Well i was thinking barry and o connor would be given a week off. Jack Barry looked like he was a senior playing in a minor game saturday! Agree re spillane, i would like to see shaw or brosnan get game time aswell

There’s an undeniable feelgood factor about Galway football since Padráic Joyce took charge, but with tougher tasks on the horizon, there were enough holes in this display to ensure their supporters don’t lose the run of themselves.
Whether Galway are going to be able to push on and produce the sort of swashbuckling style that was a hallmark of Joyce’s own game remains to be seen, but what was undeniable at Pearse Stadium was that this was is an invaluable win for the Tribesmen.
They will be on the road to Kerry and Donegal for their next two games, so a scenario where they could be searching for a first win after three games has been avoided. Indeed, they will now embark on those trips with a spring in their step.
It is not quite a free shot in Tralee and Letterkenny, but it has eased the huge pressure heading to each of those bearpits.
“We are not short of character or fight and battle — and the lads are only about 60% fit at this stage — but they showed great heart and passion for the cause, and I’m really pleased with that,” said Joyce.
“It was very important to get the win with a couple of tough away matches coming up. I said it this morning when we met, that the whole thing of the day, no matter whether we played well or not, was to get the two points.”
They didn’t do it the easy way and while they opened up a five-points lead against the breeze early in the second half, they missed the chance to bury Monaghan just after the restart.
“We had a great goal chance with Rob Finnerty after half time, but he just hit it way too hard and it went over the bar,” added Joyce. “And then Shane Walsh missed a free from close range which you would have put your house on, but overall he was outstanding for us as a captain, he led us well and ran himself into the ground and took some serious hits off the ball.
“I’m happy with the two points, but we shouldn’t have come that tight to be just a point ahead, as we were by far the better team all day. It’s a start, it’s a base, it’s the end of January, nothing is won until later in the year but it’s great to get two points early in this tough league.”
Galway led by 1-8 to 0-8 at the break, having played with the breeze in the opening half.

Skipper Walsh and Monaghan’s Conor McManus landed some superb scores, with six players from each side hitting the target during a good opening half.
The key score came after 15 minutes when Walsh and Michael Boyle combined for Finnerty to shoot home the game’s only goal.
But Monaghan were given a glorious chance to cancel it four minutes from the break when Walsh was penalised for fouling Dessie Ward, but McManus’ shot to the left was brilliantly saved by Connor Gleeson.
Galway opened up a five-point lead eight minutes into the second half after Conor McCarthy was black-carded, but Monaghan rallied and struck for five points in a row to level the match with 10 minutes remaining via efforts from Kieran Hughes, McManus, Christopher McGuinness, Jack McCarron, and Aaron Mulligan.
Walsh and McManus traded frees, and then after Damien Comer fisted Galway in front, McGuinness had a shot blocked by full-back Sean Mulkerrin in a crowded goalmouth amid claims that it had gone over the line.
Galway extended their lead when Matthias Barrett pointed a goal chance and while McManus reduced the deficit with his sixth point, McEnaney’s men were unable to come up with an equaliser.

“We missed a couple of opportunities and according to my stats men there was a possible goal disallowed that was a definite goal,” said McEnaney.
“We’d love to have left with a point. I think we’re unlucky that we didn’t come out of it with something, but the one thing that we did come out of it with was fighting spirit, and that’s a very important thing for me to have in our dressing room, for me, the management team, and the players.”

Feeling quiet nervous about this one, Galway seem to be playing with more freedom and attacking spirit since Joyce took over. Player like Shane Walsh was wasted dropping deep, one of the most devestating forwards in the country on his day. We need to target our 3 home games with 3 victories, if we can stop the snappy ball going into Shane Walsh and co. we should have a good chance of coming out with the 2 points but however if we don't get it right on the night than Galway are more than capable of beating us.
Should be an interesting one.

Looking forward to this now with galway returning to their roots should be entertaining. Not on tv which is a pain for me.
This could be high scoring if galway play open then clifford et al will run up a good score.
Be another good test of our backs walsh comer and burke if he plays all pose very different tests and are high quality footballers. By all accounts galways kickouts and mf werent great at the weekend so would be a good game to give Kearney and maybe o brien a run there.
You would expect us to win all things being equal but if pk chooses to give a few new lads a run out and we dont i wouldnt be 2 upset

Will Galway have the Corofin contingent back for this game? Is that just one or two? Ian Burke, Martin Farragher and Liam Silke started for Galway in the 4th round qualifier against mayo last summer. Kieran Molloy came on as a sub. Up until that game Kevin Walsh was only starting Ian Burke and this was controversial in Galway. It will be interesting to see if Padraig Joyce brings in any more. |

They named their team last Tuesday night as well and there was one change to the starting 15 last Sunday with Flynn the midfielder losing out. Flynn didn't feature at all against Monaghan so may well be injured. I think Galway might be a bit short on the midfielder front which is possibly why Steede was named in the starting 15 this week. Wouldn't be surprised to see more of the Corofin crew on the bench Saturday night.

I know he has been with the juniors the last few years but if he wasn't the answer in 2014 I don't think he is the answer now. Hopefully Daniel O'Brien gets called into the squad. Any other defenders that might break into the squad this year? We could badly do with a few more. |

Also defensively we have tom sull Sherwood white and peter crowley to come back in.whats the story with potts tom leo and rob wharton are they not involved?

I see Potts are potentially a Paul Murphy type players - great ball player but would be in trouble against physical forwards. Graham O Sullivan, Daniel O Brien and the returning Peter Crowley are my hopes in terms of players to make a real push for first 15 championship inclusion by the end of the league. |

I think we need more in defence than last year & like you said, Daniel O’Brien & Graham O’Sullivan are two I would like to see more of - Graham I hope will push his case in the league & nail down a starting berth for the championship; Daniel O’Brien is a guy who has great potential & I hope he can stay injury free for the foreseeable - I would see him strangely enough as a possible midfielder given his athleticism- think he is not the tightest of markers, the freedom of midfield could really suit him. Regarding the others, Tom Leo didn’t make UCD Sigerson team, can’t really see him stepping up; Potts needs to bulk up and has the potential, Wharton I only saw in the county championship last year & feels he has a long way to go. Cian Gammell is a guy I would like to see in a senior panel - strong, pacey & familiar with the last line of defence. |

I see Damien Comer is back for Galway. Hopefully kerry do a good man marking job on him. A dangerous boy. Galway looked good the last day. From the highlights I saw anyway.

Similar team to the last day, assuming Spillane and Ó Beaglaíoch are both ruled out I have Kearney and Graham Sullivan instead. Also I would like to see if Tony can bring his form of the last 2 years for Crokes into a Kerry jersey, if Peter doesn't play him in these type of matches than he'll have a tough job making championship panel.
Need a quick defender for Shane Walsh and a sticky one at that and for me Jason Foley best fits. I'd have either Morley or Enright on Comer as I'd imagine the reason he's centre forward is to use the mark rule to his benefit so we need one of our stronger defenders on him.
Should be a cracker, I can see this being an enjoyable game if it stays dry.
