I was at a game where numerous people went in over a wall and were unchallenged. I also heard from others who were at games that once all tickets had been scanned the officials left the gate and huge amounts of people streamed in fully aware they they would get in. Once inside the ground huge groups were not socially distancing. Other games were strictly policed.
In other instances people who were not involved in the GAA (but who support and donate to the organisation) passed pitches and witnessed far more than 200 inside. The County Board certainly didn’t cover themselves in glory in relation to such serious issues and hopefully this won’t be an issue going forward.

I would love to see the data that has been used to come to these decisions - my understanding is the spread of the virus is predominantly due to close proximity of people in indoor settings. How many of the cases currently being reported have their origins in the activities now being banned?
Poorly considered and implemented strategies to contain the spread of COVID-19 will give rise to low levels of societal acceptance and will ultimately lead to the spread of the disease.
How can 200 people in Austin Stacks Park next Friday night be a problem compared to the hundreds who were on Ballybunion, Banna, Kells or Ballinskelligs beach last Sunday.
Explain these decisions and justify them.
Only positive is if the Championship does go ahead (must be serious doubts), Dublin will finally be able to play their home games in Parnell Park!!!!!!!

It is a petty it’s come to the government hitting sport with closed doors, but the supporters have not been following the advice and protocols put in place and neither were the officials doing their job in watching for crowds gathering in clusters to watch matches. I was at a hurling match over the weekend and counted 286 people not including players and managers. Now we will have to pay the price. It is increasingly likely that the inter county championship will not go ahead from a financial cost. This virus is here well into next year and the Gaa will be financially hurt for the foreseeable future. I would hope the next time an opportunity comes to support our clubs and watch a beautiful game that people will stick to the regulations put in place.

It doesn’t matter what the capacity of the stadium is the advice and protocols are to be followed full stop! It is a hard pill to swallow but lets look in the mirror and ask have we been taking this seriously.

GAA calls for evidence to support government measures Updated / Tuesday, 18 Aug 2020 21:55
The surge in Covid-19 cases over the last two weeks has seen the government move to have no fans present at all. The surge in Covid-19 cases over the last two weeks has seen the government move to have no fans present at all.
The GAA has called for "empirical evidence" to be presented to explain the Government's decision to ban all spectators from sporting events until at least 13 September.
Taoiseach Micheál Martin confirmed that a decision has been taken to ban all spectators from sporting events until at least the middle of next month.
Up until now 200 people were allowed be part of an outdoor sporting event, which meant 50 to 120 GAA fans could attend matches.
A planned move to permit 500 people at events was delayed when cases of Covid-19 increased.
The surge in cases over the last two weeks has seen the government move to have no fans present at all.
"Following this evening’s unexpected announcement the GAA invites Dr Ronan Glynn and NPHET to present the empirical evidence which informed the requirement for the association to curtail its activities," a statement said.
"The association will tonight be issuing an invitation to Dr Glynn to meet with its Covid Advisory Group in this regard without delay. The GAA and its members remain at all times committed to protecting public health."
Offaly GAA chairman Michael Duignan described the new restrictions imposed on sporting events as a "big, big setback" and also called on the government to release any evidence they have that links the rate of infections to the crowds that have been attending club games in recent months.
"I'm a loss for words this evening, really disappointed again," Duignan said this evening.
"I'd just love to know where the evidence is coming from to support this. We obviously know we're in a pandemic, we've been through a lot over the last six months.
We've had no cases in Offaly that are linked to the GAA. I just wonder who is representing the GAA, who is representing the young people who've been badly hit with all these restrictions.
"I'm calling on the government to see the advice. I'd love to see the advice that links it (Covid cases) to GAA activity and the few people we've had at matches here.
The FAI meanwhile has confirmed that the SSE Airtricity League and Women's National League will continue behind closed doors
Adult Amateur and underage football will continue, subject to updated Government and FAI guidelines, with no spectators permitted at any match under the jurisdiction of the FAI.
Underage training groups must include two coaches and up to 13 players, while adult training groups must include one coach and up to 14 players.

I really don't understand the logic behind this. The GAA has erred on the side of caution in all aspects of this pandemic. Here in Meath Simonstown GAA closed for the prescibed 48 hours with a case involving a Junior footballer who also happens to be a Garda in Slane, he contracted the virus in the course of his work not his leisure. I have long since given up on the prospect of Inter County but I thought we would at least have club championships to keep us going. Feeling very demoralised this evening.

I gave a full week recently helping out at our club's Cul Camp, checking the Health Questionnaires every morning, dressing rooms closed, emphasizing that hands are sanitized following use of the bathrooms, kids were not allowed to leave their pods to play with a child from another pod. Equipment sanitized at the end of the day, etc, etc and every day witnessed 4 early 20's coaches all getting into the same Micra car at 2pm. They're looking in all the wrong places for problems!!

I am surprised that people are questioning the latest edicts from our “leading scientists “ How dare you. Fifty people are allowed at indoor events like weddings and funerals. Nobody is allowed at outdoor events like football matches. What is bizarre or inconsistent about that?
I wonder how long before young people take to the streets reclaiming their right to go to a football etc. If not , it will once more be a case of Croppy lie down and wear your mask of course.
I wrote about this farcical situation yesterday but sadly my post iwas deleted , presumably because somebody mused as to what my contribution had to do with the GAA. Is there currently anything more pertinent to the GAA than this virus? Unless of course some people here have no interest in attending matches. That is possible.

So now only 15 players can train in Fitzgerald Stadium or on Banna Beach. Meanwhile 50 people can celebrate at an indoor wedding or nosh the pints in a restaurant/bar. This is the way forward, is it? Not a word about the meat factory owners or the DP providers, let's just kick the people again.
Couldn't make it up, you really couldn't. Pointless nonsense from pointless clowns with no coherent strategy and even less credibility.

i think the message from today is "things are not back to normal". We will have to live with this for probably a few years. We can frustrate the virus by "Keeping our distance" and not let it spread from one person to another, but young fellas are impatient, want to meet up with their mates, have a few beers, a house party, bit of craic, go back home, "what's the harm". But then the virus wins!!!

I think those in charge have lost the run of themselves and have lost sight of what they are trying to achieve.
It is universally accepted that until a vaccine is found and is in widescale use this virus will continue to infect people. The timescale on this (vaccine) process is uncertain and many "experts" are saying the vaccine may not be 100% effective. This virus may well persist for several years to come. The primary objective of the containment measures in March was to buy time to organise ourselves and avoid overburdening the hospital system. We have failed miserable to orgainse ourselves with the recent increase in cases showing the test and contact system is still taking too long and not able to cope with increases. Thankfully the hospital numbers have not gone up significantly and there is adequate capacity to cope at present. I totally get it that we need to protect the vulnerable and keep the hospital/ICU numbers low but fail to see the link between that and the apparent selective treatment of sporting events by the Government decisions yesterday. The use of masks in Supermarkets seems to have been a relative success with a high degree of compliance - if there is concerns about outdoor events broaden the use of masks as an initial step.
I need live sport to keep me sane - I have been at five games in the last five weeks (multiple grades and age groups) and have been the better of it. Brief hellos and quick post match chats have all been socially distanced and the behaviour I have witnessed has been good. I feel a lot safer at a game than doing the shopping or going to a restaurant.

I am endlessly curious about other people’s intentions - their agenda. Right now, it’s hard to dismiss the suspicion, which any man of common prudence would immediately recognise, that this forum is being hijacked to facilitate the dissemination of toxic and cynical conspiracy theories that are only furthering fear and confusion.
I would go so far as to say to that, it would appear that a number of regular and valued contributors are genuinely “gun-shy” of engaging in day to day conversation. Personally, I’m inclined to be amused by the vehemence of others rather than be induced to imitate them. Postings were taken down not because of anybody’s “musings” but because you, and others, choose to ignore the very clear direction of the Control of 5th. July.
It appears that one or two individuals, whose modus operandi is to bait and provokes other group members, often with the result of drawing them into endless fruitless arguments and diverting attention from the stated purposes of the group.
Freedom of speech only means you should be able to say what you like without prosecution; it doesn't oblige anyone to have to host a platform for your views. It's a false premise. No, media sites are not just going to allow endless heaps of false and misleading content in the name of free speech. To think they would or should is a nonsense and you should expect the same treatment for as long as you continue to shoehorn this dogma into every debate.

There is nothing false in what I am saying and I am not baiting anybody, I am merely trying to provide some context in attempting to understand the logic of the latest announcements that impacts directly on the GAA and wider community. What possible scientific basis can there now be for banning spectators at matches but certain indoor activities are okay? Can you answer that one please? If you agree with the announcement then please explain why because I am open to changing my mind if a rational and logical argument can be made. So far no one has but on here I just get dismissed as some sort of trouble maker because I hold a different view to the mainstream. If we can't ask these kinds of questions then we might as well all give up.
Following the logic of the latest announcement, as a parent with kids playing matches am I also deemed a spectator for their games? Do I now have to drop off my kids at pitch side then leave the ground? We shouldn't be afraid of pointing out the inconsistencies in government announcements just because you and some others are uncomfortable with that. As I have said all along, this is very relevant to the GAA and even more so after the latest measures. There will literally be nothing to talk about as no one but players and management will be at the games, a complete farce of a situation IMO.

The introduction of an overt political remark “Croppy lie down” has sought to politicise the debate and to link the actions of our government with the conduct of British occupation forces over 100 years ago. Politics has no place on this site.

Rollingstone.
If you think for one moment that I will engage, in what has clearly been designated an inappropriate discourse for this Forum, with someone who is intentionally misrepresenting himself as interested in debating about the tragic Coronavirus but whose actual motive is to provoke and disrupt, you have failed miserably. One day you may realise that the world isn’t one Liberal Arts College.

Politics has no place on this site. Perhaps especially in Kerry GAA where we have a tradition of uniting on the field despite divisions off it. Personally I think commentary on how the covid is affecting GAA is fair, and despite some sharp elbows, Veteran largely focuses on the issue of the GAA. However commentary dappled in misinformation, quackery, and conspiracy theory, with token references to the GAA, clearly has no place on this forum, as has been well established by Control.

GAA clubs around the country carried out fantastic work during the early months of the pandemic - doing shopping for people who weren't allowed outside, delivering shopping, fuel, medicines and the likes free of charge to people in their communities.
If I was somebody who gave up my time then to help the community, only to be told now by NPHET that I couldn't watch my son or daughter play in a game this weekend I would have serious thoughts about volunteering like I did in March and April again.
The GAA allowed the HSE to use many stadia as testing centres in those months also. When the existing centres are under pressure again this winter and the HSE come crying to the GAA looking to use those stadia again with their BS We're in it all together mantra, I wonder will it be met with the same willingness again.

No, media sites are not just going to allow endless heaps of false and misleading content in the name of free speech. To think they would or should is a nonsense and you should expect the same treatment for as long as you continue to shoehorn this dogma into every debate. This is an extraordinary post on two counts. Firstly it is replete with derogatory terms to describe the intentions of : people who hold contrarian views : "agenda", "forum being hijacked to facilitate the dissemination of toxic and cynical conspiracy theories", "modus operandi is to bait and provoke other members", "heaps of false and misleading content". The only reference missing is a " basket of deplorables". Secondly, not once in this outpouring of vitriol is there any effort to engage with the substance of the arguments being made by these "disseminators of toxic theories. In GAA parlance, this post constitutes an example of playing the man rather than the ball. At this stage I had better come clean. I do have an "agenda". Since last March, in spite of living in a liberal democracy, I have been forbidden from attending football matches. The reasons given for this prohibition are inconsistent and contradictory and disproportionate in my view and in the view of others better qualified than I to pronounce on such matters Just witness the latest list of edicts. To compound this intolerable situation, on next Saturday evening a footballing boy wonder from Fossa is scheduled to play in my town. Conceivably, this may never again happen in my lifetime. Are there people on this forum who feel that I should contain my fury at this restriction? As Dylan Thomas said: " Do not go gentle into that good night. Rage rage against----" It would appear that a lot of people here are not prepared to rage but rather are obsequiously prepared to tolerate every infringement of their civil rights for no discernible reason. Count me out. P.S. A poster has suggested that my use of the term " Croppy boy lie down" is overtly political. Here in my area we make frequent use of the the figure of speech known as a metaphor.

It seems to me that the powers that be are worried/frightened and that worries me. It seems to me that the powers that be don't know what the hell is going on or what is causing it....... The Department of Arts has confirmed that cinemas, galleries and theatres can continue to operate with 50 people indoors and 200 outdoors, as long as appropriate measures, including physical distancing, are in place. Following the announcement last night of new restrictions to stop the spread of Covid-19, many arts bodies expressed concern that their audiences would be limited to six indoors. However, the Department confirmed in a statement that businesses and services such as cinemas, galleries, theatres etc are deemed to be 'controlled environments', and that they can continue to operate under the previous limits as long as appropriate physical distancing can continue to be maintained. Individual groupings attending these venues must be limited to six people from no more than three households.

I expected them to increase the numbers allowed into games and not the other way round.
They is a tweet flying around by a lady in Wexford offering to stage her wedding in Wexford park during a club game so that 50 can get into watch it.
I still believe they are in a stage of complete panic though. Bad news must be coming down the tracks.

Fantastic idea - so the GAA need to organise music for half time and become an ARTS event and thereby qualify for 200 attendees again. See the forum has a place afterall....... If they bring in a chip van and everybody gets a burger and chips, paying €9 ad then sit in the stands and on the terrace for 105 minutes we can have 500+ once they are socially distanced...........

And now, no one gets to see it. A real shame but sure so long as the ballet can carry on, that's the main thing. psst Veteran: see you at the college wall; I'll bring the ladder.
