Hey ballynamona, Eamon and Paud O'Donoghue played with Ballylongford while Liam Flaherty is a Ballydonoghue man. I hope this is not a reflection of the data source. Do you have figures for the number of medals Kerry have won at each level? It's a reflection of the manual nature of the task. Have amended.

I just added a bit more detail into the list by club.
One thing that surprised me a great deal was how few medals were won in Killorglin before 1997.

Gosh I didn't realise you compiled all that ballynamona.
On relatives, here's an interesting one on our great minor FB Jason Foley, well his gran-aunt was the late Peggy Finucane (nee Foley) who played camogie with the county, and who along with her husband Mick donned the jersey in the same hour. Foley and traditional music would have been synonymous for generations and you'd wonder if the creativity is a factor in Jason's success. This trait also prevails in Paul Galvin as his teacher identified his creative writing at an early age. Foley looks like the real workhorse, seldom does one see such determination looking out and even less often at such an early age.

Gosh I didn't realise you compiled all that ballynamona. Manual input rather than compilation. Though I know Coolard well, I sometimes get Ballylongford and Ballydonoghue mixed up...

Mixing them up makes for a dangerous cocktail!
Ballydonoghue is landlocked and is in the centre of North Kerry, in fact Dowling Park in Coolard is about 200 yards from the exact point I believe. Ballylonford, or Bally' as it is often known, is to the North on the banks of the Shannon.

Yeah, know them both well. It was the names and the O'Donoghue piece that threw me! Although I have no excuse for Liam Flaherty...
North Kerry is alas not scenic by comparison to the peninsulas, but places like Carrigafoyle Castle near Ballylongford definitely worth a look.

Take the coast road from Asdee into Ballybunion is also spectacular.
O'Donoghues as I said are actually from Asdee but played with Bally' and this is similar to Tim Horse Kennelly from Clounmacon playing with Listowel. I suppose better players will want to play with senior clubs and it worked out for them.
Asdee has a church, Clounmacon hassn't but it has a club.
In that vein, does anyone know why Ballybunion goes as Beale, and which is an area of the bigger parish.

Yes, you're right, that is a fantastic drive and the best way to enter Ballybunion.
Incidentally, it always annoys me when road signs etc mis-spell place names. I have seen signs for somewhere called 'Astee'. Very annoying that those in charge of such things can be so cavalier with the very names of our towns and villages.
Was John Kennedy also someone who played with both Asdee and Ballylongford?

He did not get a medal I'm afraid. He was not in the '26'. There were only 26 medals awarded. It was 30 in 2009. In Kerry, they would go by the 26 listed in the match programme, but if anyone had played in the AI-series, and was not in the 26 listed on Final day, then they would get a medal ahead of one of the 26 that did not play in AI series. Last year, 25 players were used in the AI series, all were listed in the 26 man squad for the final, and so those 25 + Brendan Kealy got AI medals. More than 26 will be togged out with numbered jersies on final day, but it's really a gesture of recognition for their efforts. They are not subs in the true sense, i.e. cannot be brought on.

Are you sure it was a Celtic Cross? Just wondering if perhaps the county board award something of their own to guys who did not win Celtic Crosses. I know that used to happen before. When the medal allocation was 21, but 24 used to be named on the programme, some county boards used to pay for 3 'extra' to be struck. in 1997 the rule in Kerry was that they only awarded 21, and did not buy extra. It would have needed a rule change to deviate from that, and I don't know if that happened.

Have Kerry not being presenting 30 medals for some time now? I'd imagine the Gooch has a medal from last year having appeared on all the match day Croker panels at the business end.

My understanding was that the official allocation was reduced from 30 to 26, in line with the reduction in match day panels. You can't be brought on if you are outside the 26 in the panel on the day. It used to be 30 named in the programme.
Kerry did present 30 medals for the All-Irelands from 2004 to 2009, but they would only have got 26 from Croke Park last year. I remember someone posted the exact wording of the rule here after last years All-Ireland.

Gooch was not on a match day panel last year. Have a look at the AI Final program. The men listed are on a match day panel. He was togged out, but could not have come on.

yeah that ring thing was an extra thing. An imitation of the superbowl rings that they give in the NFL. Kieran Donaghy's idea as far as I know. There was an interview earlier this year with the Gooch in which he said that he was available to play that day, prepared as if he was going to come on but it didn't work out on the day the way the match went. Maybe the 26 handed in as official match day panel is not necessarily numbers 1 to 26? ? I dunno. I just know I was told that he was presented with a medal last year. anyway it doesnt really matter. Hopefully he will get one on the field of play this year.

I remember last year just before the throw-in in the SF v Mayo, it was announced that Darran O'Sullivan was out of the match day panel and Alan Fitzgerald was in, I doubt that would be necessary if anyone in the wider panel could be brought on.
As you say this stuff if not all that important in the scheme of things. I put up what I had as it's the kind of stuff that comes up again and again. For the purposes of the list above, I'm going to stick with the 26 medals in 2014, as everything I know about how the County Board have operated is that they would have issued the official allocation only.
The reduction from 30 to 26 in a match day panel came about as many county boards felt the size of the travelling panel was leading to unnecessary expense.

I cant answer your question as I don't know exactly who PF was. It was a pen name obviously for a man who would compose poems in the Kerryman back in the 30s and 40s and 50s after victories by Kerry.
I remember a few lines of the poems I heard as a child and
"Craudarrig Jack at left full back shone like an Aladdin lamp" ............(i cant remember) O'Donnell was from Camp"
another bit;
Teams may come and teams may go fearless fast and clever But the Kerry tean like the liffey stream keeping rolling on forever
now away with you now Ballyfireside and compose a poem for the current era and end the poem with that last verse about the Kerry team rolling on forever and we can sing it to tune of "Old Man River" at the final

Mighty Kingdom
To be sung to
There a good spot in Killarney City, A sacred spot where I love to be; And it's in there that they solve their troubles, Decide who'll to wear the gold and green.
Mighty Kingdom, That Mighty Kingdom, She must keep winning, Without complaining. She just keeps rolling, She keeps on rolling along.
Remember players, Remember heroes, And Oh My Captain! Never forgotten! But Mighty Kingdom, She just keeps rolling along.
North and South they sweat and strain, Bodies all aching and racked in pain. Make that charge! Win that ball! Get a little mad: On the Sunday Game.
It can be weary, It can get trying. Used to winning, But scared of dying. But Mighty Kingdom, She just keeps rolling along.
Display the flags in our quiet village, We calmly rise through the month of May. Getting trim and proper for battles yet: Getting no Rest til All Ireland day.
Don't look up, And don't look down, Don't dare make, Yourself back down. Fix your gaze, Recall what's said: And Don't give up Until you're dead.
Let them come down to Killarney City, Let them get away from all their fuss. Show that young lad who began his hoarding: It all begins with one Celtic Cross!
Mighty Kingdom, That Mighty Kingdom, She must keep winning, Without complaining. She just keeps rolling, She keeps on rolling along.
Mighty Kingdom forever keeps rollin' on...
Remember players, Remember heroes, And Oh My Captain! Never forgotten! But Mighty Kingdom, She just keeps rolling along.
Mighty Kingdom keep hearing our roars. West and East they sweat and strain, Bodies all aching and racked in pain. Make that charge! Win that ball! Get a little mad: On the Sunday Game.
Ah, ne'er beaten, And all the trying, Ne'er tired of winning! Still scared of dying! But Mighty Kingdom, She just keeps rolling along!

Baalyfireside... take a leaf out of Bob Dylans book. He hardly ever used dates, years or peoples names so the likes of "Blowing in the wind "and "Hard rain is gonna fall" can be relevant to any era.
