Can anyone honestly say after seeing Enright cleaned out twice in 7 days last year against a 34 year old average footballer say that they would be confident with him in there against this year? I certainly would be very nervous. I'd love to see Brian Kelly Paul Murphy Jason Foley Ronan shanahan, Brian Begley Gavin Crowley Peter Crowley Midfield David Moran Jack Barry Burns Sean o se Savage David Clifford Paul Geaney James o Donoghue My ideal team for championship would be: Shane Murphy Shane Enright Jason Foley Tadhg Morley / Brian Begley Paul Murphy Mark Griffin Gavin Crowley David Moran Jack Barry Stephen O'Brien Sean O'Shea Eanna O'Connor David Clifford Paul Geaney James O'Donoghue In fairness Eanna did his chances no harm yesterday.maybe I'm too harsh on O'Brien but he has some shocking wides at times and doesn't put over enough points.

While there are a number of contributory factors to the roastings he has had- he has been regularly roasted none the less Can anyone honestly say after seeing Enright cleaned out twice in 7 days last year against a 34 year old average footballer say that they would be confident with him in there against this year? I'd love to see Brian Kelly Paul Murphy Jason Foley Ronan shanahan, Brian Begley Gavin Crowley Peter Crowley Midfield David Moran Jack Barry Burns Sean o se Savage David Clifford Paul Geaney James o Donoghue Ridiculously harsh on both Moran and enright. Moran is far from average and did very well in the final also. Murphy is the key player and no way will he be corner back given his performances to date. Foley and shanahan have a lot to learn still at this level and foley in the first half especially was given a roasting by mccarron.

Hard to get away from Enrights performances last year and he does have a black card risk. I think if Foley doesn't make it well have to look at Killian there. My reasons for Murphy in full back line are that we might need his tigerish tackling and sweeping back there. Maybe Begley could fill that role too.

No doubt that Murphy could do a job in the full back line but think the greater need is out the field at the moment in terms of the leadership he provides.

The problem last year was that the quality of ball coming into Moran was too good and that was down to problems out the field and the half acre of space afforded to Moran to run into. Not too sure than Marc in his prime would have coped any better in the circumstances. The refrain after the semi final was that Moran would get a rude awakening in the final against Philly and Co but they were well beaten too.

I guess the big question being asked even on terrace talk this evening is are we going to continue with last year's negative tactics or cut loose?? The big imponderable. I fear Eamonns tendencies are towards defense before attack. Not the Kerry way. Can we match the abandon we showed in the league final??

Morley plays with great pride in the jersey but i feel at this level that a half back needs to be able to nail a point or two in big games and Morley has left a few crucial ones after him v Dublin in recent years.

At the moment I feel the following will definitely start come championship barring injury: Murphy Enright Foley ? Murphy P.Crowley ? Moran Barry ? O’Shea O’Brien Clifford Geaney ?
At corner/full I think Shanahan/Griffin/Killian/Begley are challengers At wing G.Crowley/Morley/T.Sullivan/Killian/Begley/White Wing forward Donnacha/Burns/O Conochuir Inside you’ve O’Donoghue/Donaghy
I know I have left out a good few but these are the lads who I feel have a genuine chance of starting. The rest might make a bench appearance or drift off the scene

Let's be honest here. The reason some lads were being picked in the backs the last few years is because we had no real alternatives. Enright is a decent to good corner back. Not top class by any means but on his day can do a job.
The problem for him is that at the minute and for the last few years due to our paucity of options his our go to man marker and is picking up the top forwards in every game. In years gone by that would have fallen to Mike Mac, Marc or Tom Sullivan.
Enright, Crowley, Murphy, Young, O'Sullivan, Morley, Shannahan, Gavin Crowley, Foley not to mention others. Surely we can cobble together a strong back six from that list.
As others have said, in recent years we didn't have the pace further up the field to track the runners. Donnacha Walsh and Buckley etc have a great engine and power but in a foot race against the likes of the Mayo or Dublin half backs it like a Lexus racing a Lada. Throw in our complete lack of pace at midfield until Barry came along as well.

Exciting times all the same. My big hope is that we persist with youth for the championship too.

But without Mayo having Andy Moran the first day Kerry probably would of won. Second game Mayo had a much bigger spread of forwards scoring , because they broke the tackle easily from deep and had lots of runners on the shoulder . Although Paul Geaneys scoring for Kerry is crucial in the big games.

Much better second half and there was glimpse of David Cliffords potential with some nice link up play. It seems we have a lot of forwards of a similar level but Micheal Burns has really put up his hand.Lovely kick passer, intelligent and good for a score I think him and Sean O Shea make our half forward line .Geaney,Clifford and a fit JOD with Stephen O Brien competing the forward line .Jack Barry should get into his stride now as well while Foley and Shanahan are starting to show.I think our keeper looks nervous and maybe the step up from winning club games easy to tight inter county games is testing him.But all in all a good start.Next 2 games will tell us more. I agree with that although some posters on here seem to think he won't start come Championship. If he continues the way he's going then he's a definite starter in the half-forward line.

Murphy Enright Foley Shanahan Begley Crowley Murphy Moran Barry Burns O'Shea O'Brien Clifford Geaney O'Donoghue
That leaves us with Killian Young, Gavin White, Gavin Crowley, Tadhg Morley, Mark Griffin, Tom O'Sullivan, Andrew Barry, Matthew Flaherty and Cormac Coffey for the backs. Midfield options would be Maher, Buckley, Barry O'Sullivan, Brendan O'Sullivan and maybe Eanna O'Conchuir Forward options off the bench then would be Donnacadh, Buckley, Eanna O'Conchuir, Daithi Casey, Mikey Geaney, Jack Savage, BJ Keane, Killian Spillane, Adrian Spillane, Kieran Donaghy, Kevin McCarthy.
I think there is enough depth, quality and experience there to be a match to any county in Ireland come championship time. Structure of the backline and trying to get a centre back that can hold a position would be key as Peter Crowley is more man marker that positional player. A forward line of O'Donoghue, Clifford and Geaney with scoring support from a young lively half forward line should give us the scoring power to go up against anyone.

Easy on there - you list a number of unproven (and even untried) backs in your reserve group. Gavin White, Andrew Barry, Matthew Flaherty and Cormac Coffey are all in the "jury out" category and do not indicate strength in depth to any degree. Some of these guys may make it this year or next, others I would have doubts over even in the long term. Similarly for the forwards there are several prospects listed and they are unproven - a few that I would say are not AI winning material even if they have played championship in the past. We have some established warriors, some recently blooded lads that give hope and a heck of a lot of lads that are being looked at - by previous reckoning up to 50 in training or expected to return in the next month or two - this will be honed back to 35/36 and at that stage we will have a better idea of what strength we have.

Think most on here would agree from last year(s) that there are a few positions/issues that needed massive improvement . 1.GK particularly kickouts 2.full backline 3.midfield/half forward line particularly half forward line. 4.greater scoring threat outside of p.Geaney 5.better bench options Overall i feel we are on the right track in most of these areas. 1.Murphy has been tried think he will improve 2.plenty options think foley and shanahan add a lot 3.midfield will be the same as last year but barry has improved again. Half forward line is imeasureably better imo with SOS and burns SOS in particular frees, scores from play and workrate. 4.SOS, burns chipping in nicely, Clifford will be a beast for us once he finds his feet really impressed with the leadership he showed when he came on didnt wait for things to happen he (tried) to make them happen. Still feel we would need JOD fireing though to be serious challengers 5. Bench is where im most impressed with the options there is a deep pool of lads now to choose from with different attributes Regarding Shane Murphy, I saw that 17 or 18 of kick outs were won by kerry players. I think four were given away. One of these was because he slipped on the muddy pitch. I accept that a lot of the kickouts that we won were short ones but I guess he's doing what he's told. Stats aside, to the naked eye, he looks a better kicker than Kelly or Kealy before him.

It’s well wide of the mark to say that Andy Moran is an average player (POTY 2017), if Mayo had one more forward with even half his skill, heart and guile they would have won at least one of the past two championships. Despite this I do have an issue with Shane as he never marks from the front and he seems content to conseed the ball to his man and then to try to shepard his man away from the goal.
The problem with this option is when you are playing mayo or the Dubs invariably there are inrushing forwards that will make good use of the ball in this prime location, it usually ends in a point or a pointed free from the opposition as a result of our markers limited options. If Fitzmaurice is considering letting them have the prairie in front of our full forward line we simply will have to be more brave in the full back line as the concession last year to mayo killed us and they grew with every passing minute. Mr. Gough was also there to keep the bellows in operation to increase their momentum, but overall though we deserved to lose that game as we were out thought and out fought on both line and field.

onlykerry- Yes a lot of these young lads are unproven but at least we have them as options. I think Gavin White will see game time this summer myself but would be more guarded on Andrew Barry (mobility concerns) and Matthew Flaherty (Very light, not too hectic at defending). Cormac Coffey has done alright in his games so far so can't really fault the lad. Just trying to point out that options are coming through in defence where they weren't before. Looking forward to see players like Daniel O'Brien, Graham O'Sullivan, Brian Sugrue etc push on for spots in the panel as the minor teams of the last few years all had a scattering of good defenders in them. Some of the forwards have yet to prove themselves and likewise there is a large contingent outside of the ones mentioned that could come into consideration. I for one am giddy with excitement about watching these players progress and push on this summer.
