Blaming Dublin for Meath and Kildares underachievement is weak.
These counties have massive resources and will I expect get it right eventually.
I also anticipate that due to population growth the GAA will decide that these counties will be Dublin like special cases going forward and will receive substantial investment.
This investment will reinvigorate the Leinster championship and attendances will return to the glory days.
The likes of Kerry will just have to rely on tradition to compete with the wealthy Leinster counties in future

You are right royalkerryfan, you would never see huge numbers of kids in Tralee or Killarney sporting Cork jerseys but up here that's commonplace. Places like Ashbourne, Ratoath, Dunboyne & even Navan are populated by families who moved out from Dublin. They identify with Dublin and though their kids will join Meath clubs they aspire to their children playing for Dublin, border towns regularly lose players to Dublin clubs because of this. I know of several instances of this from my own club. Former Dublin player Johnny Magee has a daughter winning All Ireland's with Dublin and a younger one on Meath underage team. Meath have put money into GPO's which is starting to pay off but they were a bit late to the party and it will take a while to catch up.

Some players opt out of the county scene if being humiliated in Croke Park is the most likely outcome. And the more that this happens the further the gap widens.

One of them even played intercounty ladies and they said they buy jerseys they like and wear them - not always becasue they support the county. Strange (to me) but true....

That might happen in very rare cases but mostly it's because Mam & Dad are wearing Dublin gear too. Our club is probably 75% Dublin supporters, there will be more shouting for Dublin on Sunday than Meath. I have a neighbour, a staunch Dub whose son was selected for a Meath Development squad, she says she could never shout for Meath and dreads seeing him in the green and gold. Other parents wait til kids hit teenage years and transfer them out to Dublin clubs in the hope of greater success. It may seem alien to many but that's the reality up here in the commuter belt.

Enthusiasts from counties that mightn't have great teams often support one at the top and I even know one such case in Donegal where they hitched to us in the 70's. Anyone who knows Donegal might understand as there is such affinity with the game but the competition from soccer is fierce and that they had no Sam 'til '92 was indicative of this, and so you see why MOM flagged it as one of the GAAs milestones. I also know of hurling family who support Mayo footballers. And then there be the notice on the Tyrone car window - 'I support Tyrone and the team playing against Kerry.' All Love/Hate GAA style you might say!

Of course I understand about this money doping of Dublin , albeit wisely used by them it must be said, which has left them nigh untouchable currently, certainly in Leinster. However , it seems to me that there must be other factors causing this malaise in Leinster. I can acknowledge the rest of Leinster cannot cope with Dublin in that championship because of their resources etc. But as far as I can recall the only team from Leinster in division one of the NFL this season was Dublin. Unless my memory is playing tricks with me this has been the case for a good member of years , apart from Kildare making the odd appearance. Clearly the absence of other Leinster teams from the top division has nothing to do with Dublin’s resources , dominance. Therefore could somebody riddle for me this conundrum. It seems obvious to me that Dublin cannot be blamed for all the ills in Leinster football. In that case, what is the problem up there? I think that's a fair post Veteran, There is no doubt Dublin have benefited from huge investment , I also think the neutral venue fiasco in Croke Park should be addressed, Id prefer to see us play outside Dublin for the neutral game. Wont solve all the ills of the game , but would send out a sense of fair play. But i firmly believe for all the resources Dublin have its the return we have got from the 2011 minor team and 2014 U21 All Ireland winning team that has Dublin winning All Ireland's now, We had large squads to pick from in the noughties when yourselves and Tyrone gave us beatings. We travelled the same distance to training then as we do now. We played in Croke park then as we do now ( doesn't make it right, But no body minded because it was great to take Dublin down a peg or two in their own patch ) We eventually got over the line in 2011 , lost in 2012 and could easily have had more barren years or close calls. but for me what has kept us winning was the emergence a group of young lads in 2011, we haven't had a return since and are unlikely to again. The 2011 minor team that lost to Tipperary in the final had Davy Byrne, John Small, Jack mc Caffrey, Ciaran Kilkenny , Eric Lowndes, Paul Mannion, Niall Scully , Cormac Costello . 2014 U21 All Ireland winning team had the same group of players bar Ciaran Kilkenny who was in Australia , but Brian Fenton had got onto the team. Recently Brian Howard and Con o Callaghon have emerged also . When all the hysteria is stripped away , this is a group of players who train hard , take nothing for granted and for me are the best i've seen in a Dublin jersey. I tell all young Dubs to go watch these guys no matter who they play. Because these guys wont be around forever. Meath ,Kildare are football only counties with populations of 195,000 and 222,000 respectively . Who really should be competing better. Kerry, Mayo, Donegal Teams who have either beaten Dublin or run them very close recently all have smaller populations . Thankfully Meath are in Div 1 now after a long absence and we will see on Sunday where they are at. I know a little about research and which is as much as anyone knows, if they know more then they are not doing research. Anyway what I see here is one of those cases where the issue has multiple root causes. The secret to the best solution is to identify the deepest ones and by addressing them, they then have a domino effect on the others, and while such a process may not scorch the issue completely, it will be the best possible outcome, also bearing in mind that the situation evolves over time so one must resist changes that may come back to haunt. Root causes might be money and players, so a new US multi-national manufacturing plant would attract young males, i.e. hit two birds with one stone. The other aspect is that the issue changes complexion once you solve one layer - in this case what is holding back other Leinster counties as they have money and players? Is competition from other codes a factor - it certainly would be in Catland?

You have to remember AI semis and finals were the only games shown live, and they consistently involved Kerry. It was very easy to attach yourself to the stars of that time such as Mikey Sheehy, Spillane, Paidi or Jacko. Youngsters latch onto Ronaldo and Messi now as they’re constantly on TV. Those Kerry players were many peoples Ronaldos and Messis.

I have a few others myself, Wexford, Galway and Kerry among them. Would that be common in Kerry? Or is it just Kerry jersies you’d see?

Ah yes I'd be also aware of that in Ulster during the troubles when boozing buddies would go to one of their houses after the pub and insert the video of a good Kerry performance. I suppose it offered a bit of refuge and while the peace process lessened the need, I'd say that the reemergence of Ulster football meant ye had plenty of yer own stuff to watch. I have always found that Ulster folk universally like Kerry - I suppose we play nice stuff, and win, lose or draw, we shake hands and we mean it. I also believe there very interesting contrasts in the sports culture between say the 6 counties and Munster and though there would be little hurling up North, there is an amazing appreciation of it.

Yeah I think there was a good interest/following in Ulster for Kerry during those years. Probably in a way, because Ulster had little to cheer about, until Down re-emerged in 1991. Or possibly even, when Tyrone reached the 86 final. Did Kerry used to tour Ulster in the off season back in the 70’s and 80’s? I have a memory of hearing that somewhere.

Not that Dublin needed any help whatsoever today as their superiority to Meath was so pronounced but they still get breaks off the officials when they don't even need these breaks. How did Brian Fenton not get a black card today for the foul on the Meath player he brought down just outside the penalty area? It was a trip with the hand when the Meath player was through with a goal scoring chance and quite deliberate. Cian O’Sullivan’s momentum at one stage carried him and ball out over the sideline and yet the lineman’s (yes a lineman, they who normally see no evil!) gestured to the referee it was a push when it clearly was not and Dublin get a free. You’d nearly want to be a 10-point better team than Dublin to beat them in Croke Park and take the equation of the intimated officials out of it. This gripe aside and it's not the Dublin teams problem that the celebrity of the blue wave around them intimates officials but they are magnificent champions. 9 Leinster titles in a row is a brilliant achievement for the county of Dublin.
