thegaelicgame.wordpress.com/...edical-advice/Not Kerry related i know, but such a shame. His displays in 2010 were some of the best, and i always felt he should have won FOTY. Its a bigger shame we didn't get to see more of him other than the two seasons he played. Could have been one of the all time greats. I cant help but feel Down would have at least won an Ulster title had he been arpund for the last 10 years or so.

A serious player, an awful pity. You are right, he had the potential to be one of the greats.

Very sad to hear this, a joy to watch. Did he get injured in Oz?

Very sad to hear this, a joy to watch. Did he get injured in Oz? Had to retire due to a medical condition called Addison's disease according to the radio. A sublime footballer.

Seems to be Kennelly's sidekick in Ireland? Not the time, nor the place

Not the time, nor the place Every time and every place is the time and place to have a whinge for some people. To play advocate of the devil; Marty Clarke has been smart enough to get more out of his AFL career by assisting during the recruitment drives. You can't blame any player in an amateru sport for wanting to become a professional athlete. I can't remember people here complaining much when it was Laois, Down and Derry players moving down south or the uproar when Ciaran Kilkenny was poached. Most of the players drafted into the rookie draft don't make it into the AFL proper and many that do get delisted after one or two seasons. It is very, very tough to break into a professional career otherwise everyone could do it. Marty Clarke is an exceptional player and that is why he made the draft. If he had stayed injury free he could have had an excellent season down under in 2008. Much has been made of the injuries to GAA players that move to the AFL, but the same is true in football where demands are getting tougher and tougher and injuries become more and more common. Marty is and was an amazing athlete and if he does find a professional career as a recruiter for the AFL, much like Kennelly's role, I wish him all the best. Players get poached by other sports as well and Cork could be complaining just as much about losing O'Leary and Sweetnam. I wonder how many players the GAA has poached away from other sports as there are plenty of footballers that could have been real stars in other codes as well. I'm sure Darran and Gooch would have made excellent professional soccer players if they had concentrated on that.

You're not playing devil's advocate- well either that or you don't fully understand the phrase nor the context of why I said it wasn't the place. This is a thread about a lad who has had to retire early due to a medical condition- a bit more class needs to be shown

This is a thread about a lad who has had to retire early due to a medical condition- a bit more class needs to be shown I meant regarding it not being the time and space to mention his AFL career at all. I don't think there is any football fan in ireland that doesn't think Marty Clarke is a great player and thinks it is unfortunate he has to retire. His AFL career is part of his stature though and forms part of his reputation. Though the "kennelly's side kick" comment is somewhat misplaced it is not hard to see how he might be able to make a career out of recruiting for the AFL. Whatever he does I hope he will have success. Just as I'm delighted for Kennelly that he has found a job after his playing days that combines the things he loves most. It is sad that such a talented player won only 1 All Star award (2010). Clarke comes from one of the nicest parts in the country, within the Kingdom of Mourne, where the Mountains reach Carlingford Lough in the most southernmost and most southeasterly point of Northern Ireland. Hailing from the An Ríocht club he was a huge Down talent from early on. Down came very close to winning the 2010 final and probably deserved it as much as Cork that year. Marty probably would have walked onto any county team in the country and would have excelled in any sport.
