18 points from O'Shea out of 27 so far. Not wanting to be negative about another win but this is over-reliance on one man, surely. Only 2 points from the FF line today - worrying. We still have players to come back in including Clifford and JOD and we are still figuring things out with a whole new management setup.. It’s not something I’d be overly worried about myself. Hard to see Kerry beating Dublin next weekend without more people contributing on the scoreboard but we have a nice four point cushion now so a loss won’t be the end of the world. Geaney s form is a bit of a worry though, he hasn’t been a factor for Kerry since the Munster final last year. He has been good at club level though so hopefully he can turn it around. Great effort from our guys in the second half today. We could not have asked for more. Well done to the team and management.

Considering we're missing the Crokes boys, as well as some important players out injured and others being involved in hard Sigerson matches during the week, it really is an excellent result. Breffni Park is a hard place to go and win points in the best of circumstances so all things considered and in these circumstances - a really positive result for the Kerry panel and new management.

It was not a day for forwards, conditions were slippy under foot and the ball especially in the second half was like a bar of soap.

Was talking more in a general sense in response to a post stating we are over reliant on O’Shea. I probably judge Geaney to a higher standard than everyone else because he has been our go-to man for so long kicking 4-5 points in these kinds of games regularly.

18 points from O'Shea out of 27 so far. I'm not 100% but I don't think he has had a missed effort yet in the 2 league games so far. That's just phenomenal form.

Well done Kerry. Great 2nd half. Conditions were slippery 4points cushion. Hard to judge our team as so many are missing. Anyway onward and upward. On a different note, Roscommon had a great result against Monaghan and Conor Cox played well according to reports.

Well PG struggled really badly in Croke Park in the league game last year, pointing at several Kerry players to pick up his man when he himself was not willing/able to chase back. Not an option playing Dublin. Immensely talented player, but Cork aside last year (when we were made look heroes by one of the worst Cork sides of all time), has not delivered in a big game for Kerry in some time. Will be interesting to see his form and fitness line against Dublin some 12 months on. And while James O'D has been very unlucky with injuries, he is another who has not delivered in an even longer period. Just calling a spade a spade.

Good win, looked dodgy for a while however the winf was alot more of a factor than it looked.
Sean o Shea superb, his 45 was right in front of me and he hit it as sweet as can be.
Moran only on for 10 mins but was a big help.
Spillanes and lyne very disappointing and the Cavan half back line killed us in first half, think they scored 4 from play.
BoB superb as was Morley murphy and TOS, i get more impressed with Moynihan everytime i see him.
Geaney had a good game, 2 super points and fouled for a couple more. Lack of natural forwards in the selection was a worry before and that transpired to be the case but SOS certainly did save our cold souls.
Lovely stadium, albeit in a strange location. Overall job done and great last 15 mins.

Just watched rtes very short coverage, some massive point taking, SOS 45 looked magnificent into the wind. Very positive start, now for the Dubs,

I’m not denying his form has been poor for a while now and have stated as much in an earlier post. My hope is that with PK’s new approach and a more settled team around him we will see the best of him again. Between 2014-17 he was as among the best forwards in the country and he has only just turned 28 afaik, no reason he cannot hit those heights again. We’ll see I suppose. Last year was a bit of a disaster as we all know, both from a tactical point of view and in terms of individual performances throughout the team with some obvious exceptions. Nothing was working after we got out of Munster, for whatever reason.

Last time we played Dublin in the championship in 2016 Paul was outstanding iirc. He was also one of our few good performers in both Mayo games in 2017 in a two pretty frantic games. I think it’s purely a form issue with him at the moment.

Just had to counter your arguement about the big man not playing well against Dublin. And no more excuses please for poor games against Dublin your either playing well or your sitting on the bench .

Made the trip yesterday and was glad I did. I thought we showed great resilience and composure to come back and win it. A dog fight on a cold and miserable day up in Cavan is great for the learning curve. I thought some lovely football was played by both sides considering the conditions. Sean O Shea is pure class, to be kicking dead balls like that on such a miserable day is incredible. We lacked a bit of bite in the first half and conceded some soft scores but we emerged a different outfit in the second half. I was hugely impressed by Daragh Moyninhan and Gavin O Brien when he came on. Two wins from two so we can afford a slip up or two now and keep our division one status. This is a building process and so far so good. The future could be very bright.

Nobody fired that day we were beaten 1-15, Paul and James both got a couple of points iirc with very little ball going in. KD’s cameo was the last roll of the dice that day when cautioun had to be thrown to the wind, had he started who knows what might have been but generally speaking when Dublin face a big man they deal with it well. I seem to remember we faced them once more the following year and Kieran spent a lot of the game around the middle while he was not effective inside. By all means let’s put Tommy on the edge of the square next weekend and see what happens. It won’t be new to Dublin but I suppose it only takes one or two balls to stick or a bit of luck to make it worthwhile.

A game of two halves if ever there was one. Cavan should probably have been further ahead at the break. Cavan kicked some lovely points from 40 yards and they were attuned to the mark too and got two from that option. Kerrys woes in that half was mainly due to not getting much possession from either kickout. Cavans keeper was able to find his man from the short one and when he went long a blue jersey either fetched or won the breaking ball.
In that first half Kerry stayed in touch through working hard to run at Cavan and draw fouls. And Kerrys SOS answered Kerrys distress calls with an imperious display from frees.
The second half was the opposite. The Kerry half back line was resolute and things improved big time as regards gaining possession from restarts. Gavin OBrien impressed me when he came on and i suppose the story of this game is that Kerrys stronger panel wore Cavan down. All Kerrys subs contributed whereas Cavan had no real punch off the bench.
Overall, nothing to be getting too excited about at the moment.
The way the game is gone now you would wonder would Kerrys shooters like PG be better off in the half forward line. Not enough scoring power in that line yesterday it seemed to me.
The kickout strategy is still a work in progress. At times yesterday Shane ran out to go short only for lads to be running away from him with their backs to him. Kerry worked two marks but TW and SOB kicked wide.
Great fighting spirit shown though which is always a positive

Very poor first half from Kerry yesterday with Cavan running at will through Kerry's defence on the break getting some fine scores from play on the bounce.
Kerry looked leg weary in the first half and showed very little attacking ambition. Blanket defending was somewhat successful once Kerry had time to setup in this formation.
Much bigger effort and intensity from Kerry in the second half with more tenacious tackling eventually wearying Cavan down. Great to see Mark Griffin getting the lead point in an advanced position after coming on.
Plenty of positives from the last two games, plenty to work but also plenty of time to do it. Hard to look beyond Moran & Barry as Kerry's first choice midfield paring. Lack of quality midfield backup will require some thinking outside of the box for Kerry as they formulate a team setup over the spring and early summer. Mark O'Connor's absence leaves a gaping Grand Canyon in the middle third. More so when matted to the way Sean O'Shea and David Clifford have stepped up the plate straight away.
Dara Moynihan has brought huge energy and drive, it will be interesting to see his battle with M. Burns for the number 10 shirt. Maybe they both might form the half forward line with Sean O'Shea going forward.

Thanks to the lads who travelled for the reports.
I had to make do with Radio Kerry for this one and that - and the result - made me even sorrier I couldnt make the journey.
The Radio Kerry coverage was absolutely terrible. It sounded like they were broadcasting from a washing machine. It wasnt until I was watching the 'highlights' on RTE 2 last night that I realised there was a strong wind there that Kerry played against in the first half. To make things worse, the studio kept butting in with updates from the hurling and the ladies games and would do so at times when teams were attacking and about to score on more than one occasion. I'm glad I only have to listen to one or two games a year.

I was at both of the Tyrone and Cavan matches recently. Kerry played in a similar manner for both - keeping it tight especially in the first half and attacking more as the second half wore on. Cavan were excellent in the first half - they could do no wrong in front of goals with some fantastic attacking play. However, their defence reminded me of ours up to last year - very prone to giving away soft frees with lazy tackling. Our defence has certainly improved in that regard thankfully.
Most of the new players did very well. I wish Killian Spillane was more positive in looking for the ball - he did not show a couple of times when there was plenty of space in front of him and the ball was coming up that side of the pitch. I hope they persist with him as I think he has the ability and perhaps just needs to become more confident. Likewise Adrian - played reasonably well but I am not certain he is a county midfielder. I think there may be a berth for him half back or half forward as he has great physicality.
I think we lack physical presence in centre back - cant fault Paul as he is a warrior but he just lacks the sheer size needed for that position - I think Morley, Gavin Crowley, or the afore-mentioned Adrian may be better options for that position.
I think JamesO will have his work cut out to get his place back. Dara Moynihan again looked excellent and very positive when he came on - James has been too inclined to go sideways or backwards in recent years, which is a pity as he is a great ball carrier in close quarters and will inevitably get a free.
The more I see of Stephen O Brien the more convinced I become that he is better suited to coming on as a sub when the defenders legs are gettting tired. His explosive runs would make a huge impact in that period, whereas I think he looks average when playing the whole match, sometimes running into cul-de-sacs. His tackling also is not as strong as some of the others.
Paul G is much maligned - even though he probably has not played well by his standards, he is still a central figure. He is much better suited to a dry ball and his ability to turn and beat a defender is second to none.
The really bright spots for me yesterday were Gavin O Brien, Mark Griffin, and Diarmuid O Connor. Gavin looks a natural at this level - has great physical presence and very good ball handler. Along with Mark G they made a big impact yesterday - Mark G looks like a calf out in fresh grass further up the field - hopefully he gets to stay out in the prairie. Diarmuid lost a few handy possessions against Tyrone, but these were much reduced yesterday and I think he will turn into one of our main players within next 2-3 years.
Special mention for Brian Begley yesterday - a superb second half and really brought the game to Cavan.
