Kerry no samba stars 08 August 2006
Armagh’s Aaron Kernan believes Kerry shouldn’t be compared to the Brazilian soccer team, as he believes there us more to the team than just their strength when attacking.
Kernan is surprised that most pundits discuss Kerry’s skill on the ball when he believes their work-rate and physicality is a main aspect of the game.
“I was never hit as hard in my life as I was on Saturday,” revealed Kernan.
“Kerry know how to mix it too, and I suppose that’s a credit to them.
The attacking wing back feels it would be a different story if an Ulster team played like Kerry on Saturday. He says he holds no grudges with how they played and it’s what he expects in championship football.
“If an Ulster team went to Croke Park, got a man sent off and were involved in a few off the ball incidents you would never hear the end of it.
“But Kerry seem to be able to do it and no-one seems to pay a blind bit of notice. I suppose that’s lucky for them.
“I’m not giving out about the Kerry team. The way they play doesn’t bother me. Of course you are going to get physical contact in a match. There would be something wrong if you didn’t,” says Kernan.
“What I don’t understand is why they’re always portrayed as the Brazil of Gaelic football.
“We saw Brazil at this year’s world cup. They didn’t tackle or defend and that’s why they lost. But Kerry know that there’s more to the game than getting forward.

He seems to forget that they had a man sent off and had people involved in off the ball incidents. We are compared to Brazil cos when we play well it can often be attractive to watch.

Lads...I dont think there is anything wrong with the sentiment that Aaron Kernan is expressing there.... Is it just me?? All he said was Kerry shouldn't be compared to Brazil. Armaghs Aaron Kernan believes Kerry shouldnt be compared to the Brazilian soccer team, as he believes there is more to the team than just their strength when attacking. He meant that Brazil lack the toughness and physicality for Kerry to be compared with them.. Is this bad He doesnt criticise anything about Kerry. Maybe the worst he is doing is saying Kerry are more physical than people think they are. Kerry's main strength appears to be their physicality which is overlooked. Thats my reading of it. It is NOT sour grapes...He is just making a few comments about Kerry.. Nothing bad and actually praising I think... We saw Brazil at this years world cup. They didnt tackle or defend and that is why they lost. But Kerry know that there is more to the game than getting forward. Thanks Aaron Kernan for your kind comments. Hope there will no or very few retirements from Armagh this year..

Kernan keeping his cool
By Michael McGeary
08 August 2006 Big Joe Kernan did well to maintain his composure after Armagh's heartbreaking All Ireland quarter-final defeat by Kerry in Croke Park.
He was as always generous in defeat: "This is Kerry's day. They won and fair play to them.
"They answered their critics without a shadow of doubt and they were the better side on the day.
"But we were still in the match with five minutes to go when they got their third goal. It was hard luck on Enda McNulty that his hand-pass was intercepted, but I don't blame him.
"Overall he had a good match and he has been a great servant down the years," he said.
If Kernan had any doubts over the legitimacy of some of Kerry's tactics then he did well to keep his counsel to himself.
For a video overview makes interesting viewing offering more than a hint of how Kerry set about stopping Armagh.
It was no coincidence that Kieran McGeeney was illegally taken out off the ball on four separate occasions by four different players.
Meath referee David Coldrick didn't help Armagh's cause just before half time when he booked full back Francie Bellew for no apparent reason.
If Bellew was guilty of committing some offence then the referee was entitled to award a free to Kerry but he didn't.
The ball actually went out of play and the line ball was awarded to the Ulster champions.
There was no shadow of doubt that the decision had a huge bearing on Bellew for the remainder of the match and on Armagh's prospects of making the All Ireland semi-final.
The referee chose to take action on that occasion and yet he and his four umpires stood idly by as Steven McDonnell and Ronan Clarke were kicked and thumped off the ball.
Perhaps Armagh should have seen what was coming for it's not that long ago that Cork manager Billy Morgan described Kerry as "the most cynical team in the country."
Referee Coldrick again courted controversy when sending off Kerry's Paul Galvin, showing first a yellow then a red card when it was patently obvious it warranted a straight red card.
Armagh will look back with lasting regret on a series of missed chances in the opening half when they had the opposing defence on the rack.
They scored one goal and it's no exaggeration to say that on another day they might have had three. The contrast with Kerry though couldn't have been greater. For once they took the game by the scruff of the neck on the restart they were relentless adding a staggering two goals and 10 points.
For once the Ulster champions had nothing left in the tank and even the introduction of a number of replacements did little to quell Kerry's onslaught as they booked their semi final place.

Coming from Aaron Kernan I see that interview as the highest of praise for Kerry (and that's no disrespect to Kernan, quite the opposite actually) - who want's to be all flash & no substance?
Agree with dec & I'd say that's how the players see it as well.

the way i read it was as a compliment. a very sound compliment that suggets kerry have a bit of everything- defence, strenght and an attacking flair.

If there is any criticism contained in that interview with Aaron,I think it is reserved for the analysts who continually 'pigeon-hole' teams and their style of play.In my personal opinion a lot of these analysts aren't up to the job and resort to glib statements, therefore disguising their inadeqacies.

I agree, its a very fair analysis by young Kernan ! In fairness to The Armagh set up, they have'nt indulged in any sour grapes and have taken their beating very gratously !
By the way, did anyboy see an article in The Evening Echo on Wednesday ! Some fella whose very involved in the Cork set up had a right go at 'Cynical Kerry' in an article, complaining that the national media throw a blind eye to our 'antics' ! Sounded to me like he was making excuses for Cork, even before we take them on !
