin players getting a couple of chances to control a ball they initially mishandled.
In spite of all the wobbles we kept plugging away and when Dara Moynihan, heroic all through, wriggled his way through for a fine "goal" it looked , groggy as we were, that we would survive the standing count. Bizarrely, the goal was disallowed due seemingly to an arcane rule which very likely the meaning and purpose of is not understood by our rule makers, certainly not understood by anybody else including hapless referees. In the fullness of time the mystery of said rule maybe published to coincide with the revelation of the final secret of Fatima. To compound our sorrow, shortly afterwards, Dublin added on a goal and a point and early in the second half a seven point lead was achieved by the Dubs. One would not give tuppence for our chances at that stage.
I did a bit of lip reading around that time, one of my many talents. The message rang out, "lads remember what Veteran advocated". One of the neophytes was a little confused , retorting what did that fossil say? " Let us die with our boots on". Clearly that was the battle cry. Where heretofore we were like little puppy dogs aimlessly and fruitlessly chasing shadows, now a collective edge developed. Players who up that stage were mere support actors now became giants. There was a noticeable tightening in our defence, Diarmuid O'Connor became a man at midfield , more about him later, while up front our forwards , threatening all through, began to give the shivers to the Dublin backs, led of course by David who went crazy for a period against possibly the best defender in the game, Mick Fitzimons. You all know the story finished.
There is no denying the poverty of our defending in that first half. Viewing it on television it was hard to see who was picking up who but most of our backs seemed to struggle in that period, even Paul Murphy. Paul had a very poor half , being very amatuerish for one of the Dublin goals. My goodness, typical of the man, he was a transformed player in the second half, cajoling his colleagues with a couple of uplifting points. A disquieting feature of that half was how Dublin were able to manufacture physical mismatches, a case in point being Brian against Ciaran Kilkenny. Ciaran is a magnificent player and if you want to curtail him you must at least match him physically. It was a hopeless cause for Brian and perhaps Gavin Crowley should have been detailed to mark the Dublin man. In any case , Brian is a natural halfback. Tadgh's positioning was poor on a couple of occasions and our new keeper, Kieran, even allowing for his inexperience, tended to commit too soon.
David Moran had an unhappy day. He did some good things but delivered a few poor kick passes and was dispossessed cheaply on one occasion. He of course is well off peak fitness yet. Diarmuid O'Connor? Nobody doubted this young man's ability. It was just a question of when it would manifest itself, even though it has been slower than some of us would have liked. My criticism of him has been is that there has not been enough anger, edge to is play. Yesterday was the first time I saw evidence that he may be adding those qualities to his arsenal. For example there was one occasion when two Dubs were about to collect, he swept in aggressively from their blind side and it was he rather than they came away with the ball. The result of this new found aggression was that he had his best game so far for Kerry. Welcome, angry Diarmuid!
Sean O'Shea started very strongly and finished very strongly. I am not sure what the logic is of playing Paul Geaney at wing forward. At his peak, Paul would not have had the pace or stamina for that role. Perhaps the reasoning is this. Paul is usually slow to start the year, taking a while to get into his stride. With such a short run in to the championship, perhaps management decided we will have to work Paul very hard early on to have him motoring for later, more serious business. There is no doubt Paul gave his all yesterday because when he was taken off the poor man could scarcely walk. Can you ask any more from a player, however unproductive his stint may have been. I will be surprised if Paul is not seriously contending for a place in his natural habitat, the full forward line before this year is done. That is where a predator needs to prowl.
I was again impressed by the work rate and gumption of Paudie Clifford. Another man who gave his last ounce.
Jack Sherwood , not surprisingly, looked very rusty when he came on. I hope he gets a full game against Roscommon. There was nothing rusty about Stephen O'Brien. Stephen is always prepared to die for the cause.
In spite of the first half bombardment, I still believe we are contenders. Serious contenders.
Dublin are such a good team , peppered with so many talented players. The other side of the coin is that without doubt they must be the most boring, top class team I have seen. This interminable holding of the ball is sleep inducing for the neutral and ,worse than that, a complete turn off. What neutral is going to pay to see that tactical blight when stadia are reopened for spectators. This nonsense reached a new low yesterday. They are in danger of having that as their legacy.
P.S. Brian got a yellow card in the second half as he tussled with Ciaran Kilkenny outside the end line while the ball went wide. Reason?
P.P.S. Paul Murphy had a free awarded against him in the first half when he shouldered a Dublin player over the side line. Reason?

I generally wouldn't comment on games I watch on TV as I find it very hard to figure out who is marking who, what shape the team are playing, whats going on off the ball and what-not.
There will be a lot of finger pointing over the defence for the goals conceded and rightly so. What I will say is Dublin being able to engineer a situation where Con O Callaghan is one v one against Paul Murphy at the edge of the square with 30 seconds to go in the half is criminal.
On a positive note I thought Diarmuid O Connor and Dara Moynihan had really good games in the middle third. To be able to do it against Dublin shows they have what it takes - no point doing it against Roscommon if you cant do it when it comes to the crunch. Paul Murphy after a torrid first half really drove on in the 2nd half.
The poor ref made a few confusing calls but could you blame him with all the tweaks to the rules he's trying to decipher while keeping up with a non-stop game.
On Dublin holding the ball - the only saving grace is that we were spared their supporters clapping (a la soccer fans) as a ball is kicked passed 30 years across their own 45 after 20 passes in a row.

Did anyone notice that de Dubs already actually played two challenge games and in the same hour?
Not that it will ever happen but what an advertisement for the split.
Good one there Vet, but how much of the loose marking was down to de Dubs playing musical chairs, moving lads around 'excessively', routinely, and bearing in mind we can only see what was on TV - maybe that was the plan and it is great to rub it in to the underdogs, that is until it isn't, i.e. that can only be done when you are on top anyway, there are better things to be doing and to me it signals an imminent downfall so keep it up there boyos in blue!
Overall it was still a great game with such masses of talent on show, could/should have been classier but we have had worse Sunday afternoons.

Backs were all over the shop in the first half . Our Backline has been an issue for a while now it’s not getting better Moran looks past it should have retired He might be good for 20 minutes from the bench but I don’t think he should start

Having watched the game again last night, I thought there was lots to take from it from a Kerry standpoint. 1 Some of our promising young players are really beginning to find their feet and we are now looking like a team with options around the middle. 2 The physical condition of the players is excellent. 3 When the engine rooms tired as the second half wore on and when the cavalry was brought on, our subs changed the game, the same can’t be said of Dublin. When was the last time that happened to Dublin? 4 Paul Mannion will be a huge loss to Dublin this year. 5 Peter Crowley should have the Kerry management breaking down his door begging him to come back. 6 When did Dublin last score 4 goals and still not win? 7 We have lots to work on and if we get that balance right offensively/defensively, we have a right chance this year. 8 David Clifford, wow. Can’t wait to go to a match and see him play in the flesh again. Really hope we get to go to games this year.

As a big fan of Moran over the years my hope is that it was just a very bad day out of the office, and perhaps there is a lot of heavy fitness work going on at the moment.
Half a dozen posters have said that David Moran might be an option off the bench, an impact player. I disagree that Moran is a good option as a sub. I want Moran on the pitch for the first 50 minutes but when things get frenetic near the end of the game is when he has not done his best work.
To my mind, like Peter O'Mahony for the Lions, David Moran either starts or is nowhere.
EDIT: I start him.

just on the topic of the full back line - it was Paul Murphy who slipped (or was he pushed) for the 3rd goal and it was DOC who gave away the peno. both were beaten to high balls into the square, not the full back line.
go 1 on 1 and you run these risks. ive no issue with it, those mistakes hopefully wont happen later in the year once lads are tuned in.

I would venture to say that most of our former great defenders would be shouting at their screens watching the present-day defending by our lads. The art of winning the ball cleanly in a ‘solid’ tackle with a player ending up on his backside is mainly a vision of the past.
Tackling as an art form much like a cat chasing a mouse – only the ‘pounce’ being made when you are pretty sure that you will win the ball. Otherwise, it’s a question of chasing down quickly, then stalking, then forcing the opponent (mouse) where you want him before finally pouncing to take the ball. But you can’t do any of that if you are standing off 5 or 6 yards. Otherwise, get your body goal-side and stay on your feet. A player half the weight of his opponent could come away successfully with the ball by executing the skill correctly. There are few things more revealing about a player than his prowess or paucity of defensive ability in one-on-one situations.
Backs are no longer just walls between the opponent and the goal. They are expected to be playmakers that are good attackers as well. All this is admirable but at the same time, a compromise on pure defensive ability is sometimes accepted if it is made up of by these other attributes. My perception now is that, in the main, the modern game ostensibly absolves the art of defending.

The running down the clock is, for me, the most depressing and energy sapping tactic the Dublin team use. Yesterday they got caught out doing it and it didn't work a win for them. I know Kerry did it last week for a brief spell but that game was over at half time. Dublin employ it EVERY game. I actually feel a lot better today than I did immediately after the game yesterday for a few reasons. 1. Kerry didn't lose 2. Dara Moynihan and Diarmuid O Connor. 3. Two Dublin Players were the difference and we have the plenty time and personnel to get that right. 4. I saw a team huddle after the game where Tommy Walsh seemed to do a lot of the talk. 5. Paul Murphy and Paul Geaney made it their business in the second half to make up for the first. 6. The"Let's run down the clock pass it around among ourselves" didn't work out for Dublin because of who they were playing.

Great game, great performance, great attitude. Eventually the nestlings from the 5 in a row are launching themselves off the cliffs. The mammy's boys faces are gone, replaced by chiseled jawlines but the biggest change by far is allowing them play on instinct. There were flashes of the seventies there from Seanie, Diarmuid and Stephen, not allowing the attack to die just because they were forced to ground by the swarm - but flicking the ball to a colleague thereby giving Kerry a second bite at the cherry and also, very importantly, not allowing Dublin build an attack. Ronan O'Gara would call it dealing with "unconstructed play" or "heads up football".
I thought Gavin White had a great game to such an extent that the problems on the left wing of defence are probably resolved. I have always been a fan of Diarmuid and have said on this forum that he can become a commanding midfielder. David C has become a real leader and kicked a few good ones with his right also. The game was calling out for Tommy Walsh at half time, the reason being that the Dublin defence had only one focus i.e. DC but with Tommy they had a second completely different problem. They failed to cope so Kerry outscored them by 7 pts between the 42nd minute and the 75th. Tommy gave the assist for the penalty too. Also it was reassuring that when the 2 experience players were replaced everything continued seamlessly. The ruling on the Moynihan goal was farcical. Because it was not "cynical" it was not a penalty, in other words it was "an ordinary decent foul".
The defensive problems are not as intractable as they may appear. Dublin players use short passing to drag defenders to 1 metre from the sideline. This leaves an empty zone between about 3 metres and 8 metres from the line and the ball is dumped in there, their players expect this and sprint on to it and immediately the goals are under assault. As the pass is not to a player it usually hops and this is perfect for O'Callaghan as he is already in burrowing mode when he gets the ball. There are a few ways to deal with this.
I think David Moran will start every game even if he only plays for 25 minutes. AIF's and semis can be very intimidating if there is a crowd, etc. etc. David is the current leader. he is the ideal man to steady the ship. Once the ball is thrown in it is just a game of football. The changes can be made then. It would be very unwise to make radical changes now.
I honestly don't think that Dublin can improve very much in the next couple of months. Even though McCarthy played o.k. there were times when his appetite for battle wasn't there but he forced himself to trudge up and down the pitch. Apart from the penalty they only scored 3 points in the second half which is very poor return. As others have said bringing on Philly and Jonny sends out a message too.

Moran is 33 not able to run for 50 minutes You start him and leave him in there the game could be over by the time you take him off At this stage you have to start Diarmuid O’Connor and Jack Barry Give them the league together and hopefully they will get better as a partnership as the year goes on Tom Sullivan will be a welcome addition in the backs meeting need to find 2 more backs O’Beaglaoich not good enough to start he pulls and drags too much gives away too many frees

In 2019 after we shipped 3 goals vs Cork in the Munster final we seemed to focus on the defence and conceded ONE goal ( VS Meath) from open play in the following 4 games vs Mayo, Donegal, Meath and Tyrone - five of the six starters yesterday were in that defensive unit, Tom O'Sullivan completing the sextet - we have defenders but they must concentrate on the job in hand - at one juncture yesterday as we brought the ball out of defence in the first half, Tadgh Morley must have run 50/60 metres in support of the ball carrier; later in the 2nd half we had Diarmuid O'Connor jumping in the square with O'Callaghan and not a defender in sight! When we took a quick free late in the game it was Jason Foley who popped in the opposition square - this is part of the problem and must be ironed out - if we can sort this a la 2019 we have a great chance against the Dubs.
Somebody earlier mentioned Peter Crowley should be on the managements contact list - my information is that Peter's inter county retirement was forced by his slow recovery from his ACL injury and he would not stand up to the rigours of inter county training - a pity as we could do with his experience/nous.

This might have been answered by someone else alreayd and sorry if it has. But what's the story with Eoghan O'Brien from Churchill? I would have thought he'd be an option as a backup keeper rather than going back to Brendan Kealy? btw i always felt Kealy should have been the number 1 for the last few years and was quite hard doen by but think it's a bit of a backward step. Other than O'Brien i would have thought there would have been other options.

Hard to know with goalies its a funny one often the 2nd best goalie in a county wont commit unless they think it's realistic to oust the incumbent or like cluxton are (surely) nearly finished. You never know who might refuse a call up etc.

What do people think is our best central defensive combination from Morley, Crowley and Sherwood? Crowley didn’t too much wrong yesterday but is Morley’s best position still centre back? Would Sherwood at full back be the best choice? Difficult decision but a crucial one.
Foley and White looked to have improved hugely which is a massive positive. Foley looks stronger, tighter and more assured one on one. White’s pace is such an asset, he has gotten stronger as well and looks better defensively. Hopefully they can keep it up.

To my mind, like Peter O'Mahony for the Lions, David Moran either starts or is nowhere. EDIT: I start him. Unfortunately I think it wasn't just one very bad day at the office, I think it might well have been his last day at the office. After watching the game yesterday, I thought it was stark how much the game passed Moran by. I watched the Galway game back specifically with an eye on how he performed and in the 40 minutes he was on the field in the Galway game his performance was very similar to the game yesterday i.e - not much above minimal on the offensive and defensive sides of things. Maybe he's not at full fitness or has been carrying a knock over the last two games but watching the two performances, it's very hard to avoid the conclusion that his race is run. He did have one or two nice kicks in the Galway game but what was notable was the amount of time and space Galway allowed him to do this - the difference between the Galway game and the Dublin game could be summed up by showing two kick-pass efforts by Moran in the two games - in the Galway game he got the ball in acres of space and had a nice kick-pass over the top into the chest of Dara Moynihan who went on a run and popped the reverse pass for Paudie's goal. Watching this the key standout was the time and space both Moran and Moynihan had to operate in - there was just no Galway player anywhere close to either of them. In the game yesterday he tried a couple of similar balls when he found space [nothing close to what he got in the Galway game] but the issue was the Dublin marking - there was one long kick he attempted that was completely the wrong option - it ended up being a ball where 3 Dublin balls were competing versus 1 Kerry player and no surprise Dublin got an easy possession. I would imagine that once things speed up a bit more come championship time he will struggle even more to get space to even attempt these kicks. By my count he caught one ball from a kickout in the 85 minutes [this was against Peter Cooke who was one of the first two Galway players subbed off around the 25 minute mark]. He did win a throw-ball in the Galway game. In terms of defensive work-rate there was a lot of shadowing of players with very little in the way of tackles or turn-overs. He had some nothing handpasses around the middle. He had a few long kick-pass attempts in both games - that mostly worked against Galway but didn't against Dublin. I would imagine his overall stats in terms of actual involvement in both the Galway and Dublin games were simply awful. David has given a lot to the Kerry cause but time waits for no man and I don't think he is a good option as any sort of tactical sub either playing just the first half of games or coming on late on. Both the Galway and Dublin performances were in the first half of games so I don't think telling him he is just getting one half of football and to empty the tank by half-time is likely to make any significant changes to his performance levels by itself. There might be a possibility of him being of use off the subs bench late on but his performance levels in the last two games compared to how other options have performed would have him down the pecking order for me, especially given the importance of getting game-time/experience into the other midfield options.
