Sigerson Cup has kicked off this year with UCD beating Maynooth. Looks like the Kerry midfield duo of Barry O'Sullivan and Jack Barry got the better of the Kildare senior pair of Cribben and Brophy. Barry chipped in with a goal, which you can see here: www.the42.ie/sigerson-cup-wrap-3813738-Jan2018/Teams and report at: www.the42.ie/ucd-sigerson-cup-maynooth-university-3813257-Jan2018/UCD rested Jack McCaffrey and Con O'Callaghan. Elsewhere Garda hammered Athlone and Dundalk beat Trinners. Don't know if there was any Kerry involvement in these games, but there should be a sizeable Kerry contingent as the competition progresses. Tralee IT have a tough trip to Queens.

I think Barry was going for a point but he s god at getting into those positions in fairness. Brian O'Seanachain came on as a sub for UCD as well.

UCC in action next Tuesday away to Garda - tough assignment away but they ( UCC ) should be good enough. Large Kerry contingent with Adrian Spillane captaining the side - Eoghan O’Brien, Jason Foley, Jack McGuire, Andrew Barry, Padraig Lucey, Sean O’Shea, Killian Spillane & Conor Geaney - Cork’s Sean Powter, Michael McSweeney & Clare’s Evan Courtney should feature; Brian O’Beaglaoich could be club tied depending on outcome of tomorrow’s game vs Moy - UCD look capable but without the injured McCaffrey & the club tied Con O’Callaghan, UCC would be fancied to have a big say in the destination of this years cup.

Garda College 2-7 UCC 1-12
UCC needed a penalty in injury-time to get the win. Sounds like the Garda College really put it up to them.

DCU with Eanna O'Connor got past Dundalk 1-7 to 0-7. Ronan Shanahan will be back in his home town with DIT playing Tralee next week. DIT look to be strong up front and can also bring in Dublin U21 star Brian Howard who played in Croke Park against Kildare on Saturday. Interesting to see the Carlow lineup that DIT had to break down tonight if the team sheet is anything to go by: looks like a novel 3-2-3-2-2-2 formation. i.e. 2 sweepers between the 2 defensive lines. www.the42.ie/dit-it-carlow-sigerson-3826727-Jan2018/A similar lineup for Donegal or Tyrone might read 5-5-3-1

Killian Spillane scored a last minute penalty to win the match for UCC. They were a point down at the time. One of the UCC officials was quoted in a paper today that they send word into him to tap it over to secure a draw.! Now there is a man witch ice in the veins. I wonder how Billy Morgan would have reacted if it had been saved.
How many more players would have defied that instruction and have the nerve to go for the goal. I think we could be on to something with this young man.

I imagine a Sigerson medal is one of the most prized in any retired player's collection of medals
