I think it should have been a yellow.
He was stepped.
Sunday Game panel on balance calling it a red.

Tipp heading for the gap with that second goal now from SC I'd say!

The rules seem to be you can hit a fella across the face guard with your hurl and not even get a yellow card. No such rule exists. Lads often get a belt of a hurley when attempting a blockdown and its not a foul. Is that what you are talking about

The final didn’t live up to the build up. Roll on 1/9

KK could have had 2 goals early on.
Was it the corner forward for Tipp that got in that hook to stop a certain goal.
Tipp needed the brave-heart, Paudie Maher to show leadership and his mighty fetch and drive set up the first goal and suddenly Tipp were a new team.
Its amazing what goals do to a team.
I think Tipp would have won it anyway after than but the red card ruined the contest.
Did Adrian Mullen get any touch? No place for a man who is not right. He will be a great one yet.
Limerick will be sick tonight but they must work on their efficiency in score taking.
Cork and Tipp are in the u20 final.
No fear of Tipp dominating the game like KK although they could if they wanted but you get the feeling they live they way they hurl, spontaneous and off the cuff. Their skill level is ridiculous at times.
Wexford were very close too.

It was a shame that the red card was needed because it was very even at that stage, indeed I was leaning towards Kilkenny up to that. In spite of the Tipp goal Kilkenny were bringing their usual frenetic and claustrophobic intensity giving the “wristy” Tipp little room to flash their artistry. We will never know how things would have panned out without the red card. It was the crucial act of the game but in my view was a clear cut red. One could see the Tipperary player’s head jerk back with the impact.
From a general point of view it goes to show once more that all the punditry in the world counts for nothing when the unanticipated happens like a player dismissal , injury to a key player etc. Let us hope that nothing like that occurs to prevent our expected victory over the Dubs!

First decade that Cork footballers have more All-Ireland senior titles than the hurlers...1-0.

Is there a case to remove red cards or at least make them rare events - they spoil games beyond the point of punishment. Send off the player but allow him to be replaced after a 10 minute period has elapsed. Let the punishment fit the crime but not destroy the game.

When you see Cathal Barrett clearing ball after ball after the elbow he got you would be inclined to agree...but blows to the head have to be stamped out too

Tipp probably the best team all year...not too sure how I'd rank the others behind them. Nothing between KK and Limerick.
How far away are Cork?

If an elbow to the jaw isn't a red card I don't know what is. It was a pity but not the refs fault or Barretts only one man at fault unfortunately.
Thought it was low of rte to keep showing him afterwards, he made a mistake move on with it no need to keep showing him and putting him up on the big screen.

Thought King Henry's comments on the red card told a lot about the Kilkenny attitude to hurling and the rules - He suggested that the ref should ignore the rule book and only apply (some form) of common sense. He agreed that it was a red card by the rule book but then goes on to say the rules should be secondary to this concept of common sense. Kilkenny have played the hard man game for many years and pushed the rule book to its limits - yesterday they met a ref who finally stood up to them. Unfortunately the game was the loser in the end as the sending off killed the game.

However if you think about it that only backs up your point.

By the rule book it was a red but IMO you have to take the occasion m, the weather conditions & the fact that Richie was fuelled up after getting a clatter in the face off the same player. It was probably between a yellow & red which leads to a merit of a black card rule in hurling. In fairness Richie hogan couldn’t be classed as a dirty player by any stretch of imagination.

A black card isn't an orange card: it is specifically for cynical play. I thought initially that Hogan could have been given the benefit of the doubt (after being surprised he was sent off in an AIF) however having listened to people I now understand the authorities wanted to crack down on contact to the head. I don't think the weather conditions contributed to the challenge. If Richie was "fueled up" that is all on him. It did hurt the final but either the GAA is serious about player welfare or it isn't.

Ah lads it was a red all day long. I can’t believe it is being debated to the extent it is. Richie Hogan is not a dirty player but he is a player of vast experience and should have known better. He was clearly going to take him out with a shoulder after an earlier exchange with the same player but when Barrett moved as he did, it was only ever going to end one way. If only he shunted him out over the line within the rules, KK would have had a sideline ball in a promising position which could have led to a score. And who knows what might have transpired after that?

I don't think Kilkenny can have any complaints on the sending off. Tipp soaked up all the Kilkenny pressure in the fist 30 minutes and would have won regardless of the sending off. They were like a coiled spring ready to spring in the second half and cut lose. Apart from the Munster final Tipp have been the championship form team all summer. Tipp v Limerick could have been an epic final. Tipps hurling skills were sublime yesterday, I could watch them hurling all day long.

Built like a tank too. It seems that Richie Hogan wasnt wearing a proper helmet. Cathal Barrett caught him when trying to flick the ball away. If Richie had the proper faceguard he wouldnt have been cut at all on the nose.
