Kerry have a great captain this year. Let's hope and pray he stays fit. I see other leaders emerging too. Tommy, Jack Barry and paul Geaney. Forget about the captain issue for now. As Mickey Ned said a few years ago. " there are no 5 year plans in Kerry! The final in September is all that matters, Nothing else"

I wonder is it democracy though. What would interest me is how many clubs actually met and mandated their county board delegate to vote a certain way and if so, did the delegate do what they were told! And how many just let their delegates take a solo run at it. My reading of what Tim Murphy said is that if the nominated person is not playing, then the management decide who the captain is and that it wouldn't just go to the nominated captain's clubmate if he were selected on the team. . According to a report on kerrysportshub a number if delegates indicated they had been mandated by their clubs to vote against the motion. Ah here, you gotta a look at the Jack the lads that were voting against. Scary fairys

GAA Kerry to stick with selecting captain from county champions
Colm Keys
February 04 2020 02:30 AM
Kerry will retain the tradition of allowing the reigning county champions to nominate a captain of the senior team after a vote to leave the decision in the hands of management, failed to get two-thirds backing at a county board meeting last night.
Kerry remain one of two counties - Kilkenny being the other - who still afford that honour to their county champions after a lengthy debate on the Beaufort club's motion seeking change, got a 50-48 majority, but not the two-thirds required to reverse it.
David Clifford was recently appointed captain on the back of East Kerry's success and so far the 21-year-old has carried the honour lightly.
But, in the past, it has been an issue with captains sometimes not making the starting 15 and the motion's proposing club, Beaufort, suggested it was unfair on all concerned and no longer fit for purpose.
County board Chairman Tim Murphy said the motion had the backing of the current team management.
"The current and, indeed, previous management would be in favour of the motion. They feel they have been entrusted to represent Kerry and win All-Irelands. In order to do so, they feel the current system doesn't necessarily allow them the best chance of doing so.
"They were at pains to point out that we are all looking at this through a particular lens. They are at the coalface of the team, from when they start in November. Lots of stuff goes on behind closed doors that nobody has any idea about, stuff that may be going on in the personal lives of players.
"Management, in their opinion, is best placed to be aware of that. They are dealing with the players on a daily and weekly basis, during training, after training and outside of training. That is the primary reason why the management would feel this motion should proceed. It is about having confidence in the people we appoint as managers and management teams."
But tradition mattered too and in the end, with much support from the county's hurling clubs, the status quo remained.

Dissapointed in the result but hardly the end of the world really.
Clifford is our captain and that's all that matters. I wouldnt mind if he was given a break for this one myself. Will o shea be back i wonder?

TCB should have gotten clubs to get this over the ljne, Murphy in Donagal and Cluxton with Dubs works amazing an as will Clifford. It has cost us and may again with games increasingly determined by a kick of the ball. I wonder did the 'me feiners' lobby others? Poor show that they would try shut out a star from a small club, very unGAA, unKerry and unsporting. A good kick in the arse the should get! Why didn't the good guys in Crokes have their say? The comments were well versed, 'we have bigger issues', etc - if you adopt that policy then you end up with a Gombeen culture, the best players in the county should be on the panel, led by the best captain among them -simple as! We will encounter be plenty of obstacles to winning back Sam, so no need to create problems. So so sad that naysayers can get away with this in what many believe to be the greatest Gaelic football county of all, maybe even more would have reason to say it if this decision was reversed and the issue finally put to bed! Whereas I agree with your sentiments and think the management should have the right to name the captain I don't agree with some of your arguements. In particular I struggle to understand how you think anybody is trying to shut out a star from a small club. Problem stems from the pseudo democracy practiced by the GAA - it appears to be a ground up democratic organisation but in reality power exists in cliques within the association (at most levels including at club level). 50 for and 48 against suggests 98 votes - not sure how these break down, i.e. does this translate to 98 clubs each with one vote or do others get to vote? Either way the majority of Kerry clubs are imtermediate and Junior with only 8 senior clubs (or 12 if one takes D1 of the league as the benchmark of big clubs). Theoretically the power sits with the small clubs that you suggest are being shut out. We have had some great captains in recent years from small clubs - Seamus Moynihan, Darren O Sullivan, Declan O Sullivan and Paul Galvin all come to mind. They were nominated by the existing system when divisional sides won the County Championship, the problem actually arises more when a senior club wins the county championship and dont have an obvious cpatain from their ranks. This has been very evident with Crokes in recent years and yet the smaller clubs see fit to maintain the status quo. Issue is the bar stool bueaucrats who vote dont want to give up a right they perceive they have. Small point I know, but by no stretch of the imagination could Paul Galvin be described as a 'great' captain. A great player for many years yes, but definitely not as captain.

Given the storm forcast for the weekend I hope the GAA make a call on this game early. No repeat of Monaghan 2 years ago.

93% chance of rain and winds of 46 miles per hour predicted at the moment. Unlikely to go ahead I would think.

Could they decide to move it to 4pm on Saturday? Would teams object, or would both have to agree?
If postponed, refix for a week later, as 16 Feb is the open week? Valentine's trip to Omagh go across well in many households? Be sure and tell her you'll be going to a match though, as things might take a turn for the worse if she finds out your true motive in selecting Omagh.
A postponement would rest a few lads that need it as well, so that might be the better option at this stage.

Weather up North is grand, on the cold side of crisp, grass has turned from Winter to Spring green signalling the League getting interesting, smell of cut grass is the Championship getting serious!
Great news re McShane though not so great for Jason & Co, still they will get a good grounding that will stand to them later on.
Harder to mark that Clifford but David more magic in possession?
Now what did Tyrone do that we couldn't re Mark O'C I wonder? Has Tadhgeen & Co too much of a grip on our boys?
Sheamus Moynihan is furious that Aussies can cherry pick our best but his solution of paying the GAA for them would probably contravene modern slavery law.
McShane was spectator at Meath game and is now going back training so will hardly show Sunday? Then again ....

Beagley out for a month as well so starting to get light with defensive options. Hope Morley and O'Sullivan are back this week.
I have been following Mayo a good bit during this league and James Horan is blooding some amount of young players. I am starting to feel like we should start throwing the likes of David Shaw, Tony Brosnan etc in the mix to see if they can swim with the big fish. Ideally Paudie Clifford but don't know where he is at currently with injury.
Liam Kearney has been blooded as a midfield option but will be interesting to see how Diarmuid O'Connor develops during the league.
Should be a tough one up there with the weather and the opposition.

The Tyrone star said his new job as a salesman with the building providers was a "big deciding factor" in his decision to reject a two-year deal from the Adelaide Crows. "I'm happy I have clarity now," he told the Irish Independent. Any word on when the GAA might make a call on the weekend fixtures, in view of the weather warnings? It would be nice if they did so pretty soon, especially for teams and supporters who have long distances to travel.

Cathal McShane going no where. Very tight among five teams for the second all Ireland final spot. Dublin to pip the rest and make the final but not get out of jail against us this year. It’s coming home this year and it’s going to be a regular visitor over the next decade.

I am delighted that Cathel McShane is staying even though he may torment us as the year advances.
I notice that he has now been fixed up with a job . It is strange that this did not happen until he horse had almost bolted. Perhaps there are other issues.
On a different topic - will TG 4 cover Sunday’s match?

We won't know who's going to start really until 2 o clock Sunday, but in fairness to Killian Spillane he deserves a run at it too. Liam Kearney is getting a great opportunity in these matches, hope he goes well again.

I guess he is injured again so. F*ck! I'd say he's ok. Hopefully, but you can never be too sure with Jameso. Spillane does deserve a chance though, hopefully Shaw and Tony Brosnan see some game time with him out as Peter doesn't seem too tempted in giving them a run. Gavin White doesn't inspire me with too much confidence as a defender, I can see Graham O' Sullivan keeping his place with Begley or Peter Crowley later in the year pushing him out of the team. Good to see Kearney & Burns get a run, they've both impressed in the first 2 games. I imagine Cathal McShane surely won't be playing for Tyrone yet no.
