Category 2A infraction was the offence. Correct penalty applied Category IIa Any type of physical interference with an Opposing Player or Team Official. Penalties: (1) Minimum: 8 weeks Suspension; (2) Minimum on Repeat Infraction: 16 weeks Suspension. I think the word "MINIMUM" is used in the rulebook Do people really think this offence deserved the Minimum suspension?

There seems to be some lack of knowledge of the process surrounding it. 8 weeks is the penalty for the infraction. It's not the minimum. 8 weeks is penalty end of. The only people up in arms seems to be the social media warrior's. Good chance a melee will happen again next sunday and will happen somewhere else in country. Too much at stake too much effort and finance invested in teams to let last sunday events cloud the mindset. Winning is all that matters Sunday not whether twas a nice game of football. I remember early in year talking to fellas from ardfert who said they were drinking pints with mitchels lads an hour after their game which had a melee. Once there is handshakes after thats it. Talk of garda involvement and court is talk for real non GAA people and *ter warriors. The only thing clubs involved can ask is the best officials are on duty on pitch on the line umpiring and tracking subs and additional time.let the guards take care of getting us in and out of stacks park as quickly and safely as possible. Ah sure if Mitchels and Ardfert went on the beer together after the game then everything is peachy and theres no problem. Im afraid man that you cant see the wood from the trees, people calling for Garda involvment are not "non GAA people and *ter warriors". The bottom line is that assault is assault, regardless of where it happens. In this case the young lad was ok but thats hardly the point. There was a very messy court case in south kerry a few years ago with a player that had his jaw broken in a game, that went through the courts and that was 2 players involved. A mentor running in off the sideline and blindsiding someone is very serious and thuggish and deserves a harsher sentence imo

It's is embarrassing how poorly the County Board have dealt with this.

These are the GAA Rules that govern Misconduct by Team Officials. Think County Board is tied as unlike interference with Match officials there is only one category and not two, covering minor contact up to assault.
I wouldn't be surprised if HQ in Croke Park were to investigate the incident under the Bringing the Game into Disrepute charge. But that's got a minimum 8 weeks ban too!!
(c) Misconduct at Games by Team Officials, which consists of four Categories of Infractions by Team Officials which occur on or in the vicinity of the Field of Play, and which occur immediately before, during or after a Game: Category Ia Abusive language towards a Referee, Umpire, Linesman or Sideline Official. Penalties: (1) Minimum: 4 weeks Suspension; (2) Minimum on Repeat Infraction: 8 weeks Suspension.
Category IIa Any type of physical interference with an Opposing Player or Team Official. Penalties: (1) Minimum: 8 weeks Suspension; (2) Minimum on Repeat Infraction: 16 weeks Suspension.
Category IIIa Minor physical interference with (e.g. laying a hand on, pushing, pulling or jostling), threatening or abusive conduct towards, or threatening language to, a Referee, Umpire, Linesman or Sideline Official. Penalties: (1) Minimum: 12 weeks Suspension; (2) Minimum on Repeat Infraction: 24 weeks Suspension.
Category IVa Any type of assault on a Referee, Umpire, Linesman or Sideline Official.
Penalties: (1) Minimum: 48 weeks Suspension, with offender’s Team liable to Disqualification, whereappropriate; (2) Minimum on Repeat Infraction: 96 weeks Suspension, with offender’s Team liable to Disqualification, where appropriate. Suspensions in all four Categories above shall be applicable in all Codes and at all Levels. Definition of “Repeat Infraction” “Repeat Infraction” in the Section of Rule above means a second or subsequent occurrence of any Misconduct at Games by Team Officials Infraction in the same Category within a 48 week period (or 96 week period in the case of a Category IVa Infraction), irrespective of the Code or Level of the previous occurrence.
(d) Disruptive Conduct at Games by Players, Team Officials or Supporters, which occur on or in the vicinity of the Field of Play and which occur immediately before, during or after a Game: (1) Premature Termination of a Game- By reason of Serious Disruption by Players, Officials or Supporters of a Team. Penalties: Team – Forfeiture of the Game and Award to the Opposing Team (unless both Teams are responsible), save where there are exceptional mitigating factors involved. Other Penalties - at the discretion of the Council or the Committee-in-Charge, subject to a Penalty being of a form provided for in Rules 7.1, 7.2 or 7.4 to 7.9 inclusive. (2) Premature Termination of a Game – By reason of: (i) A Player(s) refusing to leave the Field when ordered off, or rejoining the Game having been ordered off.
(e) Misconduct Considered to have Discredited the Association. This shall include breaches of Rule 1.12 Official Guide Part 1, and Rules 5.33 (Hurling) and 5.29 (Football) Aggressive Fouls, Playing Rules, Official Guide Part 2. Penalties: Member - A minimum 8 weeks suspension. Debarment and Expulsion from the Association may also be considered. Team/Unit - Where suspension is deemed appropriate - a minimum of 8 weeks. A Fine, Disqualification and Expulsion from the Association may also be considered

Have they not modified Catrgory IVa down from 48 weeks as they felt Diarmuid Connolly penalty was excessive?

That's all I'm saying is county bord acted as per rule not on personal opinion. Rule is clear and penalty is clear.

Looks to me that the "mimimum" is also the "maximum" suspension.

Looks to me that the "mimimum" is also the "maximum" suspension. The following is the content under ‘Gravity’ which relates to suspensions. “Where a minimum Suspension is prescribed in relation to an Infraction, the Council or Committee-in-Charge shall have due regard for the gravity of Infraction in each case, and, where appropriate, shall impose additional Match Suspension(s) or a longer Term of Suspension. No Term of Suspension shall exceed 96 weeks. However in exceptionally serious cases the penalties of Debarment from playing or Expulsion may be imposed”. This clearly gives the county board a lot more power than they are letting on by just giving the minimum 8 weeks. It’s fairly clear cut, they’ve bottled it

Looks like a first time offender gets the minimum suspension to prevent any harsher penalty being reduced on appeal to a higher authority.

Without being over harsh on the individual involved he obviously got carried away with the mayhem probably picked a soft target and tried to injure him severely . He taking plenty flak from the court of public opinion and he’s only human after all . The punishment of 8 weeks was ridiculous however and in the cold light of day that was the very best the CCC could come up with ? Experienced. Grow men and that the best they could do ? The south paw to the players head was bad but the sucker punch to all of us Gaa fans trying to convince young lads that this is a game you should play. I for one will have to rethink with this sham justice Not good enough at all

Jerry was wrongly sent off in fairness but do you think it caused much damage ? Must damage? Do you think he wasn’t socially embarrassed to have to walk off the pitch in front of that big crowd with his family in the crowd watching??! After doing nothing!! Ger Lynch supposedly sent him off! Disgraceful I taught. Sorry what I meant was damage as in did it affect the result

You'd have to worry about the youth of today. The more gullible are consumed by social media, lots of them hitting the gym for Instagram pics likes and showing their new found physicality. When you see someone like Conor McGregor being held up as a hero it is any wonder brawls break out on the pitch.Gone are the days as well where lads go for a few well deserved pints after a game, sing a song or two and have the crack. No ,now it's a 3 day bender and the inner Conor McGregor can again break out.Dont have to go too far to highlight this too.

The two managers being sent to the stands was the equivalent of two yellow cards being issued to two players after a fracas where the ref does not really know what happened - its a warning shot accross the bows. To strike a player, who incidentally did not partake in the melee, is a serious offense. I appreciate the offender is normally of good behaviour but to apply a minimum sanction gives a poor message. Throwing the book at him was also not appropriate but something in the 12-20 week range would have been more realistic and again sends the message that this behaviour is not acceptable. The dugout/sideline situation in ASP is in need of serious and urgent attention - what happened was facilitated by the setup and was predictable given the right "boiling point". Thought Paul Hayes was a vast improvement on the SF's referees (previous week) but he was in a very difficult situation and difficult to get everything 100% right. We now have a county final with two "back door" finalists - is this a first for Kerry?

Two comments. First of all the person who was banned for eight weeks was hardly a McGregor fan. Secondly I agree with you to some extent on the drinking. The drink bans are seeing young lads do no drinking for weeks at a time and then for SOME of them when they do drink they can't handle it and their behaviour is cat. I much rather see e.g. intercounty teams go out together for a drink after a match. I understand this is the culture with the Kerry team and I applaud that.

I've no clue if he's a McGregor fan or not but I'm merely highlighting that if this guy is being held up as a hero to the youth is it any wonder we are seeing more bravado out on the field.Dingle guys crime may have been the biggest but it wasn't the only one.

Is it time to move onto the County Final?
Is this the first time that there is no curtain raiser to a county final? A wouldnt count an exhibition match between development squads a curtain raiser and it certainly makes the entrance fee more difficult to sell.
Its difficult to know what effect the controversy of last weekend will have on Dingle. Crokes have been far from convincing during this campaign and there is a feeling out there that they are there for the taking.
Personally I feel that the 3 weeks in a row and the nature of the games will catch up on Dingle in the last quarter when Crokes start springing their benched 'stars'. I think Crokes will end up winning by 6 or 7 points in the end.

A proper justice system takes into account someones previous history and maybe the CCC did that.
I dont know Colm Geaney from Adam but i would say he regrets his moment of madness.
Has he ever been suspended before.
I get the point that giving the minimum sends the wrong signal.
People do do crazy things when they are emotionally involved driven by a sense of attachment to something. For many people the club is as close to their heart as family. Attachment is a powerful thing. It has sustained the GAA for 100 years but on occasion in fraught circumstances people do things they regret.
The county board could reduce these fraught circumstances by limiting the numbers on the same sideline and getting the best officials there are.

The security men on the sideline are volunteers charged with keeping the peace - in last years semis in Fitzgerald Stadium, the security men were hired in from a firm and they patrolled the sidelines keeping order - it’s an additional cost but well worth it.

Extra stewards to be brought in for Kerry SFC final In a bid not to see the disgraceful scenes that marred last Sunday’s Kerry SFC semi-final replay, the Kingdom have drafted in extra stewards. However, there will be no reduction in those permitted along the sideline following last Sunday’s brawl that saw players and mentors from both Dingle and East Kerry get involved in a mass melee. Suspensions have been handed out following that with Dingle mentor Colm Geaney picking up an eight-week ban for striking an East Kerry player. The scenes in Tralee were shown on social media all over the country and has become a source of embarrassment for the Kerry County Board. The Kerryman has revealed that extra stewards will patrol the sidelines for this Sunday’s final between Dr Crokes and Dingle at Austin Stack Park, and they will be operating close to the dugouts to try and curb any potential fall out between the teams. hoganstand.com/Article/Index/291861Extra stewards won't make a blind bit of difference should anything major happen. It's the numbers on the sideline that cause the majority of these incidents and that is what should have been addressed.

Must say if I was from Dingle I'd be a bit miffed this week.Lot of the coverage makes them and them alone out to be the aggressors. It takes 2 to tango and East Kerry weren't slow going forward either.
