look lads we've just has two hard sessions over the last two sundays on the shrinks couch,we've proberly had a wee bit of blood letting among the panel. The hard questions will now have to be asked and answered in the privacy of the kerry dressing room by the lads and management, lets let them get on with it in peace. were better off going along the back door route now rather than stumbling into a quarter final with cracks all over the place, expect the leaders of the team, lads with with mulitple all-ireland medals in their back pockets to lead from the front now in the dressing room, the training pitch and on match day, lads like dara, seamus, tomas mike gooch etc. There's no hidding now, everything is out in the open amongst the players, expect the hard talking to be done by mid week and the leaders to grap the team by the scruff of the neck and drive on. kerry are now 3 to 1 to win the all-ireland,proberly the best odds you will get for a long time,i'm off to the bookies to throw a few bob on them.

My team would be.... Diarmuid Murphy Aidan O'Mahony,Mike McCarthy,Tom O'Sullivan Tomás Ó Sé,Seamus Moynihan,Marc Ó Sé Darragh Ó Sé,Kieran Donaghy Darren O'Sullivan,Tommy Griffin, Paul Galvin Mike Russell,Eoin Brosnan,Colm Cooper
After MFR's performance yesterday I've definitely changed my mind about him and think he should start again. There's very little difference between centreforward and midfield as Nicholas Murphy proved yesterday, so it wouldn't matter that much if Darragh Ó Sé or Tommy Griffin was centreforward but not Donaghy as he is an out-and-out midfielder while the other 2 are more attack minded. A month ago I wouldn't have dreamt of having Darren O'Sullivan as wing forward in case he was on an attacking wing back but yesterday he really showed he can hassle and harry with the best of them and he could burn a few defenses.
I thought the experiment of Brosnan at full-forward for the All-Ireland last year worked Ok in patches so it's worth trying again. It makes more sense than Sheehan or Declan O'Sullivan there anyway. Instead of a half-forward line being a worry for us this would have a good mix of speed, strength, skill and height.

While Darren certainly was very industrious etc, was I the only one at the game yesterday who felt he kept running down cul de sacs. He has so much pace, yet time and time again, he failed to cut back inside his man and instead ended up down near the corner flag and either turning over the ball or losing over the line.

Good point Jo90, Darren showed great spirit pressurising Cork defense yesterday. He did one great tackle in the second half winning Kerry a line ball. A definite starter against longford..
What greater motivation will Kerry need to beat Longford, than a quarter final meeting with Armagh...

ASU - this is all back to nobody showing again... Even when Griffin made the great run through, how many players did he draw, but still didn't seem to be any free Kerry lads to take advantage of a pass into the clear.

Well lads,
Working down in Cork here today and in the throes of a depression for a long time. At least we have a home draw to give some bit of hope. Been impressed by the contributions on this one. One question I have is whether anyone thinks our half-backs are attacking enough. For me this is the biggest change since the Championship began. Look at Ger Spillane y'day. Bryan Cullen from Dublin etc.
Also has anyone got any ideas as to how things have changed so radically since the League Final victory. Were all the other teams keeping their powder dry or have Kerry gone back so much?

backs did well enough yesterday, only critism was mike mac was a little loose on masters. should have had someone sticking to him like glue.
eoin in mid field did very little, maybe he broke some balls but he raely did any of those runs he's famous for.
forwards were piss poor, in the first half the whole left attacking side (galvins wing) was empty and i didn't see the corner forwards of sheehan in the full making one run. time and time again the half backs in poscession had to turn back infield and on a number of occasions they got caught.
Darren o's didn't bring anything to the forwards, sure he's fast but what good is that if he's not prepared to shoot. 3 times he tore off on a big run and he was hoping to be fouled cos he'd no interest in shooting.
Griffin and MFR made a real difference when introduced, Mossy and Sean O'Sul did fine but prob not enough to deserve a starting slot.
Also, i really admire Murp in goals, great under the high ball and commanding but his kickouts have really gone pear shaped. should Cremin be given a chance?
my team;
murphy O'Mahony,Mike M,Tom O'Sul T Ó Sé,Moynihan,M Ó Sé Dara, Star Galvin,Brosnan,Griffin Gooch,sheehan,MFR

I'd be dropping Brosnan, Declan O Sullivan and Sheehan for the Longford game given a choice, with Moynihan as captain.
D.Murphy T O'Sullivan M McCarthy M O'Se T O'Se S. Moynihan Aiden O Mahoney
Daragh K.Donaghy
Darren O'Sullivan Galvin Sean Sullivan M.F.Russell Tommy Griffin C.Cooper
Or possibly swap Donaghy and Griffin. I considered putting Daragh in fullforward but he really did well at midfield yesterday and is trying to show those around him how its done. Aside from Murphys kickouts I think we have a decent setup from 1-9

Wouldn't Darren O'Sullivan be captain if Declan O'Sullivan was dropped? Darren plays for Glenbeigh, they don't play with/in South Kerry. Bryan Sheehan would be captain i'd say

This is the busiest I've seen the site in ages! Does anybody actually work !! At least we have something to talk about. Longford are going to put it up to us on Saturday week. They are on a high at the minute and will have no fear of us in our current status. Dont forget they beat us in our last meeting in the league in '04. They have an astute manager in Luke Dempsey and a class finisher in Paul Barden. Based totally on what I saw yesterday in Cork , I would pick the following team. D.Murphy A.O'Mahony , Mike Mcarthy , Tom Osullivan T.O'Se , S.Moynihan (capt.) , M. O'Se D.O'Se , K Donaghy Paul Galvin , T.Griffin , S.O'Sullivan MFR , Gooch , Darren O'Sulivan I also wouldnt object to seeing Star go full forward if things were going wrong. (In my opinion he was the best full forward on display in last years county championship.) I think Mike Frank has to start and be given a well deserved chance. I think this team allows us the best options for cleaning up breaks and making driving runs to threaten the goals and also for Tomas and Marc to get diagonal balls into the forwards.

A few Points to Consider
Tyrone lost last years Ulster final. Micky Harte stated that this helped him find out some of the weak areas of his team which they rectified
Kerry appear to be very sluggish at this point. They are playing to about 35% of their ability
This is not an old Kerry team - Take out Seamus and Dara and the age profile drops a bit
As regards mileage on clocks - Our best players the last day were Seamus and Dara
We overreact when we win and when we lose
I expect us to beat Longford- It is about time we started supporting our team in numbers and the guys thet do turn up should do a bit of shouting
We always play better in Croke Park
I think this is the best thing that could happen to this team (losing to Cork)It is the kick up the backside they needed. The ability to win an All Ireland is there in abundence. They just need to up it

Longford will be a very good test for us. Barden and their corner forward (O'Donoghue?) are good and will test us. Paddy Bradley hit 2 6 for Derry and they still got beaten. Longford could have beaten the Dubs and have gave the Dubs more trouble than anyone this year. They will ask us a lot of questions.

Like your thining there Kevin but would switch things a tiny bit.
Diarmuid (one more chance to rectify the kickouts which haven't been right since Munster last year)
Aidan O'M, Mike McCarthy, Tom O'Sullivan Tom O'Se, Seamus Moynihan, Marc O'Se Daragh O'Se (captain) Tommy Griffin Paul Galvin, Eoin Brosnan Darren O'Sullivan Gooch, Kieran Donaghy, Bryan Sheehan
I'm still stuck as to the half forward line, and Brosnan has been weak, but I think he's the best option we have, and showed more heart and determination on Sunday than Declan.

No real argument there ASA on the backs or with Tommy Griffin at midfield and Dara is the best midfielder we have....but I would like to see Donaghy retained at midfield. He took a while to settle but seems now to have a bright inter-county future at midfield. I don't think his development there should be interrupted for short-term gain. We absolutely do need a ball-winner at full-forward but I'm not convinced he is the man for the job. I am convinced he can do a great job at midfield though. Why then would I be convinced that Dara could do the full-forward/ball winning job? Basically because I think hes such a great all-round footballer and so strong physically and mentally that there is no position on the field that he could play where he wouldn't command massive attention and end up dominating the role. A full-back competing with Dara will know hes in a game.We need the ball to 'stick' when it goes into the full forward line and with Dara there, it'll stick more often than not. I also wouldn't have a problem if Dara roamed a bit because by god, he'll cause trouble for the opposition where ever he goes. Feeding quick corner forwards which we have in abundance from a dominating full-forward would be fantastic in my opinion. I'd disagree with Bryan Sheehan at corner forward also. To me, Bryan, while lacking in great pace, is a guy who needs to be constantly involved in the play if hes going to have an impact...so wing forward for Bryan in my opinion. Now I know that goes against the pacy wingers which the modern game seems to demand but I think that we need to rethink that one a little and play more to our strengths which is a mix of high and low, accurate ball. I'd agree with Eoin at centre-forward. To me, Eoin is a cinfidence player..that is to say, if the team is playing well, Eoin will more likely than not play well. If the team is playing poorly, he won't, up to this point at least, dig you out. Hes a great man, with ball in hand running at a defence. While he was far from outstanding on sunday, I thought there were signs of a return to what, to be fair, is his more normal form. Whatever selection is put out, what is absolutely critical in my opinion is that the half forward line are constantly available to take ball driven high or low out of defence. The roaming has got to stop because forward movement is being hugely impeded by it at present. The half-forwards or midfield being able to drive high or low ball into the full-forward line with confidence that even if its not terribly accurate, we have a better than even chance of winning it in there anyway and turning it into a score. Positioning Dara at the edge of the square obviously requires Tommy Griffin and Kieran Donaghy to turn in hugely energetic performances but both can do this. Dara will deliver and we can start to build up the kind of scorelines our possesion merits in my opinion.

I agree thats the big question Kerrygold. But I suppose, another way of looking at it would be if, God forbid, Dara was injured or suspended, we wouldn't then have a choice. Someone else would have to play at midfield. What would be our options...two from Kieran Donaghy, Tommy Griffin, Bryan Sheehan, Eoin Brosnan, Seamus Moynihan probably. All I'm saying really is that we need to look at what is patently not working and maybe we need to change some of what works great right now in order to improve what is not working. Theres no point in Dara breaking his butt at midfield if ball come out of the forward line quicker than it went in. Maybe we won't be as dominant at midfield but maybe we'll score more from less possession...its a balance I guess we need to strike and it would be a bold decision but maybe thats what we need...........

Desperate times call for desperate measures... I think putting Dara in full forward and Griffin / donaghy midfield is a real option. We know he can take a score or two, and at a stroke would provide a real focal point in the full forward line (and you can be sure that he would stand up for the smaller guys like Darren in there!) Certainly as a more natural football player than Donaghy, he would be a better option... Good work Joxer!

Dara OSe has played no more than a handful of games at full forward in his life. He is the best midfielder in the country. Does anybody honestly think we will see him at 14 this year?

I'd nearly cut that out and post it off to Jack if I were you. Your last section on what we need of the half forward line is well worth reading over a few times. The reason I have Bryan in the corner is that I feel he doesn't have the pace for the half forward line, but is needed for his free taking and I genuinely think if Donaghy was breaking ball coming into the edge of the square, I'd like to have Sheehan there to put the scores over. Darren won't score as much as Sheehan if the ball is broken down for him. Darren has a tendency to come out far for a ball and then drive down dead ends. If there is men who can score inside him, he can still do his running around the half forward line, beat his man and have Gooch / Sheehan inside to feed off to, or learn how to turn inside his man and go for his own point, something he failed to do over the last two weekends to a large extent. As to Darragh v Donaghy at full forward. Donaghy has played there, and played there well on occasion for the club in the past few years. Darragh is an out and out midfielder, and we need him out there to distribute long diagonal ball beyond the half forward line. Donaghy can't do that. Must root out the Longford highlights on the 3G thing from Vodafone. RTEs highlights were poor enough on Saturday night.

I agree Donaghy has played quite well at full-forward for the club but to be fair, and not meaning any offence, Donaghy could be the 'Maor Uisce' for Austin Stacks at the moment and still be their star turn!
Hopefully now, the minors will beat Mayo and after the seniors struggle past Longford and then dismiss Bigmacs Armagh with consummate ease (!), we'll have a double cause for going to the All-Ireland semi-final!
I understand what your saying about Darren and Bryan and can't disagree with much of what you say.....but I'd still go with Dara at Full Forward.........

Well guys! What would ye make of this team?
D Murphy
M O'Se M Mac A O'Mahony
T O'Se S Moynihan T O'Sullivan
D O'Se T Griffin
P Galvin B Sheehan S O'Sullivan
C Cooper K Donneghy M F Russell
I would use Sean O'Sullivan on the wing rather than Darren as he would provide more strength than Darren and Sean also has pace to burn!Darren would be better used as an impact sub like in last years all ireland and when he came on in the second half against cork in killarney! What do ye think?
