Whilst casting no aspersions on the individuals selected it seems odd that only 2 of the six D1 (Minor) sides have representatives on the match day panel (if my Irish translations of club names is correct!!!) with only 3 of the side actually playing D1 football in the county. Seven D2 players on the 24 leaving 14 of the match day squad playing D3 or lower football. The spread of clubs is in keeping with previous years and has served us well - best of luck to the team for tommorow night.

With three schools in the latter ends of All-Ireland championships it was probably difficult to manage selection for this first game. The team will probably evolve over a few games as all players will now be available all the time to PK and co. If you study the teams selections for the past four years you will see there was minimal change (other than injuries) from the team selected the first day out and in each of those years management had to contend with a Hogan Cup Final which meant key players were unavailable until just before the first game - this has actually been a feature of these AI winning teams.

The lack of geographical spread is amazing. Apart from West Kerry there are only 2 players on the team from a club north of Kilcummin. That includes Tralee and the CBS got to the Munster Final. This should be checked out. It could be a positive, that there are a lot of good players from a few clubs but it could also be the opposite. Its a difficult one but the Corn Ui Mhuiri is no indicator being an under 18.5 competition - assume the majority of the lads have come through the various development squads and would be well known to management - the initial panel of 40+ was drawn up last October so would assume lads have had plenty of chances to show their worth.

Very fair and important point - even the county minor competitions I refer to are out of kilter in that they are U18. Perhaps the Frewen competition is a better pointer to the U17 county team than the Corn Ui Mhuiri or minor league.

This is a huge factor - there is now 18 months between the Corn Ui Mhuiri age limit and the "minor/U17" age limit, whereas it wasn't too many year back they had an identical age limit. A fair chunk of the lads named on this "minor" panel will probably be eligible to play Corn Ui Mhuiri for 2 more years.

What age group can compete in the county minor championship....the u 17 gang or it is based on the traditional u18 age group.
I hope its the u18 age limit as that would give 18 years something important to play for.

The Frewen and last year's U16 County championship and development squads are much better indicators now than the Corn ui mhuiri or minor championship. The problem is that this years Frewen saw Tralee knock out Corca Dhuibhne first day but now out next round, leaving the Sem a fairly clear run. Nonetheless this looks like a very good panel to me, from what I saw of those cometitions.

The County Board supported the move to U-17 in line with Croke Park but I think common sense prevailed - if introduced it would have meant that guys born in 2000 would have had NO competitive football this year other than schools football - not ideal for players.

Will the u17 thing work? No leaving cert student playing for Kerry tomorrow night. Kids championship now on a huge Croke Park stage. Time will tell.

Was the motivation not to reduce pressure on exam students?

Was the motivation not to reduce pressure on exam students? I believe that the real reason to change to U-17 was to bring these players back under the juvenile umbrella making them ineligible for adult grade.

One guy who is lighting it up at under 16 level is Gearoid Hassett Laune Rangers - a superb player who is racking up big scores at U16 level...and no I'm not related to the boy nor even from Laune Rangers before I am accused of bias here!
Not sure if he was called in for trials but I think he is a lovely player and worth a look at...

You're right another forward. He will definitely be on the Kerry u16 panel this year anyway. Calum Russell is another from Laune Rangers hes too young this year. He will be on the Kerry u15s. Laune Rangers are doing well at underage level.

Yeah Rangers seem to have a lot of good footballers starting to represent Kerry again - other tan Fiachra Clifford I would say they didn't have a minor for 10 years or so since Peter Crowley I guess...Hassett might be worth a call - Jack O Connor from Beaufort is in the minors and he is only U16 - another unreal talent.

Kerry breeze through to semis with emphatic win over Tipperary
Report by Eoghan Cormican for the Irish Examiner newspaper
Kerry 1-15 Tipperary 0-4
The Kerry minor footballers breezed into the semi-finals of the Munster championship with this emphatic victory over Tipperary.
The winners limited the hosts to one second-half point and it was game over when Tipperary suffered a double-blow on 41 minutes; Kevin Hayes, having conceded a penalty when fouling Ruaidhrí Ó Beaglaoích, was sent off having received a black card to go with his earlier yellow. Paul Walsh nailed the resulting spot kick to send Kerry into a 1-10 to 0-3 unassailable lead.
Captain Paul O’Shea, along with subs Dylan Geaney and Sean Quilter, closed out the win with a succession of points.
The visitors led 0-7 to 0-3 at the break and should have been further in front, with Tipperary goalkeeper Callan Scully producing two fine saves to deny Patrick D’Arcy and Jack Kennelly. Ruaidhrí Ó Beaglaoích had a third goal chance but blasted over from close range.
Tipperary had only one scorer in the first-half, Christy English, the Ballyporeen youngster kicking Tipperary’s one and only point from play in the first-half seven minutes in. Tipperary play Limerick in a playoff next Wednesday, last chance saloon for both sides.
