An interesting selection. I am really looking forward to travelling down for this game. Hopefully a long summer starts here. Looking forward to seeing Gavin White. I am not too familiar with him to be honest. Crowley at FB too. White has been Crokes best defender for past two seasons - outstanding all year last year and Man of the Match in county final - he has lots of pace and a good engine - injury has prevented him from playing for much of the early part of this season, his only club game time was about 20 mins in club championship final vs Dingle - no doubt in my mind that he is good enough.

exciting team, i dont recall us ever having such a big amount of debutants before.
no room in the squad for Shane Enright and Killian Young, i assume both are injured.
brian sheehan retired and Johnny Lyne and Buckley has packed it in. Tom Sullivan also missing and Jack Savage - any word on him?
big changes but midfield is a concern.

Good team - disappointed with bench
Maher Darren O Sullivan and Mikey Geaney should not be on that panel IMO - Barry O Sullivan Jack Savage and possibly Walsh in
Some of those subs have been tried tested and not worked
Nonetheless looking forward to youth being given its fling

Well no one can accuse Eamon of shortchanging youth on this occasion. It is no guarantee of immediate success of course but at the very least it is an investment for the future. I for one am very excited about this selection. Needless to say , I would have some minor quibbles.
I am a huge admirer of Kevin McCarthy . There is a dash and determination and fearlessness about him that you have to admire. Doubtless he will play a role on Sunday.
I am delighted to see Gavin Crowley on the panel but I cannot understand how it has taken so long for a wrist fracture to heal. This man has a physique and a devillmemt about him that some of our defenders lack.
As a long time advocate on this forum of playing Peter in the fullback line it goes without saying that I am pleased to see back there on Sunday. I feel he has become too slow for the half back line . It should not bother him in the least , having starred three a few years back with UCC when they won the Cork county. That full back line has an appealing look.
Anybody I have spoken to over the past few weeks were hoping to see Gavin included. It is a worry that he has played so little football. of late. There is no doubting his pace and offensive ability and if his defensive qualities match up we could have a winner here.
One has to hand it to young Michael Burns. Obviously he has continued his NFL form into training and must be seriously buzzing to withstand the challenge of Kevin McCarthy.
On paper that full forward line looks awesome as the Americans might say. Whether that pedigree is transferable to grass is another matter. JO'D may or may not be rusty but now is the time of year to scrape away that rust.
Of course , I am delighted to see that old warhorse, KD, on the panel. One can scarcely imagine the influence that ultimate team man will have on all those young boys.
They say there is no fool like an old fool. Once more on the eve of Kerry's first game in the championship I am as excited as I was all those years ago when I first saw the green and gold.. Indeed , I have rarely been as excited , anticipating the exploits of this latest batch of Kerry colts. I don't expect sense to assail me any time soon.
P.S. It is my intention to witness the ladies as well. They are surely worthy of our support.

Great pace in the half forward line coupled with serious finishers inside and our FB line has the anchor of experience which will imbue confidence in the two young lads. The half back line is also positive and I hope that managment has the rear six to eight in tune to deploy a structured defense when we lose the ball or need cover should we need to defend a lead. Personally I’m excited with this particular blend and it will be a very valuable learning curve as Clare will bring plenty to Fitzgerald Stadium on Sunday. The bench has several ace cards that allow for a significant strategy change if we need options going forward. Sometimes one or two good subs have the potential to ask hard questions of opposing teams and their presence alone result in deferred tactical considerations for the manager of the opposing team, in other words by just having the option you are inhibiting their options as certain players require specific options, all good.

I agree with the selection in all 15 positions. Its a long time since I saw a Kerry team with 15 players who can all win their individual duels without assistance.
Great to see that that Donaghy is the first outfield sub listed. Clearly the selectors see him as being very near the first 15. He will be a very important catalyst before the season is over.
Also great to see James starting. Hopefully he still has that explosive first 2 steps that usually takes him inside the defender. There is usually an other defender shadowing. That means that either Clifford or Geaney is unmarked or at least a worker like Paul Murphy is free around the middle.
I think I can see Maurice's finger prints on this team.

Very well put there Veteran as always. The eve of the championship! hard to match it in terms of excitement or anticipation. It seems like an age since we were involved in anything. The Dublin game in the league took the wind out of our sails and the fact that we knew there would be no silverware early on probably makes it seem even longer. All in all I'm delighted with the selection and , even as inexperienced as a lot of them are, they are still Kerry footballers and have tasted success at the highest levels at various stages of their careers. I don't know how Clare have progressed or otherwise since their last outing with us. I'm hoping for a 2014 V Cork Munster Final like performance against them Sunday to set up a showdown with same Cork in a couple of weeks. In 76 we christened the new PUC lets do it again!

If that's the best team we have (as opposed to blooding lads) then it looks like we have closed the gap with the Dubs, i.e. that half are Championship debutants means that 50% have been pushed on and which is remarkable by any standards, 2 or 3 would equate to an average of a 6 year inter-county career. And with all the minor success we will keep that figure up, exciting or what!
Personally I'll be watching Gavin Crowley's progress - the two ends of wan right hoor of a Kerry footballer is how wan John B Keane would describe him! Also watching our own Jason and great that Ballydonoghue is back in the big time, that he already brought Tom Marken to the Cross now leaves him with wan wee job, to collar Maguire and Foley's wouldn't be known for letting the parish down.

Donaghy could be needed if Gary Brennan is running amok; seems to have the measure of him. His introduction in Ennis last year was instrumental in turning the tide that day.

Super excited about that team. White must be playing super stuff in training to be included with no league time. Like the make of the defence three lads who would be comfortable at 3 this is crucial for me we need our backs to be versatile to avoid obvious mismatches later in the year

Can anybody answer the question posed by Clarinman in the last page, how come Donaghy isn't suspended? Have we finally started appealing red cards or what?
On the team, it looks good on paper. I hope the crowd don't get on their backs tomorrow if things aren't going well.

Maybe red cards dont carry into a new year. I dont know

Interesting Team. Four Changes from team that played us in the League. Are some inforced because of injury ,likes of Enright or is it a new direction. It seems Marc o Shea was judged on performances against Dublin and a poor game against us in 2015 league seemed to push him down the pecking order.

I know Philly McMahon got a one game suspension for the gouging incident in the 2015 final but it was served in the league. It’s either that or they don’t carry over at all.

I hope the crowd don't get on their backs tomorrow if things aren't going well. I suspect that Donaghy was sent off under Rule 7.2 In that case, the suspension would apply to the next game in either the Championship or League (whichever came next). Effectively, Kieran was suspended for the first game in the League. The rule states: Exceptions. In cases arising from the National Leagues and Inter-County Senior Championships, above Penalties shall be substituted by:
Minimum: A One Match Suspension in the same Code and at the same Level, applicable to the next Game in the National League or Inter-County Senior Championship, even if that game occurs in the following year.
IMO.

Kerry are probably in the same place as Dublin were in 2010 facing into the Leinster Championship. Gilroy played very defensively in 2010 and 2011. No defender got burned as no one was exposed. How Kerry set up will be interesting. Gilroys formula made sense for a young team making the breakthrough. Dublin could have sneaked in for the 2010 All Ireland title. Kerry wont really see the benefit of the youth policy till the twenties. Hopefully 2017 was the bottom of the NIKE curve for Kerry Dublin will still be able to stamp their authority on proceedings for another two years however. After that who knows...

Good forward line . Good backs. Midfield suspect. Don’t know if Moran is good enough for Kerry midfield anymore.
Bench isn’t great. Donaghy and McCarthy are good options off the bench but I think Barry John and Mikey Geaney not good enough anymore either. Darren has been hurt by injuries.
Maher no pace but you could still get a good half hour maybe. I think Fionn too has gas his run . Would have had Killian Spillane Barry O’Sullivan Cormac Coffey and Matthew Flaherty on the bench. Daithi Casey when fit. Will beat Clare but that bench has to get stronger for Kerry to go anywhere.

Dublins subs are beginning to have an unfamiliar look too. They used the ones listed below v Wicklow
Kerry do not have massive scoring threat off the bench in the selection v Clare but I expect that the 26 man panel will chop and change and evolve as we head into the mid July as games come quick and fast and bits of injuries start happening.
C McHugh for Rock (h-t), E Murchan for Fitzsimons (h-t), P Flynn for Macauley (41), D Daly for Mannion (42), C Basquel for Andrews (48), K McManamon for O'Callaghan (52)
