Big game coming up for Kerry. You would expect them to win this particular home game and qualify for the league semi finals. It will be interesting to see if any of the u21s are added to the match day list.

Colm Cooper a step closer to Kerry comeback
Thursday, March 19, 2015
By Tony Leen
COLM Cooper has completed a small but significant stage in his rehabilitation from a cruciate ligament tear.
Cooper stepped up his recovery by playing a part in a full-contact inter-squad game in Killarney on St Patrick's morning, lining out at centre half forward.
Cooper moved well in the match and suffered no injury setbacks.
Kerry manager Eamonn Fitzmaurice has yet to target a specific date for Gooch's competitive return from the serious knee injury, sustained with his club Dr Crokes over 13 months ago.

Good to see the Gooch getting closer to getting back into action. I'd imagine he might target county league games with Crokes before playing for Kerry. August is a long time away. Colm would not be too long getting match fit.

For a small county, it is interesting to see how much Monaghan have progressed over the past 10 years. They are consistently in the top 10 teams in the country & generally very competitive. Good to see them competing well in Division 1. Their template (whatever it is) looks like something that should be replicated in other counties.

Monaghan has a very small population, 4th lowest and half that of Louth and which we tend to forget has two main population centres in Dundalk and Drogheda. Here's a list of all counties by population. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Irish_counties_by_populationAnd yip, if you read that list from the bottom you will see that Monaghan do well given the population and there appears to be a lot of good teams in the middle. I suppose a smaller percentage in city counties play GAA as there are more options and there would also be more foreign nationals in urban that in rural areas. Of course population isn't everything and our 6 Nations Rugby win proves that and as do London and New York GAA teams. It does nevertheless throw up interesting points though. How many of us are aware of the concentration of hurling where the best land is, although Dublin might be an exception and no, I don't know how good the land is in London or New York.

Good to see them competing well in Division 1. Their template (whatever it is) looks like something that should be replicated in other counties. Their win in the Ulster final was a huge milestone in 2013 and a great achievement, but mentally then they seemed to think that's enough for this year and get turned over by Tyrone, in CavRugbygate. In Banty's days they had a good team and without winning Ulster gave us two massive battles in Croker. However one year on from winning Ulster they get steamrolled by Dublin after putting up only 20 mins of resistance. The population stats provided by Kman are definitely a very positive reflection on the quality of footballer in the county and the low numbers certainly surprised me. I think they lack discipline and steely belief and hunger for the biggest prize. On their day they are a formidable opponent, but their days are consistently inconsistent and at present there's no All Ireland in them. They're missing 3-4 more quality players,at least, particularly forwards to move them up to a level where they might be realistic challengers.

As a people the're are of a steely and measured demeanour, top class GAA ingredients. The more I think the more I feel the numbers is a decisive factor. Rugby wouldn't be big but soccer might be and then not all of the community would be traditional GAA folk as is the case elsewhere.
GAA in Kerry has a massive local presence, even if only the hand of history alone, a bit like Silicon Valley and technology, you'd have to live there to appreciate the difference as opposed to defining and analysing it theoretically. I have lived both in Kerry and outside it for considerable periods and I think that magnifies the difference with other counties. People living in Kerry often find this hard to believe although I think the results support it. As an exile I also find myself more drawn to it that I would at home, and for similar reason and I find it peculiar that folk from other counties think that just because we are from Kerry that we are Gods of the game, and who am I to contradict.
If the GAA was to do research on what makes good teams I'd say that Monaghan might throw up some interesting facts and trends that may also prevail elsewhere, if less obvious.
Donegal is also unique in that soccer would have more followers and I suppose the intrinsic links to Celtic is significant. There are parishes that don't have GAA clubs and many stronghold clubs today were only established late, E.g. Fanad and Killybegs in the '60s, although I stand corrected on the latter.
I know of a story of a then young Fanad man in around the 50's who had never even seen a match until he went boarding in Galway; on returning home at xMas he relayed that 'they play football but you can handle the ball.' I also know of a village where a newly erected Gaelic football posts were 'dehorned', i.e. the uprights cut at cross bar level, but sin sceal eile and I don't have all the background factors, well apart from the fact that it was a newly appointed parish priest who erected them.
Gaelic football in Donegal is now taken very serious and the atmosphere after the AI confirmed that; they are now as bad as ourselves in their expectations and I suppose the scent of victory has that effect, it is addictive and the auld bit of greed sets in. Donegal would also have more soccer role models that Gaelic. I believe all the '92 team played soccer and maybe this factor will auger well as the skills are very similar; isn't soccer closer to Gaelic that Aussie rules? Funny how over such a small area that Ireland is, there is such stark contrast in the GAA landscape.

Monaghan's results in the league so far
Tyrone 0-09 Monaghan 1-13
Monaghan 1-16 Cork 2-14
Mayo 3-15 Monaghan 0-11
Donegal 1-04 Monaghan 0-09
Monaghan 0-15 Derry 0-10

Interesting league campaign by Monaghan
First game was the Tyrone game where the lights went out, Cork game was won at the death by Cork - Monaghan could easily have ended up drawing that or getting the win by all accounts, Mayo game was a meltdown - got 2 red cards and could well have got a 3rd, Donegal game was slated by everyone who saw it, the Derry game must have come as a relief in that it was relatively boring although Derry did have a goal disallowed for square ball.
A key factor for Monaghan is that they are now on 6 points now with 2 wins in their last 2 games and as such look fairly safe from relegation, especially compared to where they were after 3 games when they were sitting on 2 points and their next game away to Donegal. Their last game is Dublin at home so I doubt they will be too complacent.

Will be interesting to see if Ryan Wylie and Ryan McAnespie are involved with the seniors given Monaghan have an U21 game the following Wednesday against Donegal and both would be huge players for the U21 team.
Both have already had serious involvement with the seniors in the league and with such a small squad could well be a factor.

This is an absolute must win game for Monaghan, as they will be in the mix for relegation if they dont. I would expect them to park the bus. I dont think that it will be good enough to get a result down in Kerry.
They are good though. I would forgive them for losing to Dublin the way they did last year, as they had played so many fixtures before this match. Tyrone, Armagh twice, Donegal in the ulster final, Kildare including extra time 6 days before the dublin game. They were not in good shape for a match against dublin.
I think that Kerry going to Tyrone on the last day of the league will need to be above the 6 point mark. They should be. There is an awful lot of football to be played in the league yet.

There certainly is, the league is very much in the melting pot with fine lines between relegation survival and making the semi finals.

The thing for Monaghan is that while they aren't safe yet they know the odds of them getting relegated now are fairly small.
The fact that the 2 teams on 4 points Donegal and Tyrone are playing each other, make things that a lot more comfortable for Monaghan.
Monaghan even if they lose both remaining games have a very decent chance of staying up, especially as they already have a win in terms of a head-to-head versus Tyrone.
The current bookies odds for relegation are as follows [no odds for Derry]
Tyrone 8/15 Donegal 11/4 Monaghan 13/2 Kerry 12/1 Dublin 20/1

Does it not go down to points differential rather than head to head results should teams be on the same points? If that is the case, then they are untouchable by either Tyrone or Donegal. That means they would automatically stay up rather than be given odds of 13/2 to do so.
Yes you are correct, head to head is taken into account before points differential. This makes things very different and difficult indeed.

If we lose we are depending on Tyrone beating Donegal which would leave the latter with a maximum of six and give us the advantage in a head to head situation. Best to take matters into our own hands next Sunday rather than depend on the kindness of Tyrone! And coming out of this match injury free will be as important as winning. I remember the last time we met in Inniskeen which we won comfortably but resulted in David Moran being out of contention for a couple of years. And wasn't the previous meeting where the Gooch sustained an eye injury that kept him out of a couple of matches?

The challenge on Sunday for Kerry is to put two good performances back to back.
They were good v Dublin, bad v Cork and good v Donegal.
The game v Tyrone will take on a life of its own so getting focused for this will be their biggest problem. If they play well they should have too much for Monaghan but a performance like the ones against Mayo or Cork and they wont do.

I could be wrong about this but the last time I recall Monaghan playing Kerry at home was a very hot day in April on the final day of the Masters in Augusta. Kerry needed a win to guarantee progress to the latter stages of the league and Monaghan needed to lose by no more than a margin of 5 points or so to avoid relegation. And that's what happened. The Monaghan team landed into the Tatler after and the Masters on the box. Banty was one of the first in the door and sat down beside me. I had to do a double take. All talk about the game and that. An absolute gentleman I must say. There was some craic that night. The rest of the squad followed in after and what a down to earth bunch. It could have been 09 or 2010. I recall it being a lively enough old game too. No holds barred!

Surely Conor Keanes worth a start for this game seeing he's pulverized every opposition he's come up against for the last 15 months for both club and county. 1-7 out of 1-9 against Cork for the U 21's says enough in itself

If my memory is right that was the day Gooch got the eye injury, Eamonn Fitz (a selector at the time) got involved on the pitch with Dick Clerkin after a dust up in front of the Kerry dugout and Declan got sent off right at the end of the game. There was a lot going on all over the pitch that day. I also think the referee was our friend from Calre who was in charge of the latest Donegal league game. The two championship games were the 1/4 final in 07 and the 4th round qualifier in 08.

It was a "neutral " venue in 2008 as it was the last round of the qualifiers. We made 4 trips to Croke Park in quick succession around that time with that game, the quarter and 2 semi-finals. What time is throw in on Sunday? 2pm?
