Full time fitness appointment is good and proactive. Kerry have fallen behind both Mayo & Dublin in this regard in recent years.

Donie Buckley isn't a fitness coach. You do know that? He is a skills based coach that happens to specalise in tackling technique and footwork.
Barry Sloan was over the S&C during Rochfords time in charge of Mayo. And when he got more involved with Arsenal it was Conor Finn doing the day to day.
I understand about the divide though. Another full time employee to be paid for by the county board. County team is getting more and more elitist each passing year. And if they are paying a man top dollar to set out a prescribed S&C programme for the individual members senior panel and those around it you can be sure they won't be releasing them back to club football in a hurry.

So what is the complete backroom team, roles and names? It was Donie's tacking I was loosely referring to - didn't know of his footwork technique, are we talking shooting or what, you appear to be in the know so tell us more. I await your homework!

Just you quuoted the comment about us falling behind other counties in terms of S&C with your 'enter donie Buckley' comment so would have assumed the two are related. Foot work relates to postioning when making a tackle or shadowing someone. How you use your stance and body to dictate where the forward goes. Also the whole near hand in outer hand out that goes with it. A lot of it has been borrowed form basketball but tailored to football. Also footwork when giving and getting passes etc

Im just surprised its taken us this long to catch up. It is unfortunate in the financial sense that this is necessary but looking at the fitness speed power of the dubs we are a fair bit off yet. Its their greatest weapon i feel that relentless bursts of speed

Its their greatest weapon i feel that relentless bursts of speed Agree on the speed issue but we're not entirely endowed in the strength department either but I think we’re as much a victim of Mother Nature rather than nurture in recent times. Ever since Aidan O’Mahony hung up his spurs, the last of some hardy boys in our defence from the last decade our defenders have been getting bullied on a regular basis, especially against the likes of Dublin, Mayo, and Galway this year. Just as an example, Paul Murphy has got a fair pucking with impunity from Ciarán Kilkenny in recent outings because it's a total physical mismatch. Who in our full backline could hold out the rampant physical specimen that Paul Mannion has grown into? We could name a few more but do we have enough defenders with the natural size and strength to take on the Dublin forwards at the moment? Currently, most definitely no is the answer.

Morley has done a decent job on Kilkenny in the past and is underrated as a defender IMO. In terms of marking Paul Mannion I think the only player physically that might be able for him is Tom O’Sullivan he certainly has the pace and is as tough as nails.
Not saying either of the above would get the better of their Dublin counterparts but in a properly set up and well drilled defence they should be able to do enough. Of course that still leaves you with O’Callaghan and co. to deal with. The point I’m making is that while we have been vulnerable at the back in recent years we have some good players to build around, and hopefully now a coaching ticket that can get them working better as a unit. It might take more time than some people would like though.
Best of luck to McGahan in his new role, his credentials look really good so hopefully this is yet another step in the right direction. Can’t wait for 2019 to see what shape the team takes.

I did mention power above! Not sure we can have murphy and white in the half backs together. Mannion can be a bit hot and cold tbf saw him against ballymun last year and john small destroyed him he is playing anazing at the moment though. Agree on the size thing foley, morley the two crowleys enright and griffen are strong enough lads tom sullivan is getting there we will have to go horses for courses 3/4 of the above probably need to start even if they arent the best players

We might not have physical specimens like O'Mahony any more but we do have a highly mobile footballing backline that have not been that far away from Dublin over the last few years. Key for us as always is getting the match ups right and with the players that are coming through I think we have more of a chance of breaking even or stifling the better teams. Having the likes of Gavin Crowley, Tadhg Morley and Shane Enright missing last year did really effect our ability to shut down opposition forward lines. As much stick as Enright gets, we still could have badly done with him against the likes of Monaghan in the Super 8.
With a new management team will hopefully come a coherent defensive plan that learned from past mistakes like leaving 40 yards of space in front of our full back line. Adding a full time strength and conditioning expert to this and allowing for another year of growth with Beaglaoich, Tom Sullivan, Gavin White and Jason Foley will increase the likelihood that we will be competing come the business end of the championship.
I, for one, can't wait for next year to see what this team can do and who will force their way into the team/panel.
