He will be a huge loss for them. A fantastic player. A natural.

Wasn’t surprised by anything in that article. Having been paid in Australia it must be really jarring to come home and be expected to put in nearly the same work for nothing in fairness to him. I don’t think he will be the last high profile player to turn his back on the game sadly. The game is at a precipice, especially in the counties in the lower divisions where you’d really have to wonder what is the point of all that effort at this stage.

He won't be the last person to fail to warm to the Aussies.
It must be some place because not one person I met have said they liked the people out there... yet they all loved the place.

Christmas message to footballers and hurlers: you voluntary choose football/hurling as your hobby. If you are not enjoying it get off the stage , quit the moaning and find another hobby. That’s what rational adults do in every walk of life.

The bit that resonated most for me was coming back at 26 having missed out on college as a young lad and not knowing what to do next.
Most lads don't make it in Oz or come back badly injured.

It's a point I keep making. If they're not in third level education over there they are being really badly advised.

Given that Flynn barely remembers school other than the fact he won a hogan cup is more relevant than the year he spent in Australia when assessing his priorities.

Happy to see money go into the centre of excellence instead for the last few years. Its nice to have a great pitch etc but lets face it. Its only going to be more than 3/4 full twice a year at a push if we get cork at home in a Munster Final and a home super 8 games. That's fine, but at what point do you say stop? Do we wait until Health and Safety step in and close the place down for big games, as they surely will? The boundary wall is falling down, the toilets, the scoreboard, stand seats. These are all things that urgently need attention and there is no money being made available. Breaking point will come sooner or later.

Sad to see Fitzgerald stadium in such bad condition facilities wise. The portable toilets in place were an embarrassment during the super 8 game with kildare. Im told that fitzgeralf stadium owns the grounds of Dr.Crokes and a pitch and putt club across the road. They should sell up and use the money to develop their own facilities. Could go back to hosting concerts etc there again too if conditions are right.

With regard to the trialling of the rule changes - can anybody clarify what competitions are being played under which rules in 2019? Is it only intercounty games or will club games be used for the trial also?

The usual backlash from the mangers forthcoming regarding rule changes. However I'm not sure how the three hand pass rule will work out ............

Chatting to various people over the Christmas and New Year most agree something needs to change in the game to make it easier to watch and enhance the spectator experience. The current proposals are not well received and few believe they will address the core issue. We constantly hear about the endless hand passing, the lack of a tackle, the lost arts of the game etc.. and the need to address these. When one stands back from the game and analyses what has changed the one thing that stands out for me is the "protect the ball" mentality that is the probably the one common denominator. As teams have become more professional and management more analytical the cry of protect the ball and dont give it away cheaply have become the main focus of the game. If you have the ball the opposition cannot score and you should be patient waiting for an opportunity to score - don't risk a shot unless your sure of scoring etc... Rule changes have focussed on singular aspects of the game - how do we bring back fielding = introduce the mark, how do we stop endless handpassing = restrict the number of handpasses and so on. Could one single change revolutionise the game - a possession clock. Give a team a defined amount of time to shoot at goal or lose possession. This one change would speed up the game, encourage kick passing (faster movement of the ball), stop endless handpassing (particularly in the middle third), reduce bad tackling (clock re-starts at 0 for a foul), encourage teams to shoot at goal etc... Yes it would involve introducing a dedicated time keeper but this would help the referee by removing the role of time keeper from him. Maybe its all the rich food, idle time and a little alcohol affecting the thoughts but maybe not..

Anyone notice a reoccurring theme from Managers against the rules 1. Kevin Walsh - Galway ultra cautious. Defense and possession based 2. Turlough O'Brien - Carlow - ultra cautious. Defense and possession based 3. Rory Gallagher - Fermanagh - ultra cautious. Defense and possession based At least Cian O'Neill could see the positives and was open to give it a chance.

It doesn't really bother me if the rules don't increase scoring.
Higher scoring games is not the key for me.
What I want to see from these rules is teams having to kick the ball and not just holding onto possession with handpass after handpass.

I have resolved that unless kickouts go long for the most part...and we get high fielding back.... i am going give up on football and spend the few bob going to more hurling games.

Listowel Emmets & Feale Rangers forward; Sigerson winner with UCC, won All Ireland junior medals with Kerry. His father is a native of Roscommon , hence the move.

The brilliant success of the new round robin system and the hurling championship in general must be a bitter pill for someone as anti-hurling as yourself. Anyway, happy new year!

In fairness, outside of the top 5-6 teams playing each other the current game is pretty much unwatchable and is not a draw for the neutral.

If those stats remain constant for the pre-season competition, it would mean 117 goals scored under the old rules versus 67 goals for the same amount (48) of games under the proposed new rules. While scoring totals aren't the only aspect in terms of assessing the new rules, I think they would have to be regarded as a fairly major one, especially when the reports from matches so far have been mixed at best. The quality of the games would have had to improve massively to make up for that sort of decrease in scoring and that just simply doesn't seem to be the case. That sort of a decline in scoring places the new rules into the automatic failure zone for me. I really don't see how anyone could possibly make the case that the trial period should be continued into the league in good faith if that drop in the scoring rate stays the same once the pre-season competitions are finished. Sometimes you have to take a step back to go forward and I think that's where the GAA are with respect to the current football rules.
