Travelling to Inis Caoin next Sunday. A win, quite possible now, will get us to 6 points. Kildare or Tyrone will surely be on 0 points still after next weekend as they play each in Newbridge. With Donegal travelling to Dublin on Saturday and Mayo travelling to meet a Galway team on fire we could be on 6 points next Sunday night together with Dublin and Galway. Gives us a bit of confidence and leeway before having Galway and Kildare at home. With McManus back for Monaghan it won't be easy, but this young Kerry team has lots and lots of character, believe and resilience.

Thought it would be Clones so must recalibrate the journey. I forgot that Monaghan have a habit of dragging us around their county. But we played well the last time we were there and there might be time to pay our respects to Paddy Kavanagh.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves. Monaghan will be tough in their own backyard. It's all a learning curve at pesent. Beware that younsters can be flaky. That said another victory would be some confidence boost for these fast learning kids. Ciarrai Abu agus aris

Their son of course being born in Dublin and becoming a famous actor. The plot thickens.......

I have said everything already about the workload on our young players. A bunch of them are playing sigerson again mid-week. I sincerely hope none of them play next weekend and if we lose, so be it.

I always thought that raglan road sounded a bit like a psychedelic trip- whereby the author is in a dream sequence- similar to the song ‘looking out my back door’ by creedence Clearwater revival. I fear that I may have over analysed this one though

Agreed, something has to give this week. DC shouldn't have started and Sean O'Shea was shattered early in the second half, the two youngest players involved.

Some of them are going to have to play. You have Clifford and Crowley with ITT, Shanahan with DIT, Jack Barry and Barry O'Sullivan with UCD, Sean O'Shea and Brian O'Beaglaoich with UCC. That's 7 starters from last night and a few more from the bench. Is Foley with UCC as well? I don't know how they'll rest them all.

Joe OToole of Dingle..the INTO guy and a senator would be a nephew. His mother was Moriarity. Hilda OMalley married Donagh Omalley the FF Minister that brought in free secondary education. I dont know about the actor son ...what was his name I read Joe OTooles book recently...found it in a second hand bookshop... a brilliant insight into life in Dingle in the 50s and 60s. MONAGHAN may have finished three men down in losing to Mayo but Darren Hughes was impressed with the four players who stepped up to this level.
The Scotstown clubman was understandably disappointed to be beaten by an injury time point from Paddy Durcan in Clones in their Division One opener.
Home hopes weren’t helped by the late dismissals of defenders Ryan Wylie and Barry Kerr, with Dermot Malone black-carded very near the end, leaving Monaghan with only a dozen players on the pitch.
However, Hughes found positives in the performances of the newcomers in an inexperienced side, namely Kerr, Niall Kearns, Paraic McGuirk, and David Garland:
“That’s one side of it, I suppose – we had four debutants there, but I thought they all stepped up to the mark brilliantly.
“That’s something we needed to look at, to bring more boys into the panel. That’s four more and there’s plenty more in there, there’ll be more debutants during the League…
“In previous years we felt we weren’t bringing enough through. Davy, Paraic, and Barry are fresh into the squad this year; Niall was here last year and served his apprenticeship.
“It’s great to see him stepping up to the plate, he had a dominant display at midfield there, kicked two points. He’s another name to add to the list, another headache for Malachy [O’Rourke] with team selections.”
Hughes revealed there was confusion ever the reason for the first red card, for Wylie, in the 69th minute, after a multi-player scramble for the ball left Aidan O’Shea hurt.
“Ryan doesn’t really know what it was for and I happened to be talking to Aidan O’Shea and he didn’t know what it was for either.
“Obviously the umpire has seen something – I don’t know, I was down the other end of the field. Neither player involved was 100 per cent sure what he was given a straight red for.”
Hughes had no complaints about Kerr going two minutes later for a second yellow card, the Cremartin player catching Mayo midfielder Jason Gibbons in the face, although he did offer a plea in mitigation:
“Second yellow – he went to push him in the chest and caught him in the face, got a yellow card, so we just have to suck that up and get on with it.”
Monaghan also had two men sent off against Mayo in a League defeat three seasons ago, including Wylie, as Hughes ruefully remembered:
“It seems to be against Mayo in previous years that these discipline problems have come up but these things can happen when a game is in the melting pot.”
The red cards had less of an influence this time as they came so late in the game, although Hughes still felt Monaghan had some cause for complaint – but also had to ship some blame themselves:
“On quick reflection we felt we probably could have had a free in the last minute but we know we missed a lot [of chances] and made a lot of mistakes in the second half.
“We were confident coming into this game that we had a team and squad strong enough to do the job and that’s what’s disappointing, that we didn’t get anything out of the game.
“We were 12-9 down at one stage and got it back to 12 all and sorta felt we could get a push on at the last. We knew the game would be in the melting pot with five or 10 [minutes] to go and that’s where we wanted to be.
“It’s disappointing not to get over the line with at least a point.”
This was a rare defeat in a League opener in recent times for Monaghan, but Hughes is well aware how tough the top flight is:
“Here, we’re in Division One, it’s where we want to be but nothing is a given any weekend you go out. We’ll get back to the training ground on Tuesday night, look at a few mistakes we made and try to eradicate them for next week.
“It’s not going to set us back too badly, hopefully. Obviously we’ll be looking for two points [in Kildare] but there’s nothing simple in Division One; every day you go out is going to be a tight game”.
Kildare 0-12 Monaghan 1.10
Monaghan held out for the narrowest of victories to collect their first points in Division 1 in what was a most entertaining and competitive encounter in Newbridge.
This was Monaghan’s first visit to Newbridge since the year 2000, a game the Farney won by three points and a first league meeting since a quite fiery affair in Clones back in 2012 that saw both sides severely sanctioned for a mass brawl at half time.
Played in bright sunshine but with a chill in the air the game got off to a lively start with
The visitors opening the scoring after two minutes through Darren Hughes, although by then Kildare could have had a couple on the board as they missed a couple of scoreable frees.
Dessie Ward put Monaghan two in front after eight minutes but space in the Monghan attack was limited as Kildare had as many as 13 behind the ball regularly.
The Lilies opened their account in the ninth minute through Paul Cribbin but he was to later leave the field on a black card for a foul on Darren Hughes.
Jack McCarron restored Monaghan to a two-point lead in the 13th minute but by the 18th minute Kildare had drawn level with points by Ben McCormack and Kevin Feely from a free and they went on to take the lead for the first time through Paul Cribbin in the 19th minute.
It was a lead that was shortlived though as Monaghan struck for a brace of points from McCarron and Kieran Duffy as the pace increased. Cribbin made it a one point game in the 29th minute with Monaghan then striking a decisive blow when Conor McCarthy flashed to the net.
Kildare rallied but failed to register while the Ulster side had the final score of the half from Dessie Ward to leave them in front at the break 1-06 to 0-05/.
Cian O'Neill's side reeled off three quick fire points within two minutes of the restart from Kevin Feely, free, and a brace from Ben McCormack to reduce the gap to the minimum and that set the tone for a very tense second period during which the sides were level twice but crucially for Monaghan their opponents never got their noses in front again.
In the end it was a point by Conor McManus from a free that won it for the visitors but they had to stage a fierce rearguard action to keep Kildare scoreless for the final seven minutes of normal time and the five moinutes of stoppage that were added.
Kildare: M Donnellan, P Kelly, D Hyland, M O’Grady, J Byrne, E Doyle, C O’Donoghue, K Feely 0-3 (2f), L Flynn, F Conway, C Healy, P Cribbin 0-3, B McCormick 0-3, D Flynn, C McNally.
Subs: D Slattery for P Cribbin (34 Black Card), N Kelly 0-2 for C McNally (HT), M Hyland for M O’Grady (46), P Brophy 0-1 for B McCormack (49), E Callaghan for F Conway ((55 Black Card), J Hyland for C Healy (65).
Monaghan: R Beggan 0-1 (f), D Ward, C Boyle, B Kerr, F Kelly, K Duffy 0-1, K O’Connell, D Hughes 0-1, N Kearns 0-1, N McAdam, P McGuirk, D Malone, C McCarthy 1-1 (0-1f), J McCarron 0-2 (1f), D Garland.
Subs: C Walshe for P McGuirk (18), J Wilson for D Garland (HT), D Mone for N McAdam (39), C McManus 0-1 (f for D Malone, D Freeman for J Wilson (61), O Duffy for J McCarron (63, Blck Card).
Referee: J McQuillan (Cavan).

My grandmother used to tell me about Hilda Moriarty. She described how as a teenager in Loretto on the Green, and Hilda her senior, she once had to bring Hilda a meal in bed. She described Hilda’s amazing beauty, her dark hair flowing wildly down from her head and onto the bedclothes.

Despite not thinking I would be able to go to Castlebar on Saturday I managed to sneak away and travel down and back in the day.
I definitely won't be in Inniskeane next day as I will be out of the country.
There is an adult and juvenile season ticket available for anyone interested. PM me and I can try to arrange something.

And Luke Kelly was the only one who could really sing that song. He had an extraordinary voice.
It'll be interesting to see what team is picked. It would be sensible to see some changes. Did we win the last time we were in Iniskeen?
I love the mix of culture, social history and sport on this thread.

Yes, a side impact injury where a player ran across his line and collided with him. Looked fairly innocuous at the time.
