Definitely the end of an era now. One of the great careers especially for a guy with no major under age pedigree

Great career gave me some of the best memories of last ten years plus. His goals v Armagh 06, cork 07, the setup for goal v mayo 14. Absolute legend in my eyes thanks for the memories Kieran!

No great surprise. Was a great servant to Kerry. Score some great points as well which are often over looked. More or less gives the new man a blank canvas to work with in terms of attacking strategy.

It was a privilege to watch some great days of him in the green and gold. Was a small bit of an ugly duckling in his first few appearances as a midfielder, but with his new role against Longford onwards he became a beautiful swan. The 2006 1/4 final against Armagh, which was that years bona fide All Ireland final, was when he really arrived on the big scene, mouthy, brash, strong in the air and on the ground , goal scorer and assister supreme and underrated points scorer. I wonder was it on purpose he retired on the anniversary of the twin towers going down!

Yeah the equalizer in 11 was as good as they get. He is a great character aswell say he would be a joy to train with once you werent marking him!!

My abiding memory of him will always be how he had time for everyone and would be last off the pitch when the photos and autographs were complete. Class act.

Has to be one of the most devastating full-forwards to play the game. He changed the way the game was played after '06. A born winner and leader. His influence will be massively missed. Very sorry to see him go. I hope he has some part to play with the team going forward.

Throughout his career, Kieran demonstrated over and over that he was the man in a team where one man can actually make a difference. An outstanding servant to Kerry and a leader. More than once ‘Star’ dug Kerry out of some bad places. Dare I say, he destroyed reputations and inflicted sleepless nights on more than one defender. One of the best and every way.
Enjoy your retirement Star and continued good health and fortune.

Only the greatest can turn games and even save them - KD did and on too many occasions to mention so anything we say cannot do him justice, and that is before we think of when he had to pick himself up when written off, some weren't so kind, hope he forgave though forgiveness KD style was to shove it up where the sun don't shine ala 'What do ya think of that Joe Brolly?' A giant that is could be a child amongst children, he was the complete footballer in so far as there is such a thing and I'd be thinking the only reason he wasn't a free taker is that he had to be up ahead inside. Every good wish to you and your family KD and thank you for the music. P.S. If anyone can copy the actual text of his poem from Twitter (I don't have an account) and paste it on here it would be appreciated and I am sure he won't mind! Here is the link

Natural born leader and a player that steadfastly refused to kneel or to quit before the sound of the final whistle. Good luck in the next chapter of your life big man and thank you for the amazing memories especially the two mayo games in 2014, just incredible.

There's been countless wonderful players over the years that were technically more gifted then Donaghy but there weren't many that made the impact that he made. He was the main man in 3 winning All-Ireland Finals for Kerry. 2006,2007 and 2014. How many players can say that? It really is now the end of the Kerry team of my youth

Saw a lot of great inspirational goals for Kerry over the years, John Egan in '75, Timmy Dowd in '85, Gooch in '09 V Dub,to name a few,but that goal against Francie and Armagh in the '06 QF was the most inspirational score of all. At the time I took it as a statement of intent against a rising tide of nonsense in the media about Kerry's soft underbelly. Kieran went on to have many more memorable days with Kerry but nothing lasts forever. We owe him a huge gratitude for his long service. I wish him well in retirement and I hope we see him in some roll with the team in the future

I am truly sad to hear of Kieran’s retirement, as inevitable as it was . Without question, taking into account his various attributes as a footballer, his team ethic and his inspirational qualities, Kieran has been one of the most effective and influential figures in Kerry football in my time following Kerry teams which spans more than sixty years.
It is no exaggeration to say that he terrorised opposing defences during his career. He was feared by opposing supporters with that fear masquerading as hostility. At the same time he evoked delight among Kerry supporters who knew from an early stage in his career that not alone had a supreme Kerry footballer come along but also a man who was born to lead. Kieran achieved all this without displaying an ounce of ego.
My wish is that Kieran will continue in some guise at some grade of Kerry football. In the meantime, I want to express my gratitude to Kieran for providing so many memorable moments for Kerry and indeed for football in general. Enjoy a healthy retirement Kieran secure in the knowledge that your contribution will endure as long as Kerry football is discussed.

So many memories with Kieran but for me it’s the character he showed on the field I will always remember. Never shirked a battle or took a backward step and was defiant to the end. We’ll always recall those goals he scored or set up and when the need was greatest he was often in the thick of it. Even in the defeats, I have great memories of his defiance. In 2011, when Dublin finally escaped from under our boot it was Kieran who kicked an incredible Hail Mary of shot to equalise the All Ireland final in the 69 minute - a draw was the very least Kerry deserved that day but a referee decided defeat was to be our lot despite the defiant heroics of Kieran Donaghy. Kieran stayed humble always and proved the ultimate team man. A great man and an example to all, you don't have to be the best, you just have to try your best and never give up, this was Kieran Donaghy. A Kerry legend now forever!

A sad day even though we knew it was coming. Kieran was a team player above all else. He probably stayed on last season because he know he could still make a contribution and wasn’t he proved right in the match against Monaghan. He can truly go with his head held high to take his place in the Pantheon of Kerry greats. There will never be another “Star”. Thanks KD for all the memories.

My benchmark of greatness was if a fella made the difference between winning and losing on a big day and the above goes further than just scoring, like the water in the taps, it is only now we truly appreciate him when he is missing. How would he rate in the all times best ever pecking order? 2 and often 3 opponents, even Dubs at their best couldn't handle him - he was a player and a leader, and at his best when a game had to be pulled out of the fire.

Well said, couldn't be put it better, ah I understand you won't even try to put greats in order, still KD would have to be in the top 10. With respect Vet, if you did put them in order it would satisfy our curiosity about you more so than anything else, and what would be amazing is your support analysis. Ah let today for KD and you might oblige us of a long winters night when we run out of cannon fodder.

The bits in his book about wanting Jack to do situational coaching a long while back, the fact that he was coaching senior schools teams in basketball from a young age, his enthusiasm, his general attitude - I really hope and more than half expect the GAA coaching bug to get a good hold of Donaghy.
He has all the attributes to be really well suited to the backroom.

A wonderful caretaker of the green and gold jersey. Fully got what it meant to be of Kerry. Could have explored professional basketball but didn't........These guys make Kerry what it is. His goals v Armagh in '06, Donegal in '14 and his stupendous point v Dublin late in 2011 will never fade from memory. Sitting in the pantheon of Kerry greatness, a prince of the pigskin, with his "collection of All-Ireland medals". Yes you are a "lucky hoor" Cheers and thanks for the wonderful trip............

The boyish antics fools observers into thinking he is immature, green he is, pure green! 'What you see is what you get' while others do veneer and camouflaged so all look the same 'til you scratch the surface.

To put it simply he was a great man for Kerry in every aspect. There were times when he frustrated me but I don't think any Kerry player created as many memorable moments in time as Kieran did.

Thanks for the memories Kieran. In all my years following the green and gold the Armagh goal in 2006 is my number one moment. I had the perfect view from the hill that day, as I did in 2014 for the goal against Donegal. Winning that game in 06 was as good as any All-ireland IMO.
Of course there are many more memories in a great career. Hopefully we see him back in some role in the coming years.

What made Kieran unique for me was what he said in an interview during the summer of 2014 when things were not going for him. I think it was after the QF game v Galway when he was a sub and wasnt brought on. He said in the interview that if his role for Kerry in 2014 was simply to be a positive influence around the place for younger lads so be it, that he would embrace that and do his bit. It was the ultimate example of a team player as lots of others would have sulked.
Of course we know how it turned out...5 minutes against Mayo to draw, starting the replay and the final, the county final win for stacks and the captaincy of kerry and an all star.... but he wasnt to know that after the QF game v Galway.
