HOME»SPORT Clifford has last word as East Kerry leave O’Rahilly’s feeling blue
By Jordan Murphy Sunday, October 06, 2019 - 11:38 PM East Kerry 0-20 3-9 Kerins O’Rahilly’s An epic encounter in Tralee, adorned by stunning displays on both sides — none more so than Kerin’s O’Rahilly’s David Moran.
Learn more However it was his inter-county colleague David Clifford who provided the decisive contributions in extra-time as East Kerry prevailed against their crestfallen opponentsfrom Tralee.
The Strand Road side lost captain and key inside forward Barry John Keane to a straight red card early in the second period following an off-the-ball incident, and that cost Mike Quirke’s side dearly.
But if club sides are supposed to have the edge in terms of team spirit, no-one told East Kerry, who looked in trouble at several junctures, but kept their nerve to forced extra-time — and allow Clifford add a pair of winning points.
Strand Road, inspired by the brilliant fielding of David Moran and superb play from Tommy Walsh on the edge of the square, had the dream start, with a goal from Keane in the opening minute.
Things quickly went from bad to worse for East Kerry: Karl Mullins (10) and Jack Savage (14) also netted and O’Rahilly’s had raced 3-2 to 0-4 clear by end of the opening quarter.
But Clifford, Mike Foley, and Ronan Buckley had closed the gap to 3-2 to 0-9 at half-time.
East Kerry had a gilt-edged chance to equalise. They were awarded a penalty early in the second-half, but O’Rahilly’s goalkeeper, Gary Kissane, denied Paudie Clifford.
The tempo began to rise when Clifford converted a long-range free and the gap was down to one. O’Rahilly’s responded with points from Savage and Walsh, to lead 3-4 to 0-10 with 13 minutes remaining.
But scores from Clifford (2), Foley, and Liam Kearney edged East Kerry a point clear with two minutes of normal time remaining.
Ryan Carroll and Tommy Walsh gave O’Rahilly’s the lead again, before Shane Cronin popped up to force extra-time. Both sides added three points in the opening period of extra-time, with Clifford and Moran landing sensational scores (3-9 to 0-18).
Rahilly’s then recorded three wides, before Clifford sealed the deal for East Kerry, with two late points.

Great report veteranEast Kerry 0-20 Kerins O'Rahillys 3-9 AET 0-15 3-6 FT This was a humdinger. As an OAP, I invested E8 and my outlay was returned with compound interest. It did not look as if matters would transpire in this manner after about the first ten minutes when it seemed that it was raining Strand Road goals as they played into the Mithchell's end. Tommy Walsh, who was winning everything against Jack Sherwood at that stage, set up BJK for one , Jack Savage stroked in another and Karl Mullins, who had a fine game before being cramped off, motored up from CHB to crack home a third. No way back surely for East Kerry. There was and remarkably that happened without them scoring a goal. A goal or two nearly did come for them in that opening half. Young David scored one but was whistled back without any protest and he later cut menacingly in acutely from the left but had his shot smothered by Gary Kissane. One worried for them after that but they kept plugging away and had the deficit reduced to two points by half time. Paudie Clifford was a huge threat in that half , constantly and tirelessly powering through even though his efforts did not always get the rewards they deserved. Early in the second half an incident took place which in my view had a crucial impact on the game. BJK went off with what looked like a serious shoulder injury. He was patched up and resumed play at about the same time as a penalty was awarded to East Kerry at the Mitchell's end which meant the referee was up in that area. Now, I did not see what happened as BJK came back on with my gaze fixed on the penalty incident. A man next to me, a neutral, proclaimed that he saw the incident- as BJK came back on an East Kerry player lunged at his injured shoulder and BJK struck out resulting in the East Kerry man going down prostrate where he lay until BJK got his red and then naturally enough a miraculous recovery was enacted. If this version is true then the East Kerry man's actions were despicable but I suppose more common than we like to believe. Either way BJK was a huge loss. Up to that he was very lively as he usually is and would surely have returned a couple of points as he usually does. Fate did go the way of Strand Road after that incident because Paudie Clifford had his penalty saved by Gary Kissane. Down to fourteen men , one expected the wheel of fortune to swing away from Strand Road but heroic displays from some of their players ensured that this contest was going to be fierce to the end and indeed even with that numerical disadvantage it appeared that they would still stagger through. Not least of those heroic figures was the mighty David Moran. He was the dominant midfielder , the dominant player overall, and for a man of his size he defied the laws of physics with the number of breaks he collected and his equalising point at the end of the first part of extra time when he thundered through and bisected the uprights was possibly the most memorable score of the match, and there were many. He was well supported by the likes of Ryan Carroll, Karl Mullins, John Ferguson, a smart CHF, Con Barrett, Jack Savage, Tommy Walsh and Gavin O'Brien who looked hugely impressive at times. Unfortunately for Strand Road , apart from the discrepancy in playing numbers , they were opposed by a team who also contained top of the range , defiant men of war. Jack Sherwood, after a shaky start against Tommy Walsh, came more and more into the game and repeatedly drove forward penetratively , as is his wont. Those two boys had a fine duel. Dan O'Donoghue was a very capable wing back and at midfield, Liam Kearney, in spite of the exploits of David Moran , was a solid figure. I like the cut of that fellow. His partner , Shane Cronin, was no slouch either. Up front impressive players were Ronan Buckley , Paudie Clifford, started off well, faded for a while but finished very strongly, Dara Roche , at times , sub Mike Foley came on and scored three or four points. Then of course there was wonder boy. He kicked four from frees and four from play. A couple of those from play were from another world. Crucially he got the last two scores of this epic. One from a free to give his team the lead and then the clincher shortly afterwards from play which was kicked from outer space. I felt the referee could have been a little more generous to him in that there were a couple of occasions when clear fouls were ignored. When they wake up this morning , Kerins O'Rahillys will be wondering how they left this one after them after such a blistering opening. Indeed , any fair minded neutral would have to feel a tinge of sympathy for them but there is one cold , harsh statistic which might explain their loss. East Kerry got twenty scores while Strand Road managed just twelve. Perhaps that is the clue. P.S. Whoever designed the colour scheme for the St. Brendan's jeerseys should be brought up before a commission for crimes against humanity. Those jerseys are an assault on the eyes and of course, needless to say, the numbers are totally illegible.

Who won out in Killarney today? Kierans won, 0-21 to 1-13. What does this mean for Kilcummin, is their senior status in peril? Quarter finals are all potentially good games.

Saturday looks like being a day for throwing logs on the fire. Two big rugby matches in the morning, two Kerry club matches at tea time and a childrens pantomime live from the House of Commons.

Kerry footballer facing Winning Streak dilemma on Saturday October 14, 2019
East Kerry's Mike Foley in action for Kerry minors in 2015 and inset next week's Winning Streak players! A club footballer in Kerry will have to choose between playing in a county SFC quarter-final or going on Winning Streak on Saturday.
East Kerry's Mike Foley has been drawn to take part in the popular RTE Saturday night game show where he stands to win a minimum of €10,000. However, as the show is pre-recorded in RTE's Donnybrook studios on Saturday afternoon, it clashes with East Kerry's Kerry SFC quarter-final against Dingle in Killarney, leaving Mike with a dilemma on his hands.
AD
The Spa clubman and former All-Ireland minor winner kicked four points for the divisional side in their third round win over Kerins O'Rahilly's and the expectation is that he will play the game and send a family member to Dublin to represent him on Winning Streak.

Dingle will not rely on one on one marking - expect them to defend in numbers and break from the back. Potential to be an excellent game. Both sides had narrow wins over KOR in their last outings this year and their "battle" last year is still relatively fresh in the memory - hopefully the sideline is better marshalled this year. Close game but think E Kerry may shade it.
I fancy St Brendans to take Legion and Crokes and South Kerry to be the other semi finalists.
