Good observations Veteran. I really think we are lacking a hard edge in defence - all fine footballers and all good going forward - but we need a couple of teak-tough lads to stay at home and mind the house. Ronan Shanahan is definitely in this mould and I was bewildered to see him being dropped from the panel. Likewise Gavin O Brien looked to me to be the most likely guy to be able to change a game for us off the bench....
I hope Adrian does well - but based on what I saw in the league I have my doubts. JoD needs to prove he can still take lads on 1 v 1 - has not done it in a long time.
I know nothing about Wharton - what type of player is he? From the minors a few years ago Kearney from Beaufort really impressed me - I believe he is on the panel - again he struck me as a guy who could really take hold of a game and turn it on.

Meathexile, I think you maybe confusing Liam Kearney from Spa with Liam Carey form Beaufort. Both were good underage players . Not sure about their current status.

Shanahan's propensity for picking up yellow/black cards is probably too much of a risk for management; have watched him play a good few games for Stacks in the past few years and have seen him depart before half time in county championship games and town league games. This year in the opening league of the season he played second fiddle to Kevin McCarthy - he was good in the subsequent club championship games but walked on two yellows in the penultimate game - he had his hands full in the final game in Kenmare when faced by Seán O'Shea. Wharton is a wing back who likes to attack - not sure if he can retain his place in the panel when Murphy returns. Gavin O'Brien has had a start/stop campaign since the league final, only featuring once for Kerins O'Rahillys in the club championship, missing out on the two other games due to injury - he played a half in the league game recently vs Rathmore. I would like Kerry management when announcing teams to advise who was not considered due to injury - would clear up some of the confusion out there regarding players being dropped etc.

On paper that is a fairly ragged looking defence and midfield but presumably the hands of management, to an extent, were tied by injuries. The forwards are close to being our best available but the substitute bench does not suggest we will be finishing with our strongest fifteen! Only the most rabid supporters expects us to win it outright this year. It would seem the best we can hope for is the gaining of experience for a lot of pretenders and the judicious use by management of the best players that are available to us. In that context, I despair when our new management retain and recycle the likes of Mark Griffin, Jonathan Lyne and Michael Geaney. These boys, significant club players, have been tried and tried again and have repeatedly demonstrated that they simply are not senior intercounty footballers. This may seem a brutal assessment but it is the way I see it. Shane Enright has been a reasonably competent corner back in the NFL and in Munster but later in the year in Croke Park at this stage of his career? I wonder. Conversely, where are the likes of Ronan Shanahan and Gavin O'Brien. Ronan is not in any way flamboyant and will not "bomb forward", rather he is a tight marking, old style defender with a bit of attitude and an edge. He gets full value for any free he concedes. Gavin is raw and green but he made a big impression in the NFL. Of course, it maybe that these lads are injured or not interested but they are the types of guys we should be included rather than lugging around fellows who have been repeatedly tried. I presume Dara Moynihan and Tomas O'Shea are still injured. In view of Clare's dismal effort against Waterford one would expect a Kerry victory. But those of us who went to Ennis two years ago have not forgotten that we trailed by a point or two in the second half when Clare crashed one against the crossbar. Had it gone in, with the locals smelling blood, we could have been sent on a tour of the highways and byways of Ireland. This game is ideal territory for Clare playing at home against a lot of Kerry novices. On the other hand, sufficient ball to our forwards could result in mayhem. In any case let us avoid red cards and any further injuries. Ok Veteran while I agree with you on Griffin, Mikey Geaney and Lyne but is there any chance you could come on with a positive post every now and then. Also time to get Ronan Shanahan out of your head. You obviously haven’t seen him play for his club over the last 12 months where he has been poor in their County Championship games. He got an absolute roasting off Paul Geaney last year in the quarter final. I think Geaney scores 2-5 that day. That’s hardly County man standard. The management obviously pick the team as they see best and also to play to system.

I think it's a brave selection.
No disrespect to Clare or presumption of victory but the result should go our way. With that in mind management must use every opportunity available to mould a team. Everyone in this forum has been screaming about players going through unchallenged. This is the most physical half back line I have seen in a long time. If they break up the fluency of the attacks the fast full back line will mop up. A bit surprised to see Enright in the half back line at this stage - he must be doing well in training.
Peter likes to operate with a 2 man full forward line. Diarmuid O'Connor will be given a deep role because of his great long range foot passing ability. Five forwards will be enough. After that decisions to be made on the hoof -Spillane to help defence or maybe stay at midfield with Diarmuid if Moran is not fully up to inter county speed.

This game is ideal territory for Clare playing at home against a lot of Kerry novices. On the other hand, sufficient ball to our forwards could result in mayhem. In any case let us avoid red cards and any further injuries. It would be rare that outside observers and management agreed 100% and the disputes that amount to 3 lads either way is a small enough contention and maybe that management have a different perspective is the difference. That I myself on the face of it agree with Vet is probably a kiss of death for his contention, as I couldn't pick a darts team let alone a football team. As regards us claiming Sam, it will take some bold calls. Most wanted Éamonn out yet most now agree that it takes time for the pipeline to have manned up and which is all it will take. Where are the Sinead 'when are you resigning' Kissanes' now?, those who castigated Fitzy on the eve of a vital contest going into enemy territory with our backs to the wall and where such unsporting support by wans of our own could well have cost us a place in an AI final? - Back to Vet - I recall wise owls saying Dwyer was mad to play 'Horse' Kennelly, 'he wouldn't get his place in a month of Sundays.' Maybe, hopefully, the ones Vet doubts are on the verge of making that breakthrough and the others Vet believes is are next behind them?, and that combined that is something to look forward to. Meanwhile I would focus on reporting on the facts that we see in games as opposed to speculating that maybe management should do what we think, us keyboard warriors! Ah here's a bit from Tomás O'6 that might help us out here:"Like, Kerry have an unbelievably talented forward line. But I maintain they need to put one dog in there at wing-forward. By dog, I don’t mean to be insulting. I mean a player willing to sacrifice himself for the greater good. That man, for me, is probably Michael Geaney. Maybe not somebody who’ll spread fear in the opposition, but a man who’ll bring that hard edge to complement the silky skills around him." The reality is that the future is probably brighter than ever and what makes it even brighter is that there is a number of other counties emerging in what is a 'sporadic cycle' in the words of one Paul Galvin. The best thing we can hope for is that the maximum number of games are 'matches', not games where one is no match for the other, and for that we need look no further that our sister code that is hurling. Just imagine what that current environment is doing for future generations of hurling and that is what will keep it to the forefront regardless of Sky high bucks -class cannot be bought. As regards the undertones with Timmy here and Vet, we need to distinguish between poetic license of the 'poetry in motion' type, i.e. action, as opposed to 'poetry in emotion', i.e. us hurlers in the ditch, i.e Action speaks louder than words, and that's from a self-confessed man of words! And as regards sully making a slip, 1 in 5k comments, give us a break, a hero of this forum, if that is the standard (and which it clearly isn't!) the we could think of a few who should be barred for using the forum as a companion in a lonely hearts club - Michael Healy-Rae said as much on The Late Late tonight! And if anyone disagrees with me on this point, just ignore me, you have better things to be doing!

This game needs to be put away early...definitely send a sign that this is a serious team on a quest in 2019.
It will tell us as much about the management team and their style/progress/preparation/motivation as it will about the players.
Show us what you are made of in Ennis...and if we are ready for bigger things.
We'll be behind you all the way.

Get in, get the win, get out.
One small step for each player, another step in the development of the team and management.
Clare will bring physicality. Our boys need to overcome the physicality in this match because there’s a lot more on the road ahead. I’m sure Clare and other teams will use their own skills plus brawn ( a plus for them) to nullify us.
Peter Crowley is going to be a big loss because his defiance and never say die attitude lifts team and supporters alike. Time so for others to step up to the mark and send out a message that this team are fighters and not just classy footballers. Winning is in this bunch’s genes and that includes management. This evening could be the start of a beautiful journey. An Ríocht abú.

With the best of respect Timmy with inane sweeping comments like that it’s patently obvious that you haven’t seen him in every Stacks game either. He was outstanding in last year’s County League campaign and is a complete revelation playing half back in this year’s Club championship - he is a genuine scoring threat and his astute carrying of the ball at pace is a huge asset. fo He wasn’t on Paul G for all of the match you quoted as he came out the field for a good portion , but in any event , you quote one match as proof ..... magnificent analysis !. I’m not making the point for one minute that he should be on the County panel at present ( personally I believe that he is playing , by far, the best football of his life from the half back line ) but if you have seen all the Stacks games ( the only way you could possibly make your sweeping generalization ) then you can only be a Rockie supporter ..... and , if so, washing your dirty linen/ views in public on one of your own is a strange way of showing “ support”.
Whether he should be in the panel or not is not the issue here, downing one man’s displays over the entirety of one whole year when , to have done so, you would have to be either a fellow clubman( see above for opinion of that behaviour if you are ) or a supporter who picks them out every weekend to follow as opposed to following your own club ....which , of course, you might be the .001% outlier that does. Everyone is entitled to an opinion , but as the Mod’s say , keep it far and clean.

O Only the most rabid supporters expects us to win it outright this year. It would seem the best we can hope for is the gaining of experience for a lot of pretenders and the judicious use by management of the best players that are available to us. Peter Canavan: 'Forget the noise, Kerry can challenge Dublin this year - and here's why' Keane's young guns are certainly tomorrow's team, but they can challenge Dubs this year Peter Canavan May 31 2019 2:30 AM There was a certain irony for me in the analysis of Kerry's league final defeat to Mayo. For the most part, Kerry had blazed their way through the league, underlining their status as football's coming team, but Mayo in Croke Park with national silverware on the table was seen as their first day in big school. When it came to it, it was pointed out that they couldn't quite hold on to one of the most physical and streetwise teams around. Some of the reaction was that their naivety had been exposed, their inexperience shown up, and that final was offered as proof that they weren't yet ready to fly at the highest altitude. Funnily enough, that was the exact opposite impression I left Killarney with after the first round of the league back in late January. Despite fielding an inexperienced team, Kerry set the tone and dictated the terms of engagement. They never really let Tyrone off the bus. It was like they made a point that day: they were inexperienced, sure, but they weren't going to lie down for anyone. I was in Killarney the night before that game at a function with Séamus Moynihan. The talk was that this team are the men of tomorrow. There was a general acceptance that Peter Keane would need time, but I think they showed enough in the league to make a case for them to develop much sooner and challenge the Dubs. They have talented young players who know what it is to win coming into the mix alongside more seasoned men like David Moran, Stephen O'Brien, Paul Murphy and Paul Geaney. They reached the league final effectively without their Dr Crokes players and in the process solved one of the most glaring problems Kerry had last year in terms of their defensive set-up. Last season they conceded 10 goals in seven matches in the top flight. This term they had cut that back to 4-80, the joint lowest in the top flight and well below Monaghan's tally of 8-90, despite the Farney men's reputation as a much more defensively solid team. They lost out to Mayo twice, including the final, but I wonder how different the conversation would be had David Clifford's first-half goal been allowed to stand or had the Fossa star managed to palm that late effort past Rob Hennelly. If Kerry and Keane emerged from their first spring together as league champions I think the mood around this team would be very different indeed. Now, they are far from the finished article. Jack Sherwood has operated as a full-back and he's done well, but teams will know that's not the position where he has played most of his football and he'll be tested severely as the summer rolls on. The loss of Peter Crowley for the year is also a bitter blow. He combined a hard edge and physicality in defence that they'll miss. ADVERTISEMENT Their best defenders absolutely love bombing forward. Gavin White and Tom O'Sullivan are excellent at turning defence into attack, but sometimes they have got that balance wrong and left themselves open. Part of that issue comes from midfield. With so many attack-minded defenders they don't always get enough cover from their midfield pairing. Keane and his management team have a puzzle to solve there. Moran and Jack Barry appear to be the strongest option, but are similar in that they love getting forward and someone has to be prepared to mind the house. Moran missed the league final; Kerry missed his bulk and experience. They struggled in the middle third, but I think Mayo will beat most teams there. They worked off maybe 40pc possession, but I still come back to the point that they had a chance to win the game. Finally, the biggest reason I fancy this Kerry team is because it takes class forwards to win an All-Ireland and they have that in spades. They can hurt you in so many ways. One of their goals in their defeat of Dublin in the league came from a long, diagonal ball in. At other times they run it through the hands of the likes of Tom O'Sullivan and Murphy. We've also seen them kick long to Clifford. Clifford, Seán O'Shea and Geaney would get in any team. After that Keane needs to find the players who will do the spade work. He's spoiled for choice, but must get the balance right. I don't envy him in that regard. Diarmuid O'Connor, Dara Moynihan, Stephen O'Brien, Micheál Burns, Gavin O'Brien and others all have claims for starting spots. And that's before mentioning ex-Footballer of the Year James O'Donoghue and what Tommy Walsh can offer off the bench. Kerry will learn from that league final. O'Shea was wrapped up that day, but you'd think they wouldn't let that happen to him again. Games like that will always make good footballers better. They play Clare tomorrow. Colm Collins has done a good job with limited resources, but they are a victim of a system here that doesn't give them much of a chance. The qualifiers is where they'll have to take their opportunity. As for Kerry? They'll use their two games in Munster to improve, but it will be the 'Super 8s' before we see their true potential. From there they can go anywhere. Irish Independent

Peter Canavan is not an attention seeker like Spillane and Brolly.
For this season Management must lay down the law that finishing a game with 15 men in the big games in vital.
Against Mayo in 2017, Peter Crowley got two yellows Against Galway in 2018, Killian got a straight red.
Kerry were well in both games till those incidents occurred.
As soon as Kerry went a man down, the option to retain possession from kickouts (from both keepers) swung dramatically to Mayo and Galway due to having a spare man..... and Kerry could never save the games from that possession.

There is no doubt that Peter Canavan is probably , alongside Daire O’Cinneide , the sharpest of all the former players commentating on football at the moment. I read that article and of course it lifted my spirits. For Kerry to beat Dublin this year so many things, perhaps too many, have to fall into place . No injuries , certainly not to key players, no cards , certainly not to key players, impartial refereeing , certainly against Dublin, Then can we match Dublin’s kickout strategy, gain parity at midfield, bring on subs of equal quality when and if the game is there to be snatched. There are a lot of imponderables there , a lot of conundrums.
But as my dear friend Leonard Cohen might say , first we take Manhattan , I mean Clare!

Dublin must be only delighted to have this idea instilled in everybody else that they're invincible. It's a loser mentality that can only lead to failure and it's an affront to our tradition when you hear it promulgated by Kerry folk. Remember after 2012 when Donegal were never going to lose again, or so we were told. Take Kilkenny some years back. Or Kerry in 82 for that matter. The truth is nobody's unbeatable and nobody ever has been in any sport in any era. Time to start believing.

That's all we do here really Maybe we should more try to anticipate rather than speculate, the former being more evidence based and of course that is thinner on the ground with 'closed door training.' Vet is a pro but with respect IMO, how can anyone offer critique when we really don't know what we are talking about. I always thought Ronan was a star in the making and maybe, maybe he just needs a bit of space at the moment. Living outside the county I see the stand out differences we have and there are few enough issues in how we go about our business and by that I mean in all respects. The standard is rocketing and what hurlers in the ditch seem to forget is that there is always going to be 15 trying to stop our lads, and while I may be stating the obvious, it is often a simple fact that we overlook in our haste to 'be right', men's egos, etc, and I am not excluding myself when the heat is on. I must set aside a moment to read what Canavan has to say above, moreover as a trusted objective colleague believes we will turn the Dubs over this year - his last word was 'they won't be beaten until they are beaten', if you get his drift? Ah yes re sully, I'd wipe the whole thing clean, let's nip the nit picking in the bud!

Timmy is from Tarbert, it is very easy to recognise what part of Veteran's post upset him.

Where are we getting the idea that this is a group of youths. Nine of the starting 15 and 5 of the subs will be 25 or older this year! I think our full strength team would have Ryan, Foley, Tom O’Sullivan, White, Moynihan or Burns, O’Shea, Clifford and possibly Diarmuid O’Sullivan all under 25 along with Gavin Crowley and Jack Barry who are 25 this year. That is a very young team by inter county standards. I can’t think of another county fielding such an inexperienced group. Even some of the older lads who have come in like Sherwood, Spillane, Crowley and Gavin O’Brien have virtually no championship experience. Hopefully they can grow together in to an effective group. That canavan article certainly should give us some hope. I didn’t realise our defensive record was the best in Division 1, all while missing several key players.

Kerry beginning to find their groove, 1-09 to 0-03 @ h/t; Clifford & Jameso look dangerous, 1-04 between them - Clifford made the goal for James. Defence not under any great pressure as Clare playing 12/13 behind the ball, Gavin Crowley under pressure from Gary Brennan. David Moran black carded fir a deliberate leg trip, Mark Griffin in at midfield.
