Donie Buckley isn’t a bad idea as manager but it would be ideal if one of the candidates approached him directly and really wanted to work him and give him control of the trainings. Let Buckley focus on the coaching and have the manager selecting the players and so on. If I was one of the names I listed earlier I’d definitely be approaching Buckley.
Jerry O’Sullivan is another option alright. He’s had success with East Kerry but it’s hard to judge him on that because the level of talent available to EK is a completely different standard to their competition.

Pretty sure Donie Buckley gave an interview a while back saying he had no interest in being a manager.

Afternoon to you all. I been reading this forum for years and years but only decided the start voicing my opinion. Fingers crossed I will be able to contribute and add to the topics posted.
The way the county board is structured we have amassed a good few with development squad experience. There is serious pressure in this U20 role and a good few learned gaa man have failed to their attempt to bridge the gap to 2008. Jack O’Conner, Dara Sè, Eamon Fitz and now John Sugrue have left the role empty handed.
Personally I think it is a role that should be seen as a stepping stone for both players and possible coaches. Ok so what name should be considered: John Galvin, Gary McGrath, Tomas Hanafin, Jimmy Keane, John Connell, Liam Brosnan, Brendan Whelan, Harry O'Neill have all been active at development or college level, Then there is the new breed finding their feet, the likes of O’Shea, Heasman and minor boss James Costello. Michael Quirke, Declan Sullivan, Marc O’Sè and one man making serious strides is Sean O'Sullivan. Two men that have impressed me at County Championship level are Jerry O’Sullivan and St. Pats Seamus Murphy who has really brought on Brendans with the assistance of Pat Driscoll.
Ex Rockies bosses Wayne Quinlivan, Kirby and Stephen Stack could be dark horses.
I think Sean Bàn could be worth a look at some capacity ... I would love the co board to bring Michael Quirke back on board, I have trained under Mike a good few times and sat a fair few of his seminars/sessions.. extremely knowledgeable on plays and tactics.
But like I said above, I think it is a role that should be seen as a stepping stone for both players and possible coaches.

One name I've heard from a few sources is Tomás Ó Sé is being looked at by the Kerry County board after guiding the Glanmire minor footballers to back to back Cork Minor County Championships. I'm aware he has been given the job of the senior team there for 2021 but I'm sure if he was approached he would consider it hard. His profile is exactly what we need, a passionate Kerry man who wears his heart on his sleeve and has a record (albeit a fairly low key one) of success with underage teams. I'd be all for Tomás as Kerry U20 manager.

I'd be all for Tomás as Kerry U20 manager. Whilst I too can see the great advantageous of having someone with passion for the jersey like Tomás has i do believe he is a small bit unproven for that leap. Take someone like Aidan Cahill he has won four Minor Championships with East Kerry in the last 4 years. two of them were as a selector under Seamo and two as the manager of the team. I believe Aidan was also involoved with the U20's as a physical trainer this year. Therefore, Aidan has won the same amount as titles as a manger as Tomás but also has won 2 minor championships as a selector and having been involved with the 20s this year along with the Kerry development squads, would he not be considered around the same standard as Tomás (with the obvious exception of never playing for Kerry). But he does however host more experience, someone like him will never come into the talks as a kerry u20 manager because he does not have the "name". But he might have a better CV then some of these past players being mentioned.

Appointment of next U-20 manager could be Murphy's most important final act Jerry O'Sullivan prior to the 2019 Kerry County Senior Club Football Championship Final match between East Kerry and Dr. Crokes at Austin Stack Park in Tralee, Kerry. Photo by Brendan Moran/Sportsfile 1 Jerry O'Sullivan prior to the 2019 Kerry County Senior Club Football Championship Final match between East Kerry and Dr. Crokes at Austin Stack Park in Tralee, Kerry. Photo by Brendan Moran/Sportsfile Paul Brennan November 25 2020 06:30 AM It remains to be seen whether or not Kerry win an All-Ireland senior football title under Tim Murphy's watch, with the Kerry GAA chairman's five-year term in charge due to conclude at the end of 2021.
If Sam Maguire doesn't make its way to the Kingdom next year, it will remain a stone in Murphy's shoe that he will be the first county board chairman in living memory not to have seen an All-Ireland senior football title won while in office. Nevertheless, given Dublin's dominant position in the game right now, there should be no shame in that for the Kerry chairman; if Dublin - as most people expect - retain the Sam Maguire this year and next, Murphy will be just another one of several dozen county board chairmen and women who won't have seen the All-Ireland title come to their county under their time in office.
Come what may on the football field in 2021, Tim Murphy's legacy as Kerry GAA chairman will stand tall and proud long after this present group of Kerry footballers have retired from playing: the Centre of Excellence in Currans. As the chairman who got that impressive project over the line, as well as being the Board's Development Officer when plans for the Centre were in its infancy, Murphy must take huge credit for what is now established in Currans.

“It is thought the process to replace Sugrue could be concluded before Christmas and sources close to the County Board are speculating that it could well be a former, recently retired senior inter-county player who could step up to the role.”
From Kerry’s Eye. Declan O’Sullivan would have to be first in line out of the recently retired players. I think he is the most likely candidate out of everyone. Jerry O’Sullivan probably second most likely. I’d be fairly surprised if the manager isn’t one of those 2.

As inter county positions come through political means I would favour the likes of Aiden O Mahoney or Fiona Fitzgerald. Back to Dublin hammering teams that’s what true championship do, they take no prisoners and if teams want to beat them they must work twice as hard.

Fair enough if he doesn't want to be a manager, but he then can't expect to have a big say in how the team is picked, if you believe what's said this is something he wants to do, and then not have to take stick if it doesn't work out.

Whoever will be appointed would want to be getting the job fairly soon. I believe the 20s had started training by this time last year. But, they would have to be really considering they would have a month or more of trials to get a training panel dwindled down and this Championship scheduled to be getting underway in February if the same timing as last season.

You would think the GAA would have made the decision about going with club first in 2021 by now.

Was talking to omeone about this recently and can anyone confirm this. Was Fergal O Se and one of Mickos sons the Kerry Under 21 manager during the mid 2000's? One for them for the game in 2007 when Kerry lost to Clare?

Also, not sure about Fergal O’Se.

Was John Evens and or Charlie Nelligan also the manager at some point do you recall?

I do not recall Charlie being in charge of the u21 team. He did manage the minors for a couple of years. Similarly, I do not recall John Evans being in charge. He did manage Tipperary at that level.
Darragh O’Se managed them for a couple of years.

John Evans managed the u21s around 2000, Jack O Connor had a stint then . Charlie Nelligan followed him 2004 I’d say. John O Dwyer Had a go, John Kennedy, Sean Geaney, Daragh, Eammon Fitz, Jack Again, John Sugrue, Declan. Possibly missing someone along the way.
