Big game for the Crokes, home advantage should make some difference in the heel of the hunt.

sounds like a cracker
UCC 1-19 Monaleen 2-15 (After Extra-Time) By Fintan O’Toole Monday, November 07, 2011 IT took over 80 minutes of absorbing action before the contest was settled in Cloughduv yesterday with UCC’s greater energy and ball retention skills proving decisive in this Munster Club SFC quarter-final. Football games in November generally follow a pattern of dour and low-scoring affairs but this tie was a welcome exception. It was a match characterised by some splendid score-taking and a dramatic finish in normal time. Monaleen looked to have claimed victory, when after a frenzied scramble near the UCC goalmouth in the 62nd minute, the ball fell to corner-back Darren Burke who stabbed a shot to the net.
That score nudged Monaleen into a 2-12 to 1-14 lead yet crucially UCC never panicked. They worked the ball upfield before Peter Crowley was felled as he dashed through the Monaleen defence. The immense pressure did not perturb Jamie O’Sullivan as he faced the free from over 45 yards and he smacked a terrific shot over the bar.
"I could hardly look when Jamie was lining up to it," revealed a breathless UCC manager Paul O’Keeffe. "It was a brilliant kick. The lads might not have panicked on the pitch but I certainly did on the sideline at the end. I think we’ve just gone through enough tight games this year to know what to do in those situations and that was key."
In extra-time, UCC maintained the impetus derived from that equaliser. Gavan O’Grady and Paul Geaney, their twin attacking threats who struck 1-11 between them, knocked over points to see UCC lead 1-19 to 2-14 at the midway stage. Monaleen substitute Muiris Gavin, who showed that he lost none of the outstanding marksmanship from his days as the hub of the Limerick attack, tapped over a free in the 74th minute that trimmed the gap to one but they could not send the match to a replay. UCC ran down the clock brilliantly by passing the ball around the pitch in the remaining minutes and booked a semi-final place.
"It did worry me going into extra-time that the fresh college legs would have the edge on us," admitted Monaleen coach Micheál McDermott.
"They’re very good at holding onto the ball and we just couldn’t get our hands on it in extra-time. We gave so much and it was just disappointing to come away with defeat. But it was a fantastic game of football and our players left the field with honour."
The match concluded with the Monaleen players being applauded on route to their dressing-room by their own supporters and their UCC opponents, which was a reflection of their fine efforts on the day.
Full-back Barry Fitzpatrick and midfielder Paul Kinnerk were outstanding, and with Luke Kavanagh goaling in the 15th minute, they were 1-3 to 0-1 ahead.
However UCC overcame that sluggish start to fight back into contention. They kicked the last four points of the first-half to move back into contention and were boosted early in the second-half when O’Grady netted after O’Sullivan hammered a drive off the crossbar. Martin Hickey and Crowley were in powerful form at the back but they had plenty problems stifling the threats of Jason O’Brien, Gavin and Mike Crowley. Yet the kicking of O’Grady, Geaney and Stephen O’Brien at the other end was instrumental in UCC’s success. After lining out without three of their county final winning team, O’Keeffe was glad with how UCC responded.
"You could see the difference in the way we played today without the two Dr Crokes boys. Johnny’s presence in the middle of the park has been massive for us and then we missed a few frees early on in the game that Daithí would definitely have stuck over. Mike Griffin had a league promotion game with Na Gaeil so we missed what he brings to the team as well. But I think today will focus our minds going forward and we’re relieved to get out of it."
Scorers for UCC: P Geaney 0-7 (0-4f), G O’Grady 1-4 (0-2f), J O’Sullivan 0-3 (0-2 ‘45), S O’Brien 0-2, M Hickey, D O’Sullivan, JB Spillane 0-1 each. Scorers for Monaleen: M Gavin 0-5 (0-2f), L Kavanagh 1-1, M Crowley 0-3 (0-1f), D Burke 1-0, G Collins (0-1f), J O’Brien 0-2 each, S Hickey, P Russell 0-1 each.

UCC game was an outstanding game of football. Monaleen gave everything and just came up short. Paul Geaney kicked 7 points and still wasnt his best, especially in the first. Peter Crowley showed great leadership in defence as did Niall Daly of Roscommon. Crowley will surely get a better run next year with Kerry. In my opinion he is a better back than any of the other subs. Can play corner, full or wing back.

I have to say lads i have the utmost respect for all gaa players, givin up their free time for the pride of the parish...but one man i have the utmost respect for way more than others wud be paul geaney..an absolute gentleman...and an abolutley superb athlete..playing the division 1 final with his club dingle (an daingean) yesterday..even more remarkable when u relaise that the game went into extra time...and then lining out for UCK today against moyle rovers and scoring 2-5...this guy is a hero!! ...he should be given league action in the upcoming league campaign and see how he gets on...
tere are also rumours of him being potentially poached by the kerry hurling team as the man is also a gifted hurler...
If I was him id pick the hurling..no point in hanging around the fringes of the football team when he could make a name for himself in the christy ring cup with the hurlers..

UCC set up Munster final with Dr Crokes Sunday, November 20, 2011 - 03:54 PM KILMURRY-IBRICKANE (Clare) 0-9 DR. CROKES (Kerry) 0-12 MOYLE ROVERS (Tipperary) 1-5 UCC (Cork) 5-12 UCC and Dr Crokes will meet in the final of the AIB Munster Club Senior Football Championship on December 4, following their respective semi-final wins over Moyle Rovers and Kilmurry-Ibrickane this afternoon. At Clonmel, a second half goal rush ensured UCC booked their place in the decider courtesy of a 5-12 to 1-5 defeat of Moyle Rovers. Kerry duo Paul Geaney (2-5) and Gavin O'Grady were to the fore for the students in the opening half, scoring all of the Leeside outfit's first-half points between them as UCC led by 1-7 to 1-2 at the break. Stephen O'Brien netted UCC's first half goal and they continued to go in search of green flags on the restart. UCC impressively netted a hat-trick in a four-minute spell early in the second half with Geaney grabbing two goals, while an O'Brien three-pointer opened up a 4-7 to 1-3 lead. They failed to ease up with a fifth goal coming late on to confirm a 19-point win. At Killarney, three unanswered points in the closing 10 minutes earned Dr Crokes a 0-12 to 0-9 victory over former Munster champions Kilmurry-Ibrickane of Clare. Colm 'Gooch' Cooper delivered those crucial last three scores to book a final berth for Crokes. Kilmurry-Ibrickane led by 0-6 to 0-5 at half-time, having held a 0-3 to 0-0 advantage after just two minutes. It took nine minutes for Crokes to open their tally, with Kieran O'Leary very much on song. They edged into a 0-4 to 0-3 lead by the end of the opening quarter. Kilmurry-Ibrickane led by 0-9 to 0-6 seven minutes into the second half, but Crokes closed out this game with six unanswered points. Both sides finished the game with 14 players. Crokes' Daithi Casey was sent-off for his second bookable offence, while Enda Coughlan of Kilmurry received a straight red card five minutes from the end. Well done to UCC today. They always seemed to be in control of the game. the college defence played brilliantly as a unit, always very comfortable on the ball. Peter Crowley is sheer class. he will have to get a run in the league! Geaney did well, scored one cracker of a goal. moyle rovers were poor all the same.

You couldnt have said it better about Peter Crowley. He should definetly be there or there abouts next year with Kerry. Geaney absolutely destroyed his man. How they left him on him was amazing. Jamie O'Sullivan impressed me at midfield as did David Culhane when he came on.

The main item worth noting about this match was the €15 :admission price. The less said the better about match. Looked like a junior team against a senior team for much of it. Great cohesion by college.

I suppose that Peter Crowley will get the job of marking Gooch. You can be sure that Dr Con Murphy will be onto Anthony Lynch , Shields etc in order to get a few tips.

Great cohesion by college. E15 as well in Killarney. Presume that's set by the Munster Council who , to be fair, have little enough control over the quality of the match itself.

Cork SFC Result: DUHALLOW 2-10 UCC 1-09 UCC eliminated. Now thats how to run a county championship. Teams in Kerry who lose the first round could be waiting to play a losers round in August depending on how Kerry get on during the summer.
