Seen this on Hoganstand and taught it might be interesting. Who was the last prest to play Intercounty or Club that you know of? Also does anyone know has there been any prests that have played with Kerry?

Fr. Iggy Clark won a senior hurling medal with Galway at the start of the eighties.
Fr. Moss O'Connell from Ardfert? played with Kerry in 1959,having sensationally replaced Tim "Tiger" Lyons for the semi-final against Dublin. However, if my memory serves me right, Tiger regained his place for the final against Galway. Presumably, Fr. Moss got his medal in any case.
I remember in 1962, Donie O'Sullivan missed the final because he had returned to Maynooth to complete his priestly studies. In those days, once the trainee priests had returned to college they were not allowed out again, at least for sports purposes, until the following summer holidays. Donie did not complete his priestly studies and went on to win medals in 1969 and 1970, being captain in 1970. I think he was a substitute in 1975 but I am not sure if he won a medal that year. I wonder did he get a medal in 1962?
Nicholas Clavin was an outstanding centre half back in Offaly's successive winning teams of1971 and 1972. I think he was a fully fledged priest at the time. Not sure.
I remember Fr. Seanie Barry winning a senior hurling medal with Cork in 1966. Fr. Mick Waters may have won his medal in the same year or circa 1970. I am sure our Cork friends will clarify that.
Fr. Tommy Maher won a senior medal with Kilkenny sometime in the sixties also.
Tony Barrett was a star Kerry minor circa 1962/63. He was on one or both of those successful teams at some stage of the campaigns. He also went to Maynooth to pursue clerical studies. I am not sure if he secured medals from those campaigns. Like Donie O'Sullivan, Tony did not complete his studies for the priesthood.
It is very likely that priests playing senior inter county games was common in bygone days but the decline in vocations has made this a rare occurrence in modern times. Perhaps, the current economic recession/depression will reverse the trend. There maybe a correlation between religious vocations and declining standards of living. Any sociologists on the forum?

Further to my contribution yesterday, Fr. Paudie & Willie Fitzmaurice played for Limerick some years ago. I am not sure if they were on the panel when Limerick last won the hurling final, 1973. I think two other brothers, Fr. Seamus & Fr. Liam Ryan, may have played for Limerick further back.
It would be an interesting exercise to chronicle the playing contribution of the clergy at inter county level, just it has been done with politicians.

Fr. Larry Kelly (brother of MEP Sean) was a tough centre half back for Kilcummin. Fr. Jimmy Hegarty starred with Glenflesk. Fr. Jim Kennelly from Millstreet was on the Cork panel back in the mid-to-late 70's.
Fr. Jim Linnane reffed a lot of EK juvenile games and ran for County Board Chairman.
Fr. Peter Crowley played for Firies after his return from African mission work.

Fr. Liam Lynch did play with Kenmare after ordination, and was a good tough hurler. I know one opponent who used to swear at him, remember that he was a priest, and apologise. Five minutes later he'd be swearing at him again
