BROTHER'S IN ARMS AS MIKEY BOYLE LEADS KERRY ONTO CROKE PARK By Murt Murphy for Kerry GAA .ie If hurling was horseracing then the Boyle brothers from Ballyduff would be thoroughbreds because they are bred in the purple as Mikey Boyle prepares to lead out a Kerry squad onto Croke Park on Saturday for the Christy Ring Cup final which includes three more brothers, Liam, Aidan and Padraig. A proud day for the Boyle family and nobody will be prouder than dad Liam and mom Helen who produced six hurling sons and daughter Louise, who rarely gets a mention but is always there to support her brothers and they rarely miss an opportunity to mention their beautiful sister, who had to survive in a sport man household as the lads grew up. You see dad Liam has won ten County Senior Hurling Championship medals with Ballyduff and his mom Helen is sister of the great Pat Moriarty of Causeway and Kerry fame that has four more county championship medals and also an All-Ireland Junior winner's medal with Kerry and played with Munster in the Railway Cup. Kenneth and Colm are not involved in Sunday, with the former now retired and Colm concentrating on hurling with the very famous and successful Ballyduff club. But then there is Liam who is carrying an injury and is a doubtful starter along with Aidan who has been a revelation at full forward, but missed the semi final win over Down with a leg injury. Then comes the second youngest Mikey who captains the side and can play anywhere in the forward line or midfield and is considered the best fielder of a sliothair from a standing position in the Christy Ring Cup. When Kerry's backs were to the wall and they were reduced to thirteen men, leadership was called for as Down threatened to spoil the Kerry party in the semi final in Newry. . Kerry had lost Tom Murnane who was always the defender who could be relied on to put his hand in among swinging hurlers, grab the ball and save the day. So when Shane Nolan pointed Kerry in front deep in stoppage time in Newry, Down had one last chance of forcing extra time if they could grab the puck out! The ball was sent down into the Kerry half back line as the scattering of loyal Kingdom followers, who had made the five hour journey to Newry held their collective breaths. Then from a forest of bodies and swinging camán's a hand emerged with the sliothar firmly stuck to the palm of his hand- yes it was the skipper Mikey Boyle who had once more soared above friend and foe to catch a ball that he had no right to catch - but that's Mikey for you - he felt he had to take on the responsibility of getting Kerry over the winning line and that catch sealed the deal. However when the history books are written, it's the youngest of the brothers Padraig, who may well outshine his brothers because young "Podge" is a precocious young 17 year old who has played Kerry minor football and hurling and last year won an All-Ireland B U-21 hurling medal with Kerry and he received rave reviews from no less a respected coach that former Cork boss John Allen. While Padraig may yet end up as the Henry Shefflin of Kerry hurling, at the moment he will have to settle for a place on the bench but if Kerry need a goal late on, expect to see Padraig called into action. However Mikey as the captain is well aware of the task in hand and is quick to point out that while it is great to be playing with three brothers, it will count for nothing unless Kerry win "I don't like talking about the lads (brothers) because this is a team built on everyone playing their part and working hard for the cause. The Boyle brothers will not bring the Christy Ring Cup back to Kerry on their own and while it's a proud day for the family, it's all about the squad and the work ethic and everyone playing their part" What about the close shave in the semi final "We had our backs to the wall when we lost the two lads but we showed great battling qualities to hang on and get through. So yes we are approaching Saturday's game with a lot of confidence because we were in the final last year and we know what to expect. So far we have achieved our goals for the season by retaining our Division 2 status and reaching another Christy Ring Cup final. " Mikey is happy enough that Kerry have improved by playing better teams in Division 2 " We started off shaky enough at the start of the year to be honest with you but we are coming into form now which is a good time and maybe we will peak on Saturday. Last year the League was easier down in Division 3 because you got a couple of extra seconds on the ball while this year in the higher division against stronger teams, you don't get that much time. I think its fair to say that we found our first year in division 2 tough and that is why we were not performing that well but now that's behind us so we might just be able to play with more freedom" The Captain believes that what has really stood to Kerry this year has been the strength and depth of the panel "We had a lot of injuries and suspensions but we are still in the Christy Ring Cup Final and that is because our squad is stronger this year. We have a lot of young players that John Meyler has introduced and used. It gives us more "legs" late on in games too and even that we had to play without John Griffin, Colin Harris, Liam and Aidan ( Boyle), Mike Conway, Andrew Keane and now Tom Murnane because of suspension, I think we are able to cope better because we have ready replacements to come in" Boyle is critical of his own form this year but fails to mention that he has been carrying an injury ( bruised ribs and damaged shoulder) " I have been struggling in the League but I am running into a bit of form in the Christy Ring Cup so hopefully it will last now for one more game at least. I am making no excuses on injuries though" Mikey Boyle is well aware of the threat that Wicklow will pose "I would not be taking any of the 1/3 on offer by the bookmakers about Kerry- I know they are a Division 3 side but so were we last year and we came within a whisker of beating a Div 2 team in Westmeath so I would not underestimate them for one second. We beat them in the semi final last year after being down to 14 men for nearly all the game. I think that they will be strong but we have to be confident in our won ability - if we are not then there is no point in travelling. We are looking forward to a second visit to Croke Park and I think we will want to do it for Tom Murnane who sadly misses out because of suspension and he has been one our best players all year so he has got us to the final, now its time we did our bit and win the medal that Tom so richly deserves" So with that show of unity from a Ballyduff man to a Kilmoyley foe at club level - it might just be Kerry's year to deliver! www.kerrygaa.ie/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=1929www.kerrygaa.ie/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=2129

CHRISTY RING CUP FINAL - PREVIEW
From Croke Park to Semple Stadium - that's John Meyler's plan for Kerry hurling By Murt Murphy for kerrygaa.ie Kerry hurling boss John Meyler does not do a "give them what they want interview" full of fifty/fifties," sure they are an up and coming team" and "we will give it our best shot" - no John Meyler does not suffer from the modern day managers paranoia with the media - he simply shoots from the hip and calls it as it is. It always refreshing if not a challenge to talk to the former Wexford boss, because you never know what he is going to say next and he will never skirt around a contentious issue- sometimes he starts his answer half through a question! John Meyler has done a lot for Kerry hurling - remember that famous day back in 1993 when Kerry shocked the hurling world by beating Waterford in the Munster Senior Hurling Championship - Meyler was at the helm then and by no accident of fate if Kerry could win the Christy Ring Cup, that's where Meyler wants to head with Kerry again - back into the Munster Championship but more about that anon!
Meyler is happy to be in the Christy Ring Cup final and reflects on the campaign to date “We have played three matches to date and two of them were away from home. Kildare was the first match and we struggled. It was just six days after we finishing our league campaign and we were missing a number of players through injury including John Griffin. We played Meath at home and we were without both John Griffin and the suspended Andrew Keane along with the likes of Mike Conway who had to pull out before the game so we stuttered at times during both those games but always finished well. I think we scored about 1-5 at the end of both those two games so we showed the necessary character.
Then we had to travel to Newry for a semi final meeting with Down and it was a long trip on Fri/Saturday for the game but we had Colin Harris, John Griffin and Andrew Keane back and that strengthened us up considerably so it was great to have those players back into the squad and back into the team”
Meyler refuses to accept that in Newry just like in Killarney and during key games in the National League, that Kerry have a habit of not finishing off teams, of allowing big leads slip and in Newry Kerry led by as much as nine points at one stage of the second half “I said before we travelled to Newry that if we go up there and beat Down, then we would be a in good position to win the Christy Ring Cup and I think that’s the important thing. We went away to a difficult venue, after a long journey and we had a full squad that did the business. We were reduced to thirteen men with six minutes to go and it showed great character from the players left on the field to hold out. It was great to see Mikey Boyle catching the last puck out when we were up a point and you needed somebody to show leadership, Mikey who is the captain did what had to be done and that’s what character is all about.
I think last year I was driving them on more, but this year they are taking more ownership of what is required to be done in clutch situations and it definitely got us through to the final in Newry.”
Meyler makes no secret of the fact that he has loftier ambitions for this Kerry squad and Kerry hurling down the road and believes that this year while the public might not appreciate it- he feels Kerry hurling is in a better place “Look last year we played in Division 3 and won it easily enough but it probably wasn’t much good in terms of improving the standard. This year, we played in a very competitive Division 2, played seven games, won two, lost five. The main objective this year was to remain in Division 2 and we achieved our aim. Last year we won Division 3 and we had a months break before we went back training for the Christy Ring Cup while this year it was a straight turn around and into two matches and then a three week break to the semi final. That probably suited us because the lads were used to the pitch of the hurling in Div 2 so it has benefited us.
But then going in now to the Christy Ring Cup Final now without Tom Murnane is a bit a of negative but we have all the other players back so we are travelling to Croke Park to win”
Meyler admits that the Kilmoyley defender is a huge loss “Tom has been our most influential and most consistent player for last two years because he is a big game player. Last year when we were in trouble against Down we put him in fullback and he did the job. While he is superb centre back or half back, he really has made a huge difference to us at fullback and he will be a huge loss. But look the character of this team is all about coping. Look when I thought after four games in the League that four points had us reasonably safe I decided that against Limerick, Clare and Laois we could try fellows and they were able to gain valuable experience. That’s why when we went into the Christy Ring Cup without John Griffin, Colin Harris and Andrew Keane, we were able to put fellows in who had played three or four matches in the league and that gave them the experience they needed which is important. So we have qualms about throwing people in anymore when we need them because they all have hurled against strong opponents and they can get to the pace of the game quickly. We could not do that in the past”
Meyler makes no secret of the fact that he is going with a young side to Croke Park but he emphasizes that this is year two of a three or maybe a five year plan for Kerry hurling and this team is a mere work in progress with a loftier ambitions down the line “No I am not afraid of going to Croke Park with a young side. Young people today have no fear – no fear of a big challenge and no obstacle faze them. These lads have been used to winning, including two U-21 All-Ireland’s, all at B level but they know what is required from the training we have been doing. They know where the bar is and they will not go below it. The younger lads are the future – Colm Harty is back, Padraig Boyle , still a minor is back in, and there a are a few more young fellows starting to come on board. So its work in progress and I think my three year plan may well be a five year plan. I want to be ready for the Munster Senior Championship down the road that’s the plan – anything else along the way is a bonus. The bottom line is that I want Kerry hurling to be able to compete at Munster Championship level – simple as that – whether its next year or three years down the line”
So can Kerry beat Wicklow on Saturday “Last year we let ourselves down badly because we did not play against Wicklow in the semi final at Nenagh. Andrew Keane got sent off after four minutes and we were all over the shop. Wicklow should have beaten us and we were just haunted to get away with a win in the last few minutes. We had to put Mike Conway back to centre back and James Flaherty came on and scored four points. While I was delighted with the win I was really annoyed with the lads because I felt that we lacked a certain bit of composure at vital times. But this year is different. I respect Wicklow- they won Div 3B and then Div 3A and they are up in Div 2 next year and they are in the final of the Christy Ring Cup. They have a dangerous full forward line and O’Brien caused us all sorts of problems last year, and I am sure Leighton Glynn will be back and when you throw in Jonathon O’Neill, they have serious forwards. Look we know they are a good side but my concern is to get Kerry right on the day and if we play as we are capable of playing, I am confident that we can do it”
The Kerry boss sums up his thinking on what and where Kerry hurling must go from here when asked what winning the Christy Ring Cup would mean to him and Kerry “ It would mean that we would be back in September to start training for next years Munster Senior Hurling Championship and looking forward to travelling to Semple Stadium to play Tipperary next May” Meyler quips- which returns us to the beginning again – The Wexford native has lofty ambitions for Kerry hurling – this Saturday he is hoping to take another step along the way in Croke Park by helping Kerry claim the Christy Ring Cup for the first time!

Kerry boss John Meyler has made two changes to the side that defeated Down for tomorrow's Christy Ring Cup final against Wicklow.
Padraig O'Grady replaces Tom Murnane in defence, while team captain Mikey Conway is drafted into the full forward line instead of James Flaherty as the Kingdom go in search of their first Ring Cup and bid to make amends for their heartbreaking defeat to Westmeath in last year's decider.
Kerry (SH v Wicklow): B Rochford; P O'Grady, J Godley, E Fitzgerald; C Harris, J Casey, A Keane; D Dineen, J Griffin; D O'Connell, G O'Brien, M Boyle; S Nolan, M Conway, J Egan.

Boyle aiming to fulfill ambition Kerry's Mikey Boyle 03 June 2011
Kerry captain Mikey Boyle set himself a target at the start of the year and now he is 70 minutes from fulfilling that dream.
Boyle is determined to walk up the steps of Croke Park to collect the Christy Ring Cup and standing in his way is a determined Wicklow side.
Last year, Kerry made it to the final, but lost to Westmeath by a solitary point and the inspirational Boyle is keen to avoid a similar feeling at the final whistle this year.
"Since the start of the year my aim has been to walk up the steps of Croke Park and lift that Cup so hopefully this will be the year we'll do it," said Boyle.
Boyle was outstanding in the semi final win over Down and he will need to be at his best once again as Wicklow will provide a very stern test indeed.

GRITTY GRIFFIN BELIEVES ITS TIME FOR THE KINGDOM TO COME By Murt Murphy for kerrygaa.ie "A little something is worth more than a lot of nothing "could well be the best way of describing one of Kerry's key performers, when the senior hurling team runs out onto Croke Park on Saturday to face Wicklow in the Christy Ring Cup Final. John Griffin (27) has enjoyed many successes with club and county but nothing with please the Lixnaw clubman more than to help Kerry claim the Christy Ring Cup in Croke Park on Saturday next. Griffin aka Tweek to his team-mates, is a vital cog in the Kerry machine and his return after injury to the fray, for the Kingdom's semi final's joust with Down was crucial in his sides magnificent triumph with just thirteen players. "Tweek" despite his lack of inches is a classy hurler and a nifty stick man, with his move to midfield under John Meyler solving a major problem for the Kingdom because Griffin covers more ground than anyone else on the team, picks up breaking ball and invariably finds a team-mate with an accurate pass.
His value to Kerry can be gleaned from the fact that they play much better with him and his recent absence through injury had the Kingdom struggling for long periods in games, they would have won with ease, had Paul Galvin's team-mate from Finuge being on board. The midfield dynamo was glad to get out of Newry with a one point win in the semi final "I fractured my scapula (shoulder) and I was out for a couple of months. I injured it against Carlow about two and half months ago so the Down game was my first game back. I had played in a couple of challenge games and had taken part in a couple of very tough training sessions so I felt confident that the shoulder would be ok. It was a good win, though it was by a mere point but the two lads (Garry O'Brien and Tom Murnane) being sent off in the last ten minutes left them back into it and we barely got over the line. But I felt earlier in the week that we were the better side. I think we were eight points up at one stage. I think that we had the intensity something we had been missing in the Kildare and Meath games in Newry because any time a Down player had the ball, we had a number of players closing them down, we worked very hard in two's and threes so in fairness it was a great win and just look at the score they posted against Derry on Sunday in Ulster SHC" The Hurling Development Officer is aware of the fact that Kerry despite playing in a tougher Division 2 this year have only performed in patches and have been inclined to allow big leads to slip so are Kerry in a better place approaching their second Christy Ring Cup Final in row than they were last year when they lost to an injury time point to Westmeath "I was on the sidelines for both the Kildare and Meath games and yes I have to be honest and admit that we did not perform in either. We were a bit flat which was maybe understandable because we had only a six day turn around from finishing the National League and starting the Christy Ring. But when the going tough in both those games and things got tight we pulled through which I think is a good sign of a team. I think its also a good sign of a side to be winning when playing badly and that why approaching the Down game the last day, we knew there was a good performance in us and in fairness we played well but hopefully there is one complete performance in us and maybe it will be next day in Croke Park against Wicklow"
Tweek is strong advocate of playing teams that are better than you, if you want to improve your game and life in Division 2 against the Clare's and Limerick's of this world certainly helped Kerry " Of course playing teams that are better than you always helps but it does not guarantee you Christy Ring Cup success. Last year remember we were a Division 3 team playing a Division 2 team (Westmeath) and they only beat us by a point. But I think that playing in Division 2 does give you a slight advantage because you are playing better teams, the hurling is more intense. In division 2 if you make mistakes, you will be punished so you learn from that as well.
Even in training it's geared towards more intensity and a higher work rate - everything seems to happen faster." Griffin admits that there is a hunger within this Kerry squad to win the Christy Ring Cup "Sean Kelly brought in this competition seven years ago and we haven't won it yet that's a bit of a black mark against us. We have been to semi finals and made the final last year. I think we have taken the competition far more serious the past few years and we are getting closer. There is no added pressure but we feel that its about time that we got the Christy Ring monkey off our backs once and for all, for the sake of ourselves and for sake of Kerry hurling, Kerry hurling deserves to win a Christy Ring Cup and to be playing in Division 2 and that is the level we deserve to be at" Griffin goes issues a stark warning to those who harbour ambitions of Kerry competing in the Munster Senior Hurling Championship next year or the year after " We have no business playing in the Munster SHC or anything higher than Division 2 unless we win the Christy Ring Cup - if we don't win the Christy Ring Cup - and I know there are talks of Munster Senior Championship - I think we will have to forget about that until we win the Christy Ring- So we need to win on Saturday and if the younger players want to see progress then we must be winning silverware."
Tweek is wary of Wicklow and believes there are dangerous opponents "I have played them twice, once back in Kilmoyley in the League when Kerry won well and then last year in Nenagh in the Christy Ring Cup semi final when we lost Andrew Keane after three minutes and it was a mighty struggle for the rest of the game with fourteen men. We showed great character to come through in the end and they are well able to hurl. They have a very dangerous full forward line and if Leighton Glynn is back in after his football duties then along with O'Brien and Jonathon O'Neill, they will tough opponents. We are certainly not taking them for granted and we will prepare diligently and hope we get the breaks on the day and achieve our ambition of taking the Cup home to Kerry"

Kingdom can cope with favourite's tag Kerry hurling manager John Meyler 04 June 2011
Kerry can cope with being favourites in today's Christy Ring Cup final, according to John Meyler.
The Kingdom take on Wicklow in the second-tier All-Ireland hurling decider at Croke Park this afternoon, and their manager points out:
"I think we have been favourites in all the matches that we have played, but it's what happens on the day.
"We played Wicklow last year in the semi-final and they were desperately unlucky not to come away with something that day. The benefit will always go to the team in Division Two, just as Westmeath were favourites last year.
"That experience from last year should also stand to us. You need to take advantage of that, but it all comes down to what happens on the day. Wicklow have been very consistent over the last three years. We won't underestimate them.
"We are trying to put a 70-minute performance together rather than the fits and starts that we have been doing for most of the year. We are looking for a start-to-end performance from everybody.
"We need to play some of the hurling that we played against Down and some of the hurling that we played at different stages of the national league. We want to put it all together on the one day."

Kerry won their first Christy Ring Cup title with a resounding victory over Wicklow at Croke Park.
It was a rare Croke Park victory for the hurlers from the Kingdom, but they graced GAA HQ with assurance so often displayed by their footballing colleagues down through the generations.
This was indeed a highly impressive display by the Munster men, who never looked like being overhauled by a Garden County side that was always chasing the game.
Kerry imposed themselves on the game early on, opening out a 1-3 to 0-1 lead in the opening 10 minutes.
Shane Nolan, Darragh O'Connell and Mike Conway all steered over points, and John Egan hit the game's opening goal.
It was Gary O'Brien who slalomed his way through the Wicklow defence, before offloading to the unmarked Egan, who smashed home past Wayne O'Gorman from close range.
But with Eamon Kearns a powerful figure at midfield, Wicklow battled their way into the game, and points from Andy O'Brien and Ronan Keddy narrowed the deficit.
They were awarded a penalty, but Jonathan O'Neill's effort was deflected around the post by John Griffin, with O'Neill converting the resultant 65.
An O'Neilll free narrowed the gap to three, but the Munster men hit the last four points of the half, two of them from O'Connell, to lead by 1-10 to 0-6 at the break.
O'Connell burst through a gap in the Garden defence for a superb goal two minutes after the restart, but the score was cancelled out almost immediately.
Wicklow were awarded a second penalty, taken by substitute James Quirke, whose strike was kept out, but he followed in to hammer the rebound home.
A sustained spell of pressure yielded little in the way of success for the Leinster men, who could find no way past the excellent James Godley and Andrew Keane.
And as the game wore on, and their plight became more desperate, Wicklow went for goal, without success, when points were there for the taking.
In the meantime, Kerry were able to pick off scores though O'Connell, substitute James Flaherty and Egan to move further into the comfort zone.
Nolan brought his tally to five with a couple of sublime long-range strikes, before Wicklow pulled back a consolation goal through skipper O'Neill three minutes from the end.

Great win today for the lads!! Interesting Wicklow had quite a few dual players Leighton Glynn and others, also people might remember the Wicklow keeper Wayne O'Gorman socred 3 goal in the All Irland Junior final in 2002 when Wicklow beat Kerry
