Compensation packages won't make up for the loss of stellar prospects. If anything, such a system might only encourage cash-strapped clubs to tout their top players to the Aussies.

Would a fee not contravene the amateur status of the GAA and also leave clubs open to inspection from Revenue? I don't see how accepting fee for poaching could be reconciled with the strict amateur ethos of the Association.

Fitz could take a stand by banning county players from having anything to do with the compromise rules. He wouldn't need to make a public declaration either; just let it be known within the county that any player making themselves available won't be enhancing their prospects of a green and gold geansaí going forward.

Thought he had been there longer. Colm Begley has had a decent intercounty career, but I suppose there isn't that big a sample to choose from. Michael Quinn was very good for a year or two after coming back, but don't know quite how long he was away either. Paul Cribbin was there for a couple of years and is a good footballer since coming back. Haven't heard anything much about Caolan Mooney since he came back, or the McKeever lad from Antrim (?) either. Marty Clarke was sick since coming home the second time I think.

David Moran was in oz for about a month. I think the answer to David's injuries are found a bit closer to home.

David Moran was in oz for about a month. I think the answer to David's injuries are found a bit closer to home. I had it in my mind that he was longer that that he got a back injury there. This bit is from two years ago ##################### David Moran: Life in Australia is not all it's cracked up to be Moran will be part of the Ireland International Rules squad which departs for Australia tomorrow morning Just as he did in the aftermath of Kerry’s last All-Ireland success, David Moran will board a flight bound for Melbourne tomorrow morning. Five years ago he was leaving with Kerry team-mate Tommy Walsh, who had been signed by St Kilda. Moran was travelling for a trial and, after a couple of weeks, he was told he wouldn’t be kept on. He came home and concentrated on his education and nailing down a spot in the Kerry team though two cruciate ligament ruptures dramatically impeded his progress until he emerged from nowhere at the latter end of this year’s Championship. He turned in a series of towering displays from the quarter-final stages on and finished the season with an All-Ireland and an All-Star. This earned him a place on the Ireland International Rules squad which departs for a training camp in Melbourne tomorrow ahead of the one-off Test match with Australia in Perth on Saturday week. Meanwhile, Walsh’s AFL career stalled too often for it to be sustainable and he will return home in the near future after a severe hamstring injury essentially wrecked his chances with the Sydney Swans. Moran said: “I only had a small taste of it, a couple of weeks. I’d be talking to Tommy every day or every second day and it’s not always as good as it cracked up to be. James McCarthy, David Moran, Aidan Walsh and Aidan O'Shea at International Rules training “It’s a very tough environment – when it’s going great it’s great, and when it’s not going well it can be a very tough place to be. “I’m happy with my own career at the moment and naturally as a Gaelic footballer, you’d love to be doing it full-time. “I was very keen to get signed up but it was a case of, ‘We’ll monitor your progress over the next year and come back to you next year’ but I just had to make a call. “I had to go back to college and finish my degree. I gave it a go, it didn’t work out, it was time to get on with my life.” Moran says he won’t necessarily be using the upcoming Test as an opportunity to show his former coaches what they’re missing. He said: “I haven’t really been thinking about it. I’ve been thinking about the chance to wear an Irish jersey and I’m just trying to win the Test for Ireland. Anything after that is a bonus. “I’m happy in my own mind I gave it everything I had. Whether I wasn’t good enough or it didn’t work out, that’s life. “I’ve moved on and I’m happy playing with Kerry. This year couldn’t have worked out better.” Essendon’s Brendon Goddard and Nick Riewoldt, the current St Kilda captain, are players he rubbed shoulders with during his brief period at the club and it is likely he will be in action against them in Perth. Moran said: “They were huge players at the club when I was there. It would be great to play against them and test your wares against them.”

Would a fee not contravene the amateur status of the GAA and also leave clubs open to inspection from Revenue? No i don't think so,Tralee Dynamos received i think it was €50,000 when Darren Dennehy signed for Everton and they are an amateur club. Compensation packages won't make up for the loss of stellar prospects. If anything, such a system might only encourage cash-strapped clubs to tout their top players to the Aussies. If you asked any Dingle man would he rather have a player of Marc O Connor's calibre for the next 2/3 years or €20,000 for the club? I think they would all rather have the boy at home but a legacy payment where they could invest in a set of floodlights or a new dressing room or a gym would at least soften the blow.

people forget that Tadhg himself, was one of our greatest ever prospects....if he wasnt pulling the strings here, they would end up going anyway. i was involved in a trial game around 2000 for heading to australia so its not like its just arrived now and suddenly is an issue. Tadhg is getting stuck he certainly doesnt deserve. My heart bleats for Kennelly for any stick he might be getting for his role in the poaching of the cream of the next Kerry crop. 3 players gone over in 18 years - one came back after a very quick spell, the second isnt even known to most kerry pelple and the other is just going there now. thats hardly a huge issue as is being made out. every other major country has had a very good player going over there, some have had 2. we are making it out as if we are the only ones with an issue and its being made out to be far worse than it actually is. weve put about 45 minors through Croke park in the last 3 years - all bar one are available for selection for the u-21s this year.

By far the best of the 45 and may tilt that particular u21 shot in the new year and also could start a trend in the traffic down under. I'm not as flippant about Kerry football as others.

With respect, a compensation package is not a runner, trust me. I am surprised though that successful businessmen haven't impressed upon GAA HQ and given leadership as it is a no brainer, we are dancing with the devil incarnate! I'd really like to know why,Both associations have close ties,They have the International Rules,It would be the AFL's benefit to keep the "production line" sweet,I;m not talking about millions but say €20,000 for a player if he plays a competitive match. What you suggest is logical but it demeans us that we would take money for family silver, a sell out, the GAA HQ isn't that bad though in promoting the compromise rules series again this year they are crazy IMO. It sure gives a new meaning to the term 'comproMISE', we are compromising a superior game with towering emotional wherewithal to a code that is simply not in our league. I think we have enough to be doing to get our own code right in terms of black card, mark, etc and there is serious untapped potential here if we get it right. I think the GAA should make the proper implementation of the Black Card the priority for 2017 and hopefully the Mark doesn't distract from that.

My heart bleats for Kennelly for any stick he might be getting for his role in the poaching of the cream of the next Kerry crop. I think there are two aspects to it, firstly it is fact that they couldn't have a better placed scout/recruiter than Tadhg as he has interchanged between the codes and he is from a famous Kerry GAA family. Many see Kerry as the home of Gaelic football and those who live outside the county will be more aware of the latter. I know Kerry fellas who would be seen as experts in other counties while at home in Kerry they'd be told to sit in the corner and stay quiet. It is also true that the syphoning of our pipeline is getting more serious by the day and unless there are big changes you will see the top players from each county opting to go even before they achieve the status that Mark has. The second aspect is how the GAA should respond and it is clear to me that we need to distance ourselves from that code is so far as we can, and the first step is to call time on the compromise rules series. What is unusual is that GAA HQ would normally be seen as conservative yet here they are exposing the game to a threat that we have no defense against, and all for mysterious reason. I personally thought the world of Tadhg and even penned a poem on his achievement, but I am wiser now as I see how vicious they can be when it comes down to competing with the GAA for talent. I don't blame Tadhg though I am rather disappointed that he would spearhead the raid and that alone will have more fellas saying well if he is making money out of it then so can I. Can anyone tell me what benefit there is from the compromise rules series? Maybe I am missing something here? I should also have mentioned that having won the last 3 AI minor finals make's Kennelly's pivotal position all the more threatening. THE WARNING BELLS ARE RINGING BIG TIME.

I don't think David was even there for a month. He only went on some sort of trial anyway, and didn't come back injured either because he was playing for Strand Road the following day.

The most successful underage team for the last 3 years of course he is going to have a look. Jesus if Man United won the FA youth Cup 3 years in a row you would expect other clubs to eye up some of their players. The reality is that we are loosing players here and there. As some one else said since the mid 90's who have we lost? Padraig Lucey, Tommy Walsh and Mark O'Connor? Am I missing anyone? As for compensation, thats a good idea. I have no clue if it could work in reality. Its not like a player has a contract with his club? It would be a voluntary thing. As for the international rules I have no issue with it. I have no real interest in it but, the players seem to like the game and you can make yourself unavailable for it if you want. Any of the players playing in it are too old to be picked up by an Aussie club. In the same timeframe as us cork have had Michael Sheilds and Ciaran Sheehan as well as Setanta head out. its not a Kerry problem.

My point is that for no benefit we are taking a chance that fells won't be encouraged to travel. As regards compensation, forget it, an amateur sport taking money for live exports.

I don’t think anyone is saying whether Kennelly is a good scout or a bad scout or doing what goes on in soccer. It’s the fact that he is a scout at all. The GAA is built on voluntary effort. A whole range of people are involved in helping with teams etc. Ex-players continuously say they “want to give something back”. If people are not in a position to get involved that is ok too. The last thing we need is an ex-player - one of our own - scavenging (for financial benefit) on the voluntary efforts of others.

Mark like Tommy and Tadhg will cost us AI finals, have we lost 3/4 already, recent finals were tight affairs and that's they way it will be. External factors like globalisation will increase the risk of avalanche; now maybe I'm cautions type on these matters but God forbid that things would turn out at the worst end of the scale, and there is a tone of finality here, there would be no going back. And I know this is long term but Tadhg was a 3rd generation star, bus his sons will be more likely to play down under. Yes, John Egan's son plays soccer and Mick Galwey was lost bto Rugby, and while globalised media also plays a role, at least GAA facilities weren't used and we didn't get into bed with them like we are doing with Oz. I am all for fellas doing as they please, travel far and wide and realise their potential, and like all others on here I'd be proud of them as GAA lads to do well in any code, but the GAA shouldn't be seen to be opening the exits.

Thanks be to God we are at the end of November and only a month to go before football begins shaking off the cobwebs and gentles us back with Mc Grath Cup action. This thread is becoming tiresome - good luck to Mark and any other who go, lets get our house in order and focus on what we can control and cherish the players we have at our disposal - local injuries and immigration have cost us more than the Ozzies and is still the biggest risk going forward. Make sure anybody who goes fully appreciates the risks and what they are leaving behind and lets get on with working with those who stay. I want to rip that Sam Maguire from the tentacles of those city slickers - I want more, I want the minors to do whats never been done before and win four in a row in the last year of the u18 grade and yes I want Kerry to emmulate the class of 75 and win the treble (will take junior to go one better). Cant wait................

Who is the Kerry minor that is supposedly 'about to sign' with Tadhg's gang? There won't be any more contracts signed this year as players can only actually sign contracts with the clubs during the draft season, which mainly takes place in October & November (not sure when the official end date for the draft period is but pretty sure everything is done and dusted now) However I have heard talk of one Kerry minor who might be going to Florida in early 2017 for a combine being held there and I have heard talk of other players being courted/chased/bothered with offers of trips to Oz and the like. All of this is just talk for the moment though and for young lads of 17/18/19 a few months is a long stretch of time, never mind almost a year, so I won't be losing any sleep for the time being, nor will I be posting any names on a public forum.

The combine is taking place as outlined in Florida in January with some of our all Ireland minor winners apparently committed to going on that trip. All expenses paid trip to the sun in Jan- whats not to like about it?

I didn't hear a single begrudger and GAA folk are universally happy for Mark and which is good stuff. What people have an issue with though is GAA facilities being used by the pirates and many also feel that the compromise rules is inviting them upon us, the latter which I agree with 100%. I can't why GAA HQ don't see through this, it is a no brainer. The Sky deal further questions the current GAA leadership and they appear to be out of sync with informed opinion on these two key issues. I would also question why they haven't been able to get referees to implement the black card and which turned an ideal solution into a complete farce, a tragic comedy.
