From the looks of it, it would be as hard to pick a Kerry team of footballs without a famous ancestry as with one!I think St. Brendan The Economist is right; the statistical probabilities make it difficult to draw any conclusions, I just find the stories behind the connections interesting.

I haven't seen the the first post so I am not sure if I am on the same wavelength.
Paudie and Eamon O'Donoghue from Asdee won senior medals in 1969 and 1970.
Derry Crowley would have won a couple of medals in that era as well and of course his son Johnny won his couple later on.
John O'Connell from Tarbert played minor and senior for Kerry. His father, Patsy Skin, played for Kerry juniors as far as I can remember. John's uncle , Timmy O'Sullivan from Castleisland, won a senior medal in 1962. Timmy was a marvelous footballer.
Tiger Lyons won senior medals in 1959 and 1962 and his nephew, Mossy, won one in 2000.
Eddie Walsh from Knocknagoshel won several senior medals , son Eamon played for Kerry and Eamon's son, James, won a junior medal with Kerry this year.
John Joe Sheehy played with Kerry in the late eighties. I am not sure is he a son of Nial or Sean og. Of course his uncle, Paudie, and grandfather, John Joe, were Kerry stars as well.
Teddy Dowd played all grades for Kerry and of course his son Timmy won a few medals in the eighties.
Ned Fitzgerald played for Kerry in the fifties and his son, Maurice, got a few trials for Kerry!
Jacko's son, forget his name, played for Kerry, sadly his career was stalled by injury.
Johnny Buckley is a grandnephew of Tom Costello from Duagh who won his medal in 1955.
Don't forget Tim, Tadgh and Noel Kennelly.
Dan Kavanagh won a medal in the forties and his son Dan played in the 1972 final.
Frank O'Keeffe won a medal in the forties and he had a son, Johno, who won a few more.
Dermot Hanafin won a medal in 1953 and son Dermot played in the late eighties/nineties.
Diarmuid O'Donoghue and his son, James.
The Kennelly's of Ballylongforr are interesting. Colm won a senior medal in 1953. His brother the poet,Professor Brendan, won a junior medal, I think. Another brother , Paddy, won a minor medal in 1962. Finally, another brother Alan may also have a won a junior medal.
Anthony and Ger O'Keeffe are brothers. Was Anthony on the winning panel in 1969/1970 or was it later?
I am sure there are others I am missing.

Tommy & Barry John Walsh are of course sons of Sean from the Golden Years team; likewise David Moran is son of Ogie, holder of 8 Celtic Crosses; Sean Liston played minor, U-21 and senior for Kerry- think he may have a senior medal as a substitute- open to correction on that one. Bernard O'Sullivan of Dingle is father of last year's minor captain Barry. I think Sean Liston has an All-Ireland medal from either '84 or '85, maybe '85. Sean played NFL for Kerry in '84 lining out at fullforward with Mickey Sheehy on the forty in the early days of rebuilding as Micko set sail in the Autumn of 1983 to reconstruct the Kerry team. Padraig (RIP) also played Centre-Forward for Kerry in NFL. I remember he played centre-forward against Dublin, in the 1978 League, the first day that Eoin played full-forward. As it happened Eoin scored two goals that day against Sean Doherty. Being the smart bloke that I was, I said the centre-forward was worth persisting with, but that the fella playing full-forward was as awkward a player as I had ever seen in the jersey. I remember discounting the two goals as pure flukes. I have a long list of similar astute observations to my credit.

The Rose of Tralee interrupted a previous post so I am reposting it here to complete it.
Regarding relatives, the GAA is a small community and so it is little surprise that within Kerry there is such high incidence of relations. Here are a few guesstimates and I think it will more generate discussion that may lead to more a more accurate picture.
The population of Kerry today is around 150,000 so I wonder how many people ever lived in Kerry, say over last 150 years?, let's say 500,000. Would the average extended family have 100 members over that time? How many ever wore a Kerry jersey?, a wild guess, would it be 5,000? Dividing the 500,000 population by the average extended family size of 100 also gives us 5,000 families. i.e. On average 1 from each extended family donned the jersey and which is 1 in every 500 people, well 1 in 250 as half the population are women.
There are lies, damm lies and statistics. Ah I'd think it is less that 1 in 250 and it could hardly be 1 in every extended family, ah limitations, well it is a quick stab start and maybe someone with more relevant experience could throw more light on it. I suppose if you consider some families have been so prominent the final figure may not be crazy; is my line of logic ok? What do you think of my base figures guesses, 5,000 have worn the jersey? And of course apart from one mention, I am assuming that women don't exist, so now I'll be mauled; a jazus I can't wait for the 75,000 of 'em, sure some of 'em will be coming out of their graves!
Isn't Barry John Keane also Deenihan's 'Nephew in law' so extended family! Then how far back do you go, I don't recall Adam or Eve playing although John B always insisted that Our Lord was a Kerryman and there is evidence that I penned elsewhere, Ogham writing on tablets, and not them Apple wans, well not them Apples you're thinking about anyway!
Did Tom Long have relatives who also played. And isn't The Bomber Mick Finucane's nephew in law! I think there is a nice little project here and as I said, it will be intriguing if people get stuck in. The more I think of it the more I realise that it is hard to find a family free of royal blood. In fact I had a brother on the u16 panel, ah man, these guys are in good company, they'll be delighted, I'm now wan of our own!
Tómas Crean says I don't bother much with bull* so I'll eat my words, Tómas can have the apple!
Signed St Brendan The Economist, or is it The Economystic

Looking at Bally's post prompted me to visit Weeshies terrace talk website. He lists in the region of 1100 players who have worn the Kerry jersey at one level or another since 1928. Some of these only played minor or u21 and more played a handful of league games. The privilige of wearing the Green and Gold of Kerry in a senior championship game has been with a much smaller number of players that we think. Prior to 1928 there was only the senior grade and in the years 1887 (first championship) and 1927 Kerry did not field a team in at least eight of those years. Of the 1100 listed approximately 50% played 4 or less times and only about 30% played 10 or more games (all levels)

Are darren and declan o sullivan related? Don't think so but the Iveragh masterminds will know. Pat O'Shea managed Kerry to 2 All Ireland Finals winning one. His maternal grandfather was Paddy Healy from Headford who won All-Irelands in 1913 and 14. I heard once that the current O'Ses ( Marc etc) are related to the aforementioned Dingle Moriartys but I'm not sure if that's correct.

onlykerry, now that's making more sense, so now we are saying roughly 1 in every 5 extended families/clans have worn the jersey. As we get more accurate figures for the other variables we will be closing in on the true picture. Intriguing or what?

Maurice McCarthy was one of the 1903 men, and one of the first two Kerrymen (along with Dick Fitzgerald) to reach 5 All-Ireland medals. He was from Castleisland and played for Tralee Mitchels.
His son John Mitchel (known as Johnny) won an All-Ireland with Kerry in 1939 (as a sub). He had won an All-Ireland Junior with Longford in 1937. At stage, certain counties were graded Junior, i.e. their first XV took part in that Championship only. Now that I think of it, that's how Kilkenny are now.
Another son, Dan Joe won an All-Ireland Minor with Kerry in 1931.
His daughter was married to Billy Myers (Dr. Crokes), who won 4 AI medals from 1937 to 1941. Billy Myers was a son of Jack Myers, another 1903 man.
Con Healy of Tralee Mitchels won 3 AI senior medals with Kerry from 1903 to 1909. His son Tadhg (John Mitchels) won 4 AI medals with Kerry from 1937 to 1941. His other son Dan Joe won a AI Junior in 1941.
Con Murphy won 4 All-Ireland from 1904 to 1914. His son John, of Listry, won an AI Junior in 1941.
Thady and Jamesie O'Gorman of the 1903 team were the original townie inside forwards. Jimmy 'Gawksie' O'Gorman was Thady's son, and their nephew Bill won an AI in 1926.
Tom Rice (1909,1913,1914) and his brother Jack (1913 & 1914) won Senior All-Irelands. They were from Abbeydorney but played with Tralee Mitchels.
Joe Barrett was father of JJ Barret, of the 1962 Kerry team.
John and James Bailey were another set of All-Ireland winning brothers, in the 1920s. The Landers, were I think mentioned on another thread.
Tony, Sean and Michael Herbert were famous Limerick hurlers, their uncle Paddy Kennelly on Laune Rangers won an AI Senior with Kerry in 1913.
Eugene Moriarty of Kilcummin was a brother-in-law to Dee O'Connor. Eugene Moriarty was a mainstay during Kerry's first 'famine' of 1914 to 1924, and happily was still around to pick up a sub's medal in 1924.
Paddy Breen of Firies/Dr. Crokes won an AI in 1913 & 1914. He married a sister of Dr. Eamon O'Sullivan, and had a famous grandson - Gary Breen, the soccer player.
Jerry 'Pluggy' Moriarty, mentioned in another post, had a son Jerry who played for the Kerry minors.
Johnny Walsh, Ballylongford was father to Jackie and Barry Walsh who played in the 1970s.

I think current Kerry minor John Michael Foley from Kilgarvan is a grandson of the late PJ McIntyre, Kenmare. PJ a native of Offaly, played hurling for Kerry. Not sure if he got a run with the footballers.
Louise Galvin, Kerry lady footballer, is a sister of Enda who won a senior medal in 2000.
Dan Spring won a senior medal , perhaps more, several decades ago. His late son Arthur won a minor medal in 1962 or 1963. Dick, rugby international, I think got a few runs with footballers. He also played for the hurlers.
Seamus McGearailt and Micheal O'Se are first cousins. Paidi of course was a first cousin of Tom Long.
Billy Doran won a NFL medal in 1963. He captained UCG to Sigeson cun victory in the sixties. His son Alan played minor for Kerry in the early nineties.
Kevin Griffin played minor for Kerry in 1965. His son Fergal subsequently played minor and junior for Kerry and is still playing for Mid Kerry.
Ollie Kerins played minor for Kerry in the late fifties, His son Liam played was a good minor for Kerry and has had a distinguished career in management.
Sean Lovett and Declan Lovett were better known as hurlers but Declan won a minor medal in 1962 and an u21 medal in 1964. I think Sean may have been on the 1959 winning panel.

Seamus also played minor football with Kerry and Fitzgibbon hurling with Gardaí. Sadly Seamus is no longer with us

I have updated Weeshie on this thread so listen out for his comments. If anyone knows the stats he does. Still they say only 1,100 ever wore the jersey. We won 37 so that multiplied by say 20 = 760, ah allow for the many multiple winners, so say 600. Are we saying that half of those who ever played for Kerry have a Celtic Cross, i.e 600/1,150?, they probably have?
Wouldn't it be easier to name a county player with a medal than without?, 'twould be safer anyway!
Over to you Weeshie!

The 1100 number is based on Weeshies data on his website and includes minors, juniors and U21's in more recent years. His data starts in 1928 which is 40 years after the first AI in 1887. Kerry did not field a team in 9 of those early years and in a number of other years only had one game - estimating the number of players in that era is difficult but I presume team lists exist particularly for the seven winning years. I think an number of 250-300 should cover this era giving an overall number of say 1400 players since the begining of the GAA.

I suppose we could approach it from the opposite angle, all the surnames, Walsh, Kennelly, O'Sé, Spillane/Lyne, then clans with them and which brings us to clan parameters. E.f. westmeathman question re Darren and Declan; and there are a lot more O'Sullivans. Indeed wasn't the late racing commentator Peter Sullivan born in Kenmare. onlykerry is upping the no of players to 1,400, how many won AI and Munster medals I wonder, the Club represented the county in the early days. SO FAR WE ARE SAYING, ALBEIT WITH AN ELEMENT OF GUESSTIMATION THAT - On average, 1 in 5 families had a member who played for the county at some stage. Of those who played county, half actually won a Celtic Cross; What about Munster, and The League?
That makes sense but it is only the first stab, now what strikes me is that this is part of the exploration of the elusive Kerry Ingredient. And please don't accuse me of self promotion, I will declare though and as I had previously stated, that I am publishing something at some stage, well why shouldn't I? I didn't start the thread and in fact I often thought of it but resisted as I thought it might look like self-promotion, and I know what people can be like, so better it happened this way, anyway haven't the flood gates open themselves, and we haven't even scratched the surface. Of course the world is watching, this will be the ultimate thread ever, How to Make a Kerry footballer, -Now there's a good name for a book, a poem, a song, it will be bought even if it is a blank, maybe the spirit would be in it? Lock up your daughters, your sons. Like the story of the Mayo crowd touring The Ring, they came by a football field where an underage game was in process, and which led to the comment yew better hide 'em. It also reminds of an O Muircheartaigh line - "Teddy McCarthy to John McCarthy, no relation, John McCarthy back to Teddy McCarthy, still no relation." Didn't I tell ya 'twould get interesting! Now here's another trivia, what about a table of the total no of medals won by individuals, we already have the 5 8s, ie the five who have won 8 Celtic Crosses. I'd say a lot of fellas wouldn't even know they'd have so many. Would fellas have 40/50, between underage, Parish Leagues, Tug o war, pint drinking at Puck, etc?

ballynamona Is that a guess, an educated guess? It makes sense as I was saying 550-700 inc u18 and u21, although there is still a big margin of error. The underlying issue has to do with The Creativity Gene, nature and nurturing it. Aidan O'Brien and Kieran Fallon are world class in horsemanship yet neither had any of the 'nature' factor. Horses on the other hand is 'nature', i.e. breeding. Having said that it is freaks of nature that give us, well freaks, and paranormnal refers to exceptionally bad as well as good. And there is evidence that while on average the great are bred of the great, the greatest may not come from the greatest, and of course it gets further complicated when the traits are mixed, well it takes two to tango! The most expensive racehorse ever sold (in real terms) couldn't beat a fat man running down a hill. Funnily enough it was a traveller man who advised Robert Sangster to drop out of the bidding and let the Sheiks cough up, now there's nurturing as travellers are peerless in horsemanship. In case anyone is getting confused don't worry, this issue has evaded mankind so if we crack it we will some freaks ourselves, and hopefully the good type, the good bacteria type! GAA is also an ethnic game so I suppose our TCD genetics professor wasn't having his finest hour when he discounted the breeding aspect of a Kerry footballer. Regarding the creativity gene, Galvin's trait in that respect is evidence in his fashion career and his teacher had actually identified a trait of literary writing in him; don't know if they made the link themselves, I picked it up from the book and I don't know how Noel O'Leary got it, all I know is he did. Galvin was a creative player and that combined with his determination and physical ability would have been key attributes in his success. Different Kings of Kingdom is due a rework/rewrite methinks!

That is an educated guess. I have put a good bit of it down in Word this evening, I will finish it off and paste it into a post. I have a copy of a publication called Kerry's Golden Heroes, issued by the Co. Board in 2000. It lists the subs who got medals as well as those who played in the final.
It is difficult to be definitive about these things, but I think I can come close.

I'll post this in a couple of posts as it is very large:
To note at the outset: we all remember in 1997 that Mike Hassett did not get a medal as precedence went to those who had played in the AI series, and in that year the full allocation of 21 was used by those who played in the AI series. In earlier decades, being in the official panel for the final counted. If you played in the SF, but were not on the panel for the final, you could expect to miss out.
The late Eddie Dowling of Ballydonoghue was probably Kerry's unluckiest man regarding an All-Ireland medal. He started the SF in 1946 as captain, was dropped, but came on as sub in the drawn final. He did not play in the replay (I think through injury) and did not get a medal.
Donie O’Sullivan was not available for the 1962 final owing to being a Maynooth student, but he was listed in the subs. I am unsure as to whether they thought he would get dispensation at the last minute, or if it was to secure him a medal in recognition of having played the SF, but he is listed.
All players listed played in the AI Final (started or as sub) unless stated otherwise:

Jack Flavin( Moyvane) has a unique history; he won 2 AI senior medals with Kerry, his second in 1937 when Kerry beat Galway in the final. In 1938 he went to work in Galway and played for Galway and won another AI medal with them against his native Kerry!! A friend of mine, now deceased always maintained that the Kerry team of that era should have won 5 on a row- they won in '37, 39, 40 & 41- the loss to Galway in '38 was the one that "got away"- Joe Keohane did not play with Kerry in '38 either due to a dispute with the county board.
