Armagh's Paul Grimley is stepping down after five years as assistant to manager Joe Kernan. The Armagh Harps man helped guide the Orchard County to the 2002 All-Ireland title and four Ulster SFC titles along with a National League crown.
Grimley's decision came after a management meeting last week when trainer John McCloskey's position was also discussed.
Kernan and McCloskey are expected to announce their plans early next month.
It has been rumoured that Kernan could be stepping down following his successful spell which ended with Armagh losing to Kerry in the All-Ireland quarter-finals.
Kernan, however, did see Armagh collect the Anglo-Celt Trophy for the third successive time.
However, he may feel that he has taken the present squad as far as they can go.

hard to call at the mo.i would like to see big joe stay on with new blood in the backroom (the rafferty's) but i think it will depend on how some of the older lads will do.theres being some talk of marsden moving into the backroom staff but i dont know how much water this holds as it was his family life (wife) that made him retire from the county panel in the first place.things should be alot clearer in oct

Serious rumours of disccontent doing the rounds.I may be naive, but they don't ring true to me.I think Big Joe will stay on,but I wouldn't be surprised if he pulled a rabbit from the hat as regards an assistant!!!

Kernan decision likely this week Kernan may be joined by John Rafferty in his management team Joe Kernan is expected to tell Armagh GAA officials on Wednesday that he is prepared to stay on as county football boss for one more year. Speculation that Kernan might stand down intensified last week when Paul Grimley quit as assistant boss.
John Rafferty, who led Belfast club St Gall's to this year's All-Ireland Club final, is being tipped to join Kernan's management team.
Fitness coach John McCloskey is set to remain part of Kernan's backroom team.
If Kernan does stay on for a sixth year, he will want to form a management structure which would be able to continue on once he does depart next year.
This is where Rafferty comes in and the former Armagh player would be a strong candidate to become Kernan's successor after leading St Gall's to this year's All-Ireland club decider.
St Gall's are already out of this year's Antrim Championship and it's being speculated that the former Armagh player will step down from his managerial role at the Belfast outfit.
Kernan has guided the Orchard County to the 2002 All-Ireland title and four Ulster SFC titles along with a National League crown in his five-year stint.
Armagh were strongly fancied to repeat their 2002 All-Ireland triumph this year after claiming a third successive provincial title but the Orchard men were beaten by Kerry in the quarter-finals last month.
