Waterford and Limerick have both pulled out of the Junior championship.
This means that there will only be one Junior game in Munster this year Kerry v Cork in the final.
The final is scheduled for the 27th of June in Austin Stack Park.
The ten other counties competing this year are
Mayo Galway Roscommon Sligo Cavan Longford Meath Wicklow Kildare Louth

who is in charge this year?
a good opportunity for players to represent Kerry and to develop players even if the completion is losing its lure somewhat with less and less competing
beyond me why the dubs cant field and why so few ulster counties??

A combination of short-sightedness and penny-pinching by county boards imo. Jimmy Keane (of Brosna) got a 2-year term when he was appointed last year. No idea if it's the same selectors with him.

It is a real shame there is such apathy to this competition.............

Can never understand why counties don't want to play in this. It's perfect to bring lads who would be 19/20 or so trough, when they might not be ready for senior football yet

The u21-u23 window is probably more inportant to cater for.

The u21-u23 window is probably more inportant to cater for. Yes with the move to Under 20 what is needed now is an Under 23 or Under 24 competition, also played during the summer. It would be for the fringe players in senior panels/development panels. Of course the main issue with this would be finding the dates to play it.

can we stop encouraging Dublin to take part ... this may be the only senior trophy we get our hands on for the foreseeable future!

Not all of them can though. This year you could have the likes of Gavin White, Mathew Flaherty, Cormac Coffey, Tom Leo, Conor Geaney back-boning a Kerry team in an Under 24 competition as these lads probably wont make the 26 of the senior panel this year.

A stat I saw on another site was that out of the 37 players Kerry used in the league this year, 10 of them had played with the Juniors previously - when you consider the number that would be ineligible because of their club and the lads who were called up directly to the seniors the likes of Clifford and O'Se, that's a very decent return.
In other news on Wednesday night Mayo beat Roscommon 2-15 to 1-17 in the Connacht Junior Championship. In the last 5 minutes, Mayo were down 1-14 to 1-17 and made a sub where they took off their keeper and brought on their sub keeper, but didn't play him in goal. Basically they played a fly keeper or in hockey parlance they pulled the goalie (it's been a tactic used in hockey back to the 1930s) The gamble worked and they scored 1-1 and didn't concede anything (the lad who got the goal was Ciaran Boylan, son of former Meath manager Sean)
Roscommon had named a strong looking team, with a fair few lads who had played with their seniors and McStay was in charge of them as well.
James Fetherstone (Roscommon Gaels) Tadgh McKenna (Boyle) Peter Domican (St Brigids) Fergal Lennon (Clann na nGael) Conor Hussey (Michael Glaveys) Ultan Harney (Clann na nGael) Ronan Daly (Padraig Pearses) Conor Daly (Padraig Pearses) Padraig Kelly (St Brigids) Shane Dowd (Creggs) Ross Timothy (St Croans) Henry Walsh (Kilbride) Cathal Cregg (Western Gaels) Hubert Darcy (Padraig Pearses) Finbar Cregg (Western Gaels)
Subs
Aaron Brady (Elphin) Aengus Lyons (Fuerty) Aidan Dowd (Western Gaels) Ciaran Lennon (Clann na nGael) Darra Pettit (Clann na nGael) Liam Cregg (Michael Glavey’s) Richard Hughes (Roscommon Gaels)
Mayo's team didn't seem as strong (definitely in terms of lads who had been involved with the seniors - I don't recognise any names)
1. Chris McGlynn - Moy Davitts 2. Eoghan McGrath - Cill Chomain 3. James O’Dowd - Shrule/Glencorrib 4. Eddie Doran - Achill 5. James Dowd - Louisburgh 6. Barry Leonard - Lahardane 7. Cian Bourke - Ardnaree Sarsfields 8. Pete Gallagher - Achill 9. Sean Walsh - Kiltimagh 10. James Kelly - Belmullet 11. Conor Bohan - Shrule/Glencorrib 12. Brendan Carr - Ardagh(Captain) 13. Cormac Doohan - Ballaghaderreen 14. TJ Byrne - Kiltimagh 15. Darragh Joyce - Islandeady
16. Matthew Flanagan - Balla 17. Ciaran Boylan - Achill 18. Jason Forkan - Kiltimagh 19. Seamie Lally - Islandeady 20. Ronan Carolan - Parke/Keelogues/Crimlin 21. David Lydon - Kiltimagh 22. Liam Moran - Swinford 23. Keith Hopkins - Crossmolina Deel Rovers 24. Darragh Keavney - Kilmeena

Austin Stack Park Tralee @ 7:30pm
The scheduling of this game 2 days before the U20 Munster final, seems to have done damage in terms of using it as a development pathway. Still a lot of decent footballers in there.
Strong enough looking Cork side from what I can see, from the names I recognise.
I could see this being a decent game of ball, even if it probably won't match last year's humdinger, which set the bar very high.

Am i correct in thinking that in previous years Kerry selected under 23 olds only?
If so, has this policy changed?

On paper you could say this is the Kerry Juniors C team, given that they're not using players from the last 2 All-Ireland victories, so can't state highly enough what a fantastic achievement this is, especially when you consider Kerry has 16 Junior clubs and Cork has 92 so the well is quite shallow in comparison to have to go back to it three times. Well done to all concerned including our new manager. A red letter week for Kerry so far. A 5 in a row treble of Senior, Junior, Minor in Munster. There is some amount of footballing talent in the county at the moment at all levels.

Players from more than sixteen clubs can play junior with Kerry. Players from every club except the 8 senior are eligible for Junior. It is a competition that is on the way out as some counties have mostly all Senior Clubs. It should revert to second string regardless of what type of club one plays for, or maybe an under 23.

I know but it's at junior level there's the greatest discrepancy. Cork have twice as many intermediate clubs as well.

Kerry looked in trouble for a good bit. The 2 Murphy’s in midfield gained control in 2nd half. Paudie Clifford to the fore in forwards. Kerry even missed a penalty.
Great few days for the Murphys from Kilcummin. 2 brothers captained two Kerry teams to Munster final wins over Cork.

Kerry 2-14 Cork 1-15 HT 1-7 0-11
On the evidence of this game and the corresponding match last year it is a shame if this grade becomes defunct. This was rip roaring from pillar to post, peppered with fine football from both sides and the result in doubt to the final whistle.
From the throw in, the ball was worked to Thomas Hickey and he cleverly beat his man and the goalie with a neat finish. This was quickly followed by a fine point from long range by the best forward on the field, Spa's Evan Cronin. It looked as if it was going to be a very painful night for Cork's resilient football supporters. They need not have worried. Their midfielders, Killian O'Hanlon and B.T. O'Sullivan, began to dominate and they were reinforced by two hardy, attacking wingbacks, Kevin Cremin and John Cronin. This put Kerry on the back foot. Scores began to flow for them fomm frees and play. In spite of their possession dominance, it was noticeable that the Kerry forwards were a handful if sufficient ball came their way. As a consequence it was very even on the scoreboard with just a point separating them at the break.
On the resumption, Kieran Murphy and Ronan Murphy, slow and ponderous at midfield in the first half, began to assert themselves. In spite of that , wingback John Cronin form Lisgoold waltzed through unimpeded to score a fine goal. In the blink of an eye Cork were five points up. Nevertheless, with our full back line becoming bullet proof and the two Murphys taking control at midfield the white flag was not about to be displayed yet. Some poor shooting made Kerry's come back effort more mountainous and their cause was further blighted when Thomas Hickey missed a penalty. It was awarded when Paudie Clifford, one of the stars on the night, was upended. Thomas's effort was saved. He was on the rebound in a flash but blasted wide. That seemed to impair his confidence and he was replaced before the night was out. Still he contributed 1-2, paid his way no doubt. The miss may have upset Thomas but it electrified Kerry. With the Murphys driving them on they kept marauding and they were rewarded when full forward Daniel Daly, a menace all night, finished a cross to the net. Evan Cronin was a forever threat on the wing, scoring five points in all, most from out in the prairie. Evan seems to a be a throwback to another ere when the brief of a wing forward was to toss them over from long range. Another cog in the Kerry revival was the contribution of sub , Cillian Fitzgerald from Churchill. I remember him as a fine minor but he has slipped from my consciousness since. Last night he ranged up and down in front of the stand, fetching and carrying. In spite of some wayward shooting, he was a major influence.
Entering the last five minutes or so, with Kerry ahead by three, excitement was feverish. Cork came looking for blood and Dara O'Se was summoned to make a fine save. They did manage to reduce it to two and the worry was a snap goal would upscuttle Kerry. In spite of six minutes added on time, a stubborn Kerry defence refused to buckle. Memorable in that resistance was a fielding effort by Paudie Clifford about thirty metres from his own goal, a ball that should never have been his. The genetic makeup helped I suppose!
Wing back Patrick Clifford from Templenoe limped off with a ? knee injury. Early in the second half. Am I right in saying that he was out for a while with a serious injury.
I was expecting a lot more from Cork forwards Anthony O'Connor, Cathal Vaughan and Dan Dineen. But then their direct opponents did not facilitate them.
Having seen Cork at minor level and junior level it is clear that Cork football is far from dead. We may witness further evidence of that on Friday night.

Patrick Clifford was out for a long time with injury but it was due to a shoulder injury as opposed to a knee injury

Was there any lads playing last night that might have a chance of playing in the league next year? If Patrick Clifford could stay injury free he might. Andrew Barry and Evan Cronin maybe. Not sure about next year but maybe in the future.

Was there any lads playing last night that might have a chance of playing in the league next year? From the past three years only Shane Murphy, Tadgh Morley and Jason Foley have come through. More likely the under 20s tonight will provide a few!

Some joke. We have to travel through Kildare and onwards to Navan. Kerry County Board should learn from Kildare's action. Same CCC who had to be over ruled by Director General.
