What a beautiful game Gaelic football is when played well as demonstrated by Jack O'Connor.
Vision followed by an expert foot pass, the first one with the left foot and the second one with the right foot.

Kerry 1-16 Clare 0-11 FT Kerry 1-08 Clare 0-03 HT
Despite the result never really being in doubt, this was an unconvincing display from Kerry this evening against a game Clare side. Somewhat ropey at the back with 3 goal chances conceded in the opening half. Shane Meehan at FF for Clare was a constant thorn.
Joseph Linehan and substitute Cathal O'Beaglaoich impressed at midfield for Kerry; otherwise it was all a bit meh. Not helped either by a ridiculously fussy referee, a sort of Lord Gough wannabee who flashed yellow cards for fun in a clean game.
Attendance given as 1,700 and something on a fine sunny evening

It was a case of job done tonight , getting to the final without ever reaching the heights of the victory over Cork. Defence was stretched at times with Clare full forward Shane Meehan a constant threat and always willing to gave a go; Adam Curran did well on him & when he did break inside, goalkeeper Devon Burns was equal to the task, pulling off some fine stops. Midfielder Joe Linehan was the best of the four on show and he supplied his forwards with plenty of possession - all the forwards profited from this with good scores from Geaney, O’Connor, Goulding & O’Shea prominent.
Management will be happy, must have been difficult to keep the feet on the ground after the heroics in Cork.
Finally, the ref blew about 7/8 times for over carrying and probably was right ONCE - hard to watch.

Kerry 1-16 Clare 0-11 HT 1-8 0-3
Perhaps, due to the glowing reports I heard after the Cork match my expectations were too high but I departed from Tralee last night underwhelmed by what I saw. In a poor quality match Kerry were never better than moderate. It wasn't that they were up against a very good Clare team, they were game, because if this match went on for twenty four hours they would not have come close to winning. The fact is that Kerry were sloppy, lethargic and wasteful with a defence that was alarmingly porous at times. Indeed, reflecting back on the game it is difficult to pick out a defender who consistently shone over the hour. All our better performers were positioned from midfield up.
Playing against a stiff breeze in the first half , Clare were sprightly and willing. In that first half they created three clear cut goal chances. The first one resulted in the ball making its way ominously towards the line only for a great retrieval by one of the defenders, not sure who. Two more were well struck shots but Devon Burns made great saves on both occasions. Apart, from one wayward kickout Devon was a very capable keeper.
At the other end, we were kicking a series of wides. Jack O'Connor on the forty was one of the chief culprits. It must be said however that this guy looks to be an excellent player and has a delicious way of delivering disguised foot passes. Our biggest scoring threat was coming from our corner men, Dylan Geaney, the best forward on the field, and Emmet O'Shea. Our goal resulted from a fine run by Gearoid Hassett, looks a smart player, who punted forward to Emmet O'Shea who in turn flicked adroitly to the net. Even at that early stage one felt that it was game set and match to Kerry. As the half advanced we kicked a flurry of points to leave us eight to the good at the break.
Clare got some early points on the resumption mostly via the energy and industry of full forward, Shane Meehan, who was proving a menace for a variety of opponents. In spite of this good start by Clare, Kerry continued to keep them at arm's length as a pedestrian match meandered to an inevitable conclusion.
Joseph Linehan was the best midfielder around , yet strangely in the second he was switched to wing forward to replace Kevin Goulding with Cathel Begley coming on at midfield. Cathel does a look a classy operator.
Dylan Geaney kicked about five from play with Emmet O'Shea scoring 1-3. They were our top scores. Darragh Lynch , selected at full forward, played mostly on the wing. He got on the world of ball and mostly used it profitably but one wonders if he has the pace for the wing. Sadly, Emmet O'Shea was helped off in the second half being unable to weight bear on his left leg. That may turn out to be the most significant event emanating from this match.
I have a feeling most people came away like myself with a less than satisfied reaction to what they saw. It maybe, as happens frequently with adolescents, they felt it was a case of merely turning up. But it could also be that there are some deficiencies in this team , particularly in the defence which was not manifest against Cork. No doubt the answers will become apparent as the year unfolds.
The referee from Limerick was new to me. Incompetent is the mildest term I can apply. In his defence, he showered both teams equally with this incompetence. He flashed yellow cards all over the place in a match when there was not an ounce of malice or aggression. He repeatedly called back play when the advantage should clearly have been applied. However, his particular peccadillo was "over carrying". This was his fetish that inspired groans from the crowd. A crescendo was reached on one occasion when Darragh Lynch received a ball with nobody within ten metres of him. I do not exaggerate when I say the ball had scarcely nestled in Darragh's grasp when the referee gave the overcarrying mime. Poor Darragh was so exasperated that he looked to the Kerry bench as much as to say "what did I do wrong there". A possible explanation for this charade maybe found in the match programme. In a pen picture , he was asked to detail what significant matches he has officiated. He gave a list of obscure under age club hurling matches in Limerick! God between us and all harm.

Great match report Veteran. It’s a pity that after the highs of Cork there was this lack lustre performance. The defence is worrying , i wonder does or development squads focus on attacking players too much . Are the boys coached and taught how to tackle. Last Thursday all the defenders seem to stand off their men and give them too much room. The wing backs are fine footballers but I don’t think either is a defender. Should a team have the best 15 footballers or the best for each position. Totally agree that the referee seemed inexperienced. If the game was close he could have been the difference in a win or a loss.

Not according to his blurb in the programme anyway. He was the guy doing the Limerick County hurling Final though. Agree with others, he was very harsh on the overcarrying, like he set out to make a point of it. Pinged the Clare goalie for taking too long with a kick-out as well, giving a hop-ball, from which we pointed. Didn't think the keeper took that long at all, not by the usual standards anyway. Gave loads of cards for f*ck-all as well. The only bad foul I remember was a footblock on Emmet O'Shea, which led to him being carried off. No card for that one of course.

Munster MFC final Cork v Kerry on Sat Jun 22nd 4:30pm before the senior final in PUC. Kerry beat Cork by 2-10 a few weeks ago, but I'm sure a tougher task this time.

This group of young men seems to be the forgotten/ignored heroes this past few days and again after their great achievement in picking up another Munster title last evening.
Well done to all - our best hope for an All Ireland again this year. Some fine young prospects and a credit to their families, clubs and our County.

I will preface this by saying I had not seen this minor team play together before so I didnt know much about them.
The looked very comfortable early on but then the defence decided to go to sleep and Cork had a number of goal chances, scoring two in a few minutes. Kerry settled again and got back on top only for Cork to rally and equalise with a few minutes of normal time to go. But Kerry upped it again and scored the last 3 points of the game.
I thought a few of the backs looked suspect and Kerry really struggled with the Cork number 11. Kerrys full back, Alan Dineen, is a big strong man and did well until his black card. I also thought Sean O Brien was very good until he was forced off injured.
The 3 lads who played in midfield at different times of the game will all have better days I hope.
The forwards were good - Jack O Connor and Darragh Lynch did good work in the half forward line with Dylan Geaney and Kevin Goulding dangerous inside. Maybe we went for goals when taking a point would have been a better option at times.
Well done to the players and also to the new management team who have also come up through the development squads.

It was great to get a tough game as I wouldn’t have liked to go in quarters without a decent close match. The defence is a worry and Cork seemed to cut through with ease. A lot of work needed. The forwards are as good a group as any of the last few years, but I feel the defense lacks a leader. Buck is definitely right Sean OBrien stood out but I feel he better suited to further up the field. Would love to see him in midfield as I think his fielding is second to none. Hopefully they can kick on and reach Croke Park . Looking forward to seeing these lads in the minor championship over the coming weeks.

Delighted for James Costello and the team. This was a banana skin especially in light of the game in pairc ui rinn earlier. This seems to be a very balanced team with sprinklings of stars throughout. The backs are physically strong and technically good. Adam Curran and Sean o Brien in particular. Really nice to see some much needed midfielders coming through. Big men who can field, tackle and pass. Joseph Lenihan for me has the makings of a future Kerry stalwart. Up front you have hassett who has pace, and can kick super points. Jack o Connor has class, and inside with Geaney and O’Shea, who was unlucky not to start, no doubt from the knock picked up in the Clare game. O’Shea came on with the game in the melting pot and scored an individual point at a stage when the game could have went either way. Super performance all round and lovely to see football played like that. Defenders defending and attackers attacking. Well done all.

Congrats to the minors and a new young management team. Great game of football yesterday evening. I have thoroughly enjoyed watching their attitude to the game and the way they played against Clare & Cork. The people in the Development squads and those in charge of these young players are putting in massive work. Best of luck to them in the All-Ireland series.

Costello: ‘All the minor boss is doing is polishing diamonds’
By Eoghan Cormican Staff writer
Saturday, June 22, 2019 - 05:10 AM How do you guard against complacency amongst a bunch of 16 and 17-year olds when they’ve already dismantled this evening’s opposition, to the tune of 16 points, just a few weeks ago? Very easily, replies Kerry minor football manager James Costello.
In looking ahead to the first Cork-Kerry Munster minor final since 2016, Costello chooses not to focus on the 3-19 to 1-9 final scoreline from their Phase 2 meeting at Páirc Uí Rinn on May 7, but rather the 1-8 to 0-11 stalemate which arose, albeit briefly, when Cork sub Jack Cahalane found the Kerry net 24 seconds into the second half.
And with the wind favouring the home side for that second period, Kerry’s then 30-game unbeaten run at minor level appeared under genuine threat. Of course, what followed this goal was an unanswered burst of 3-7 from Kerry to see them back across the border with 16 points to spare.
“Everybody forgets that the game was level early in the second half and very much there for the taking,” begins Kerry minor boss Costello.“We are reminding the lads of that through the power of video.
You can be talking to these guys all you want, or you can throw it up on a big screen, show the clips quite easily, and ask them, how did you feel when the ball hit the back of the net early in the second-half.
"There is plenty of evidence there to throw at these guys that Saturday is going to be a different ball game.”
Does he believe his message is sinking in?
“I genuinely do. At U17s, anything can happen. They are more like hurling games in that you can rack up, as we did, 3-7 in 10 or 15 minutes. Cork are capable of racking up the same score so the game will take on its own life.”
That the Munster minor final remains the curtain-raiser to the senior decider is very much at odds with the breaking from tradition which has occurred in the other three provinces. Last week’s Connacht SFC final was preceded not by the minor equivalent but rather the junior
decider. A first-round Ulster U20 championship game between Down and Antrim is the curtain-raiser to the Cavan-Donegal clash at Clones, while the Joe McDonagh Cup final will again open proceedings at Croke Park on the afternoon of the Leinster SHC final.
Costello foresees minor fixtures being shunted further off-broadway if a second-tier All-Ireland SFC is introduced, with these games then providing the undercard on June, July and August Sundays.
“I think it is fantastic that this game is the curtain-raiser to the senior. In terms of developing minor players, there is that sense of occasion. The life skills that kids get from being involved in minor football is fantastic, just in terms of organising themselves, putting themselves under pressure. They are skills they can take with them for life.
“There is a small bit of payback, too, for the parents. There is a lot of talk now about development squads. But 80-90% of how a kid turns out is a) down to himself and b) his parents.
“James O’Donoghue is the only one who has talked sense on this. He says he learned everything in the back garden with his father. All you are doing with minor and development squads is polishing diamonds. All the hard work is done between six and 12. David Clifford was off the scale at 11 or 12 before anyone got hold of him.”
The Kingdom management have made one change for this evening’s game, Templenoe’s Colin Crowley coming into the Kingdom attack at the expense of Kevin Goulding.

Heard during the week the Kerry game will be played in portlaoise no word yet on any of the other games or any sign of a double header. Personally I think it would be a good idea to have a double header because it would give each team a greater insight on the opposition they could end up facing.

If we overcome Cork in the U20's we would be down to play Tyrone in the SF the same weekend - this would potentially give two Kerry V Tyrone games the same weekend which would make an attractive double header. First however is the considerable challenge of overcoming Cork in Pairc Ui Rinn tomorrow night. They drew in the recent league fixture.
