Quoting Spillane in today's Examiner re Dubs encounters of his era -
Mick O’Dwyer said, “We need to lay down a marker. We need to show we are not going to be bullied.” And, you know what, we did. We fought fire with fire. It was violent stuff. I broke my nose.
Now we have had laddos get burnt fingers at Ballythefireside, including the notable light fingered pair that was An Officer and A Gentleman, handling the hot property that was Ballythefireplace. But how you brake your nose in such circumstance Pat remains a pure mystery to even us!

What the hell is going on with Cork? Leading by 1 pt against Waterford with 8 mins to go. They'll probably get there but surely it shouldn't be this close?

Cork survive by the narrowest of margins! This has to be their lowest point surely ( I think Waterford started training 3 weeks ago!)...Tipp have to be favourites for the semifinal win now but surely Cork have to rise from here on? With the players Cork have, there must be something else going on there. Unbelievably poor.

Which of the following is a true statement...? (a) Cork have just gone to sh*te (b) It's a cunning ploy to lull Tipp into a false sense of security (c) They're on strike again

They're stuck in the 90s.

The only thing that seems to get Corks footballers out of a permanent state of ennui is the sight of the Kerry jersey.

I expect it to be a sort of wake up call for them and I expect they'll beat Tipp. If we play them in July we have to take them seriously, we can't have a repeat of 2015.

Cork need to get James Horan in to knock them into shape. I think he'd make them a top 6 team again. Donegal put them out last year - this was the same Donegal with an average age of about a 102 - the fact that half that Donegal team have since retired from intercounty says a world. Prior to that they had got past a 13 man Longford, thanks to 2 second-half goals. In the game before that they beat Limerick, but the fact was Limerick didn't win any game all year (either in league or championship) so it's not as if this was something to write home about. The game prior to that was the Tipp game (for the history buffs the last time Tipp had beaten Cork in football, Hitler was in charge in Germany) Throw in their relegation in the league and 2016 really was a banner year for the rebel footballers.

Bit of light entertainment from Kerry's best underrated player Is Maurice top of the charts for kicking scores off both legs?

Bit of light entertainment from Kerry's best underrated player Absolutely. Point taken. There are good footballers, there are great footballers and there are footballers that make an All Ireland their own - '97 (when history needed someone to stand up).

Maurice was as complete as joe canning is now in the skills stakes. There was no skill that he didnt perfect.
Hopefully joe will pick up a couple of all irelands towards the end of his career like maurice did.
While maurice was unlucky to arrive between great kerry teams, he was lucky to avoid the massed defense era that came with armagh and tyrone..how he would have coped with that is unknowable ....i suspect he would have operated around centre field.
That point shown in the clip in the 2000 final replay was a crucial score....he caught the kickout and belted it back over the bar. Kerry had kicked a rake of wides and that steadied the nerves

Maurice would possibly be even better now than he was then. Imagine the consternation on at the sidelines as he ruins your tactical planning by nonchalantly booming point after point from 50 yards over the heads of your massed defence.

Agree, the defensive holding possession game now would create oceans of space between the forty and 65 yards lines for a long distance shooter.

Listening to Radio Kerry yesterday I heard the Kerry u14 girls are playing the All-Ireland semi-final today. They are being captained by midfielder , Rachel Dwyer. Rachel is a daughter of Denis Dwyer and niece of Maurice Fitzgerald. Hard to find fault with that blood line!

An Ghaeltacht won Comortas na Peile today at their ease. Tomas Mac An tSaoir was very impressive in goals. Whatever happened Tomas as regards the Kerry panel?
That step dancing minor of three years ago , Tomas O'Se, sparkled in the corner scoring a couple of goals and points. Has he given up the dancing?
An Ghaeltacht seem to have a lot of good young lads coming up together.

You forgot to mention our good friend or should I say Paul Galvins friend Noelie O Leary. Should have got a red for his tackle on Marc but it eventually arrived when he almost decapitated a Ghaeltacht player. It was a great display and TOMAS O SE the dancer had a brilliant game. HE's second goal was a beauty.

Carlow, with a yellow hoop, make a decent job of a legible number on the jersey. So I thought anyway. The white on yellow of the current Kerry jersey is clearly a dead loss.

This issue has been highlighted so often and all pleas for something to be done have fallen on deaf ears - only reasonable conclusion is that it is tactical, probably hoping opposition and ref are confused also.

I think he has finished touring with Riverdance and is doing some dancing somewhere in Killarney for the tourists for the moment. Is Maurice top of the charts for kicking scores off both legs? I don't remember any other player being brilliant off the ground with both feet. Shane Walsh from Galway can kick frees off the ground with right and left foot. Not the same accuracy as Maurice I suspect. Walsh actually reminds me of Maurice in his style, skills, stride, etc.
