You will find yourself in this sort of dilemma when you play club in one county and intercounty with another. Ask Jack O'Shea. He played for Leixlip in the run up to the 1986 All Ireland Final against the wishes of the Kerry selectors. Its an awful dilemma to be in. I think that the comments on Logue are unfair. I agree that Murphy should start the next day for the simple reason that he didn't put a foot wrong yesterday. Sorry, Mick, I can't agree with you there. County identity and pride is a critical part of the Irish psyche, and especially so when it comes to the GAA. To choose a first round club game over the biggest Kerry hurling game of the year says a lot about Logue's affinity with the Kingdom. It's a huge disrespect to Kerry hurling, in my view. And if he values the club fixture more then fine, good luck to him, he is a Tipp man after all. But that's the point, really - he has no real commitment to the Kerry team and, that being the case, he shouldn't be there. I'm sure there's many a lad in Kilmoyley or Abbeydorney would give their right arm for the chance. Not that you'd be much use as a hurling goalie without a right arm.

One things for sure is he should lose his starting place for the first round of the Christy Ring. He made his choice yesterday and picked his club when Kerry needed him. Why now should Stephen Murphy lose out? Kildare i believe are another team who are big into bringing outsiders. It may bring some short term success but is no good in the long run. Like i said before Kerry wont be able to use these lads in 1B next year. A lot of these players are just using the likes of Kerry to get them more experience so they can make their own county team. James Logue has even said he's long team goal is to be the starting Tipp keeper! On the subject of keepers, why isn't Tadhg Flynn still on the panel? Respectfully disagree, hurlingman. He should be told to f*ck off altogether. Why? And this is a question to all of ye who have criticised the guy. I'd be pretty disappointed in Fionn Fitz, James, Star etc if they didn't put the club first. As regards the player using Kerry as a springboard to playing for his own county, well it ain't like we're not getting something out of him too, and he is still an amateur just like anyone else. If Kerry hurling needs some of these guys as a springboard to future development of the game...................and let's not forget that many Kerry fella's pretty much told Kerry hurling to "f*ck off" a few years ago (I think when John Meyler was in charge).............plus a certain Kerry footballer was already to tell his club to "f*ck off" a few years ago so he could ponce about in Australia in the Mickey Mouse series v the Aussies!!! So that James Logue made the right call Saturday, club before county always.

Fionn, Star etc wouldn't miss a crucial Kerry match to play in a club game. If they did, their days in the County panel would be numbered. Same with any other county, I'd imagine. For sure, Logue wouldn't get away with it if it was Tipp he was playing for; so why should it be any different when it comes to us. Is Kerry hurling not deserving of equal respect as other counties?

The only reason Fionn, Star etc aren't put in that position is obvious, but if it did ever come about I would expect them to choose those whom they've played with since they were ~7 years old. James Logue isn't at fault at all here , nor is anyother county. This is simply a downside of using players from other counties. And clearly using players from other counties has it upsides, if used correctly then we can in a few years become self sufficient and rely soley on Kerry born players. Think about what yer actually saying here....should a guy really be kicked off an intercounty panel/told to "f*ck off" for choosing his club over county?

One of the curses of Kerry hurling down the years is that very often some players were not prepared to give the same commitment to the county as they would to their club. In some cases this was due to the incestuous nature club hurling in Kerry. It is not that long ago that the manager of the minor team complained that a lot of lads were not turning up for training etc after giving a promise that they would.
It appears to me that fellows are now proud to wear the county hurling jersey. Kerry hurling can only prosper if that attitude prevails. The fact that outside recruits have an a la carte approach will only hinder the goodwill and respect that Kerry hurling is now garnering. I say, rather than our hurling team acting as a nursery for temporary, unreliable imports, get rid of them and engage home grown players who will give their heart and soul to the green and gold jersey.

I don't blame the guy for having his own priorities and I don't mean to be hard on him. But if he can't commit to Kerry when he's most needed because his loyalties are elsewhere, then he's no use to us.

Too much talk about these imports. U would swear we had loads of them. Kerry used 17 players on Saturday and 16 of them were native Kerrymen. I don't have an issue with using one or two of them but no more than that. There are 8 senior clubs in Kerry and 3 intermediate so we should be able to put out a top class Christy Ring team from 11 clubs at that club standard.
Kerry had many heroes on Saturday. Daniel Collins was superb at wing back. His long season in 2014 with the Kilmoyley hurlers and Ardfert footballers hasn't effected him at all. Shane Nolan, Colm Harty and Micheal O'Leary the pick of the forwards. John Griffin got through a mountain of work as usual at midfield. A super captain. Hopefully the team can go on to claim the Christy Ring cup now. A lot of pressure on them to do now with the burden of favouritism.

This is farcical that the goalkeeper is off playing club hurling in Tipperary while Kerry play this hugely important game at the weekend. The same thing happened last year when we were playing Offaly. I see where there is a David Butler added to the panel. Is this the guy who went off to play with his club last year rather than play against Offaly? A farce upon farce. This is not the way to gain respectability for Kerry hurling. One things for sure is he should lose his starting place for the first round of the Christy Ring. He made his choice yesterday and picked his club when Kerry needed him. ‘There’s only one John Egan’
Monday, April 13, 2015
Paul Keane
KERRY 2-16 ANTRIM 1-18: An hour after Saturday’s game had ended, the Kerry players were still lifting the roof of their Parnell Park dressing-room with song.
The one getting most air time was ‘One John Egan, there’s only one John Egan’. There were also several renditions of, ‘We’re going up, we’re going up, Kerry are going up’, sang to the tune of England’s Euro ’96 ditty, ‘football’s coming home’.
That was apt because normally it is indeed football that’s coming home to Kerry.
But on this rare occasion the Kingdom hurlers returned from Dublin with the most sizeable of bounties, promotion to Division 1B of the Allianz hurling league.
A chasm admittedly exists between 1B and 1A but that’s dwindling all the time and Kerry can rightfully call themselves a top flight hurling county now.
It’s an incredible achievement and one made possible by Egan whose 71st minute point — 14 minutes after coming onto the field — finally shrugged off Antrim’s determined challenge.
On various occasions, particularly at half-time when Antrim led 0-11 to 0-3, it appeared the league status quo would be maintained. But unlike 12 months ago, when Kerry died a death in this same fixture in the second-half against Offaly, they rose terrifically to the occasion this time, blasting holes through the history books with 2-13 in that period.
“I’m delighted John Egan got that score,” said Kerry manager Eamonn Kelly. “John came on the last day in the Division 2A final against Westmeath and we had to take him off which was an awful thing. But John is a born leader and he’s a huge part of our panel. We had the belief to try him again today and I’m absolutely delighted he got the winner. He’s a key part of our panel.”
In all, Kerry have finished top or joint top of Division 2A in each of the last three seasons and won the title outright twice, in 2014 and 2015. Even Antrim’s captain Neil McManus conceded before the game Kerry shouldn’t have had to contest a further promotion/relegation play-off.
“The system?,” asked Kelly of a promotion/relegation set-up which clearly favours the 1B teams. “I don’t mind now, we’re on the other side of it! Do you know what, if you win your division, you should really go up. I’m saying that aside from what happened here and us winning this match.
“There’s nearly a glass ceiling there stopping the 2A teams going up. Hopefully now we can hold our own. Antrim have been very competitive all year in 1B. They’ve only lost some games by one or two points, we went toe to toe with them so maybe we’re not that far away.”
Kerry certainly had some impressive performers who won’t look out of place in the big league. Shane Nolan was superb at times. He fired 0-8 and rose to the occasion in the last 20 minutes or so with some stunning shooting from acute angles on the wings. In general play, he got through a ton of work.
Colm Harty fired two important goals, albeit his second was a tap in after a dispossession in the Antrim defence that was recycled to leave his finish a formality. Kelly name checked Patrick Kelly for his performance too.
In truth, Antrim shouldn’t have led by as much as they did at half-time. Kerry blasted nine wides in the opening half and wasted three goal chances, perhaps inspired by the five they shot early on against Westmeath. They ultimately got the job done though and can target the Christy Ring Cup success now.
The future is a few shades darker for Antrim.
“It’s seriously damaging,” said Saffrons manager Kevin Ryan. “It’s going to be difficult to pick everyone up. It’s up to the players to decide whether they want us driving it on for them or whether they want someone else.
“They probably don’t at this stage of the season. But they’ve got to decide, the board has to decide.”
As for the failure to carve out victory having been level three times late on, Ryan shrugged.
“It was in our own hands. We had it twice, we had it at half-time and after Kerry came back a us, we had it again.
“We just talked about it with them, we just aren’t good enough to hold onto it. ”
Scorers for Kerry:
S Nolan (0-8, five frees), C Harty (2-0), M O’Leary (0-4), D Collins, J Griffin, P Kelly and J Egan (0-1 each).
Scorers for Antrim:
P Shiels (0-7, seven frees), PJ O’Connell (1-2), C Clarke (0-3), N McAuley, N McManus, M Bradley, M Donnelly, C Johnson and M Dudley (0-1 each).
Subs for Kerry:
J Egan for Carmody (57),JFlaherty for P Boyle (63).
Subs for Antrim:
C Johnson for McAlonan (h/t), M Dudley for Carson (43), D Hamill for Bradley (59).
Referee:
S Cleere (Kilkenny).

They have to either have a parent from the county or be living/working there

What prevented the Tipp club game from being moved or changed???
Gaa didn't help here by fixing when a clash was on but I assume it couldn't be helped.
What is his connection to Kerry by the way, is he working here???

www.rte.ie/sport/gaa/hurling/2015/0413/693796-kerry-hurlers-promoted-eamonn-kelly/The national media are saying that it was a shock Kerry defeated Antrim, down through the years we were always a match for Antrim and there was never much between the sides, Last year the lads gave Offaly a right game of it,leading by 8 points at one stage before fading in the second half so winning this year shouldn't be classed as a shock.

Kerry club games are at the mercy of Kerry intercounty games; it would hardly be fair if they were to be at the mercy of another counties intercounty games. It's a downside of using players from another county, no solution just got to live with it.

TG4 once again prove why they are a great resource
Live TV deal boosts hurling's small fry
Kildare hurling captain Eanna O'Neill hopes first-time live TV coverage of the Christy Ring Cup final will finally earn some recognition for hurling's minnows. The Nicky Rackard final will also be covered live by TG4 on June 6, who will also broadcast deferred coverage of the Lory Meagher final. "It's good to see TG4 on board because last year we got the sense that we were an inconvenience, like 'we're running this off quickly, we're not even showing the games on television'," said O'Neill who captained Kildare to 2014 Christy Ring victory. "'The Sunday Game' that night showed about two minutes of our All-Ireland final against Kerry. It was a great match with a big scoreline but two minutes couldn't possibly bring it to a bigger audience." This year's Christy Ring winners will automatically be promoted to Leinster's round-robin in 2016. The Nicky Rackard and Lory Meagher Cups will also start on Saturday week and run for four consecutive weeks before a week's break to the finals.

Given the decline in their football fortunes recently the current joke locally is: What do you call a Kildare player who has won All-Ireland and National League medals in the past 12 months?
Kildare bounced back from relegation last year to win the Christy Ring and have since won six from six to win Division 2B, securing promotion and beating Meath in the final.
They are captained by Eanna O'Neill, 24, a strength and conditioning student at Limerick IT (based on their Thurles campus) who has rubbed shoulders with hurlers of all hues.
O'Neill has played in an LIT Fitzgibbon Cup team that included Tony Kelly and was managed by Davy Fitzgerald, a man, he says, who didn't care where you were from as long as you could do the business on the field.
Kildare and 19 other counties - including last year's beaten Christy Ring finalists Kerry, who have since beaten Antrim to earn a place in Division 1B next year - have an early championship start this Saturday.
Kildare start their title defence with a tricky trip to London and one boost for those vying for the Ring, Rackard and Meagher Cups is that TG4 will show all three finals for the first time next month.
Yet it still feels like their competitions are rushed through before the main event starts.
Four rounds will take place over the next four weekends before a week's break ahead of the finals on June 6 and they're not the only ones with a hectic schedule. The first round of Leinster's round-robin preliminary group also takes place this Sunday, at the exact same time as the Allianz HL Division 1 final is live on TV.
Last summer, a week after winning their trophy, Kildare had to play Westmeath for a place in Leinster's round robin this season.
"That came as an awful disappointment," admits the Coill Dubh wing-back.
"We thought the GAA might have re-fixed it or had a look at it. To ask boys to play six weeks in a row is an awful toll on the body.
"We had to celebrate winning the Christy Ring because if we held it off to a week later and lost we'd have had nothing worth celebrating, we'd have been on a downer," he explained. "It was also down in Westmeath so we were fighting an uphill battle from the start."
That play-off, at least, has been scrapped. This year's Christy Ring winners will automatically join Leinster in 2016, a major carrot for the defending champions, but O'Neill, like many colleagues, remains puzzled by the undue haste to get their games out of the way.
"We train the exact same as any other inter-county panel," he stresses. "We set up in October or November, put in all the ground work but then it's all over five or six weeks into the summer, when you're only getting into the good weather, and good ground, for hurling."

I found it funny to see Eamonn Kelly say he has no choice but to pick outside players, because there are no more he can pick in Kerry. I'd love to know how hard he looked and how many games hes actually seen, ore so outside of seinor teams

Kerry senior hurlers open their Christy Ring Cup campaign at home to Down on this Saturday, 2nd May at Austin Stack Park, 1.00p.m.

The Kerry hurling public are encouraged to come out and support the team. All under 16’s have free admission. At half time there will be an under 12 Go Game between Tralee Parnell’s and a Killarney selection.
Other round 1 games this Saturday are London v Kildare; Derry v Mayo and Meath v Wicklow.
