The irony is it might have gotten 6-8 thousand max in Killarney. When we were all ire champs in 2014, only 6 th went to league game following spring. The appeal this time is young Kerry team, unbeaten Dublin run, Kerry underdogs, bank holiday weekend, better venue, under lights, sat nite, pints! Lovely pints 😍

If only they'd built the stadium out in Ballybeggan that time. Non scramble for tickets, 20000 of us could all be in the bars in the stand til 6:55 and walk out onto our seats by thrown-in. And have beer and hotdogs (and prawn sandwiches if desired). Wouldnt have been as nice out there for the U21 game last night however. The Co. Board could have tried to purchase the 'left over' bit from the John Mitchels pitch. I posted this before. They could have retail units on the ground floor, and move the pavilion to that side, with a small terrace in front. You could then extend the stand on the Horans side. People rubbished it, but I am not talking a huge capacity ground, or another Killarney. A tight 20,000 size that would be great for home league games. Great idea but cost would be an issue - the cost of the upgrades done last year was an issue in getting that limited amount of work done. You also have the obvious issue of how often is ASP sold out as a venue and I think the Dublin league game is the first I can remember. The Ballybeggan move was 100% funded by the sale of the existing ground - it was a turnkey project typical of the Celtic Tiger era. The game has really attracted great interest for the many reasons listed by other.

Much prefer Tralee for league matches. killarney can be like Croke park for league matches. Spiritless. Against Cavan earlier in the year in Breffni park I think attendance was reported as 16000 . I was there and allowing for juveniles( who were free) there was easily 20 to 22 thousand . Locals were Iaughing how out numbered they were. I think if game was in a Killarney possibility of similar attendance, I wouldn't see more. Tralee sill be electric , make something unattainable and sure everyone will want a ticket.

Maybe, but on a similar vein. I much preferred going to a kerry Dublin league match in Parnell park than croke park. Everyone on top of the pitch. Just don't get the buzz on March in a large ground. I guess I'm just sentimental.

After last nights rugby game (similar to a bad Ulster Championship game IMO), I'd say there wont be too many problems getting people into Austin Stack Park on time next Saturday night.
And the only thing at this stage that could free up a few tickets is if CIE or Bus Eireann go on strike. All the Dubs with the free travel will be stranded then and too afraid to drive past Newlands Cross themselves!

It would be really inventive if a large screen was rolled out in front of the stand for the rugby match for the people that will arrive early for the game. If only they'd built the stadium out in Ballybeggan that time. Non scramble for tickets, 20000 of us could all be in the bars in the stand til 6:55 and walk out onto our seats by thrown-in. ASP is a delightul spot with great history etc virtually in the middle of town. I was glad the ballybeggan thing died. Money and tv are dictating timing of this game.

I feel dublin are six points a better team than kerry at the moment. Dublin are moving well and kerry look stuck in second gear. But playing in tralee might knock a few points off dublin as they might need a second or two to get their bearings compared to playing in croker.
For once kerry might get a sympathic ref and that could narrow the gap too.
But kerry look notably short on guys who can bully the opposition right now and you need that too at this level.
Three games left and no semblance of a defensive system like dublin, mayo and tyrone have. The next meaningful game after the end of the league looks like the end of august v mayo in the semi final.

A win on Saturday is unlikely for Kerry. The bigger picture is the important thing here. Another chance to continue blooding and trusting in the young players is the way to go. Remember Tomas being substituted in one of his first Munster finals. He didn't turn out too bad after. A fighting performance sat nite wud satisfy me. My bigger concern on a wholistic perspective is the lack of true Kerry style we are playing with. I'd be concerned that EF is way too defence minded even to the point where he's playing the likes of j Lyne and Paul Murphy in the forwards.

Philip Jordan: Kerry need defensive improvements if they want to win Sam
Updated / Wednesday, 8 Mar 2017 16:09 14
When most of the top teams are rebuilding they can be expected to reach the All-Ireland quarter-finals and maybe win the odd provincial title. That’s not good enough for Kerry.
The Kingdom have been rebuilding for the past two or three years, maybe even since before they won the Sam Maguire in 2014, but they still expect All-Ireland titles down there.
They are definitely in the top four teams in the country, along with Mayo, Tyrone and then Dublin still a fair bit ahead of everyone else, and I wouldn’t write any of those off from winning Sam Maguire.
Kerry though aren’t in the top two, I’d have them behind Mayo and a bit ahead of Tyrone, and that’s not something that’s been said about them very often so they don’t top my list of contenders.
Marc Ó Sé and Aidan O’Mahony have both retired with no one stepping straight into their boots and it’s in defence that they are feeling the loss of experienced players most.
Kerry like to play a certain way and even though they have become more defensive like everyone else, they were able to rely on the best forwards in the country.
They don’t have the best forwards in the country any more either so they are going to have to pay more attention to their defensive set-up.
Not having the best man-markers around isn’t as important as it was in the past at the back - I don’t know can I even mention five out-and-out man-markers any more. Lads in the full-back line can play a risker game now and challenge for the ball knowing that the cover is there.
That means that you can survive without the best defenders if you perfect the system and that’s what Eamonn Fitzmaurice will be spending most of his time on the training ground these days.
Up front they will still be relying heavily on the Gooch and Kieran Donaghy come the summer. Paul Geaney stepped up a lot last year and he will be a big player for them this season even given a slow start to the League and James O’Donoghue needs to come back in to his best form after all his injury troubles.
They haven’t won an All-Ireland Under-21 since 2008 so they will be looking for their successful minors from the past few years to step up. Tyrone have had plenty of minor success and haven’t been consistently able to transfer that up to Under-21 and on to senior. Under-21 is definitely the better All-Ireland to win and that’s something the Kingdom will want to do this year.
In the past a place in Division 1’s top four was enough to book a League semi-final, but the GAA have done away with them so only the top two will go through to the final. With that in mind Kerry will want to win all of their remaining games to start a bit of momentum.
They have some tough games coming up, including Dublin and Tyrone at home.
If they go and lose those they could find themselves in a relegation fight alongside Roscommon and Cavan and that would see them going into the summer in a negative frame of mind. If they can swing that around, win those two games and make the League final they will take big positives out of the springtime.
Some people like to say that Kerry have it easy and go straight into an All-Ireland quarter-final every year, but this is a disadvantage too. If they don’t get momentum in the League, it can be hard to build it before they get to Croke Park and that’s something that will be weighing on Eamonn Fitzmaurice’s mind.
And I’d hope that no one is thinking that I’m just having a pop at Kerry here, because that’s not the case. In Tyrone we always had the height of respect for Kerry and their players - we rated them as the best and to win an All-Ireland we had to beat them.
I made great friends with a few of their lads over the years on International Rules trips and Tomás Ó Sé was good enough to come up to my club Moy for a special night they held after myself and Ryan Mellon, which I really appreciated.
I have never been on my holidays to Killarney, but I might go for the weekend to see the last League match against Tyrone. I’m not sure yet whether I’ll pull a cap down over my face to try to avoid drawing attention to myself or maybe get Tomás to smuggle me into the ground!

When Eamon took over we were all talking about Jack O'Connor and how the team were dealing with the blanket defence. We were playing excellent football, but in 2010 it was Down that surprised us, in 2011 it was Dublin who outsmarted us towards the end and in 2012 it was Donegal's defensive structure that we couldn't break down. In 2013 it was again Dublin who outsmarted us, again destroying us towards the end of the game. Eamon changed Kerry's style of play in 2014 and we played more defensively. It lead to the 2014 title and we were discussing here whether Kerry should change the way we play. At the same time Jack O'Connor has been winning titles with the minors playing the typical Kerry style and I still think that is the way we should be playing. Our club teams are successful playing the Kerry way, as are our minors, Hogan cup teams, corn uí mhuirí teams and so on. It is the way players learn to play when they are young and the way they grow up playing the game. Dublin are reaping the benefits of 20 years of development. Clubs all over the county have been focusing on the core skills and they have been building the structures for years. Regardless of where players live and work and where we train, we are playing catch up. Kerry are still producing the best footballers in Ireland, of that I am convinced, but in my opinion we have been focused too much on defence and systems. We play games with 12, 13 men behind the ball as well now, yet teams still run at us and score points. Why do we focus so much on defence and still don't get it right? We had 2, 3 players on the bench in the last few games with experience at full back and they were not even used. In the half back line we are playing Crowley in a role he doesn't seem to like very much. The result being that he needs to outmuscle his opponent or push him or pull him back. By comparison we have Griffin who loves to go forward and puts pressure on the opposition half backs because they constantly have to run backwards. We have some excellent backs and given the amount of talent that is coming up via the minors and the U21s we should be looking at backs that perform a lot better than they currently do as a unit. With the juniors too we are outscoring teams and are defending very well. We seem to be training at the moment to play a certain system, but it is not working and I'm not sure if the players are convinced about the system. One thing that has been clear in the league this year is frustration. I don't know if players are being told to play a certain way or if they're working on something in training, but it is clear that players seem frustrated. Sometimes things just don't work out, but Eamon seems reluctant to make the changes. In the Roscommon game Jonathan Lyne came on for Young, who seems to have a slight injury, meaning we had no more fullback. Would Gavin Crowley not have been a better option, given that he played full back at minor and U21 level? What is the point of having him on the bench if he never gets any time on the ball? The same with Denis Daly who is just warming the bench. If Eamon doesn't want to play them then get them off the bench. I wouldn't blame the two of they get really frustrated by now. Why have Cathal Ó Lúing there, another player with experience at full back, if he's not getting any time at all? I'm definitely not calling for Eamon's head, but whatever we are doing is not working (yet). Maybe it is part of a plan, but Kerry need to get back to winning ways.

Since 2000, only twice have Kerry either not won or lost to someone who didn't go on to win the AI.
From 2011-2016 - 2014 excluded - Kerry have lost to the eventual champs.

Not so sure a chairde, but regardless you raise a key point, i.e. at what age point do you bring out the hoor in fellas? IMO the margin in the '14 minor AI final was much less than the difference in the teams, and it is only headed one way- JackO'C says he'll get 'bata agus bothar' if he goes there. Donaghy suggested we need to take the game to the opposition in this respect as for too long we are doing it in defensive mode, dragged through the bushes back ways. We are tough and while a lot goes on the eye doesn't pick up, I think we need to toughen up a bit more. AO'M and the O'6s would be my role models here - i.e. they don't start it but they can finish it.

Once Eir get you on board they try top screw you again, the header games are deferred on Eir 1 while the side show is live, nail for another €240 for Eir 2 to see Dublin v Mayo and Dublin v Kerry live, and where the sideshow is shown later. The GAA is a sad organisation that they surrendered control of who sees OUR games. Like free to view made Munster Rugby, it will ruin GAA games long term as youngsters watch something else. Lose 'em young and it is too late when you realise tour mistake. I cannot believe people are happy about this.

Paddy andrews, JOD etc need to be put in possession so a well organised tight defence should handle them. As for annascauls post about stats..well you would expect kerry to be in the top three every year.... Big population twice the amount of lots of others, in a hurling province, only a small pocket of hurling, tradition. Our superior forwards always pulled us through against tactical opponents. As philip jordan says... We dont have the best forwards any more. But defensively we are behind too....behind dublin, mayo and probably tyrone. Was it ever that way as regards tactics Kerry have always been reactionary. Maybe thats a good thing in the long run... I dont know
