Round 3 fixed for July 10th
Austin Stacks V West Kerry Dingle V Milltown-Castlemaine St Kierans V Rathmore Legion V Kerins O'Rahillys
At the moment you would have to think Stacks and Dingle will win the first two games. If Kierans repeat the performance against Crokes they could beat Rathmore. Legion-Rahillys should be a good game and a repeat of the high scoring affair between the two in the last 16 last year could be on the cards. James O will probably be back so that should tip the balance in Legion's favour.

Hard to make selections this early because so much can happen in the next 5 weeks up until these games. Does anyone know of any players thinking about going on j1s or travelling for the summer? Some club and divisional players may not have a championship game until the last week of September/first week of October, it is hard to try and persuade these players to stick around if the opportunity presents itself for them to travel and enjoy their summer abroad.

Looking at the J1 Sanctions on the GAA website only 2 players from Kerry are on the list. Dara Kelliher from Glenflesk and Shane Daly from Laune Rangers. Other transfer to North America are Brian Rayel Lispole, Jamie Kelly Austin Stacks, Dara O Se Ghaeltacht, John Bastible Mitchels and Sean Moriarty. Unless some of the players travelling are not officially transferring and playing under a different name. But of course that doesn't happen at all does it?

This argument to me about "South Kerry being too big of a district" is a joke, the town of Caherciveen only has a population of about 1000 people when you compare it to the likes of listowel in North Kerry with nearly 4000, emigration is rife if you look at many clubs in south Kerry doing very well only 1 club competing in division 5 out of 8, when you take into account the small pick each club has and a depleting population on top of it, a testament to the home of Kerry football

Premier...the SK side looks very different. Is it due to injuries or is it due to the availabity of ballyfoilmore and Waterville players in 2016 or havenew younger players come on the scene? Declan is gone of course.

Declan is gone of course. There are a lot of factors for the changes. In relation to last years team, Brian Sugrue, Bernerd Walsh have long term injuries. Brendan Sullivan has been struggling of late with an injury apparently. They team seems to be set up a little more attacking this year as well. Much was made of South Kerry's defensive system last year. They seem to be playing with 3 inside now and the half forward line a little higher. No young players have come through as such. Fionan Clifford has come back after a year out through injury, Niall Shea was in Austraila. Barry Dwyer and Sean Cournane had different reasons for not being involved last year and have added a cutting edge up front. Bally/Fimore players which have featured have been Matthew Sullivan and Mark Griffin but both of their roles have been disrupted through injury

The county board are looking for proposals to change the structure of the divisional qualifier so it does not end up with the same two teams each year.
My proposal would be that the three divisional teams that lost both championship games this year (East Kerry,St.Brendan's & Feale Rangers) should play off with Shannon Rangers to determine which side is exempt from the championship next year.
Each year the same criteria should apply and these games should be played alongside the final rounds of the county championship each year.

Dingle 2-13 Milltown-Castlemaine 1-11 HT 1-7 1-5 Austin Stacks 0-21 West Kerry 1-13 HT 0-13 1-4
I got full value for my tenner , witnessing two very enjoyable games in a very windy Austin Stack Park.
Looking at the line outs in the match programme it appeared that Dingle had all the big names and on that basis I felt that it would be more or less a stroll for them. That is not the way it transpired. Milltown, with the advantage of the wind in the first half, played like demented weasels all through ,paying no deference to more vaunted opponents. They were unfortunate that in the early stages they lost two of their forwards through injury. This did not seem to deter them in the least. When Paul Geaney struck for a goal against the wind the impression was that would demoralise them but not at all. They shortly struck back with one of their own, a thunderous drive from about thirty metres by one their substitutes, Jeremiah Hayes. Donal Kelliher on the forty and a bag of tricks man, Cathal Moriarty at full forward, ensured that Dingle could never relax at the back.
There was only two points in it at the break but with the wind blowing into their faces one feared once more for Milltown. This worry was compounded early in the half when Paul Geaney got his second goal. Surely , Milltown would fold now. Never. They kept up their beaver like work rate before succumbing eventually by five points. Dingle were the worthy winners but scarcely by that margin.
Marcus Mangan stuck to Paul Geaney like a limpet. Mike Burke was too rugged, too street wise for young Marc O'Connor in the first half. Marc came more into it in the second half but it will likely be 2018 before this elegant footballer challenges successfully for a senior inter county spot.
Dingle lined without Tom O'Sullivan. Mathwew Flaherty was their most prominent defender. This is a good prospect. Barry O'Sullivan went off early, presumably due to an injury. Mikey shone in spurts, kicked three from play and three from frees. Conor Geaney made little impression. Paul Geaney scored 2-3, that is five scores. His possession count was little more than that. It is that economy that underlines the great striker. His first goal was typical Paul. He received, made a sudden, short drive, sharply braked, opponent overshoots the runway and then the low conversion home. The second was of the more fortuitous variety. Mikey kicked in a high one which struck the crossbar. Paul was first to react, punching home the rebound. Lucky I suppose but the top marauders make their own luck.
The second match was no less enjoyable. Like their fellow countrymen back west, West Kerry died with the boots still attached to their feet. Lining out without the injured Briain O'Beaglaoicch, they played against the strong wind in the first half. Austin Stacks, always the classier side, looked very good in that half and popped over some fine points but they were put on the canvas when their steady progress was interrupted by a fine goal from Sean Micheal O'Conchuir, a menace for Stacks all through. Stacks eventually retired for tea leading by six points. One wondered if it would be enough facing the wind and a tigerish West Kerry outfit in the second half. It was but they earned it against a stubborn, defiant opposition. Declan O'Sullivan from Lispole came on and he caused problems, kicking two points. Sean Michael continued to impress in the corner and he had a great duel all through with a gritty Sean Ryan. Cian O'Murchu , Marc and Padraig O'Se also gave their all. Tomas Mac an tSaoir ensured that West Kerry's burden was much lighter than it could have been, making numerous fine saves, one in particular when KD, after soaring over Marc ,passed to Darragh O'Brien and Darragh's effort was tipped over by Tomas.
Conor Jordan,Sean Ryan and Pa McCarthy, got a point when it would have been easier to get a goal, were fine defenders for Rock St. Daniel Bohane ranged all over the field and was,as he always has been, a tireless warrior. Shane O'Callaghan flitted in and out, being more prominent in the first half. David Mannix kicked three and was always a threat. Mickey Collins kicked two, blackcarded deservedly in the second half.
Michael O'Donnell kicked two points for Stacks from midfield but the eye catching duel here was between KD and Eanna O'Conchuir. KD made some sky scraping catches, travelled all over the world and kicked two points. His input was major. I remember Eanna O'Conchuir totally dominating from midfield for the Kerry minors in Tralee three or four years ago. I have not taken much notice of him since. Until last night that is. He was one of the best on show. Very often KD made the breath taking catch over his head but this man caught some too, worked feverishly and gavve the impression he could keep motoring for ever. He is not on the Kerry junior panel this year. Is it because he was on it last year? On the evidence of what I saw last night this man should be drafted into the senior panel for the winter. Give him his dietary and gym instructions and maybe we could have that all action midfielder for the spring that we crave. Am I over rating Eanna? I would like the comments of people who have seen a lot more of him than I.
Speaking of midfielders, Stacks brought on Wayne Guthrie late in the game and he too made a huge impression. Why wasn't he on from the beginning? Perhaps there are fitness issues to which I am not privy.

Eanna was an impressive minor but , for whatever reason he just did not cut it @ U-21 this year despite being given every chance.

He is not on the Kerry junior panel this year. Is it because he was on it last year? Nope - he had no involvement with the juniors last year.

Also just looking at the teams which are left I think the county board are justified for changing the structures. 8 really strong teams left with arguably only Rathmore who wouldn't have a realistic chance of winning it

I still think there wasn't a whole pile wrong with the championship in it's previous structure really. The standard of matches is still the same and I don't think there was a lot wrong with relegating one team and promoting the Intermediate champions.
Anyway as far as I know the 2A winners - those 4 teams will not be drawn against each other and instead they will be drawn against the round 3 winners
Hard to see past Crokes and South Kerry, assuming Gooch will be back in due course. Rahillys could be a dark horse and possibly Kenmare District if they get it together.

Rahillys finally got some revenge on Legion running out winners on a scoreline of 3-12 to 2-12 though the final margin should have been greater and flatters Legion somewhat. Rahillys played with the aid of the stiff breeze into the dressing room end and were quickly into their stride with scores from Barry John Keane, Jack Savage and Tommy Walsh; it was all one way traffic and when Barry John rounded Podge O'Connor to hit a fine drive past Brian Kelly it brought the score to 1-6 to nil after just 12 mins; Legions first real attack was thwarted by Danny O'Sullivan and Giles O'Grady and with further points from John Ferguson, BJ again and Jack Savage, Rahillys went in at half time 1-9 to 0-3 in front, Jamie O'Sullivan kicking Legion's only score from play on the 30th minute; indeed, it could have been worse for the Killarney side as Rahillys squandered a no of chances prior to half time including a great goal chance from BJ.Rahillys were dominant all over the field particularly around the middle where David Moran and John C O'Connor ruled the roost; inside, Barry John was on top of his game, frequently interchanging with Tommy Walsh who was also very effective.
On the resumption, wind assisted one would have felt that Legion would have mounted a comeback but Rahillys resumed where they had left off in the opening half with points from BJ & Jack Savage; John Ferguson who was a thorn in Legion's side all day, found the net mid way through the half which at stage had Strand Road ahead by 13 points with some patrons heading to the exits; Legion did fight back with scores from frees from Jamioe O'Sullivan and David O'Sullivan but when Ferguson again found the net in the 21st minute to leave the scores at 3-12 to 0-8 , Legion were only battling for pride at this stage; they were not found wanting however, and with the clock ticking down they found a way through with Kevin Breen and Mike O'Sullivan registering green flags to leave them just 3 points adrift at the final whistle.
Rahillys march on but will be worried about the final 10 mins when they conceded 2-4 while Legion bow out of this years championship. The Kerry players on duty had mixed outings, with David Moran & Barry John doing enough to give Kerry selectors some food for thought but the Legion contingent of Kelly, Podge, Lyne & JO'D had overall an off day.
