thanks veteran. the expression "holding up his quin" is one i havent heard before but i assume it goes back to ploughing with a horse. The quin being the wooden piece that the horses chains were attached to. Is there another different source for the expression? You are spot on . That is the origin of the phrase , as I use it at least. You had a pair of horses pulling a plough or a mowing machine and if one was weaker or lazier his traces/chains slackened and as a consequence his quin dropped lower than the quin of the other horse. There is another expression derived from that farming chore as well. If a horse was contrary he sometimes kicked with the result that his leg landed outside one of the traces . So, we often refer to a person who rebels etc as kicking the traces.

Wouldn't get that on the East Kerry thread now, would we Wonderful stuff!

Back home after a long day, what a day it was for Senans. Congratulations to them and well deserved after such a long drought. The scenes at full time and afterwards in various watering holes was a sight to behold. Just goes to show what this amazing championship means to the natives. Having been lucky enough to be on a winning side myself in the past I know the importance of winning the holy grail. But for a club like Senans to finally reach paradise has to be an orgasmic feeling ! Winning makes you walk with a spring in your step with your chest out and head held high. To think of all the previous greats whose footsteps you traced in gaining that piece of tin for your parish / club makes one so proud. As an Emmets man I am really ecstatic for my near neighbours and wish them heartiest congratulations and soak up every moment of the months ahead. But one wish I would have it that this win would propel them on to much more success at a county level and not just sit back on your laurels like your opponents seem to have done for the past few years, North Kerry football need teams like Senans to succeed. I believe that the future is bright for them at the moment if they grasp it with both hands and move on to bigger and brighter things. My own beloved Emmets are in turmoil at the moment but that is just a hiccup that should be resolved in the next week or so ( hopefully )and I also believe the good times shall return to town shortly, along with Senans backboning a strong Feale Rangers outfit to bring NK football out of the doldrums and back to the feasting table of Kerry football. WATCH THIS SPACE !!!

Amazing really. and especially even more amazing when you see ballydonoghue won 2 titles very comfortably yet struggled big time last 2 years in county. football in NK is definitely in poor health though in saying that, this was one of the best championships in 10+ years.

I couldn't see rugby being a major distraction in rural clubs but soccer might be different?

population - lack of employment and lads working away from home.....thats probably the biggest challenge for most teams. though others just get on with it.

population - lack of employment and lads working away from home.....thats probably the biggest challenge for most teams. though others just get on with it. Leadership is a big one, Gweedore have a good manager but they will now face other well managed outfits - I think they fancy themselves to take Corofin. Also heard a Mullinalaghta player paid his own airfares from Leeds for 8 years. I recall an amazing football culture in Listowel, what is the current issue holding them back? Population must now be double, was less than 2,500 then, 5,000+ now. Brexit will hit rural Ireland and border areas while boosting The Pale and which is already bursting at the seems. Little the GAA can do about any of that. Can we see commuter counties emerging as Dubs population spills out, sprawls?

2018 North Kerry Final: St. Senans 1-12 Ballydonoghue 1-06 Thanks statistician. I watched a good bit of it. To be honest the camera work is a bit shaky and lopsided at times and felt sea sick looking at it. Did they not have it on a proper tripod and platform ? Commentary is very good though. I thought from looking at it the standard is poor enough but, in fairness given the time of year etc it hard to produce top class fare.

I merely only posted the link - That is from the Ballydonoghue GAA Club who apparently have their own recording equipment paid for by themselves according to ballythe-ire-side.

The North Kerry Board employs Paudie Herlihy of Castleisland to record the North Kerry Final. Paudie is a gifted cameraman and interviewer. The pre and after match interviews are always interesting and very insightful. The DVD is available from participating clubs or from the Board.

The wonders of modern technology.... watched the intro and the first 10 minutes on the dart to work today.... and well impressed i was too with what i saw...
Kickouts going long...what a joy it is to see that...
and a couple of expert points from kennelly and oConnell.....
and two accurate long foot passes from Barry OMahony giving his inside men a 70:30 chance of possession.
From what i have seen so far it compares favourably with the West Kerry final.

Conor Cox playing for Rosscommon in 2019? As far as I know Conor’s father is from Roscommon. This may have something to do with the move.

I merely only posted the link - That is from the Ballydonoghue GAA who apparently have their own recording equipment paid for by themselves according to ballythe-ire-side. They have indeed and both sets of equipment were used on the day. Cameraman Tim O'Connor is now well seasoned and Robert 'O Muireartaigh' Bunyan's commentary is brilliant - pity it wasn't live after all the effort but sin sceal eile.
