Dan O’Brien looked to struggle around the middle to my eyes at least. I’d imagine he’d be more comfortable across the half back line anyway.
East Kerry were fortunate to get out with the win. Paudie Clifford very strong in the first half but completely faded in the second. Eddie Horan and Thomas Hickey gave them plenty of trouble at the back. They lost the midfield battle too but it’s a sign of a good team that they still won, albeit quite fortunately.
Mark Ryan had a big impact off the bench and has put his hand up to take Kearney’s spot.
I don’t see David’s red getting overturned personally but will be an interesting one.

St Brendan’s voyage continues as Kerry stars excel
SATURDAY, AUGUST 29, 2020 - 20:16 PM MURT MURPHY St Brendans 2-17 Killarney Legion 1-9
Two spectacular goals from St Brendan’s Kerry midfield pairing Jack Barry and Diarmuid O’Connor within a minute of each other in the opening laid the foundations for St Brendan’s eleven points victory over a disappointing Killarney Legion side, in the opening quarterfinal played at the Austin Stack Park.
St Brendans controlled the game from the very outset and only looked vulnerable in the closing minutes of the opening half when they coughed up the three soft points of the half, two as a direct result of misdirected kick-outs.
St Brendans made an explosive start when they scored the opening three points in as many minutes from Kieran O’Dwyer, Diarmuid O’Connor and an Ivan Parker free. Conor Keane opened Legion’s account in the sixth minute when he converted a free after he was fouled himself.
But Jack Barry and Diarmuid O’Connor were lording matters at midfield and only James O’Donoghue looked a threat for the Killarney side. Two more Ivan Parker points and a Michael Kelliher special saw St Brendans lead 0-6 to 0-2 at the water break.
But on resumption, St Brendans hit Legion with a double sucker punch when a flowing move saw Ian McCarthy find Jack Barry at his shoulder and the Kerry midfielder drilled the ball to the Legion net past Brian Kelly.
From the kick out Alan O’Donoghue and Ivan Parker combined to send man of the match Diarmuid O’Connor through and he beat Kelly with a clinical finish and suddenly Killarney Legion were on the ropes, trailing 2-6 to 0-2.
Jamie O’Sullivan and Alan O’Donoghue swapped points but three late Legion points gave them a glimmer of hope with James O’Donoghue, Conor Keane and Jonathon Lyne on the mark as St Brendans retired 2-7 to 0-6 in front.
Two early St Brendan’s points from Cillian Fitzgerald and Diarmuid O’Connor pushed them further clear but Legion struck for a goal through Jamie O’Sullivan but while it reduced the deficit to six that was as good as it got for Legion.
Even a second yellow for St Brendans Thomas Kearns failed to halt St Brendans march to the semi-finals Diarmuid O’Connor bringing his tally to 1-3 and they outscored Legion 0-5 to 0-2 in the final ten minutes with Lawrence Bastible, Fergal Barry, Jack Barry, Diarmuid O’Connor and Alan O’Donoghue seeing them cruise to victory.

NEWS SPORT LIFESTYLE OPINION East Kerry overcome inspired challenge from St Kieran's
SATURDAY, AUGUST 29, 2020 - 21:19 PM JOHN O’DOWD East Kerry 2-13 St Kieran's 1-14
Champions East Kerry had to dig deep into their reserves of guts and fighting spirit before surmounting an inspired challenge from St Kieran’s in a pulsating Kerry SFC quarter-final at Austin Stack Park tonight, though star man David Clifford was sent off in the dying moments.
Trailing by three points (1-13 to 1-10) at the second half water break after James Walsh’s superb goal for the underdogs, Jerry O’Sullivan’s star-studded outfit appeared to be in big trouble, having also survived a missed penalty from St Kieran’s earlier in the half when Paul Walsh’s effort was well saved by Kerry goalkeeper Shane Ryan.
Cometh the hour, cometh the man, however, as a hitherto subdued Clifford struck for East Kerry’s killer second goal in the 55th minute after brother Paudie and Darragh Roche created the opening for the Kerry captain to drill a low shot to the back of the St Kieran’s net.
Even though the outstanding Eddie Horan immediately levelled the scores again (2-11 to 1-14), East Kerry now had the bit between their teeth, with the Clifford brothers adding the final two points of an exceptional contest.
East Kerry's Brendan O’Keeffe and David Clifford after the game. East Kerry's Brendan O’Keeffe and David Clifford after the game. However, there was huge controversy at the very end when, after an off-the-ball incident, David Clifford was shown a straight red card by referee Jonathan Griffin, which would appear to rule the winners’ talisman out of the semi-final.
East Kerry led at the break by a single point (1-7 to 0-9) after an opening half full of sparkling passages of football from both teams.
Indeed, St Kieran’s were left rueing three missed goal chances that would have put a different complexion on the scoreboard, with Eddie Horan, Paul Walsh and Thomas Hickey all missing chances to raise the green flag.
At the other end, Paudie Clifford showed them how it was done with a superb left-footed finish to notch East Kerry’s first goal, but it was brother David who was the talking point, for different reasons, at the final whistle.

Lost last few minutes of 1st half. Just back now I think. Tony Brosnan and Killian Spillane on fire today.

Peter Keane would have enjoyed that game.
Micheál Burns, Tony Brosnan, Gavin White when he came on, Gavin Crowley and the Spillane brothers all in very good form.
Tadhg Morley found Brosnan too hot to handle, but left 1 on 1 so often in those conditions in Killarney I think any defender would have struggled.
Kieran O'Leary made a big difference when he came on at the 1st water break. Brian Looney very good again.

I watched the EK v St Kierans game in the knowledge that DC would miss the semi final and really its hard to see them going further.
They look like the divisional side they are with little in the way of intricate buildup.
They are nearly flying on one wing and that wing is Paudie Clifford. He was simply immense even if he faded a small bit towards the end.
DC was left in the corner till the final quarter and was well held.
In the final quarter he moved out around the 45 yard line and things started happening then for EK.
EK started well with Dara Moynihan, Dara Roche and Paudie flying.
Kierans started winning Shane Ryan kickout and a few points ensued mainly from frees by Eddie Horan.
Eddie is a fine long range kicker of the hand from frees.
Paul Walsh and Jack Sherwood had a good joist. Jack popped up on the 45 in the second half to belt over a beauty with the outside of the boot.
Paul Walsh had a poor enough night and was taken off at the end. He missed a penalty with one of those short run ups which seldom work in GAA and options taken on other occasions were wrong.
The EK goal in the first half was from a Share Ryan kickout, fetched by Dara Moynihan who sent Paudie Clifford haring inside his man and Paudie buried it.
At the other end Thomas hickey fluffed a goal chance and another goal chace was pointed when Paul Walsh was in a goal scoring position but the pass never came.
On 44 mins a brilliant move put James Walsh through and he buried a low shot to put Kierans a goal up.
Walsh and Maurice Hickey were on top at midfield now.
After the water break David Clifford was brought out around the 40 and the game turned.
He slotted over a point from 45 yards but then missed a handy free and kicked a poor wide from play.
Sean Horan raced up for Kierans but his effort fell into Shane Ryans hands and it looked a tired effort and Kierans began to wilt a bit.
On 54 mins Paudie Clifford near the corner flag turned his man and found Dara Roche who fed DC and David threaded a low shot to the net past a few Kierans jerseys. It was an expert finish.
Shane Cronin heavily fouled Eddie Horan on the 40 but up gets Eddie to level the game.
The lead point was from a soft enough free for a foul on DC. Then who else but Paudie to belt over a long range effort to put the 2 up.
A Kierans attack broke down at the end and at the play is moving swiftly towards the other end a Kierans player falls to the ground and DC is protesting his innocence.
The ref is in no doubt.
To me it looks like Davids marker is grabbing him and David shoves him off and brings his knee up unto the groin.
All so unnecessary with the game won.
I think Kierans had just two wides but that stat does not tell the tale..they had 3 goal chances in the first half and other chances were driven into Shane Ryans hands.
EK will have to improve dramatically. Paul Murphy was largely anonymous.

Thanks for that fine match summary Mickmack.
Paudie Clifford must surely be pressing hard for an intercounty wing forward(?) call up. Hope he remains injury free.

Not impressed with the stream today. Paid €10 for a stream which constantly cut out and needednto be refreshed. Cut out just before half time in Mid-Kerry, Kenmare game and missednthe goal. It cut out again just before full time with Kenmare chasing an equaliser and couldn't get back in at all. Disgraceful.

Started buffering for me with about 55 mins on the clock in Kenmare game.Got going again but crashed completely with about 2 mins of injury time left. The 247 website itself seemed to crash at this stage as I couldn't even get on to the homepage, same as what happened at end of the first half in the Crokes match.

How did Gavin OShea play? Did a good job linking defence and attack in his customary style, important player for them.

Kenmare have given some entertainment in the last 2 or 3 years. Play smart football with great commitment and no little skill. Always impressed by Kevin O'Sullivan at midfield, excellent again today. Paul O'Connor took on the role of scorer in chief with great style, given that Sean O'Shea was severely handicapped from the start with a right leg injury. Strength in depth of Mid Kerry told in the final quarter. Pa Kilkenny, Ciaran Kennedy, Liam Carey and Gavan O'Grady all did well when things weren't going their way. Not without their chance in the last 4. Should make for good semi finals whatever the draw is.

They didn't play anywhere near their best last night and still won against a Kierans who I'd argue are as good as anything left in the competition. Of the teams left I'd give Brendans the best chance of beating them due to their work rate and midfield partnership but I still find it hard to see them beating East Kerry.

If East Kerry draw Crokes in the Semi-Final it would surely favour the Killarney side with no David Clifford in the side. I'm sure if you asked the squad they would rather have to face East Kerry in a semi than the final given those circumstances. I'd be surprised if those two sides didn't meet in either a semi final or final this year as both teams are a level above Brendans & Mid. Kerry. Crokes look a pale shadow of the team they were over the 2010-2019 decade but still have the firepower to cause any team damage. I'd fancy East Kerry to win if the 2 were to meet in a final with 5 intercounty players (Shane Ryan, Paul Murphy, Jack Sherwood, Dara Moynihan & David Clifford) in their starting XV however it would be hard to call if the 2 were to meet in a semi without David Clifford.

Was SOB fit to play...how did he do if he was fit He played alright but didn't have his finest game, scored a lovely score in the 1st half but didn't have the greatest of impacts. Tried to take on the Mid Kerry defence on several occasions but was swallowed up and forced to recycle the ball. However Kenmares biggest issue today was Seánie being injured, he played the whole 60+ minutes but with a heavily strapped right leg which he didn't use to kick with once until he attempted a last minute equaliser wide (a kick he would have usually nailed). He even handed Paul O'Connor the free taking duties. Clearly wasn't the same player today he would be when 100% fit, surprised Kenmare didn't replace him at the 2nd half water break when Kenmare were 4 points up and in the driving seat.
