They held off naming the team till later in the week until the "Donaghy dropped" thing became big news on the Monday/Tuesday last year if memory serves? Just looking to avoid that drama again I guess.

Just looking to avoid that drama again I guess. Maybe the selectors could keep their mouth shut so after they pick the team and before its released to the media I get the whole "Kerry is a small place" thing. But surely if you told the players the team after training on the Thursday (they would have a fair idea anyway) and then release it to the media on the Friday night we wouldn't be giving our opponents 4 days to prepare for our team before they name theirs. It just seems a natural progression from training behind closed doors to me.

I am pretty sure teams have to be named before Friday to allow the organizing committee (Munster council, Croke Park) print up programs etc..
In reality by naming a team on Tuesday an opposing team may have one training session before the game to alter tactics, and chances are that training session will be pretty light.. I don't think it is that realistic that the opposing team is going to devise some whole new scheme of play and perfect it in one light training session.. Sure they can devise 'tactics', but having a plan is one thing, but having time to put it into practice is another thing.. the reality is they probably have had 40 or 50 minutes of ball work to practice what ever 'massive' changes they are working on. Like was mentioned earlier I think it is a good thing naming the team well in advance, it is a win for the players as they know where they stand, and won't be getting the constant "is so and so going to start the next day" for the week leading into an important game.. It is a win for the fans as it generates a bit of excitement and debate!
I don't think anyone saw the game plan for the Cork game from the team that was named, likewise I am sure Eamon is clever enough to have a few tricks up his sleeves with the team on Sunday.

Just watched the whole munster final again and as what I witnessed in the ground on the day I think the fitness was most impressive. Do people think the theory of it taking a fitness coach two years to see the benefits is now starting to bear fruit. Kerry finished both championship games strongly so far?

If we are serious contenders to beat mayo then a 5 or 6 point win needed

Anniscannestilidie That is some statistic, the last game I can remember facing a deficit and adversity is 1/4 v Armagh in 06. Can this be a team that will pull through in a tight battle, without having a cushioned lead to rely on? I would expect not to need to find out until the semis. Cian O'Neill's conditioning influence I think is definitely becoming more tangible. What is also evident, is the unity among the players. There was some amount of love being shared on pitch after Cork game. This might seem like a basic requirement, but many teams don't have it and becomes evident when things start going wrong during the game and heads drop and the me feiners run loose. Hopefully our guys will weather any storm brewing and finish strong. Finish strong them boys!!!!

ALL-IRELAND SFC QUARTER-FINAL: Kerry v Galway Paul Geaney made his senior debut for Kerry in the opening game of the 2011 league against Cork, coming off the bench for his cousin David and scoring a goal.
Unfortunately for the Kingdom, they would go down by a point and Geaney would have to wait over two years for his championship bow as a sub against Cavan in last year’s All-Ireland quarter-final.
Injuries have ravaged the Dingle man, but – as three points in the Munster final showed – 2014 is about making up for lost time.
“Last year was the year that I thought I would make the breakthrough,” he said, “because Eamonn [Fitzmaurice] had just been appointed manager and I knew that he had time for me. He knew the kind of player I was and the potential that I had, but last year I had a torrid time.
“The worst thing about it was that it was two years ago that I went about sorting out my hamstring problem, my back problem was missed and it wasn’t until a year later that it was picked up.
“I had been injected first time around and a year later it showed up that I had broken vertebrae in my back. That was one of the most frustrating parts of it, that it could have been done a year earlier, but, on the flip side, I would have missed out on a county championship final appearance with Dingle in 2012.
“In hindsight, having lost the final, it might have been better to have got it sorted and not allowing it to drift on but these are the things you have to contend with, when injuries strike, there is never a right time. ”
Geaney won’t be 24 until late November, but having to overcome so many setbacks has served to steel him.
“It has definitely helped me psychologically because I have been knocked back so many times now over the past couple of years, that I don’t think there is anything that could be thrown at me now that would break me.
“The way I been looking at it over the past year I suppose, with the recovery from my back injury, then the getting over the hamstring problems, this year I am the fittest I have ever been.
“Coming through so much adversity, has boosted my confidence levels and it’s showing in my play.”
It certainly showed during the spring, when Geaney captained UCC to the Sigerson Cup title. Having come close in the previous two years was frustrating, but manager Billy Morgan was persuaded to stay on and that reaped dividends.
Geaney has nothing but praise for the managerial skills of the former Cork boss.
“Billy is great and he is very accommodating,” he says.
“He is a great man-manager which was a great help to me, especially since I was training with Kerry.
“He gave me the captaincy this year, which is something I didn’t take lightly and it meant a lot to me that Billy knew that. He knows every player and what he can contribute, He knows that characters he has in the dressing room.
“In that sense, he is top notch, and he is a good tactician as well. I know he has a reputation for not liking Kerrymen but that’s only in the head-to-heads. I think Billy has a lot more time for Kerry lads than he lets on to the public!”

Safe journey to all travelling to Dublin and Thurles on Monday. It will be a big disappointment if we don't win both. I am glad that Galway are "wiseing" up a bit and becoming a bit defensive minded. Winning a shoot out with a Galway side that is naïve at the back is of no use in the long run.
I hope we see Peter Crowley at some point on Sunday. We need him back in form. He reminds me of a young Paidi circa 1975. We need as much steel as we can muster. Lots of enforcers out there in the teams that are left. They will have to be faced down if we are to go all the way............. which being realistic is unlikely in 2014.

A great game, would rather watch this all day than some of the defensive stuff we have had to sit through in recent years. This is far more absorbing and fascinating (to quote Des Cahill) than watching buses parked from the 45 yard line.

I think we'd all rather watch this but it probably wouldn't do us much good later on, if we do proceed.

Gonna be watching this in Cannes. Normally not a very demanding fan but ..well a one point win would be nice hi. Cannes is it? A Tidy step from East West Kerry then. Isn't it well for ye!!! There seemed to be a good turnout to watch the training session last night and a fair few non-Kerry cars parked outside, so lots of interest in what we're at. Best of luck to all involved with Kerry on Sunday and safe journey to all. Ciarrai Abu.

One really has to laugh...The merchants of doom (of whom there were many) were on here all the Autumn, Winter, Spring & Summer claiming that Kerry were finished and that they feared the Kerry Senior Football Team were in for a very long famine. For a 2nd year in a row they were heading for a relegation (didn't happen) and the Munster Championship looked beyond them for definite (did happen). Some were even certain that it would be the 1st year ever they they would not have appeared in the 1/4 Finals. Panic seemed to have set in amongst even the most "respected" members of this great forum. The euphoria of beating Cork has all but evaporated and now people are saying we need to hammer Galway to be seen as serious contenders for the main title.
Well Well Well...They are in an All Ireland Quarter Final tomorrow and there hasn't been single post on here about the game in 27 hours!!! Comical stuff.

I'd suggest this forum is light years ahead of most when it comes to reasoned and reasonably informed discussion. Just look at RTE for example to see the sort of ignorant / abusive/ illiterate sh*ite that passes for public comment elsewhere.

weather is like 2008, same result to, Galway have a few nice players but i think they are poor enough, this Galway team had a poor league, laois beat them by 15 point's, they beat sligo to get to the connacht final and were well beaten, tipp hit 4 goals and could have had 6, kerry by 10 points pitch will be poor with all the rain.

I'm usually an optimist and I do still think that we will win but this game has a bit of a Down 2010 fell about it to me. I dont know why though-it just does

Bryan's comments in yesterday's Independent were stark regarding the Down game in 2010, basically saying they had not prepared for the game. That game is a great help for today and losing won't be caused by that. Look, if we can't beat Galway then we're saving emotional heartache for end of August/September. Galway are improving and have forwards who will cause problems, but they are too inexperienced and concede huge scores. A diligent focused performance from Kerry will win this game. Darragh and Tomas have surely given Galway some belly fire, add to that Breheny's well reasoned article yesterday basically stating that if Galway stop being losers we could appreciate them as a football team. From that I'd expect some decent physicality, but other than the 'never say never' argument which could apply to any game on any day, there's no solidified evidence to say Galway can win this game, not this year. The logical prediction is a Kerry win with a bit to spare, that'll do for me.
