Holders Cork maintained their hopes of a top-four finish in Division 1 of the Tesco Homegrown Ladies National Football League with a comprehensive victory over Laois on Sunday. The All-Ireland champions ran out 3-19 to 0-04 winners at Cork IT and victory over Tyrone in next weekend’s final group fixture would see the Leesiders safely through to the semi-finals. Cork were 1-8 to 0-00 in front within 15 minutes before Laois bagged their opening score in the 23rd minute. Orla Finn had netted Cork’s opening goal and Eamonn Ryan’s charges were 1-11 to 0-03 in front by half-time. Ryan made a number of changes at the break, including the withdrawal of his entire starting forward line, but the hosts pushed on relentlessly in the second half. A penalty from Emma Farmer was followed by Orlagh Farmer’s goal and Cork were boosted further by the return of Norita Kelly to intercounty football, following a stint abroad. Elsewhere, Dublin and Kerry made sure of semi-final spots with big wins over Tyrone and Mayo respectively. Lyndsey Davey scored all four goals for Dublin on their visit to Tyrone as the Sky Blues ran out emphatic 4-19 to 0-09 winners, while in Killarney Munster champions Kerry defeated Mayo by 4-15 to 0-10. Mayo travelled without absent forward Cora Staunton and All Star goalkeeper Yvonne Byrne and the Westerners now look set to miss out on a top four finish. That would be a setback for Peter Clarke’s side as Mayo contested last year’s League final against Cork. Playing with a strong wind from the start, Kerry led by 2-10 to 0-02 by the end of a one-sided first half. Sarah Houlihan netted in the tenth minute before Debra Murphy added a second goal for the Kingdom just before the back. Mayo were more competitive in the second half but Kerry added goals from Deirdre Corridan and Amy Foley to clinch a 17-point win. In Division 2, there were victories for Clare, Cavan and Galway and in Division 3, Wexford, Tipperary, Armagh and Waterford emerged with wins from their fixtures. Tesco Homegrown National Football League Division 1 Tyrone 0-09 Dublin 4-19 Cork 3-19 Laois 0-04 Kerry 4-15 Mayo 0-10 Division 2 Clare 3-08 Westmeath 1-13 Fermanagh 0-03 Cavan 4-20 Meath 1-08 Galway 7-13 Division 3 Offaly 1-06 Wexford 5-11 Armagh 4-09 Sligo 3-10 Tipperary 0-15 Longford 1-07 Waterford 6-08 Leitrim 3-08 Division 4 Limerick 2-11 Antrim 2-10 Roscommon 3-12 Louth 0-04

Good luck to the ladies on Sunday. Hopefully a win for them to set them back on track. The Castleisland ladies showing the way. The defending O'Connor Cup champions UL put in an impressive performance to beat DCU at St Clare's on Thursday February 26 and so qualify for the Semi-finals with Castleisland captain Lorraine Scanlon having a great game.

GREGORY MCGONIGLE’S DUBLIN slumped to a second defeat in Division 1 of the Tesco Ladies National Football League today. Last year’s beaten League and All-Ireland finalists lost by 2-8 to 3-11 on their visit to Kerry and are now outside of the crucial top four play-off places. The sides were level at half-time – 2-6 apiece – with Dublin captain Lyndsey Davey and Carla Rowe registering goals for the visitors. Sarah Houlihan and veteran forward Patrice Dennehy netted for the Kingdom, who managed to hold Dublin to just two points in the second half. Kerry outscored the Sky Blues by 1-5 to 0-2 in the second period in Killarney and Louise Galvin’s goal with 13 minutes remaining sealed a comfortable win. Dublin also lost All Star Sinead Goldrick to injury ten minutes from time. Meanwhile, Cathriona McConnell scored 1-7 for Monaghan in their massive 1-19 to 2-0 victory over bottom-of-the-table Laois. Noirin Kirwan and Martha Kirwan scored second half goals for hosts Laois in Crettyard but Monaghan were ahead by 1-13 to 0-0 at half-time. Monaghan were in complete control during the first half and McConnell put the visitors on their way to a big win with the only goal of the game in the fourth minute. Meanwhile, Mayo superstar Cora Staunton was in red-hot form for the Westerners once again. Staunton scored nine of Mayo’s 12 points in Swinford as the home side beat Tyrone by 0-12 to 1-4. At half-time, Mayo were 0-6 to 0-2 in front but it was Tyrone who got off to the better start with the opening two scores of the game. Mayo hit back with points from Staunton, Rachel Kearns and Fiona McHale to hit the front. Mayo went on to lead by four at half-time and while Tyrone registered the opening score of the second half through Joline Donnelly, the home side stormed 0-9 to 0-3 clear. Gemma Begley netted a penalty goal for Tyrone but the Red Hands remain deep in relegation trouble and pointless from their opening four League outings. Last Friday evening, holders Cork maintained their steady form with a third victory from four outings. The League and All-Ireland champions pulled off another of those Houdini acts they have become famous for as late points from sub Áine O’Sullivan and Rhona Ní Bhuachalla sealed a 1-14 to 3-7 win over Galway. Tracey Leonard goaled in the first half for Galway, who led by 1-5 to 0-7 at Mourneabbey. Edel Concannon and Leonard added further goals for the Tribeswomen in the second half, with Grace Kearney on target for Cork, before the hosts snatched a late win. Tesco Ladies National Football League results Division 1 Laois 2-0 Monaghan 1-19 Mayo 0-12 Tyrone 1-4 Kerry 3-11 Dublin 2-8 Cork 1-14 Galway 3-7 (Played on Friday evening). Great game, great display. Kerry, with the wind, dominated the first half. Cork had plenty of possession - built mostly from short kickouts - but couldn't pierce a fantastic Kerry defence.I thought Cait Lynch gave an exhibition, with Aisling Leonard not far behind her, but they were all good. Against Cork, they'd have to be in fairness! I will say that I thought Valerie Mulcahy missed a few point chances that she could normally put over in her sleep - I mean no criticism of a fantastic player, that's just an honest observation, and a warning for Kerry, Valerie might have an 'off' day, but she has never had an 'off' year yet, so be warned.... Cork were very good at getting back in numbers and defended well, wich meant that Kerry had to often shoot from range, or from tight angles, or under defensive pressure....but with Louise ni Muircheartaigh and Sarah Houlihan in this kind of form, they reeled off a string of superb points. Kerry led by 0-3 to no score, Cork got in for what I thought was a soft enough goal - it touched off a Kerry defender but I credit it to Ashling Hutchins, who was about to knock it in anyway, but I thought we let them in too easy. Cork led by 1-2 to 0-3 but Kerry took over and reeled off 0-7 on the trot. The referee missed an absolutely blatant foul on Maria Quirke during this period, completely cleaned (without malice, it must be said) on the sideline right in front of the stand. No-one obstructing the referee's view, but he gave a Cork free. One of the most inexplicable decisions I have ever seen, to be honest. The crowd booed him and for once, I can sympathise with that (I would never join in, my personal choice). He wasn't biased, he refereed very well for the most part in a tough but clean hard game, but that one was just fairly strange. One thing I likes was that it didn't rattle Kerry, in fact I don't even think it inspired them; they were so focussed that I don't think they were going to be distracted from the main job at hand. It looked like a brilliant team mental attitude to me, again that's just my interpretation. Before half-time Cork got in for another goal, a very good team move finished off by Anne Walsh. I'll freely admit that, despite the quality of the Kerry performance, I was very worried turning around at half-time with the score at 0-10 to 2-2 and Cork having the strong wind. Frankly, I thought they would ignite, start shooting from further out (something I thought they lacked throughout) and wipe out that lead within five minutes. They threatened the Kerry goal a few times but those were swallowed and it was Kerry who got the goal, Kerry's engine Bernie Breen to Kerry's inspiration Louise ni Muircheartaigh to Megan O'Connell for a super goal. Bernie worked all day and was absolutely broke Cork's hearts and she got great help from Emma Sherwood, but I thought Breige Corkery played her heart out for Cork and never gave up hunting hard, even though she had played a camogie match earlier in the day; there's great heart in those Cork jerseys too. Cork missed a lot of chances - again, I have to credit Kerry's defensive display, they just gave Cork nothing. Geraldine Flynn did pick off a great point, but it was Kerry who were rising all the time and once Bernie gave Louise a goal chance, it became 2-11 to 2-3 and there was no way back. I will say I say Cork get one of the greatest compliments I have ever seen - with 30 seconds left to go in a justifiably long injury time and Kerry leading by 2-13 to 2-4, Cork managed to work a goal chance and I saw Kerry fans hold their hands - "oh Jesus!". 30 seconds to go, nine points up, and we are still afraid of what they could do? An earned compliment. Fantastic win for Kerry, I loved the attitude, the confidence in the football, the willingness to go into physical battles and the cuteness to slip away from them and the accurate shooting and the tenacious defending. A serious note of caution - Cork are better than that display, and will go all out to prove it. We will see them again long before the year is out. Don't any eejit start writing epitaphs! As Conor Cruise O'Brien once said about Charlie Haughey, if I saw this Cork team buried at a crossroads with a stake through their heart, I would continue to wear a clove of garlic around my neck just in case.... I guess that's a compliment too.

Himself,
Thanks for great report. They say "nothing beats being there" but that report is a very close second.
You are right of course that Cork are still in the competition and after their miraculous comeback in the final last year one would be naive to think that their race is run. Still it is always an achievement to beat a great team and the girls are entitled to luxuriate in this latest win for a while.
I wonder will Louise Galvin ,on rugby sevens duty at present, be available for future games? It was also gratifying to see the young Laura Rodgers from Austin Stacks listed among the substitutes after her recent cruciate injury. She was a great prospect prior to that setback.

Very much appreciated, Veteran. Yes, it was fantastic to see Laura back, she came on late in the game to a lot of applause. I know that Louise has said that she would love to make herself available again for Kerry but that her first priority this year is the rugby sevens. The very best of luck to her in that, but of course it would be great if the timimg worked out

She's an amazing player though and hopefully the schedule does permit her to play a bit for kerry this year as the ladies need every help they can get if they want to win the All Ireland. They have certainly shown they can do it and have been improving year on year. The Castleisland ladies of course setting the tone, but there are so many talented ladies on that team. They have gotten a bit closer again to the All Ireland final and if they play like yesterday they might well make it 12 titles for the ladies.

That was an extraordinary second half performance by Kerry against the wind. The key as I saw it was their contrasting approach to the Mayo kick out. In the first half they allowed Mayo kick short with the result that Mayo's ball carriers, they had a few excellent ones, made repeated incisions into the danger zone and if their shooting had not been so askew Kerry could have been in trouble. In the second half, they clamped down on the Mayo kicks out forcing them to mostly go long which were very often gobbled up by a ravenous Kerry team. Textbook football followed with Mayo being submerged. Aisling Desmond was invincible all through at full back. Young Laura Rodgers came on in the second half, having been out for a long time with a cruciate injury. If Laura can avoid further injury she is going to be a player of the first rank and is a very significant addition to the panel this year.
Unfortunately, Cork is the next roadblock on the way.

Couldn't make the game, had to be content with television. Mayo definitely looked the better team in the first half, we struggled when they ran at us, but my God was their shooting poor. Cora Staunton is undeniably the best Ladies footballer of her generation and would make any team of all-time greats, but she won't have good memories of this one. I'll assume that there must have been a tricky wind, because she missed a few frees that bookies wouldn't even accept bets on not going over. I thought Niamh Kelly and Aileen Gilroy (who roved a lot and worked hard throughout, but again just couldn't pick off scores)were the pick of Mayo. Kerry were coughing up a lot of turnovers and getting swallowed up by a hardworking Mayo defence. Sarah Houlihan and Patrice Dennehy oozed menace but weren't provided with enough options. Second half, completely different story. Kerry really accelerated into it. Veteran is spot on about the Mayo kickouts, Kerry's pressure induced a small bit of panic at times. At the other end Edel Murphy was coolness personified in handling and kickouts, she also made a spectacular save in each half. Brilliant shot by Megan O'Connell crashed off the crossbar, Louise reacted really well to fist it in - I thought it showed a sharp brain and great athleticism. Louise added a free before another great shot by Megan hit the net and that was pretty much that. Mayo finished with enough scores to make it look respectable - a great goal - but Kerry were completely on top for the entire second half and played some great football at both ends. Great cohesion in defence, where Aislinn Desmond stood out. Laura Rogers definitely caught the eye once she was introduced, fantastic pace and skill. I don't know who got the bean laoch an cluiche, but my choice would have been Bernie Breen, I thought she was fantastic.

It looked like we were set up in the first half stop Mayo running at us and that didn't really work. It was as if the whole plan was to stop Mayo from scoring but in doing so it meant that every time a Kerry player found herself in open territory there were no options at all for a lay off. In the second half Kerry threw off those shackles and the game opened up. Like in the Munster final Kerry devoured their opposition and though they eased up a bit towards the end the result was clear with 15 minutes still to play. Amazing defensive display. Bernie Breen and Sarah Houlihan are definitely amongst the best footballers in the country. Does anyone know if Louise Galvin is set for a return once the 7s qualifications are over? Louise is flying with the rugby 7s squad and she is key to Ireland's success, but I can't help but wondering if Kerry won't regret not having her one the going gets really tough in the semi final and final.
