The most important thing today in those conditions against that team was to get out of there without any serious injuries. Hope Steven O Brien is OK. And Peter Keane will have learned a few things about our defence that need to be reiterated. Exactly. Working yesterday, so I watched only part of the 1st half and conditions looked horrific. It's plain to see how much the GAA care about player welfare when matches go ahead on days like yesterday. Madness. As the thunder rolled and storm raged again around 11 last night, I was thinking of players, management and supporters and hoping they were all safely home.

If you had a decent greyhound you would not race it yesterday.
You will get bad weather in January and February and the land in lots of counties where gaelic football is played is not great especially north of Navan. The drainage is poor.
While the sending off was a disgrace i felt relieved that DC wasnt going to be injured in this game. Even the young lady singing the National Anthem could hardly muster the will to finish it.
The inter county season could easily be done and dusted in 5 months... April to August. Start the league in April and have a knockout championship based on final placings in the league. It would dynamite.

Hard to take much from that, only that they battled away, conditions too bad to read anything into the result.
Don't understand why Geaney has to play every game. All strapped up, he should be given a break, always delivers in Croker when hes needed. Plenty lads they could be looking at.
Clifford supreme, only Geaney went in to help out when the lad had him pinned on the ground, wheres the support, should have all piled in. Shouldn't be letting them rough up the boy wonder.
Foley & White need to up there games massively. Foley has it but he needs to be a bit more aggressive, wont win a straight race every time against his man, needs to master a few dark arts, not nasty stuff but enough to give him a chance. Maybe P Crowley could do a workshop. Don't think White will be starter come C'ship.
J Barry ok, need to start D O'Connor with him in Morans absence.

Given the conditions and the opponents yesterday it was surely a game to stick Tommy Walsh in from the start. Killian Spillane and Paul Geaney together in the FF line not needed yesterday. Plus Tommy would have sorted it out if those around him were getting blackguarded.

Was Paul Geaney fouled as he though on goal. He'd 5 yards on his man when he got the ball, 20 yards later his man got in enough contact to disrupt the shot. He shouldn't have been caught to be fouled!

Ref only got worse after my earlier post. That was nothing short of an absolute disgrace. Next year at congress rather than focusing on new rules they should hold officials to account more for their implementation of current laws. An absolute farce. What has to happen for us to get Tyrone in a super 8 group, would love to give them so retribution. To be in same group as Tyrone in Super 8, following must happen a) Kerry win Munster champ, Tyrone lose ulster final and win final round qualifier or Tyrone lose in early rounds of ulster champ and beat the losing ulster or Connacht finalist b) If Tyrone win ulster champ and Kerry do not win munster champ, then Kerry would have to beat the beaten leinster or munster finalists in last round qualifiers. Option A seems more logical as on current form Tyrone will not beat Donegal, but Cork could be dangerous game for Kerry.

I felt Peter Harte was also wronged by the ref. Some poor calls yesterday. Tommy Walsh is not getting a fair run and Geaney was way off play. Players not involved in league games will struggle later in the season.

I know it's been said a thousand times already, but what do guys like Tony Brosnan and David Shaw need to do to get a run? Paul Geaney had a bad day at the office yesterday. He could do with a rest and the two guys should be more than capable of filling in against Meath next time out.
Also feel that Tommy Walsh should have been introduced a lot earlier yesterday. With the poor conditions and slower play, he could have contributed in the FF line.

I really can't understand the calls for Tommy Walsh to have been on earlier yesterday. The conditions meant that winning or fielding clean ball was unlikely. Plus his shooting is not good if he wins a mark.

Also slightly off topic but was that Tyrone 1st time playing a competitive inter county game there. Venue looked familiar but don't remember Tyrone playing too many home games outside of Healy Park. Maybe somebody could shed some light on this for me. Thanks Sure they play most of their games at the Athletic Grounds! Dungannon has hosted the odd game over the years. Edendork too, but mostly McKenna Cup. Pomeroy May have been the same.

He claimed one mark in the short time he was on and won a free out of it. Surely would have claimed more ball than Paul Geaney, he was like a cardboard cutout of his former self.

I made the trip up yesterday - some thoughts .....
Game should not have gone ahead - I walked one part of the pitch beforehand and there's no way it should have been played - it wasdangerous for the players. The ref walked the pitch before the game - hopping the ball here and there. It didnt come back up to him a few times but still went ahead regardless.
I have been saying for some time that Kerry are playing too many nice footballers in defence - over the last 3 games I can only remember one decent hard shoulder on an opposing player - by Enright in Tralee. There is a big lack of aggression there - need a different flavour of player.
People are very hard on PG here - this man is still a fantastic player - we would be a lot worse off without him. Fair play to him for playing in the league - in previous years players of his ilk would have had the first few rounds off.
Goalie is far too slow on his kick-outs. When we were ahead I think this was a deliberate ploy by him - but it backfired big time. By the time he got to kick it out Tyrone had picked a man each up and we lost numerous breaking balls from our own kick-out as a result in the second half. In contrast, when we were level and fell behind he did the kick-outs a lot faster and made his man each time. A lesson learned hopefully.....
D O Connor has loads of potential ability, but he seems to let the game glide by him - as per backs he seems to be lacking in aggression and fight. Perhaps someone could rile him up a bit before he goes on.....otherwise better off letting someone else with a more robust style in there. Kearney a very good addition this year - this guy is the real deal.
Forwards overall were decent, in what was abysmal conditions. I thought Tommy should have been used a lot earlier - it was obvious that a big target man could have been used to good effect in those conditions.
Everyone is aware of the wrong that was done to David, but the exact same happened to Jack Barry. His man caught him in a headlock and hauled him to the ground (seems its probably a training drill in Tyrone camp). Again the linesman copped out and ref gave the blacks and both were off - dreadful decision.
Followed by the worst ref decision I have ever seen - Tyrone people around me were actually laughing when this happened - Paul M was soloing up the left side when we were a point down. Ref was following him and his line of sight was drawn to a Tyrone sub who was just standing on the sideline, right in front of where I was on the terrace. The ref blew the whistle to stop the play and beckoned the player to come on, even though their officials were not even trying to get him on. They did not know what was going on either - but duly obliged to send him on and waste a few more seconds. Meanwhile, all the Tyrone lads had funnelled back and were ready for our attack. Absolutely amazing stuff - would not have believed it if I hadnt seen it. This lad shouldnt be reffing club matches.
Overall, a one point loss is not the end of the world - they battled hard and it could have gone either way in reality.
And finally - where is Paudie Clifford? Is he not going to get a run? He could add a lot to this team.

MeathExile, thanks for detailed and informative report. I find it hard to disagree with any of your observations.
It looked to me that Kerry could have won it and very likely would have got at least a draw if David had.not been banished. I think. I am right in saying that it was this referee and his merry band of umpires who officiated our game up in Navan last summer and he issued Stephen O’Brien with the phantom black card which was later rescinded. I expect of course that our County Board will seek to rescind this card as well. In general I felt we gave too many soft frees to both sides and of course brandished cards unnecessarily which seems to be the. norm now.
Very likely we would have won it if Paul Geaney had scored that first half goal. He had hard look because Nial Morgan just threw a flailing left leg at it and luckily for him it connected. It was reminiscent of the 2008 final when Paschal Canavan brought off a similar leg save against Declan which again probably decided that match.
We seemed to be under pressure again with our kicks out and I agree that Shane should speed up matters and keep his eyes vigilant for a secure recipient which admittedly doesn’t always present himself.
Once more our backs gave away too many baby frees which the referee was too happy to award. I have repeatedly said that if you are giving away a free you should make sure you get your pound of flesh. In other words you put in a serious physical challenge. The Tyrone guys were well able to do that as Stephen O’Brien will testify after Kerry’s first attack. Jason Foley in particular is guilty of these types of fouls. Also , I wish our backs would try to get out in front of their man and attack the ball with venom.
I felt that Tommy Walsh could have been brought out to midfield as the second half advanced in order to gain some badly needed possession.
I am not sure who is up next but we would need to win that to make things more comfortable.

A goalkeeper who can kick the ball out 30 or 40 yards equally as accurate with both left and right foot is invaluable at this level. In the 2 or 3 seconds needed for Shane Ryan to adjust his body position in the run up, the other team have moved in unison to the correct side of the field.

We should take 6 points from our remaining fixtures. Meath,Mayo,Donegal are all winnable games. That i think would put us in a good shout of a final.

I don't see us winning all our remaining 4 games and this is the most likely one to lose.

We must beat Meath, no ifs and or buts. We could very easily be on zero points right now.
Huge match between fellow 3 pointers Mayo and Monaghan in Clones on 23rd as well...the loser there could be in trouble. If it's Mayo that lose in Clones, then the Castlebar fixture against us on Saturday 29th will be a massive game for both teams...send us to 7 points and keep Mayo on 3...or both on 5 points!!!
We can't bank on anything in Iniskeen, that's for sure.
It could all come down to the Donegal game in Killarney...winner might be in with a shot to be in the final and loser could be doing sums in the head for relegation.

A number of managers are starting to call out the time keeping issue now at the end of games. It is becoming completely unsatisfactory now and not fit for purpose. Time to bring in 40 minutes halves, stop the clock for injures and blow the whistle on 40 minutes. Everyone would know where they stand.
Regarding the game, I wouldn't lose any sleep about losing an away game in a mud bath in a club grounds away form home. Kerry would probably have eked out a draw if DC had stayed on the pitch.
Great to see Tyrone creating the conditions to allow McShane prepare in a professional way for his peek years with Tyrone. That is where it is at if the top counties want to retain their top blue chip young players from AFL.

I think the treatment (attention) of our young star David Clifford was disgraceful, by both Tyrone and Referee. Ref did the usual cop out call of 2 yellow cards. What were the umpires doing or what advice did they give ref. They only see what the want to see. We got plenty of "blind eye" when Kieran Donaghy was being mauled, dragged and gouged. I know its unbecoming to be criticizing refs but its time we called them out. For years we have watched Colm Cooper being subjected to this treatment. Refs could learn a lot from rugby and from the hooter system of timekeeping.

That ref and his gombeen assistants shouldn't be left into a football field again and neither should the Dublin Monaghan ref. GAA HQ and TCB are worse if they don't take action and be seen to take it, otherwise the GAA loses credibility and that hurts in other ways, e.g. lads going off the Oz. As Ambrose said, you have a panel and management giving it their all, travelling the length of the country and then playing in horrific conditions, where the ball wouldn't bounce, and then some nut case of a ref tells a star footballer who has been assaulted that he cannot play anymore. If that band of officials are seen on a pitch again they should be booed home, shame on them for such acts of cowardice and gombeenism, they are getting rewarded elsewhere of course and The GAA needs to wise up. If someone got one of their family in a headlock and dragged 'em around they might learn a lesson. All we want is fair play for all and if we don't get it then the next thing is solicitors will start making personal injury claims and that will be another nail in the coffin of rural GAA clubs and where we already see some sports facilities having to close down because of this.
I cannot understand our kickouts - I attended Dublin vs Tyrone in Omagh last year and purposefully positioned myself on the terrace behind Cluxton. In that one game alone I figured out a good few of his tactics that Shane does't appear to know of. I was no more than 10 yards from him and there was no barriers in my line of sight so I had an amazing close up of things and I think PK & Co need to latch onto this while Clux is still at his peak. It was as much how he did things in addition to what he was doing and now I know some might think I am getting ahead of myself here, but it all made sense when put together - I wouldn't say I have better football brain than is in our camp so as I say, they need to take a look.
For anyone who doubts me, here is one key tactic - from the time the ball goes out of play Clux is gazing over the field of players, they are communicating, moving about and taking note of where the opponents are, what way they are faced/orientated etc, I think Clux doesn't decide on the target until he is actually running up to kick the placed ball. On a number of occasions the target spot is on the path of a run, on one notable occasion James McCarthy was a few yards from anyone, body facing the opposing goals but he was watching Clux, then as Clux runs up to the ball McCarthy makes a run and he is now gone 5-10 yards and hey presto the ball gets him in/at the chest, on one such occasion McCarthy did almost the same thing again in finding the next man and would have kicked it before anyone got to him, and if my memory serves me right I think the fella who received it popped over for a point, it was all done in about 15 seconds. There would be a few making runs so Clux's selection is vital, and the longer the kick the more advance warning the opponent has, making the runs is vital as the opponents are confused. As I said it is how it is done, some might think by this account that I am being childish but as we all know there is very little childish about what Clux does and it is the dynamic of so much happening all over the field when the ball isn't even yet in play that is truly fascinating. In fairness it took me a while to get my head around it all but then again it was the only game where I could get that close as before the Super 8s Championship games were at bigger venues where a spectator couldn't get such a close up view. That was a roaster of a Summers day and I'd be thinking there may be variations for different conditions. That was the same day Tyrone narrowed the field in an attempt to squeeze the Dubs so that might also have influenced Clux.
I'd be very interested to hear what some of our seasoned pundits on here would think of the above account of what is but one aspect of Clux's bag of tricks.
Meanwhile I would recommend anyone to try it for themselves, that is if Dublin play outside Croker. It might also be interesting to explore if and how Clux is passing on his expertise to young pretender Evan Comerford.
Clux has transformed the goal keeper role and by recognising the kick out as possession can be key to the outcome in what is a sport of increasingly tight margins.
One might say that anyone could do what I outlined but it is a very fine line and one slip has it all fall apart, which is why I say it is as much how it is done, from what I could see the success rate was high, worked 4 out of 5 times.
Another aspect was that finding the man worked better with more seasoned players, I senses a telepathy between Clux and James, in one instance towards the end I actually guessed precisely where the ball was going - that I was stood a bit higher up than Clux gave be a better view of the field of players.
Fascinating stuff it is, and as I say, much of it when the ball isn't even in play!
PS More good news for Tyrone- Aussie Rules star Conor McKenna returns to Ireland for indefinite period.
I wonder did he get pushed or did he jump after a cheque book being pulled out?
