That's all very fine Mickmack until you mentioned that word 'immortality', I'l be pushing up daisies and fellas will be propped up by a bar counter reciting my poems, and sure more luck to 'em, didn't I do the same myself! One doesn't decide what to write about, I.e. the auld head has a mind of it's own, seriously. In the vein of timelessness most of my stuff ticks the box, Different Kings of Kingdom and The Kerry Ingredient, etc. In fact Ventry Harboured only mentions Paídí and The Bawn in recording history and Different Kings of Kingdom would have been inspired of by Paul Galvin although I wouldn't have been conscious of that when writing it; it was only when I read his own book that things started to connect in the subconscious, a uniquely profound experience I can tell you, like reading something you wrote but that you didn't write, one becomes transparent to themselves is how it might be described, haunting in a beautiful kind of way. The subconscious can be very powerful and events like this teaches you a lot about yourself. You certainly have me thinking though and a lot of what you say would be stuff I would have sensed emotion of previously. Maybe you might string a few bardic moments together for us yourself! On reflection maybe this thread will form the basis of a nice work and the epic (i.e. heroic) genre would certainly be consistent with the kind of stuff I like to do. And it would also silence that hoor of a professor above in Trinity College who thinks he knows more about the breeding of footballers than we do. I mean who is a genetics egg-head to question The Kerry Ingredient? Field trials is what it is all about, medals are not won in a laboratory.

Following a direct line - father to sons - there are several two generation combos, any three generation lines?

Savage work ballnamona. Regarding players with more than one club, I think the most accurate was is to list the club they were with when they won the AI. Trivia GAA question I heard recently which can be verified with your lists is: Name the 2 Kerry clubs who have never had any Senior AI medal winners.

Following a direct line - father to sons - there are several two generation combos, any three generation lines? Killian Spillane, Father Tom and uncles, Grand fathers Spillane & Lyne? This is remarkable given that the GAA is only a century old and if Killian is as good as Unc Pat says then the pattern should continue; now what do you think of that Joe Brolly?

Following a direct line - father to sons - there are several two generation combos, any three generation lines? I've got one that might be 4 generations (if you include minor and U21) but I'm not 100% sure on the links. Jack Myers on the 1903 team was father to Bill Myers (Dr Crokes) who was uncle to a Donal/Dan Kavanagh (Dr Crokes) whose son Eanna played U21 and minor for Kerry. Bill Myers's sister was married to Dan Kavanagh (Dingle/Dr Crokes) the father of Donal/Dan Kavanagh (Dr Crokes) who were an uncle and a first cousin to Seanie Walsh (KOR) father of Tommy Walsh (KOR) There is also some family connection to Mick Gleeson (Spa) and Pat Moynihan (Gneeveguilla) - I think 2 of the daughters of the Myers Kavanagh marriage married the two of them. Mick Gleeson (Spa) is an uncle to Mike "Stam" O'Donoghue (Spa) All of those named bar Eanna Kavanagh played for Kerry at senior. Fair chunk of Kerry connections there. I'm probably missing some folk in that GAA family tree as well - next time I see one/any of these current generation around Killarney I'll quiz them on whether I'm missing anyone/have the details correct. Edited: There is a father and son - I've only heard of the father called Dan Kavanagh - he played in the Polo Ground final. The son I've heard called both Dan and Donal Kavanagh and he played in the '72

Ardfert is one I would say St. Senans and Ballyduff. Ardfert had Moss O'Connell in 1959, and a few more who won sub's medals.

Donal Kavanagh, son of Dan, played for Kerry in the 1972 AI final. Yeah some people call the son Kavanagh (the one who played in the '72 final ) - Donal and some call him Dan - I edited my previous post to clear things up as best I could. To add to confusion there is a nephew Donal there who played for the Crokes as well. By the time this thread ends we'll all have PHDs in genealogy.

We are coming back to what I was saying about where to draw the line. e.g. nature and nurture. You'd think the Spillanes at three was a pure freak but four generations is unbelievable, by jazus but givehimball has some right stuff in his auld napper!
There is a lot of expertise being developed in genealogy so let's rumble on and we will apply the frameworks when it becomes available. Then we will all run like .. whatever .. when we find out we are all related to each other!

Terrace Talk 60 minute special this Monday 6-8 pm
The Amazing Sporting Story of The Collins Brothers From Currans Farranfore
Mick Collins the second eldest son and Jerry moved to London in the early 20th century. Here, Mick joined Polytechnic Harriers athletic club. He was one of 21 club members selected to compete in the 1908 Olympics in London, where he competed in discus events.
As well as training the Kerry team from 1912- 1926, Jerry also introduced the concept of collective-training to Gaelic football. Whilst in London, both Jerry and Mick had experienced collective-training with Tottenham Hotspur Soccer Club.
Austin Stack invited Jerry to train Kerry and they won the All Irelands of 1913 and 1914.
Former Kerry great William Kirby who speaks on the program is a grandson of Olympian Mick Collins.

I'd like to see a map of the county, shaded proportionate to the number of medals with deeper shade representing higher concentration. N Kerry looks like about 25% of the area but I don't know what percentage of the population. Urban areas would have a high concentration by area. E.g. Tralee and Killarney are in the hundreds in a tiny area but the population is of course very dense.
Another interesting angle would be how the shade would have changed down the years, e.g. with the emergence of factors like soccer, emigration, etc. I wonder how we'd compare nationally, the Northern stats have spiked.
What is the Sam curve?, i.e. what % do we win say every 10 years? Overall we have won about 1 in 3 in total.

And 13 of the top 17 teams (in the betting) in the county championship are the South with 2 from each of Tralee (2nd and 5th) and North Kerry (13th and 14th). Killarney have 1st and 3rd. I suppose North Kerry has hurling but there is more to it than that.

Yes the Southern end of the County is going through a purple patch with 10 of the last 15 county titles going South compared to 5 for the Northern brethern. This is in contrast to the Northern side of the county having won 63 titles compared to 50 for the Southern boys since the begining of records.

Maybe best to distinguish but then should Killarney also be separated out? I wonder if there is a correlation with soccer and rugby emerging? Donegal is 60%+ soccer and some people find that hard to believe; many now prominent GAA clubs were only established in the '60's. And as I said elsewhere, let's not bee so foolish with providing the Dubs with breeding stock as we were in the past!

Yes Bally, I kept it simple and just did a north south divide. Tralee (excluding BallyMac) has 40 of the 63 North titles, Killarney has 14 (including Dick Fitzgeralds?? in 1951. So excluding the two main towns the North South number changes to 23 North 36 South.

Post by Ballyfireside on Sept 8, 2015 20:08:34 GMT
So Killarney has 14, Rest of S Kerry 36, Tralee 40, Rest of N Kerry 23.
Killarney has 60% of the population of Tralee but only 35% of the number of wins.
You also have hurling in N Kerry.
Rural areas are also harder hit with emigration and which kicks in between minor and senior, i.e. the age when young men enter the workforce. Mayo of old would have had great minor teams but emigration decimated the senior ranks. The increasing pace of rural depopulation will wreak havoc on the GAA. The thing is, there is so sustainable solution as people need wages to live. I suppose if the economic imbalances were addressed it might help. the old Chesnut of inequality. As the largest voluntary body the GAA will struggle most in this respect, and no politician cares.

Brian Fenton as well - his uncle was Denis Fenton from Spa who was secretary of the East Kerry board for 7 years. A little birdie told me that Brian actually won €50 in the Spa GAA Lotto last week. Good to see him doing his bit to support Kerry football

Ok I'm a little confused by all these Families. Let's start with the Geaney's. Paul is Pauls son from the Pub. I think i'm correct there. Then is Mikey and David Brothers or Cousins? Conor is Colms son I think. Then I hear off a couple more of them playing underage for Dingle. Niall who is supposed to be good too and Dylan. Who are they related to?. Killian Spillane is Toms son I think i'm right. Then are Adrian and John his Brothers or Cousin. Padraig is pats son. Mark O'Connor (Kerry Minor) is related to Tommy Doyle how? Last years Kerry minor Tomas O'Se is he related to Darragh and Tomas? Are all the Boyles from Ballyduff brothers? Is Ken Savage related to Jack and Gearoid Savage from Strand Road ? Can anyone help? I know there is many more but that's it for now. Another cousin of the Geaneys David on the Late Late now, world champion trad dancer.

You're welcome, just waiting for someone to contradict me now on some part of it! sorry to be that person.... but colm cooper was on the match day panel last year, therefore got a medal. so he now has 5 still though... trojan work on your behalf. Just revisiting this after the Cooper retirement. The Co. Board acknowledged him as having 5 medals. Also, when they brought out the 'Golden Years 2' dvd, the tie-in book listed Alan Fitzgerald as a medalist. It would seem 28 medals were awarded in 2014.
