It is depressing cause you need good players coming from South Kerry. They always had players on good Kerry teams. Hopefully it gets better. Jamie O'Sullivan from Waterville is a good forward has a chance of making the Kerry minor panel next year alright but there is not much after that.

South Kerry football is going through a very tough spell at that age group of u16 and minor. a few very lean years ahead. but just to give you an idea of the problems facing the clubs , between all 8 clubs in the district there are in and around 38 footballers at u15 and u16 levels. thats an average of less than 5 per club..... I imagine most of the big clubs have that many on their own at u16 level Feck but that's a depressing statistic Possibly starting to see the effects now of the 2007 bust in the economy and the impact it has had on the difficulty of retaining families in the south west. The 10 years up until the collapse of the economy were exceptional times in south west Kerry, full of vibrancy and people about the place, or at least many came home for the weekends.

Jaysus if you passed that comment in North Kerry you'd be laughed out of it.

Why so?, I'm not getting the humour. That wasn't a reply to your comment, someone seems to have deleted a comment basically saying the county is biased against South Kerry footballers.

I heard there is an u16 tournament in august up the Country with Kerry involved. Galway Tyrone and Dublin in it. Kerry have a very good team the North and south combined. Very hard team to pick.
Brian O'Regan John O'Rourke Eoin Brosnan are good keepers
Luka Brosnan Dylan Casey Ian McGillicuddy Jack Enright Jamie Harrington David Shanahan William Goodwin Donagh McMahon Sean O'Connell Oisin O'Connor are backs
Sean Horan Dara Casey Michael Slattery Jack Hanrahan midfielders
Eddie Horan Michael Kelliher Tadhg Sugrue Dara Cleary Shay Walsh Gearoid Sheehan Deividas Uosis Jason Mortimer up front

There was an amazing revelation on TSG by Get Loughnane tonight on this subject.
In comparing Galway and Kilkenny Hurlers, the stats show that while they have roughly the same number of Minor, U21 and Club AI's won, The Cats have 14 senior AIs in comparison to 2 for the Tribesmen. The Cats won their 11 Club AIs with 4 different teams while Galway won their 13 with 7 different teams; Ger concluded that the reason Galway falter at senior level is that there is so much bitterness built up from having such competition at club level and where there is a spike in the standard.
While it might be a minor factor I don't think it could be the key factor.
I wonder if there is any learning point for us in those stats.

They drift at senior level, Mayo of old won lots of minors but emigration depleted senior panels.

Just a little perspective for the table hitters who wax lyrical about amalgamated teams from south Kerry having an unfair advantage. A combined u16 team from Portmagee, Ballinskelligs, valentia and Foilmore last night beat Austins Stacks B under 16 team in the division 8 county league final by one point in a thirteen aside game with only two subs on their panel. I wasn't at the game but heard the south Kerry side came from eleven points down in the second half to win. The numbers game in the south west is a massive concern as the school numbers continue to drop at an alarming rate!

I do not believe anybody has an issue with almalgamated teams, particularly in the scenario you describe. For me the issue is when an amalgamated team is drawing from already strong clubs. There should be little or no limit to amalgamating teams from lower divisions, but division 1 & 2 teams forming the backbone for large amalgamations is against the spirit of the concept. Indeed it is also bad for those other lower division teams as very few of their players will get game time. A points system where division 1 sides are scored at say 4, division 2 at 3 and division 3 at 2, all others at 1 and a limit of 6-8 points for an amalgamated side.

What's the general youth population of Kerry like at the moment?
While south Kerry appears to be in big trouble, how is the rest?

Big win today in the u16 County Championship for Castleisland District over South Kerry 5-25 to 1-5. West Kerry had a good win over East Kerry 1-17 to 1-9. Mid Kerry over Eoghan Ruadh 2-14 to 1-13.

Might go myself to the U14 tournament. The U14 South team are very strong. Cian Ring from Firies will probably be the Goalkeeper. Tommy Cronin from Kenmare Ronan Collins from Gneeveguilla and Neil O'Shea from Dr.Crokes the full back line. Ruairi Doyle from Fossa Alan Dineen from Rathmore and Sean Corcoran from Keel the half back line. Eoghan O'Sullivan from Legion and Emmet Finnan from Glenflesk in Midfield. Cian O'Connor from Kenmare Colin Crowley from Templenoe and Niall McGillicuddy from Legion make the half forward line. Ryan O'Grady from Legion Jack O'Connor from Beaufort and Gearoid Hassett from Laune Rangers form the full forward line. Others would be Cian Knight from Glenbeigh/Glencar the other goalkeeper. Ruairi Murphy from Listry a good forward. Dylan O'Callaghan from Firies another forward. Emmet O'Shea from Fossa a midfielder. Cathal Ryan from Rathmore a forward. Kieran O'Sullivan from Cromane a back and Evan Looney from Crokes a back. Gary Randles from Kilgarvan a back.
The North team could be 1 Eoin De Hora (Dingle) 2 Luke Chester (Stacks) 3 Dara Hickson (Annascaul) 4 Seamus Lynch (An Ghaeltacht) 5 Joe Linehan (Churchill) 6 Armin Heinrich (Stacks) 7 Enda O'Connor (Na Gaeil) 8 Aodan Devane (An Ghaeltacht) 9 Cathal Begley (An Ghaeltacht) 10 Jack Sheehan (Na Gaeil) 11 Adam Curran (Stacks) 12 Sean Kennedy (Annascaul) 13 Dylan Geaney (Dingle) 14 Brian Cassidy (Ballymac) 15 Damien Doherty (Churchill) Subs: Conor O'Sullivan (O'Rahilly's) Devan Burns (Na Gaeil) Cian O'Grady (Castlegregory) Cian Purcell (Stacks) Kevin Goulding (Ballyduff) Seamus Lyne (Castlegregory) Barry O'Neill (Beale) .

This year at least one school saw no student in Junior Infants. Sallins has 90 junior infants, inclusion Prof Jr."

Disturbing stats. In 20 years time we might see only two national national schools for the entire region. One in Caherciveen and maybe one in Waterville, maybe a third on the Island or Portmagee. We might struggle to get three hundred students in to the secondary level school at a push across the six years, 1st year to 6 year. We might have one GAA team only representing the region at u14 - senior level, the south Kerry GAA club.
I shudder to think what would happen to the region if the single farm payment went and the various other farm payments. The region would disintegrate into an outback. As it stands there is an absolute lack of heirs for the family farms in the region. Must are hightailing it out of the region post second level school. Subsistence farming will not float the boat of the next generation of potential farming heirs.
There is an absolute lack of economical development in the region on the grand scale required to at least make it possible to live on the family farm and maybe work off farm, thus requiring/creating the need for the auxillary services - health, education, banking, retail, policing etc. Farming families have back boned the region until now. Any of the smaller commuter towns in the greater Dublin area would have a greater combined economic and social fabric in comparison to all of the the south Kerry region combined. The current farming age profile is probably in the late 40s to early 70s in age. The situation looks perilous but then again the region has survived for centuries. The next 25 - 50 years will be hugely challenging. It was probably challenging 50 years ago but the age profile was lower and some stayed at home.

The u16 division 1 final between Laune Rangers and scart/cordal was on last week in Killarney Laune Rangers won it 6-14 to 4-9. Exciting game a few players stood out . Daire cleary from Laune Rangers was very good . He will be on the Kerry minors next year . Eoin o Sullivan also at midfield looked good. Sean and Eddie Horan were good a along with shay walsh who scored 1-3. All of these lads will be close next year to the panel.

The point Kerrygold is making is that the future for farming and other industries in South Kerry (and indeed all rural parts of Kerry) is linked to the population, which in turn links to the number of young players who may be growing up there in the future. The decline in the farming and lack of meaningful investment in any form of industry will have consequences. Just like a longterm decline in tourism and a lack of investment in it, would have effects in the number of people living and working in a town such as Killarney.

Fair play glengael, we cant be flippant about these issues. There is a real issue coming down the tracks with an ageing population and lack of farming heirs. It will have a serious impact on population mass in the future in the south west.
