Fixtures for the Munster Hurling League
2017 Co-Op Superstores Munster Hurling League
Round 1 Cork Kerry 8/1 Mallow Round 1 Waterford Limerick 8/1 Walsh Park Waterford Round 2 Limerick Cork 15/1 Gaelic Grounds Limerick Round 2 Clare Kerry 15/1 Austin Stack Park Tralee Round 3 Clare Limerick 18/1 Sixmilebridge Round 3 Cork Waterford 18/1 Mallow Round 4 Waterford Clare 22/1 Walsh Park Waterford Round 4 Limerick Kerry 22/1 Gaelic Grounds Limerick Round 5 Waterford Kerry 25/1 Austin Stack Park Tralee Round 5 Clare Cork 25/1 Sixmilebridge Final 29/1
Manager situation needs to get sorted pronto.
Away to Cork and Limerick, home games against Clare and Waterford.
The Clare game will be a double-header with the McGrath Cup football game against Cork I'd assume (both fixed for Austin Stack Park on the same day)
Tipp have opted out of this's year - format is a league with the top two teams in the final.

The McGrath Cup game v Cork is fixed for Mallow as far as I know. You are correct - It's the McGrath Cup v Tipp that's on the 8th in Tralee, the McGrath Cup game v Cork is on the the 15th in Mallow. Apologies for the confusion.

Disappointing result yesterday. Shows even in pre season there's a huge gap for Kerry to make up. Will have to get off to a winning with in the league if we're to stay up

Wouldnt be too worried about yesterdays result, missing a good few of our strongest starting 15 and were up against a Limerick team that are repairing the damage of the hammering Cork gave them

But the worry is there's no back up. As I've said before have players from South Kerry even been looked at? I wonder does the management even know there are players from outside North Kerry? On the subject of South Kerry, what's happened with Corkes players? For a few years they always had 2/3 players on the minors yet very few seemed to even play U21. Where have Patrick O'Keeffe for example gone?

Strong Kerry team named and one would expect a fairly strong Waterford team as well. I would expect Shane Bennett to start again and some other youngsters. I can't see Kerry winning, but who knows. As hurlingman pointed out we seem to have a very good team, but no back up. We can match teams for 50 minutes, but once they bring on subs we dwindle. I guess that's why so many inexperienced players faced Limerick, but I'm not sure we found enough new players. Then again Waterford are looking for youth as well in the MHL. Maybe, just maybe we can win this.

Allowing 6 subs has contributed hugely to the final twenty minutes of a lot of gaa games becoming one sided and boring...with the bigger panels having better subs...

Munster Senior Hurling League Full Time Kerry 0-15 Waterford 4-21 A big issue both this and last year is the amount of goals that are being shipped in games with the bigger teams. In the last 4 games i think there's been at least 4 goals scored by the other teams.

The goals seems to come at beginning of the halves as opponents come out to blitz Kerry or towards the end of games as subs come on. Kerry just don't have enough great subs to bring on in response. Once Kerry settle into games they do quite well, but to progress any further more hurlers are needed and more structure. Given how many managers Kerry had the last few years it is remarkable there is any structure at all. Hopefully we can settle a bit and get more hurlers in from around the county as hurling is played outside of north Kerry as well. More and more competitive games are needed and Kerry are getting that at the moment.

With Stacks making the move up to Intermediate fom what I've been told and with the young players they've got in maybe a few can come from there. The key is getting young players from south kerry playing at a higher level. As i've said before Kenmare and kilgarvin should be entering minor, U21 and senior championship as South Kerry. Crokes and St Pats in at least senior and minor or U21 if possible. Leaving Stacks and Daugh together. There's no point whatsoever in having them all as one South KErry team as it would be next to impossible to have training etc. There could be room for a Crokes, St Pats and Tralee Pranells team at minor and U21 level

Throw in time is 2.00p.m. and it is hoped that the Kerry hurling public will come out and support the team. Admission tickets on the day cost €15 but they are available at a reduced price of €12 if purchased online on www.gaa.ie or at any of the participatin Centra or Supervalu Stores including all Garveys Supervalu stores up to midnight on Friday. Juveniles under 16 have free admission. Kerry have had a tough Munster league campaign during January but it will serve them well in the weeks ahead. Unfortunately Kerry may be missing up to five members of the panel due to injuries for Sunday. The O'Leary brothers, Michael (back) and Brendan (stress fracture of the ankle) will be out for four to six weeks; Tommy Casey has a wrist injury that may see him miss most of the League campaign, John Egan is recovering from a knock that will see him miss the opening game and Rory Horgan is a doubt due to a hamstring issue. However there is full confidence that squad on duty will acquit themselves well on Sunday and win 2 very important league points. The Kerry team will be announced on Friday night after training and will be posted on the Kerry GAA Website. Kerry inflict more pain on Laois 2 Monday, February 13, 2017Mortimer Murphy, Austin Stack Park Allianz HL Division 1B Kerry 3-14 Laois 0-19
Kerry staged a staggering second-half comeback to make it three wins in two years over Laois in this crucial Allianz Hurling League 1B clash, played before a sparse attendance.
A Kerry victory looked unlikely at the break as they trailed by nine points but three second-half goals turned the tie on its head.
Laois travelled to Austin Stack Park, Tralee with new manager and former Kerry hurling manager Eamonn Kelly back on familiar territory.
They played with the aid of a strong wind in the first-half and led at the interval by 0-13 to 0-4 thanks to four points from play by corner-forward Willie Dunphy.
Kerry’s first and only score from play came from Shane Nolan in the 29th minute and they were in trouble in most sectors with Stephen Maher punishing them from placed balls.
The second-half was a different story however. Kerry dominated the middle third and looked much the hungrier side.
Their half-back-line of Paud Costello, Patrick Kelly and Darren Dineen really upped their game while Mikey Boyle started plucking balls out of the air. Kerry had missed five scoreable frees in the opening half but once Shane Nolan found his radar, Laois appeared to lose their way.
Padraig Boyle scored Kerry’s first goal from a penalty in the 38th minute and he added another in the 59th minute from play. That was quickly followed in the 60th minute by a third Kerry goal from midfielder Colum Harty to make the scores level on a scoreline of 3-9 to 0-18.
Kerry finished much the stronger and sealed the win with a late Paudie O’Connor point to give them a welcome winning start to the League, much to the delight of new Kerry manager Fintan O’Connor.
“What we’re looking for is quality and I saw Tipperary manager Michael Ryan saying last night at this time of year you won’t see a lot of quality but what we’re looking for is a lot of honesty and endeavour. It was really cold out there but you want the lads to have the right attitude.
"I thought we did better on the breaks in the second-half and we were just a little bit sharper. We’re delighted with the win and to get the two points and we know we have some tough challenges ahead.”
Kelly was disappointed having looked set for victory at the interval. “We are disappointed but the better team won on the day. We did not score enough from play but we are a young side and some of Kerry’s more experienced players shone in the second-half. We will just have to regroup for the challenges ahead.”
Scorers for Kerry:
P Boyle (2-1, 1-0 pen); S Nolan (0-6, 5 frees); C Harty (1-2); M Boyle and D Collins (0-2 each); P O’Connor (0-1)
Scorers for Laois:
S Maher (0-11 frees); W Dunphy (0-4); P Whelan, B Conroy, N Foyle and P J Scully (0-1 each).
KERRY:
A McCabe; S Weir, R Horgan, B Murphy; P Costello, P Kelly, D Dineen; P O’Connor , C Harty ; J Goulding, M Boyle , D Collins ; J Conway, P Boyle , S Nolan.
Subs:
K Carmody for J Conway (53), J O’Connor for J Goulding (72)
LAOIS:
E Fleming: D Palmer, R Mullaney, P Lawlor; L Bergin, M Whelan, P Whelan; P Purcell, Ben Conroy; C Taylor, N Foyle , R King; W Dunphy, C Dwyer, S Maher
Subs:
PJ Scully for C Taylor (57), E Lyons for P Whelan (60), S Downey for R Mullaney (63), C Healy for N Foyle (66)
Referee:
J Murphy ( Limerick).

Two years in a row nw beating Eamonn Kelly since he left Kerry. Padraig Boyle's return should bring some much needed scoring up front this year, more over with John Egan retiring. We've been very dependent on Share Nolan from frees so Boyle should take a bit of pressure off him.

So John Egan retires from inter county hurling. His medal haul is pretty impressive too. Minor, U21 and Senior Kerry championship in hurling 2 Christy Ring Cup medals. Played shinty for Ireland 1 Kerry junior football medal and 1 junior All Ireland medal 2 Kerry intermediate football medals and 2 intermediate All Ireland medal. He was the man when the moment looked for one. He got a ridiculous goal in injury time when two points behind in the semi final of the junior football All Ireland. He got the winning point against Antrim to promote Kerry in Parnell Park a few years ago , and i will always remember his final two points from distance v Lixnaw for Ardfert to draw the hurling final the year Ardfert won the hurling championship. Hopefully, he will play on in both codes for a few more years.

Had it been another era would have been more than good enough to have played both codes with Kerry

Egan a real livewire footballer and all the more when you consider he spent so much time hurling
A loss to the Kerry hurlers as he still had a contribution to make. Best of luck to him in his decision. He has given serious service to the county hurlers. Ardfert footballers and St Brendans hurlers will benefit from him not having the county commitments. He seems determined to land more honours at club level
