O rourke and Spillane are a joke. Their whole thing seems to be to make a point before the game and then look for evidence of how right they are during the game. The Kerry defence was not the issue tonight but you would never think it. Also Spillane funnily enough didn't talk about the poor marking for the mayo goal.

Mayo wanted it more than Kerry tonight.
Aiden OShea had a huge game and Ruane and McDonagh look like they are up to this level.
I would like to see them go at it again in two weeks time.
The game needs Mayo.
The All Ireland final last year was too easy for Dublin.
Too many kickouts raffled by Kerry tonight in a 50:50 manner. Mayo won as many of Kerrys kickouts as Kerry did i would guess. Clarke was better.
It will be interesting who is the goalie v Rossies.

Conditions were crap so we'll have to caveat everything with that.
Some poor performances and worrying trends reared their head again- the run straight down the middle of our defence being one that cant be attributed to conditions. On a positive, even in horrendous conditions Sean O Se is a beauty of a kicker. Some lads were gettin the ball in the second half and afraid to shoot so they gave a hospital pass to someone else in a worse position- Jameso got one such pass and was disposed- but the only reason he got the ball was the cowardice of the passer

I’ll take one loss in six as a much better League performance for quite some time. As has been said conditions like last night can make the result quite random. And if it wasn’t for that “pesky “ goal we would be talking about another hard won last gasp victory. It may even be good at this stage to get a bit of a reality check. Now “all” we have to do is get on the road to Roscommon next weekend and secure our place in the final. Sure even a draw would be enough and on most permutations even a loss would see us through but we shouldn’t be lulled into that kind of complacency. It’s really in our own hands.

I thought we struggled physically last night not really that big a shock against a very big team in horrendous conditions. I wouldnt be worried about the forwards at this stage considering who was missing. In defence we will really have to think hard about the makeup of it best 6 footballers doesnt make the best defence.
If we had moran, sherwood foley white and our ff line back it would improve things massively not going to get too upset about it yet!

Foley didn’t get any game time again last night. He has fallen down the pecking order in a big way.

Who would have thought at the start of the league that we’d be fretting over the fitness of Sherwood to shore up our defense. He was missed last night.
That being said, midfield is the much bigger worry for me than our defense. I would love to see stats on Barry’s passing (number of passes forward, distance of pass, etc.). He always seems to take the easy option and is very slow to drive things forward.
Given the lack of football played by Moran and the unconvincing displays by Barry, Spillane and Griffin, would anyone hazard a guess as to our starting midfield for the Championship.

Surely there is a place for Ronan Shanahan in that defence.

It will probably be Moran and Barry again. I think there is a spot for Johnny Buckley on the panel. He would definitely offer more than Spillane. He is a very good tackler and can actually contribute when we have the ball. I know his pace might be an issue but he is a very cute footballer. It will be interesting to see how he goes today.

In fairness, the signs of weariness were there from the last day. All those League & Sigerson games in rapid succession on heavy ground taking their toll on the young lads. Never looked like getting anything out of that game tonight. I totally agree. I think the Roscommon game should be used to rest the players who have played most of the games and to give the players who haven't played as much a chance to impress.

The game was lost predominantly in the first 15 minutes. Conceding 4 scores, I don’t think you would not have known we had wind advantage. Some very poor shot selection and execution during this period in particular, it was also the period we struggled most to get and hold onto possession. Mayo were much tighter marking and fouled less in this period also. A very good summing up really and I genuinely thought the game was there for Mayo at half time. Kerry with only a 3 point lead having had a gale of wind behind them in truth left them in a precarious enough position at half time facing into those same elements, and so it proved. Mayo were really streetwise too in the way they held possession and ran the clock down in that first half in those conditions. They were well worth the win.

Firstly, great credit is due to the Mayo and Kerry players for the wholehearted thriller they put on last night in such horrendous weather conditions. The players really are a credit to the Association.
Peter and Co would have learned a lot from last night or truth be told were just reminded about what they already knew. Kerry remains very much a work in progress and we’re short quality in certain areas and one cannot invent what you don’t have at the moment but just explore options and make the best of what you do have. The defence has been cut open at times throughout the league but only Dublin hitherto have done real damage. Mayo exposed our limitations again but it is at midfield where we really looked all at sea and where many problems start.
We’re short high-end quality in midfield and a fit David Moran is badly needed in the engine room. We are not getting Mark O’Connor back from Australia any day soon but maybe Peter & Co could have a conversation with Johnny Buckley once he gets the big one out of the way today. Peter knows all about being a busy businessman and maybe some common sense solution can be found. Johnny would be another good option to have around the place in midfield for this summer.
We face a huge battle up in Roscommon now against a team fighting for survival. Connor Cox & Co shooting the lights out and Roscommon beating us would be no shock. However, I do expect to see a reaction from Kerry after last night’s setback and a league final place should be confirmed. Happy St Patrick’s Day to all!

Was up half the night figuring this out, lol.
If Kerry win or draw they are definitely in the final. If Galway win, and Kerry get a result then it's a Galway v Kerry final. If Galway draw or Tyrone win and Mayo win then its a Mayo v Kerry final. If Tyrone win and Mayo lose then its a Tyrone v Kerry final. If Galway and Mayo both win and Kerry lose, then all 3 of those teams will be on 10 points, at which point it comes down to scoring difference. currently Kerry are +11, Mayo are +7, and Galway are 0. So if Kerry do lose, there would have to be an 11 point swing in Galways favour. For example Kerry lose by 5 and Galway win by 7
See not a bit complicated!! Easy thing to do is focus on Roscommon and clear all the confusion!!

It was probably hard for the people watching on TV to appreciate just how bad conditions were.
Kerry didn't seem to adjust to the conditions in the first 20 minutes, often attacking up the stand side of the pitch when it would have made more sense to attack from the terrace side. Our lack of a left footed scorer also went against us.
I wouldn't be too worried about it. It looked to me like Kerry took the opportunity to do some serious training since the Monaghan game.
Mayo are a decent team and I have a feeling they will have a big say come the summer.

It’s easy to be wise after the event and taking the conditions into consideration, but you could see last night’s performance coming. Management is being very fair in giving lads a proper chance and after six games I can only give my assessment of where I think we stand:-
Goalkeeper - Paul Kelly is a good shot-stopper but has no vision for the kick out. Generates no confidence and 3rd choice for me. Long term, Shane Ryan.
Full back line – no shape and last night’s personnel will be taken to the cleaners in the championship. We need to see Jason Foley play before we can access where he’s at, but my fear is that he hasn’t yet developed into the reliable full back we expected. Morley and Begley not for me. That leaves Peter, Foley, Sherwood, Enright, and I am also a Ronan Shanahan admirer.
Halfback line – we have a lot of permutations but we will be o.k when we have all our players available here. At the moment I would say Tom Sullivan – Paul Murphy – Gavin White.
Midfield – Moran plus one more-looks like Jack Barry at this stage. The Griffin experiment is ridiculous.
Forwards – without going into detail I am prepared to accept that we have a decent crop that can be molded into a prolific unit.
We occasionally throw in a performance whereby we don’t contest breaking ball in the middle third. It looks like it doesn’t come natural to our lads anymore in the way Paul Galvin, Thomás and several others could be relied upon to deliver this ‘dirty ball’ day-in-day-out. Donie Buckley!
I’m in the glass half full mindset and results elsewhere will give everyone something to aim at. These three defeats to Dublin will be chipping away at their confidence and who knows how they will react if and when their backs are to the wall in their drive for 5.

I for one never seen it as being an option, i'd put Spillane there ahead of him.

I know it sticks in peoples craws round here but when Mayo collectively decide to go for it, they are extremely hard to beat. They seldom bother their arses with the league but Kerry got a great eye opener about how physically strong Mayo are and how good they are at closing teams down. When in the mood.
I really hope they meet in the league final. Super education for a young upcoming team.

Any critique of this match must be tempered by an acknowledgement of the horrendous weather conditions which always makes a tight game a lottery. Of course the conditions were the same for both teams but the physically stronger and more street wise Mayo side adapted better. They were deserving winners. On a personal level, this is the fourth home NFL game that I have come home perished and drenched. How much more battering is an old man expect to endure. My mood wasn't helped by those truly repellent jerseys. Could Paul not have come up with a more aesthetic variation of the green and gold?
It is common currency now in Kerry football circles to say that we have a dearth of man markers. I would happily sacrifice all the man workers in the world for fifteen honest, indefatigable workers. All our success in 2019 has been predicated on that commodity. It was obvious from a very early stage last night that frenzied commitment was absent. Conversely, it abounded in the Mayo unit. Essentially, that is why they won. Why that quality was lacking last night in our team is unknown to me. Perhaps, it was there to some degree but was overwhelmed by its presence in a much greater quantity in Mayo.
This lack of intensity manifested itself in various ways. On a couple of occasions in the first half,Tommy Walsh, he had a fine game, won possession in the corner, looked up to await on onrushing forwards to a take a pass but they were nowhere to be seen. On other occasion, particularly in the second half, the ball broke repeatedly around midfield but there was no ravenous Kerry players diving in to claim possession. On a particular occasion in the second half, Stephen O'Brien, won possession in the corner and was quickly surrounded by three Mayo players which meant two Kerry players were redundant. Not a sight of a Kerry player running in to take a pass from Stephen. Those types of situations were replicated on several occasions during the match. This lack of hunger/work rate killed us.
An ominous sign in the first half, and illustrative of so much that was poor about Kerry last night, was the poor form of Dara Moynihan and Gavin O'Brien on the wings. Those two boys have been key players all along , giving us a functional half forward line with Sean in the centre. Last night it was back to the bad old days where only one half forward was performing.
I thought Jack Barry played reasonably well at midfield but once more Mark was lost there. On the evidence of this game and the Monaghan game one would be doubtful about Mark having a future in that positoon. Talking about midfield, I was disappointed with management in their evaluation of what transpired there. They allowed Aiden O'Shea to bully us and mullock his way with impunity in that area. Surely, they should have put somebody up against him who could equally mullock and wrestle. Why not Mark on him, or Gavin Crowley or Tadgh Morley and free up Jack Barry to play a more positive role. Assuming he was not injured , why was Tommy Walsh taken off rather than switched to midfield late in the game when we were impoverished as regards possession. especially when JO'D and young Tomas came on . Both of those lads threatened danger but were starved.
I will stick with management as I am on that theme. Paul Murphy is a terrific player but does he have the physical credentials for a central position? Should Gavin Crowley or Tadgh Morley not have been shunted in there so that somebody could to meet the mullocker head on in his advances through the centre. Another criticism, why take off Kevin McCarthy, he had scored two and worked hard, before at least three other non functioning Kerry forwards.
It will be very disappointing if we fail to make the final after playing so well in so many games. The wish then would be to meet Mayo in that final. It would be very informative to see what lessons will be learned if such a scenario unfolds.
So a difficult night for old and young in the wild prairie that was Tralee last pm. Peter is a smart boy and those young lads are keen students. It will be surprising if they do not emerge wiser and stronger after this traumatic experience. I am less sure about my own future!. I suppose I will shiver my way through the day and hope that at some stage blood circulation is restored. The most immediate and effective therapy would be a win for Dr. Crokes later in the afternoon. I badly need a fillip after the rugby yesterday and Tralee last night.

Clear structure and way of playing that has been refined over the last 5 or 6 years. Physically imposing and plenty of pace which is why they can physically match Dublin. Just dont have enough marquee forwards.

Veteran, I'm with you completely on those alternate jerseys - repellent is the word! What's wrong with our old Munster blue? They call those jerseys 'gold' but they look more beige to me. I'm thinking one would be well camouflaged in the desert wearing it.

Thought the game was lost in the first half, needed to be 5/6 points to the good with the wind. Mayo were well aware and happy to pass it around to eat up the time knowing they would win with the wind. Probably a bit of inexperience from Kerry in that respect.
In the grand scheme probably good to get a wake up call, winning can gloss over areas for improvement. That wont be the case now.

Agreed to win big games your midfielders should be giving you 7 to 9 out of 10 marks for performance . Aidan O Shea call him. What ever name you want but I wish our midfield had some of his leadership where he lifted he team through the deluge yesterday . I would give Aidan an 8 out of 10 where I would give our midfield a 5 or 6 at best and this is weekly occurrence . We won’t be good enough with this mediocrity here . That why I have been saying that if we can’t get any quality MF outside of our present 26 then we need to borrow from Peter to pay Paul Isn’t that what team building is all about you’ll never ever get 15 fit for purpose players per position but you have to optimize what you have .

I'm hearing a lot of negativity around Tadhg Morley. I know he hasn't really hit form this league campaign but going into the season I think the general consensus was that he was our best defender. I can't undestand how people are writing him off. For me, he will be a key player at the back come championship.

Donie Buckley must cringe when he sees the video replay of our sub Diarmuid o Connor s attempted tackle on The Mayo forward in what was a straight forward block down he pushed him cheaply and gave away a point right there. Paul Murphy would have went airborne on his boot . It was a bad night for Donie B in the sense that they gave away a huge amount of greed that killed us due to lack of discipline in the tackle . Mayo also learned from Donie but went to ground at every oppertunity probably expected the over zealous tackling and took full advantage .
My last point. Can any modem Kerry player on the right flank kick with his left leg to score
Tommy had 4 point oppertuniies on his left but refused to pilull the trigger We love Moynihan s Drive but please Dara learn to shoot with your left of playing 10 they don’t all have to be off the outside of the right boot otherwise play at 12

Cant understand why he took off Kevin Mac.Was he injured? Our substitutions weakened our team while Mayo's strengthened theirs. Same story with Dubs, for most of final quarter. Should we keep some of our experienced guys like Walsh and Moran to finish games?

I think the Paul Murphy experiment at center back worked well for several games, but I am not sure come championship he has the bulk for a central position.. I am guessing Peter Keane is figuring he has Tom O'S, Gavin W, Paul M and Tadhg M (as well as Gavin Crowley) and is trying to make it work such that the first 3 from that list can operate together in the half back line... To compete with the likes of Dublin and Mayo [when going well] I think you need a more physical CB than Paul Murphy. I wonder who is the A and the B full back at training? Is Jason Foley still injured, it is amazing if he fell down the pecking order that far!

bad weather had a lot to do with the outcome. mayo are cuter as in holding a player to win a free etc. all the tricks that will wise a young Kerry up. I hope we meet them again in the League final. Tommy was fouled off the ball at one stage and Dessy dolan thought it was funny. Can RTE find a co commentator who is not anti Kerry? Hope the Crokes do it today. We need something from the weekend.
