Hi guys just wondering what u21s have the best chance of having a role for the seniors in the championship this summer? My guess would be Shane Ryan, Brian O'Beoigleach, Jason Foley, Gavin White, Andrew Barry, Sean O'Shea and Killian Spillane. Also, what's the story with Matthew O'Sullivan, did he play minor and how good is he?

A key stat for everyone to keep in mind Only 7 teams who have won the All-Ireland minor football championship have gone on to win the U21 championship 3 years later - that's out of 53 years where there has been an U21 championship and Kerry have never done it. I make it out to have happened 10 times...with Cork having done it 5 times, Mayo twice, and Tyrone, Meath and Derry getting it done once each. My review is based on wikipedia records by the way, so usual disclaimers apply. I count it as 9 - can only see Cork doing it 4 times (67/70, 68/71, 81/84, 91/94). Cork also lost the minor decider twice but went in the win the corresponding U21 title. Equally interesting - Only three times has the same pairing contested the minor and corresponding u21 final (out of 55 years of u21) with the same winner on two and one reversal of the minor result. Our great minor team of 1975 failed to win the 1978 u21 final when the county was going for 4 in a row u21 titles. Final stat on this for now of the 110 teams who made it to the minor final in the period 1961-2016 only 24 have played in the u21 final three years later - only three counties in the last 15 years have done this out of a possible 30. Tip your cap to the past but roll up those sleeves and dig in for the future....

As we're Reeling in the years as it were, we won a minor in 1994 and U-21's in 95/96. Did many of that minor team win U-21 medals, say in 96 when they may have been 20 or so?
I know we got surprisingly few Seniors from that minor team, just curious to know about they had U-21 successes or not...
(And yes I know one of those few we got was Mike Frank who was worth his weight in gold anyday..........)

A winning minor team usually comes from a strong panel with strength in debth. Great senior players often come from teams that are defeated as minors, eg 1972, 1993 and 2001.

No Mick, the only player there remotely close to U21 is last year's captain, Stephen Cronin, but he is overage now. Seán Powter and Michael Hurley are the only two in and around the senior setup likely to be involved, but many of the team/panel who lost last year's All Ireland final are available again, at least nine or ten plus. P.S.- those ratings above must be out of 100.

6 Starters from Dingle - great representation for a club. And that is without "TheAussie" and the injured Mr Begley. Killian Spillane on the bench is probably the main surprise.

In all probability, not likely to be seriously tested until they visit Cork on March 29th, no disrespect to Clare and W'ford intended. As pointed out earlier, Cork have as many as 10 of last years side who reached the final and will no doubt be pumped up on so many levels. With the All Ireland final taking place on April 29th, it is essentially 5 games in 8 weeks for counties lucky enough to get that far so luck with and management of injuries and/or suspensions will play a considerable part in such a short window.

Quite a few players that played with the seniors in the league and/or trained with the senior panel. Seriously frightening forwards. But.. with Foley and the two Tom O'Sullivans we probably have the best fullback line we have had for years. Given how impressive Sean O'Shea has been with Kenmare you'd expect him to be well marked by Cork as getting ball to the full forward line is something Cork will be hoping to stop, have to stop. Lot of talent on the bench as well, which is good as well as in previous years Cork has held a few people back as well to bring on later in the game. Same like last year when Kerry were on top they brought on their subs and got a narrow win. Hopefully Killian isn't carrying an injury and will be fully fit when he comes in. So much talent on that bench as well to bring on.

As a matter of interest and given that Dingle have 6 starting stars, how much soccer is played back West? What many don't realise but soccer is at least as prominent as 'The Gaelic' across Donegal - so I'm trying to learn if there are any underlying trends here. Does Gaelic football get stronger the further south in the county we go?, is it more prominent in rural, i.e. more soccer in towns?

Think Dingle won the Premier A Denny League (first division all Kerry senior league) last year. A lot of lads try playing both codes over the winter months.

I don't know the ethnicity aspect if there is one but geographically they are certainly out on a limb.

In Donegal shinty was the dominant game like in Scotland. I would argue though that shinty derives from hurling and was brought to Scotland by the Scottii. After all Scotland is the land of the Irish and hurling is common in the mythology of Scotland.

Great u21 team on paper anyway. Cork are obviously keeping their u21s away from the seniors as they fancy going all the way. The best football games of the years are likely to be in this u21 All Ireland championship. Every game a winner takes all. The best way.

Way off thread here but just on the origins of hurling theme - genetic profiling confirms a strong link to the Cornish people. However by far our strongest genetic link is to the Basque people of Northern Spain (same for Welsh people apparently). In the 9000 years since our land has been settled there have been several influxes of peoples with links back to an Egyptian gene pool in the earliest days. A facinating story (genetics) in its own right.
