Mahony was involved with the Dr Crokes hurlers in 2022 on the fitness side so he is not new to them
Still, I would have expected Aidan to be managing a football club team somewhere in the county so this hurling route is interesting
Dr Crokes have been strengthening their senior hurling panel, a few very good hurlers from more traditional hurling counties living and working in Killarney & East Kerry have joined them in recent seasons. Conor Bohane, Mark Heffernan and Vincent Doyle are serious hurlers. Mike Milner from Cork is with them for years, has huge experience in hurling and football and focusing on hurling last few seasons. They also have good home grown hurlers like the Lenihans, Tom Doyle who have played hurling with Kerry at under age and the present Kerry under 20 hurling squad has a few Dr Crokes lads on it like Charlie Keating, Nathian Doncel, Brian O'Connor.
It gets forgotten Killarney has a bit of hurling tradition, the old Killarney hurling club won 3 county minor hurling championships in the 1950s and a senior hurling championship in 1969. After they lost the senior hurling championship final in 1970, the club went defunct in early 1970s which was a spectacular collaspe. Dr Crokes players were centrally involved in the old Killarney hurling clubsuccesses so Crokes have had an association with hurling. There was actually no hurling team @ all in Killarney or East Kerry for the best part of 10 years until st pats east kerry formed in 1983 and then Crokes a few years later when they had enough numbers of their own started their own team
How strong can Dr Crokes be in senior hurling in 2023? They have taken a few trimmings since they went senior in 2021 but there has been a win or two in the county league and north kerry championship and only lost by a point to Abbeydorney in the 2021 county championship. They may have got some additional players who have come to live in their area to strengthen their hand and they have a few young players coming through. It is not impossible that they could cause a few surprises in 2023. All said, it really is great to have a senior hurling club in the competitions from outside North Kerry, just the 8 senior teams in north kerry had become really stale
Crokes are also fielding a junior adult team last two seasons which is a healthy sign

Any word on if Kilgarvan will be playing in the senior championship this year? No word have a few serious hurlers but am not sure they have a big enough panel to be honest for senior Going up a grade in both football and hurling with a panel only 21 players ( almost all dual) is a tall order Donal O'Sullivan if he is with kerry senior footballers would not be available for the senior hurling championship and without him and if a few players go travelling, get injured, senior could go badly wrong for them tough choice for them, they may have their eye on the munster junior club championship , stay intermediate in kerry, win t again and have another cut off the munster junior hurling A Kenmare district team at senior would be interesting backboned by Kilgarvan with a half dozen or so from Kenmare. It gets around the tight panel issue Kilgarvan have , kenmare and kilgarvan play together in hurling underage pretty much from under 15 upwards, they should work together at adult in the senior championship

Any word on if Kilgarvan will be playing in the senior championship this year? Can’t see it, footballing is the stumbling block. I think the aim would be to have Tralee Parnells to win intermediate and go up Senior in 2024 and you have a 10 team SHC. The 8 North Kerry hurling parishes A Killarney hurling team A Tralee hurling team Close up shop and even if Crokes and Parnells are not winning no relegation, sure I think Ballyheigue went about 10 years without winning a single match up until this year which is madness when you think of it.

Kenmare and Kilgarvan as South Kerry, St Pats and Rathmore could be East Kerry etc While I'm not sure if it's true or not but I've heard the North Kerry teams wouldn't allow it. Saying South Kerry players can't play in both senior and intermediate. This despite the fact in the past they'd lads on the Kerry panel playing with their own Intermediate teams.

Pats struggled to field at adult in 2022 when Rathmore left them and formed their own Rathmore team. In the long run I expect Rathmore will get stronger at hurling, they have good numbers underage, Crokes might not always stay senior. In that instance, there would be a case for East Kerry Divisional team in the hurling made up of Crokes, Rathmore and St Pats

They might even join a Cork league at some stage.

Yep, though there is actually more hurling played in Rathmore than in their immediate neighbouring Cork parishes some of which have no hurling at all! good work at underage last while in Rathmore, operating at B and C levels but nonetheless have a production line of players to feed into their adult team

I would have said about 5 years ago. Can't remember where I heard it. The way the nk clubs would shut it down was that when the proposal came up the north kerry clubs would tell the county board they were opposed. My understanding of things is that for most of the hurling stuff the county board will discuss stuff and achieve a consensus between the all of the interested hurling clubs. The vast majority of the time the football only clubs tend to let the hurling clubs look after hurling issues.

I see Barry O’Mahony (Crotta & St.Senans) and Barry O’Sullivan (Kilmoyley & Dingle) are both starting for Kerry footballers tonight v Cork.
Donal O Sullivan (Kilgarvan) is on the bench.
They are 3 very good hurlers who would really improve the Kerry hurling squad.
That’s the dual player issue, impossible to do the two at county level.

The South Kerry teams will at least try something different playing in Cork leagues etc

The majority of north kerry hurling folk are delighted that hurling is developing in Tralee town. The North Kerry Hurling and the club delegates that make it up were very happy to grant Dr Crokes and Tralee Parnells adult hurling teams permission to play in the North Kerry Senior Hurling championship in 2021 and 2022 so that goes against your theory. Dr Crokes actually beat Lixnaw in it and damn near beat Crotta O'Neills. Tralee Parnells play in North Kerry hurling under age competitions

They're accompanying them in the North Kerry championship at the moment. But it remains to be seen how accompanying they'll be should one of Parnells or Crokes start to beat them more often.

Dr Crokes were the only intermediate champions to seek to move up and it was granted by the county board without objection from anyone I expect if Kilgarvan as the current intermediate champions look to go up senior it will happen ditto when Tralee Parnells win it which will be some year soon they will defo look to go up and it will not be blocked by any north kerry team

Would they be as accommodating to a South Kerry team?

Division one of the senior hurling returns this week. Two noticeable items in the fixtures for the three divisions - Parnell have opted to drop a grade to Div 2 and Rathmore have opted to go up a grad to Div 2.
A great decision by Rathmore, regardless of results they will be getting more hurling which can only lead to increased interest and an improved standard of hurling.
It's also noticeable how little games will be played in Div 3.

You are correct re Division 3 and it will get worse, I am not sure St Pats and Duagh will field consistently The formation of an adult hurling team in Rathmore has left St Pats in a bad way for numbers and with Crokes fielding a senior team and a junior team it offers hurling for players of all abilities so players will drift towards Crokes rather than St Pats. Duagh have had no underage for years so they may struggle too The South Kerry board usually run a South Kerry Junior league, Rathmore will probably still play in this which would mean more matches for Rathmore and the Division 3 County league teams. Rathmore are clearly ambitious by stepping up to Division 2 and having fielded minor teams the last 2 seasons, they should have a stronger panel developing. There are also a number of players on their all ireland winning intermediate football panel that were good underage hurlers and if a few of them came on board it would strengthen their hand Division 1 of the county league will be interesting but will be difficult to form observations for the championship from it as many teams will be without county players for nearly all of the matches

Daugh stopped with underage when they started at senior level, so much be 15 years or more since they had underage teams. Not sure where they're even getting players from at this stage. This year imo is an important one for Parnells. They really need to pick up a title. Rathmore are very quickly starting to catch up with them and like with Stacks if they start to drop down they could find it hard to move back up.

Radio Kerry had a preview section last week ahead of the matches in fairness but that is not county board related Brendan Mahony former kerry senior hurling star father of Barry has taken over the Crotta senior hurlers The kerry hurlers played an A v B match last weekend among themselves, sending the players back to their clubs for the opening round of the league would have been my preference, Cody used do it with Kilkenny

Disappointing result against Kildare this afternoon. It's very had to know where Kerry are and are going in general.
By the sounds of it on the radio Kerry couldn't handle them in the first half. Carlow lost today so that will help but will have to get a result against Down.

Carlow lost today so that will help but will have to get a result against Down. It’s a trend with this Kerry team, it seems they have go behind by 7 or 8 points before they wake up and start hurling. Same with Antrim in the Joe McDonagh final, another 10 minutes in that game and Kerry would of won that final after a terrible start. Jason Diggins, Jordan Conway & Shane Conway were outstanding in the second half for Kerry today, Leane from Ballyheigue. Podge Boyle had an off day and Mackassey only hurled in patches which is very unlike both of them to be fair. I think we will play Kildare in a league semi final and I think Kerry could take them if they hurl from the first whole and not for only 35 minutes. Kerry have the hurlers, it’s in the heads that it seems to be a problem.

County and North kerry league competitions making poor progress because of the weather and pitches
Just one county league match played at the weekend and it was a a win for Dr Crokes over St Brendans
The win will give hurling in Crokes a lift

Another good win for Dr Crokes in the county league, this time against the county champions Causeway
Causeway short the kerry senior hurlers, good win for Crokes all the same, they are the story of the county league so far
They have good young players in Charlie Keating, Nathaniel Doncel, Brian O'Connor
A great feile final at the weekend, Ballyduff beat Crotta after extra time.
