Given the figures that are being banded about (€100/150 per training session) I can assume we can all agree that the GAA is amateur in name only. There was a time we all sold lotto tickets/held draws/ran race nights etc and the proceeds went towards club equipment or maintenance of the ground etc. Now we can no longer get an ex player to manage his own club for a year or two and we at flat out fundraising to finance a big name from outside the club to manage the senior team.

There are going to be exceptions in the smaller clubs and also one would imagine --- like the big counties --- that the bigger clubs can attract managers.

Lets not get carried away with the idea of the amateur ethos and corinthian spirit as there are plenty of people employed by the GAA full time and we have no objection with that. Clubs are paying managers as they are looking to get people who are skilled in coaching or management rather than having a local lad call down to smoke fags at training while lads do endless laps.
Paying managers happens and I would much prefer that people with skills are paid for their time and effort rather than relying on the idea that we all maintain this amateur ideal and never evolve. Clubs teams are demanding more quality and more expertise so it is a natural progression toward having more specialists coaching and developing players.
If we are to have a gripe about the GAA then lets address the club fixtures rather than throwing mud at people who are out toiling on wet pitches day in/ day out trying to develop our young players and keep them interested in the game.

No more amateur there’s div 5 teams paying that toniutside managers and same clubs would expect the local fella to do it for nothing that’s the problem

Think Mark Fitzgerald with Kerry minors and Ray Walsh taking Rahillys. Won a minor and u21 chance with them.

Think Mark Fitzgerald with Kerry minors and Ray Walsh taking Rahillys. Won a minor and u21 chance with them. Mark will be fully occupied with Kerry minors for sure but also heard that Ray Walsh not putting his name forward for consideration- looks like they will have to go outside club with Maurice Horan now in Laois & Declan Quill staying involved with Kerry ladies.
