Brilliant win and always good for confidence levels to get a win over the all Ireland champions, regardless of the circumstances. A lot of fellas really stood up this evening and some really surprised me, particularly Jack Sherwood. Kerry were aggressive and moved the ball with pace and purpose, a refreshing change from what we have seen in previous years. We should have won more comfortably, however,a bit of panic towards the end allowed Dublin back into it. The final Kerry score was a great move and it was refreshing to see that bit of cut and freedom in our play. Dublin really added to a fantastic spectacle, they were gassed towards the end but kept on going which is remarkable for a team on the road for so long. They are still the classiest outfit in the country. Games played in this spirit really show that if both teams go out and play ball, there is little or no need for rule changes. I thought both Fitzsimons yellows were very harsh. Maurice Reagan, in general, let the game flow, however, he made a number of perplexing decisions which are par for the course with him. All in all a very satisfying evening from a group of lads who are mad for road. Off to Galway in 2 weeks time, roll on.

Haven't enjoyed a game that much in a while. Onwards and upwards Totally agree, had a championship feel about it. Don't see that atmosphere in Munster Championship. Ain't that just the sad truth. We need more than the super 8s and hopefully a tiered league/championship system comes in at some stage.

Peter Keane & Co have already put their stamp on this team and how they want them to play - similar to his minor teams, we get bodies back but players also are not inhibited by the numbers on their backs - Peter Crowley, Jack Sherwood and Tom O'Sullivan proved that with their points. We not only defended in numbers but got a lot of bodies forward too when required - fitness levels seemed good too, a testament to Jason McGahan. It was heartwarming to see Donie Buckley impart his words of wisdom to the players just before the throw in - that kind of experience is priceless. Its onwards and upwards from here, nobody's getting carried away but in a game where neither PK nor Gavin wanted to lose, a win over the Dubs is a massive step in the right direction.

Big step up from last weekend and a further step up from the Tyrone game. The two goals and the fade at the end will disappoint them. Certainly moving in the right direction with huge positivity from all. Enjoying this new journey immensely.

The loss of Buckley and Maher has left a big hole in our midfield cover. I'd like to see Kieran Murphy of kilcummin given a go in the league. Has Gavin o Brien played much in midfield for Rahillys?

To hell with the super 8 concept. Just put the top 6 teams from division 1 into a group and let them all play each other during the summer. Rotate home and away evry second year. Let the final be played between the top 2 teams. You’d think I’d only dismiss that because we wouldn’t be in that 6. It’s hard to know what to do though. I do think all 32 should be involved for Sam. Only thing is, the top few are so well set up and looked after, that it’s become near impossible for teams ranked 7-16 to beat them, never mind teams lower than that! That top 6 thing you mentioned, we’ve got that (of sorts) this last 8/9 years. Semis that consisted of Dublin, Mayo, Kerry, Tyrone, Donegal. It’s the same old same old, and although those pairings have given us some enjoyable games, it does get a bit tedious. But they are the top teams, and that cream is going to be there at the top. Yes it’s up to others to raise their game but I’m not sure being stuck in a junior AI c’ship eith little to no coverage is going to do wonders for any county. Probably said this before, but I’d hold off on a tiered system. I’d give an open draw a go for a couple of years. Maybe then you’d get Kerry Dublin in Killarney

This was the type of game which induces heart attacks in old men and I suppose in those not so young as well. There were a couple of times when Kerry looked as if they might win comfortably but Dublin, as great champions do,refused to bend , clung to the cliff edge and could well have snatched it if the bounce had been kinder. Indeed, they may well have snatched it if they had finished with fifteen players. Michael Fitzimons deservedly got a second yellow but the first one was very dubious. Referees should only brandish a yellow if it is clearly justified because a second one down the road could be very costly. On the other hand, it would have been cruel on Kerry if they lost. Overall, they probably deserved the two points.
Victory was more important for Kerry than Dublin. It always is for the pretenders. Of course Dublin would have loved put another dart through the heart of Kerry but they have bigger goals on their mind. They got a bird's eye view of some of these young Kerry bucks and those impressions will, in due course, be retrieved from the memory bank and painstakingly processed. But Kerry will have learned too. They will certainly have learned at first hand how difficult it is to defeat a team of the first rank, even when you appear to have them on the canvas. Either way, it was a compelling confrontation, the standard being higher than the corresponding game two years ago and played with none of the bitterness that percolated through all that game. I have no idea what sparked off the madness after the final whistle. Perhaps, taunting, careless words were expressed.
For me, the heart warming aspect of the game was that the intensity and work rate I witnessed against Tyrone( I did not see the Cavan match) was replicated. The ravenous hounding by the our defensive unit was again exhibited. It is true to say that were not as water tight back there as we were against Tyrone, conceding two goals and some frees) but of course there is no comparison between the teams we faced on both days. Our opponents last night are going for five in a row while Tyrone, sadly, seem to be a bedraggled unit at the moment.
When Stephen O'Brien blasted to the net it looked to me that we could be on our way. However, Dublin gave us no time to savour that moment. Con's goal, while it was lucky in the sense that it took a cursed deflection, demonstrated the ability of Dublin to retaliate quickly and it also demonstrated the talent of young Con. We scarcely needed reminders of either. Significantly,Kerry replied with equal alacrity through a point from young Tom from Dingle. That man could be a big player for us this year. Isn't he a cocky devil! We stretched it out again but then the aforementioned heart attack threatened once more. A great movement finished in the hands of Paul Mannion. What a player he is. He rounded Brian O Beaghlaigh, What a player that man is too. In any case, Paul finished expertly even though I thought Shane Ryan might have done better. Maybe I am being a little harsh on him. Once more we replied by sallying up field to register another point. Very important, like our reply to the first goal, and indicative of a refusal to cave in against a powerful force. Two in it at the break.
Inevitably, the pace dropped a little in the second half. Again we stretched away but again we were reeled in and when Dublin equalised towards the end I felt their superior nous would grasp it from us.However, it appears that Peter Keane has instilled defiance and gumption into these lads . A fine movement, in which David Moran played a crucial role , finished up in the receptive maw of Peter Crowley and Peter and Kerry had the last say with a winning point. That old heart settled down now and I ambled away as content as any old curmudgeon would expect to be on a rainy night in Tralee. No All-Ireland won but hope abounds. But then again it is often the hope that kills.
Shane should have caught a high ball in the first half which luckily broke to a Kerry player. I have already alluded to Paul Mannion's goal. I wonder should he have got down quicker. It is not unreasonable to say that the he still has not clinched the goal keeping job.
I cannot find fault with our full back line of Peter , Jack and Brian. They were playing against top notchers yet each distinguished himself.
Both Paul Murphy and Tom O'Sullivan were excellent in the half back line. Tadgh Morley was moderate. I am not sure he is happy at wing back.
From what I could establish Jack Barry was on Brian Fenton. They probably broke even- Brian's finesse against Jack's ruggedness. Gavin O'Brien seemed to be on James McCarthy at midfield. It must be conceded that James scored ?three points but one has to be delighted with this galloping chaser from Strand Road. When ha came off he was gasping. No wonder, this man a has lot of training to do before he is ready for this pace but where has he being hiding for the past couple of years? Another man, that could be crucial for us as the year progresses. Adrian Spillane seemed to be under instructions to roam far and wide. He did that with a lot of success. With more experience and tuition the hope is that he gets the rewards his hard work warrants.
Diarmuid O'Connor continues to make an impact, albeit marginal but he looks to be a very good footballer. We are unlikely to get a return on our investment here for a year or two. Sean O'Shea continues to progress and as far as I can recall he only missed one of his frees. Maurice Deegan missed a blatant arm holding foul on him by John Small late in the second half as a result of which the ball went down field for a Dublin point. A two point swing. Must do better Maurice. Dara Moynihan plays like a man who was here before. Scored two fine points and ran himself to a leg cramping degree. Another cocky upstart.
Paul Geaney had a great first half but tired alarmingly in the second half when he played a like a jaded player.Perhaps, he is not getting enough sleep since young Paidi arrived! Those O'Ses were always demanding! Stephen O'Brien , as always, played himself to a breathless end. Scored a goal and a point. Would need to improve his tackling as doubtless he will under the tutelage of Donie. Also, and he is not the only Kerry back to do this, a kickout from Shane sailed over his head as he ran from goals. I suppose both he and Shane are culpable but again this is an area which we need to improve. Players must make themselves available for kick outs. Otherwise they are abdicating their responsibility.
In spite of some nit picking on my part, one has to ne pleased with this win and with our progress under Peter and friends. Six points from our first three games is hugely gratifying. How long since that happened? Kerry football supporters are getting behind this Kerry project as evidenced by the numbers that are turning out and by the reception they are giving the team. Raucous support and good football is a pleasing synergy.

mid field is a worry. dublin got 4 points from play there last night. im not sure Spillane is the answer there, may do a job elsewhere but midfield is not for him. I don’t think McCarthy was playing midfield or if he was Spillane wasn’t marking him. It looked to that he was half back on O’Brien with Gavin midfield on Adrian Spillane.

You can already see the difference in this Kerry team since Peter Keane has taken over. Last night had a championship felt to it. While it’s only February you get that feeling that Kerry team means business and they are taking every game very seriously.
I’ve been impressed with Keane so far. Their energy hunger commitment and work rate is fantastic.
Shane Ryan is obviously the best keeper in the County and he will only get better.
The backs have shown up well in the first 3 games and when you add fellas like Jason Foley and Gavin White it will be a solid group.
I’ve been impressed with midfield also . Jack Barry didn’t have his best year last year but he looks a different player this year under Keane. Adrian Spillane has run himself to a standstill in every game. Great effort.
Sean O’Shea and Dara Moynihan have been impressive and Gavin O’Brien is also doing a great job.
I know Paul Geaney tired last night but I wouldn’t worry too much about it . His fitness levels will get better with more games and you add Tommy Walsh David Clifford and James O’Donoghue in there. He’ll get plenty chances one on one in future games and he won’t be held . The panel will get stronger and as more players come back I can see them getting better and better.
It’s also great to have Donie Buckley back.
It’s still early but I like what I’m seeing so far.

Good post. I see Foley, White, James O'D and Clifford readily supplementing what is looking like a very strong lineup. I disagree on midfield however - have been at all 3 games and think we have real room for improvement here. I do think the management team will get it right. For me, Spillane is not up to this level and like Barry OSullivan last year, will not be on the panel come c'ship. He does not have the pace and has had no influence whatsoever on the 3 games to date. Barry also continues to show a distinct lack of composure in front of goals, worryingly for his 3rd season in.

Great insights there lads it has been a very satisfying league so far.
Added to the players coming back I’d put Kevin McCarthy I think he has a good chance of starting come the summer, he has all the attributes to be a top forward and has the heart of a lion.
For midfield it’s hard to look past Moran and Barry again but they will hopefully have better help around them than in previous years. Dublin in particular will have an advantage here later in the year should we meet again. Young Fenton really is a remarkable footballer, one of the best we have ever seen in IMO.
Anyway so far so good as others have said you can already see the positive influence the new regime is having, we are better organised than I have seen in some time. Our young lads look better equipped for this level of football this year too, Sean O’Se and others have filled out over the winter to my eyes. What a help it is to have a guy that can kick 45’s and longer frees reliably btw, hope he stays healthy.

Austin Stack Park has to get a mention here too. What an atmosphere last night. Hopefully they can develop the Dunnes end asap to make future game even better. All home league games should be played under lights in Tralee I believe. Roll on the Mayo game on Paddy's weekend.

On the midfield, agree we are not where we would want to be but Dublin have their own problems there too while Fenton is obviously top class i thought Barry did as well as he could on him (not for the first time) also hughes of Monaghan gave him plenty of it above in clones. Macauley is getting on and if you can slow him down doesnt have the skills to be effective, i have seen mcmahon and o sullivan a good bit over the county championship and both look shadows of themselves this leaves dublin short of height in the fb line if we see mcarthy having to back there regularly it lessons there midfield massively they are not as good as two or three years ago there are vulnerabilities there. Is anyone good enough to capitalise when they are in croke park thats the big question.

Dubs definitely have their flaws, particularly in the last line but they may just get away with it this year. An injury to Fenton, Cluxton or Kilkenny would make them vulnerable as well IMO, they seem to always have their stars fit and available at the business end though so there is no fear of them.

They might come down to Kerry but is the immemse numerical away support of the Dubs not a myth? On the RTE sports news last Sunday week, the match attendance at Monaghan/Dublin was given as a mere 8,000. Kerry fans easily out numbered the Dublin fans despite what people anticipated. This young team is getting great support. 13K for Tyrone game and 12K last nite

That was a cracking game last night, Buckley has been an immeasurable loss to Kerry since jack felt he was no longer required in the fold. To have the privilege of presence in ASP. last evening is a gift as the memory will live long. Both teams fought on their backs for their jersey and it was a reminder of the wonderful sporting product Gaelic Football is when it is played the way God intended. Huge effort from both teams and I think what was evident was the fact that the dubs are acutely aware that Kerry are the top threat to their crown but hats off to all of those amateur athletes for the effort and unrelenting never say die attitude on show on both sides. On a side note the boooing by the Kerry supporters as the dubs walked off the pitch was very disappointing from my point of view, I felt our lads did all in their power to show what that jersey represents and I felt the stands left them down. Just an opinion !!

I wonder how much McStay had on Dublin to win? He could at least try and hide who he wanted to win Yeah, as usual McStay can't conceal his hatred of Kerry. A disgrace again tonight. But so what, fantastic performance from the young lads tonight. Great character to go for the winner at the end. Moynihan was outstanding, no fear whatsoever. He's an idiot.

Great game of football. Kerry i felt just about deserved to win. Very fast attacking play and moved the ball very quickly. Our sloppy passsing was punished by a kerry score usually from a free time and time again, Kerry clearly targeted our back line by putting in high balls , they got some joy but near the end we started to cope with it. There is no doubt the talent is there and Kerry are a real threat this year. . Strangely i feel this game will benefit Dublin and Kerry . It will give Kerry lads belief going forward and Dublin will be bursting a gut now to get a shot at Kerry again, especially with the melee at the end and then being booed off. On a side note and this is not sour grapes, because i know we have our own beauts in Hill 16. But at the end of the game My young daughter asked me why all the Kerry Supporters were booing Dublin as they walked off the pitch instead of being happy that their team had won. It was a pity as the atmosphere before and during the game was brilliant.
