With the start of the County Championship just over a week away, we should look ahead to see if South Kerry can retain their title or if favourites Crokes can get back to dominating this championship. First round fixtures are as follows: Lewis Road; Saturday May14th East Kerry v Stacks Crokes v West Kerry
Killorglin; Sunday May 15th Milltown v Legion Mid Kerry v Kilcummin
Austin Stack Park; Sunday May 15th Brendans v Kenmare District Rahillys v South Kerry
Cordal; Sunday May 15th Kierans v Feale Rangers
Rathmore; Sunday May 15th Rathmore v Dingle
Crokes are 6/4 favourites with the bookies after getting what is perceived as one of the easier draws. South Kerry, Kenmare and Legion follow at 15/2. Game of the first round looks to be Rahillys v South Kerry. It will be interesting to see how Brendan Sullivan, Denis Daly, Paul Sullivan and Aidan Walsh get on after a few months of Kerry training. Sheehan and Sullivan will more than likely be battling it out at midfield with Moran and Tommy Walsh. Tommy has an early chance at redemption. Mark Griffin and Barry John Keane should be a good battle as well. Sheehan's frees in a familiar Stacks Park might swing it for South Kerry

Sheehan's frees in a familiar Stacks Park might swing it for South Kerry 3 double bills which is good to see as it should bump up attendences. Rahillys v South Kerry should be a decent one all right. Will James O'Donoghue be back for Legion I wonder ? Crokes at 6/4 isn't a value bet - they are going well and I wouldn't be backing against them but 6/4 at this stage is terrible odds. Wonder if Rathmore will get revenge over Dingle - goals might be key here and Rathmore seem to be in goal-scoring form recently.

Kenmare District must be considered as dark horses for this years championship. Must be contenders based on their performances last year and the form shown by both Kenmare and Templenoe that has brought both to the intermediate semi finals; Stephen O'Brien, Killian Spillane, Paul O'Connor, Teddy Doyle will be a handful for any defence- add in Templenoe's winning mentality and anything is possible. Crokes with Pat O'Shea at the helm are worthy favourites and should be the team to beat; it will be interesting to see if South Kerry with a different manager will have the appetite they had last year and if the long year enjoyed by the Mary's boys will have taken its toll. I would think the loss of Declan to the set up will be huge given his influence last year. Dingle will be another side who will fancy their chances and not forgetting Stacks who will be there or thereabouts. Great games to look forward to.

The addition of Bally/Filmore to the south Kerry set up should probably give it that freshness even if it is just Mark Griffin to start the team

Don't think Eamonn would be too thrilled.

Kenmare District must be considered as dark horses for this years championship. Anyone know what's the story with the Templenoe lads this year - are they committed? have they been training with the others? If they were all pulling in the same direction they could be a serious outfit but until I see it I would be reluctant to be tipping them, especially in light of how things have been the last few years. I wouldn't be shocked if the Templenoe boys were more focused on the intermediate championship.

Who's the new Sth Kerry manager? William Harmon from Miltown, he was selector last year so I presume it was a seemless enough transition

I just cant understand how East Kerry aren't competitive these days. They have nice young players down there. Can they give stacks any sort of game?

I thought the same last year when I backed them against Rahillys but they duly got hammered. They are a strange team, never seems to be the commitment to the district

One would think with West Kerry with only 4 clubs involved that the closeness would be easier achieved than say with South Kerry who have 8 clubs

Attended both of their respective matches last weekend and would still expect Legion to get over the line with or without James.

Ek do have the players. Correct me if im missing some. Goalkeepers - Colin Myers Fossa , James Devane Spa Defenders - Jack Sherwood Firies , Darren Brosnan Gneeveguilla , Dan o Donoghue Spa , Shane Cronin Spa , Darren Brosnan Gneeveguilla , Shane Lynch Spa , James o Donoghue Firies , Timmy O Leary Gneeveguilla , Daniel O Brien Glenflesk , Shane Courtney Glenflesk , Michael Finnegan Spa , Midfielders - Garry o Sullivan Listry , Andrew Garnett Spa , Liam Kearney Spa , Matthew Rennie Fossa Forwards - Jeff O Donoghue Glenflesk , Paudie Clifford Fossa , Michael Foley Spa , Mike Stam O Donoghue Spa , Dara Roche Glenflesk , Craig Hickey Spa , Evan Cronin Spa , Ronan Buckley Listry , Lee O Donoghue Glenflesk , Dara Moynihan Spa , Derry Aherne Listry.
From what is there , Ek should be challenging to get to the Semi final at least. Its a young team but look at dublin for example.

I saw EK last year vs Rahillys and I dont think there was much difference in personnel from the panel listed above; one observation I would make is that Rahillys seemed to be a much FITTER team than EK on the night; I know its difficult when a team is losing by 8/9 points to stem the tide but I do think that this is a problem for divisional sides; club teams in the top half of Div 1 are putting a lot of time into training, strength and conditioning etc which is at a level above what other teams may be doing in say Div 2/3 or 4- just a thought.

Kenmare have another one or two young players to put into that forward line mix greenandgold. Huge potential there. I agree with you - some super games to look forward to in this years championship. Was never as excited about the county championship.

As far as I'm aware Thomas ladden is out having broken his wrist, mid Kerry like other divisional team's have a big problem with preparation, don't think they have done barely anything up until now,a club team could catch them cold in the early round's
